The Feast of St. Mary Magdalene: A Celebration of Women Leaders Sr. Jenn Schaef, OP

In 2016, Pope Francis changed the status of the Mass celebrated in remembrance of St. Mary Magdalene from a Memorial to a Feast. This may not mean much to those who aren’t liturgy nerds, like myself, but other than Sundays and Solemnities, it is the next highest rank of importance, raising her to be equal to that of the Apostles. Mary Magdalene has had a checkered history. Her story has often been conflagrated with other women in Scripture. This shift recognizes her true role in the history of salvation.

Why is Mary Magdalene important? We might not have Christianity without her. She was the first to recognize Jesus as the risen Christ and she followed his instructions to tell the Apostles what had happened. Because of this, she has the title of Apostolorum Apostola, or “Apostle to the Apostles.”

With the exception of a few, we hear little about the women who accompanied Jesus and participated in his ministry. Even in the most well-known stories, like the Feeding of the 5,000, it is noted that there were 5,000 men present, not counting women and children[1]. It is important to note that Mary and Martha and Mary Magdalene are mentioned several times in the Gospel, along with Mary the Mother of Jesus. Their roles as friends, family and colleagues are recorded by Biblical scholars. Some scholars think that the women who accompanied Jesus could have helped to finance his ministry as well.

As we have been re-examining the history of our nation that is told, in light of both who is mentioned and who is ignored, it is important to re-examine Scripture with the same critique. Why don’t we hear about the women on a more frequent basis? It wasn’t part of the cultural norm for women to be included during the time the Gospels were written. Does that mean women weren’t there? No. On this Feast Day, take time to recognize the women who helped you to grow in faith. They may not be mentioned in any history books, but probably included your mother, grandmother, teacher, women religious, sister or aunt.

Look through the history of the Catholic Church and read about some of the forgotten women who changed the world for the better. A few to start with in the United States are Elizabeth Ann Seton,[2] who founded the first American Catholic orphanage; the communities of sisters that founded our health care system, including the Sisters of Providence, Sisters of Mercy, and Sisters of St. Joseph;[3] Anne Marie Becraft[4], who founded a school for Black children in Washington, D.C. at 15 years of age; Dolores Huerta, who helped to lead the National Farm Workers Association next to Cesar Chavez;[5] or the many Catholic women who marched for Civil Rights.[6] Or, look up Alice More, the wife of St. Thomas More, who was left caring for their affairs with little money after he was arrested and their property confiscated.[7] These holy women, with faults and gifts are also part of the legacy of women leaders in the Church. May we, like Mary Magdalene and the countless other women in history whose names are remembered or forgotten, continue to proclaim the Good News of Christ’s resurrection.

While recalling our experience of social media and its rapid and enormous development in the past few years, we will examine the personal, social, emotional, spiritual/religious dimensions as they developed and have been experienced individually and communally.

Using the Gospel for Prayer – Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time – July 24, 2022

It is simple. 1. Read the Gospel for the following Sunday slowly, reflecting on the story it tells. 2. Consider the questions suggested for each day. 3. What conversion of mind, heart, and life is the Lord asking of you?

4. Make a resolution about how what you read can be lived that day. 5. Thank God for speaking to you through this reflection.

Luke 11:1-13

Jesus was praying in a certain place, and when he had finished, one of his disciples said to him, “Lord, teach us to pray just as John taught his disciples.” He said to them, “When you pray, say: Father, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come. Give us each day our daily bread and forgive us our sins for we ourselves forgive everyone in debt to us, and do not subject us to the final test.” And he said to them, “Suppose one of you has a friend to whom he goes at midnight and says, ‘Friend, lend me three loaves of bread, for a friend of mine has arrived at my house from a journey, and I have nothing to offer him,’ and he says in reply from within, ‘Do not bother me; the door has already been locked and my children and I are already in bed. I cannot get up to give you anything.’ I tell you, if he does not get up to give the visitor the loaves because of their friendship, he will get up to give him whatever he needs because of his persistence. “And I tell you, ask and you will receive; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who ask, receives; and the one who seeks, finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened. What father among you would hand his son a snake when he asks for a fish? Or hand him a scorpion when he asks for an egg? If you then, who are wicked, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him?”

Monday, July 18 There are two versions of the Lord’s Prayer in the gospels. Luke’s version, which we hear today, is more likely closer to the words that Jesus taught the disciples. We are more familiar with the better-known text that is found in Matthew.

This “Our Father” might possibly reflect how it was prayed in the celebration of the liturgy. Jesus teaches us that his Father is our Father too. This was a radical concept for the Jewish community. How do you relate to God as your father, as everyone’s father? What does that tell us about our relationship with Jesus and with others?

Tuesday, July 19 Jesus’ disciples asked him to teach them how to pray. What are your memories of learning how to pray as a child?

Who were your teachers? As an adult, do you have anyone who guides or mentors you in your spiritual life? Do you feel a need for this?

Wednesday, July 20 Hallowed be thy name. For the Jewish people the name of God is so sacred that it cannot be spoken or written. “Adonai” (Lord) is used instead. How do you show reverence for the name of God? In what ways might you need to modify your speech to be kinder and more reverent? How do you feel if you misuse God’s name?

Thursday, July 21 The parable Jesus tells speaks about the persistence in prayer. The person who was asked to provide food for a friend returning from a journey was not disposed to help. When have you resisted opportunities to be generous? How can you become more attentive to those in need?

Friday, July 22 Jesus tells us to pray for the Holy Spirit. We recently celebrated the feast of Pentecost. We pray to the Father and to Jesus. Do you pray to the Holy Spirit and for the Holy Spirit to kindle in you the fire of his love? Why do you need the Holy Spirit in your life?

Saturday, July 23 Jesus tells us, “Ask and you will receive, seek and you will find.” What are you seeking at this moment in your life?

What do you need to ask God for? Can you speak freely to God? Are you expecting to receive what you ask for?

Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time The Better Part The Gospel for this Sunday can sometimes give the impression that Jesus favored Mary over Martha. But if they had both sat down to listen, there would have been no dinner to serve to Jesus. He wasn't just saying, "Sit down and listen." He meant that just as Mary was content to listen to him, so Martha could have been content to prepare the meal for him. Instead of thinking of her work as a gift to Jesus, she was more concerned with why Mary was not helping her. Remember the first reading, in which Abraham insisted on serving the visitors, whom he came to recognize as the Lord and two angels. He was rewarded with the assurance that he would soon have a son.So simple acts of hospitality can also be how people can welcome the Lord into their homes. Paul reminds us in the second reading that Christ is in us; the church is the body of Christ. When we welcome someone into our homes as a visitor, or into our lives as a friend, we are also welcoming Christ. When we get to know someone better, we are also getting to know Christ. When we are respectful to people who help us, like the maintenance staff, the mail carrier, the waiter, we are also showing respect for the Lord.And what about that "better part" that Mary had chosen?

Are we sometimes like Martha, with too many things on our minds to be aware of the Lord? Sometimes we can't avoid the distractions that are part of life. But if we keep the Lord on our minds, we may be able to see which are distractions to be put aside and which are opportunities to serve the Lord in a different way. Sometimes kids interrupt when we're fixing dinner--maybe they need to be taught how to take care of things by themselves, or maybe they just need a few moments of attention.

We can certainly ask the Lord to help us handle distractions. And as we spend more time with the Lord in prayer, we begin to experience God's peace, which gives us the ability to choose the better part.
