Finding God in Social Media

This four-part seminar will offer participants an opportunity to reflect on and share their experience of social media, including email, podcasts, websites for social networking and blogging through which users create an online identity, communities to share information, ideas, news, personal messages, podcasts, photos, videos, and other content.

While recalling our experience of social media and its rapid and enormous development in the past few years, we will examine the personal, social, emotional, spiritual/religious dimensions as they developed and have been experienced individually and communally.

Bring you personal experience and questions to this seminar where we can explore together the positive values, marvels, and challenges of social media, along with the difficulties, deceptions, manipulation, and dangers of social media. Throughout our discussion and sharing, we will look to the media, science, personal experience, and sacred scripture and prayer, as we explore the meaning and relevance of its manifestations in our lives and world.

Father Peter Pearson returns the Parish of St. Monica – St. Elizabeth of Hungary – St. Stephen of Hungary to guide you in creating your own icon of the Good Shepherd. No experience necessary – Father Peter will lead you each step of the way. Each evening begins with prayer, and icon painting is a reflective practice. Many comment that the week is like a retreat experience.

Even if you haven’t painted since kindergarten, you can make a beautiful icon over the course of the week!

Participation in Sunday (or Saturday evening) Eucharist is an integral part of Religious Education in our parish. Don’t take a vacation from God this summer!

Wednesday, August 3 Jesus presents a series of short parables on the theme of vigilance. The first is about being ready for the master’s return. How are you preparing for Jesus’ return? What steps can you take this week to live a more faith-filed life? What do you do to “light your lamps” in preparation for the coming of the Lord?

Thursday, August 4 In another of these parables, Jesus praises those whom the master finds vigilant upon his arrival.

How do you seek out opportunities to be of service? What gifts and talents has God given you that you can share with your parish and community?

Friday, August 5 Jesus tells his disciples that the more they are entrusted with, the more that will be demanded of them. What are your responsibilities as a faith-filled Christin? What might be God asking of you at this moment in your life?

Saturday, August 6 Jesus wants us to be vigilant and place our treasure in heaven. How have your reflections this week helped you to make this a priority in your life?

THE CENTER OF A MEANINGFUL LIFE Today’s readings invite us to reflect upon some of life’s deepest questions, and to explore the meaning of faith. We hear of the universal human search for meaning in our lives in the book of Ecclesiastes. In Luke’s Gospel, we hear Jesus’ parable about one who foolishly seeks ultimate security through the accumulation of wealth. In Colossians, faith in the crucified and resurrected Christ is proclaimed as the path to a richly purposeful and meaningful life. The path of Christian faith places our work, our sufferings, and our limitations within the larger picture of God’s purposes for all of us. In Jesus, God is revealed as our companion in human suffering and limitation. God’s love is at the center of a meaningful life. We place our trust in this loving God, who created us to share in this love, and to share this love with others.
