The new year kicks off with a Family Welcome Back Picnic on September 19 Each Sunday session, beginning October 3, will begin with participation in the 10am Mass, followed by grade level formation until 12noon.

You may register online at stelmo79.org, or in person at the Parish Center (406 East 80th St.) The Archdiocese of New York requires a minimum of two consecutive years of either Catholic School or Parish Religious Education prior to the reception of First Communion or Confirmation.

Gather with other Catholics, and with those considering becoming Catholic, to learn more about our Catholic Faith in a communal setting over a cup of coffee or tea. Bring your questions and musings!

Five Minute Jesus Using the Gospel for Prayer – 23rd Sunday in Ordinary Time – September 5, 2021 It’s simple. 1. Read the Gospel for the following Sunday slowly, reflecting on the story it tells. 2. Reflect on the questions assigned for each day. 3. Make some resolution about how what you read can be lived that day. 4. Then thank God for speaking to you through this reflection.

The Gospel according to Mark 7:31-37 Again Jesus left the district of Tyre and went by way of Sidon to the Sea of Galilee, into the district of the Decapolis. And people brought to him a deaf man who had a speech impediment and begged him to lay his hand on him. He took him off by himself away from the crowd. He put his finger into the man’s ears and, spitting, touched his tongue; then he looked up to heaven and groaned, and said to him, “Ephphatha!”— that is, “Be opened!” — And immediately the man’s ears were opened, his speech impediment was removed, and he spoke plainly. He ordered them not to tell anyone. But the more he ordered them not to, the more they proclaimed it. They were exceedingly astonished and they said, “He has done all things well. He makes the deaf hear and the mute speak.”

Monday Was there something in this reading that spoke to you? Comforted you? Challenged you? What was it? Why did it have this effect on you?

Tuesday Jesus is now in a Gentile region, and even though he is Jewish, the people there recognize him as a healer. The Gentiles cross societal boundaries in asking Jesus to heal one of their own. Jesus crosses societal and religious boundaries in agreeing to the healing, and in touching the man in order to heal him. Are you willing to put the letter of the law aside to serve the higher law of love of God and neighbor?

Wednesday When Jesus heals this man, he does so in a very physical way, and away from the crowd. Perhaps this was to communicate to the deaf and mute man what was happening to him, and to protect him from the reactions of the crowd. Can Jesus’ sensitivity and compassion be a model for how we help others in need?

Thursday After witnessing this healing, the Gentile community proclaims to all their astonishment at and admiration of Jesus.

How has Jesus “done all things well” for you? Have you shared that experience with others?

Friday A person who could not hear and who could not speak clearly would have been an outcast in the first century.

While current technology has certainly enabled communication, such a person would still experience misunderstanding and exclusion in today’s world. Jesus’ healing restored the man to an active role in the community. Who are you tempted to exclude from your communities? How might you open your heart to them?

Saturday When a child is baptized, the celebrant touches the ears and mouth of the child, saying, “May the Lord Jesus, who made the deaf to hear and the mute to speak, grant that you may soon receive his word with your ears and profess the faith with your lips, to the glory and praise of God the Father.” Reflect on this blessing, and ask yourself how you might be even more open to hearing God’s Word, and to professing your faith in God.

From the Pastor 08.30.21 Rod Gilbert 1941-2021 Although the pastor’s column isn’t usually the space for obituaries, even when they are parishioners, due to the extraordinary nature of this particular funeral, I felt I should give you a heads up.

By now most of us have heard of the death of Rod Gilbert, the famed NY York Rangers hockey player on August 19th. What many may not have known was that he was a parishioner of our parish, and a faithful mass-goer.

His funeral will take place here on the morning of September 8th at 10 am. He will be waked in the church as well, on the evening before from 5-9pm. I share this information with you all simply because as you can imagine, this will be a big event, one which may well interrupt or affect our parish’s normal schedule. I would ask for understanding if you stop by the church on Wednesday and cannot enter, or if you come to daily mass and see that the funeral is still going on! We will try to keep everyone abreast of any changes to the schedules during those two days, and if there is any more information to share, we will put it in the announcements next weekend.

In the meantime, keep Rod, his wife Judy, and their children in your prayers.

Farewell Fr. Jim Dugan!

This weekend also is the last one here for our “summer associate” Father Jim Dugan. He will be returning to his assignment in Buffalo. Thank you, Fr. Jim for all the help you have been to Msgr. Ivers and me, and for all the service you’ve given to the members of our parish.

We missed you last year, are so glad you were able to come this year, and we look forward to seeing you for years to come!

September 26th – Parish Feast Day By now most of us are used to the rhythm of celebrating all our patron saints, St. Monica, St. Elizabeth of Hungary and St. Stephen of Hungary, at the 12-noon mass on the last Sunday of September. This year we will be welcoming our vicar Bishop Edmund Whalen as celebrant, as he will be blessing the new confessional, the shrine to Our Lady of Guadalupe and the shrine to our three patrons in the front of the church. Following this mass, we still plan to have a reception in the back of the church, run by Anne Sabatini and members of the parish council.

Anne is collecting names of people, who would be willing to make a tray of finger food which reflects their ethnic heritage. We want this reception to celebrate the diversity of our parish.
