The experience of social distancing, masking, isolation, and engaging with doctors or family members and friends have provoked a great deal of discussion and necessitated changes in personal habits and proved challenging and stressful to many. In addition, the understanding, desirability, and availability of the Covid-19 vaccine had brought with it extended discussion, confusion, rancor and conversely protection, security and peace to the public.

Throughout our discussion we will look to the media, science, personal experience and sacred scripture and prayer as we explore the meaning and relevance of the pandemic and its manifestations in our lives and world.

Hello everyone!..

Last week we talked about beach pollution.. It is a problem for all us, and we wanted to briefly share why.

When we go to the beach, bacteria can be everywhere and can cause so many illnesses.

We might not see it when we visit the beautiful beaches this country has to offer, but so many underdeveloped countries face severe problems.

The most common is an upset stomach, but swimmers can also suffer neurological disorders, respiratory issues, pinkeye, earaches, meningitis, and hepatitis.

People with compromised immune systems, small children, and seniors may be at higher risk.

Nature is such a beautiful gift from God! Caring for our common home is important to everyone everywhere. It is our responsibility to play our part in keeping the beaches clean.

K-8 Parish Religious Education:

We are on our summer “pause,” but will resume in the fall.

K-8 Religious Education Registration for Fall:

Registration for K-8 Religious Education (including sacramental preparation) is now open.

• Please register early so that we can plan class sizes, assign catechists, and order supplies!

• Register online at stelmo79.org, and mail or drop off payment at the parish center, OR • Register in person at the parish center (406 E. 80th St.), complete forms and make payment.

• A copy of the child’s baptismal certificate is required for all new registrations • Religious Education will be live and onsite beginning in September 2021 • A minimum of two years of religious education or Catholic school are required prior to celebrating First Penance (December 11, 2020), First Communion (April 30, 2021), or Confirmation (May 1, 2021.)

Adult Faith Formation:

We will begin again in the Fall with a fresh new format on Sundays following the noon Mass! Learn more about, and deepen, your own faith with other Catholics over a cup of coffee or tea. As you begin to shape your fall calendar, please consider adding this.

Adult Sacraments of Initiation (RCIA):

Have you ever thought about becoming Catholic? Or are you a baptized Catholic who has not yet celebrated First Communion or Confirmation? All are welcome, and questions are encouraged! Please contact Maryann Tyrer at mtyrer@stelmo79.org to discuss our adult initiation process (commonly known as the RCIA). We gather occasionally over the summer, and weekly beginning in September. You can begin this process at any time throughout the year.

Sacramental Readiness Course for 2nd and 8th graders:

The Archdiocese of New York requires two consecutive years of religious formation (either in a Catholic School, or a Parish Religious Education program) prior to the celebration of First Communion (normally in 2nd grade) and Confirmation (normally in 8th grade.) If, due to the pandemic, your child is entering the 2nd grade or the 8th grade, and was not in any religious formation or Catholic School last year, we have an opportunity for your child to “catch up” over the summer and celebrate the sacraments with his/her peers next fall. A Sacramental Readiness Course will be offered for rising 2nd graders with no previous Religious Education, and for rising 8th graders who were not in any form of Religious Education last year. The course is only for baptized Catholics, and will be offered via home study and Zoom sessions August 23-September 3. The $50 fee includes a text, emailed resource materials, and instruction via Zoom by Maryann Tyrer. Successful completion will earn credit for the first of two years of sacramental preparation. Five Minute Jesus Using the Gospel for Prayer – 19th Sunday in Ordinary Time – August 8, 2021 It’s simple. 1. Read the Gospel for the following Sunday slowly, reflecting on the story it tells. 2. Reflect on the questions assigned for each day. 3. Make some resolution about how what you read can be lived that day. 4. Then thank God for speaking to you through this reflection.

The Gospel according to John 6:41-51 The Jews murmured about Jesus because he said, “I am the bread that came down from heaven,” and they said, “Is this not Jesus, the son of Joseph? Do we not know his father and mother? Then how can he say, ‘I have come down from heaven’?” Jesus answered and said to them, “Stop murmuring among yourselves. No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draw him, and I will raise him on the last day. It is written in the prophets: They shall all be taught by God. Everyone who listens to my Father and learns from him comes to me. Not that anyone has seen the Father except the one who is from God; he has seen the Father.

Amen, amen, I say to you, whoever believes has eternal life. I am the bread of life. Your ancestors ate the manna in the desert, but they died; this is the bread that comes down from heaven so that one may eat it and not die. I am the living bread that came down from heaven; whoever eats this bread will live forever; and the bread that I will give is my flesh for the life of the world.”

Monday Was there something in this reading that spoke to you? Comforted you? Challenged you? What was it? Why did it have this effect on you?

Tuesday Last week, the crowd was comparing Jesus to Moses. The gospel writer continues with this comparison when recounting that they “murmured about Jesus.” The same word is used to describe how the Hebrews murmured, or complained, about Moses in the desert when they were hungry and thirsty. What causes you to complain about your situation? How might you be able to take your complaints to God, who knows all our needs?

Wednesday The people thought they really knew Jesus since they knew his (earthly) family. So his claims to have come down from heaven seemed ludicrous, even blasphemous. Do you ever assume you really know someone based on what you might know about their family? To really get to know someone, we need to set aside assumptions and judgments. How might you be more open to hearing their truth?

Thursday No one can come to the Father unless drawn by him. God always takes the initiative, and everything we do is our response to that call. How might you quiet yourself sometime this summer to hear God’s call and to allow yourself to be drawn to the Father? Once you are aware of God’s call, how might you respond?

Friday To come to Jesus, which will give us eternal life, we must listen to and learn from his Father. How have you heard the Father’s voice in your life? How might you make more time in your schedule to learn from the Father?

Saturday Jesus is the living bread that promises eternal life. How does this affect your understanding of the Eucharist? Does it make you more eager to go to Mass? To receive Communion. Does the promise of eternal life impact your understanding of death? Does it offer you hope?
