Today’s Readings First Reading — Isaiah speaks of the Servant whom the Lord upholds; he shall bring forth justice to the nations (Isaiah 42:1-4, 6-7) or Isaiah 40:1-5, 9-11.

Psalm — The Lord will bless his people with peace (Psalm 29) or Psalm 104.

Second Reading — Jesus was anointed by God with the Holy Spirit; he went out healing and doing good (Acts 10:34-38) or Titus 2:11-14; 3:4-7.

Remember the Date of Your Baptism Pope Francis urges all of us to remember the date of our baptism, just as we would any important date—birthdays, anniversaries, etc.

Pope Francis calls it a “happy day.”

If you don’t know the date of your baptism, find out!

When we neglect to recognize the importance of this day, we “risk losing sight of what the Lord has done for us, of the gift we have received.

We end up considering it merely as an event that took place in the past – and not even by our will, but rather by that of our parents – that has no effect on the present.”

Icon Painting Workshop January 10-14, 2022 • Rev. Peter Pearson returns to lead us in another wonderful week of prayerful painting.

• No experience or artistic skill required – our excellent teacher will guide us through each step as we each create our own copy of this Good Shepherd icon.

• 6:30-9pm, January 10-14, 2022, in the Angelo Room of the Parish Center.

Seasons of Hope meets for six consecutive weeks. Anyone who is mourning the loss of a loved one is encouraged to attend and invited to bring a friend or family member. The group is open to men and women, and we have the option of separate discussion groups for men and for women. Those who have attended previous Seasons of Hope series are also welcome to participate.

Five Minute Jesus Using the Gospel for Prayer – 2nd Sunday in Ordinary Time – January 16, 2022 It’s simple. 1. Read the Gospel for the following Sunday slowly, reflecting on the story it tells. 2. Reflect on the questions assigned for each day. 3. Make some resolution about how what you read can be lived that day. 4. Then thank God for speaking to you through this reflection.

The Gospel according to John 2:1-11 There was a wedding at Cana in Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. Jesus and his disciples were also invited to the wedding. When the wine ran short, the mother of Jesus said to him, “They have no wine.”

And Jesus said to her, “Woman, how does your concern affect me? My hour has not yet come.” His mother said to the servers, “Do whatever he tells you.” Now there were six stone water jars there for Jewish ceremonial washings, each holding twenty to thirty gallons. Jesus told them, “Fill the jars with water.” So they filled them to the brim. Then he told them, “Draw some out now and take it to the headwaiter.” So they took it. And when the headwaiter tasted the water that had become wine, without knowing where it came from — although the servers who had drawn the water knew —, the headwaiter called the bridegroom and said to him, “Everyone serves good wine first, and then when people have drunk freely, an inferior one; but you have kept the good wine until now.” Jesus did this as the beginning of his signs at Cana in Galilee and so revealed his glory, and his disciples began to believe in him.

Monday Was there something in this reading that spoke to you? Comforted you? Challenged you? What was it? Why did it have this effect on you?

Tuesday The account of the Wedding Feast at Cana completes a trinity of biblical “epiphanies” – manifestations – of Jesus to the world. These profound revelations of the identity of Jesus are: the visit of the Magi from the East, the baptism of Jesus in the Jordan River by John, and the miracle of water into wine at Cana. How has the identity of Jesus been revealed to you in your life? Who would you say Jesus is?

Wednesday Jesus’ mother is only mentioned twice in John’s gospel, and never by name. She is a key figure in this account, bringing the lack of wine to Jesus’ attention, and then telling the servants to do whatever Jesus asks of them. How might you see Mary continuing to this day in this intercessory role of bringing our problems to Jesus’ attention, and of asking us to do whatever Jesus asks of us? How might we respond?

Thursday The structure of John’s gospel account describes seven “signs” that reveal Jesus’ glory. The first of these miracle accounts is the Wedding Feast at Cana. Jesus is revealed as the Messiah in the midst of the ordinary community event of a family marriage celebration. As a result, his disciples begin to believe in him. Do you see Jesus’ power and glory in the midst of your ordinary family life? What causes you to believe in Jesus, and to follow Jesus as a disciple?

Friday The arc of this miracle account moves from the scarcity of wine (no doubt an embarrassment to the hosts of the wedding party,) to the abundance of over 120 gallons of fine wine (to the amazement of the headwaiter.) Elsewhere in John’s gospel, Jesus says that he has come that we might have life, and have it in abundance. (John 10:10) Where in your life do you experience scarcity? Where would you like Jesus to bring life in abundance?

Saturday Some scholars see references to the Church’s sacramental life in John’s account of the Wedding Feast at Cana, and see the water and wine as prefiguring the water and blood that flowed from Jesus’ pierced side as he hung on the cross, which in turn prefigured the sacraments of Baptism and Eucharist. Given what was previously said about the abundance of the water and wine, how might we recognize and celebrate the abundance of God’s grace given to us in the sacraments of Baptism and Eucharist?

From the Pastor 01.09.2022 Covid preparations . . .Here we go again. After months where it seemed that things were getting better, the Omicron variant has complicated our lives. While most of us are aware that the illness caused by the new coronavirus variant is less severe than the previous versions, the ease with which it is spread, and the danger it poses to people in risk groups require we return to wearing masks, redouble our efforts to wash our hands, and respect social distancing guidelines.

And yet. There is little stomach to return to a lock down. The state, the city and our Archdiocese are trying to chart a middle course between the freedom we felt in the fall and the isolation and closures of 2020. As are we. We will continue to be guided by them as we keep our parish as normal as possible. The same goes for our parish school.

Nevertheless the “weak link” in the supply chain is the health of our priests. We can continue to do many things, both online and person, and we will, but if Msgr. Ivers and I become ill with covid, we will have to isolate ourselves. No priests mean no mass.

If that happens, we will seek to inform you with every means at our disposal. However, if there were ever a time when it would be important to sign up for our parish’s social media, IT IS NOW. Search for us and follow us on Instagram (Stelmo79). “Friend” us on Facebook. Check our parish website frequently (Stelmo79.org).

Msgr. Ivers will shortly begin a sign up for “Flocknotes”, which is an easy way for you to receive text messages from the parish to keep you abreast not only of covid closures and changes, but of other important information. When he does this, please sign up!

Over the past 7 years I have had many parishioners approach me, angry, that they did not know about a new mass schedule, the death of a parishioner, the departure of a beloved priest. In the past the only way we had to disseminate information was the weekly bulletin, which few read. Nowadays we have so many more ways to keep informed. Please use them! They are useful not just during this time of the “Omicron wave” but into the future.

Fr. Sebastian Just a brief thankyou to all who attended Fr. Sebastian’s first mass on New Year’s Day. He was thrilled that so many parishioners came, and many of you said how thrilled you all were to be there. Fr. Sebastian is around this weekend (He will be concelebrating the 10am mass this Sunday, I believe) and we hope to see him again in the future. He has expressed an interest in coming and helping with the parish during the summer I did in St. Joseph’s parish in Münster for so many years. We look forward to welcoming you again, Fr. Sebastian!
