1. The Betrothed, by Alessandro Manzoni.

When Pope Francis was a boy, his grandparents used to read to him from this Italian classic, the definitive edition of which was published in 1842. For many years, the future pope could recite the opening sentences from memory. In fact, when Francis was elected in 2013 and gave his first major interview, published in America magazine, he had the book sitting on his desk.

2. Lord of the World, by Robert Hugh Benson Although it isn’t certain where Pope Francis first encountered this 1907 dystopian novel, penned by a well-known English monsignor, it is one of the books Pope Francis often recommends for understanding his warnings about the “ideological colonization” that can come from globalization—that is, the danger of one culture becoming so dominant that others assimilate to it and lose their “local flavor” (cf. “Fratelli Tutti,” No. 142).

3. “The Garden of Forking Paths,” by Jorge Luis Borges Our last selection, a short story by Pope Francis’ fellow Argentine, comes with a charming backstory: When Pope Francis was a young Jesuit teaching literature at a high school in Buenos Aires, he managed to get the celebrated writer Jorge Luis Borges to spend a few days speaking with his students—an appearance that faculty members at a nearby university compared to “the Berlin Philharmonic coming to play ‘happy birthday’ at a children’s party,” one of Bergoglio’s students, Jorge Milia, recalls in Mr. Ivereigh’s book The Great Reformer. pg. 5

K-8 Religious Education REGISTRATION for Fall:

Registration for K-8 Religious Education (including sacramental preparation) is now open.

• Please register early so that we can plan class sizes, assign catechists, and order supplies!

• Register online at stelmo79.org, and mail or drop off payment at the parish center, OR • Register in person at the parish center (406 E. 80th St.), complete forms and make payment.

• A copy of the child’s baptismal certificate is required for all new registrations • Religious Education will be live and onsite beginning September 19, 2021 • A minimum of two years of religious education or Catholic school are required prior to celebrating First Penance (December 11, 2020), First Communion (April 30, 2021), or Confirmation (May 1, 2021.)

Sacramental Readiness Course for 2nd and 8th graders:

The Archdiocese of New York requires two consecutive years of religious formation prior to the celebration of First Communion or Confirmation.) If, due to the pandemic, your child is entering the 2nd grade or the 8th grade, and was not in any religious formation or Catholic School last year, we have an opportunity for your child to “catch up” over the summer and celebrate the sacraments with his/her peers next fall. A Sacramental Readiness Course will be offered for rising 2nd graders with no previous Religious Education, and for rising 8th graders who were not in any form of Religious Education last year. The course is only for baptized Catholics, and will be offered via home study and Zoom sessions August 23-September 3. The $50 fee includes a text, emailed resource materials, and instruction via Zoom by Maryann Tyrer. Successful completion will earn credit for the first of two years of sacramental preparation. Adult Faith Formation:

We will begin again in the Fall with a fresh new format on Sundays following the noon Mass! Learn more about, and deepen, your own faith with other Catholics over a cup of coffee or tea. As you begin to shape your fall calendar, please consider adding this. Open to all who wish to better understand their faith!

Adult Sacraments of Initiation (RCIA):

Have you ever thought about becoming Catholic? Or are you a baptized Catholic who has not yet celebrated First Communion or Confirmation? All are welcome, and questions are encouraged! Please contact Maryann Tyrer at mtyrer@stelmo79.org to discuss our adult initiation process (commonly known as the RCIA). We connect occasionally over the summer, and meet onsite weekly on Sundays beginning in September. You can begin this process at any time throughout the year.

Want to learn more about your own faith while helping others to do the same? Catechists (those who share their faith with others) and assistants are needed in our K-8 Religious Education and our Adult Formation programs.

Five Minute Jesus Using the Gospel for Prayer – 21st Sunday in Ordinary Time – August 22, 2021 It’s simple. 1. Read the Gospel for the following Sunday slowly, reflecting on the story it tells. 2. Reflect on the questions assigned for each day. 3. Make some resolution about how what you read can be lived that day. 4. Then thank God for speaking to you through this reflection.

The Gospel according to John 6:60-69 Many of Jesus’ disciples who were listening said, “This saying is hard; who can accept it?” Since Jesus knew that his disciples were murmuring about this, he said to them, “Does this shock you? What if you were to see the Son of Man ascending to where he was before? It is the spirit that gives life, while the flesh is of no avail.

The words I have spoken to you are Spirit and life. But there are some of you who do not believe.” Jesus knew from the beginning the ones who would not believe and the one who would betray him. And he said, “For this reason I have told you that no one can come to me unless it is granted him by my Father.” As a result of this, many of his disciples returned to their former way of life and no longer accompanied him.

Jesus then said to the Twelve, “Do you also want to leave?” Simon Peter answered him, “Master, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. We have come to believe and are convinced that you are the Holy One of God.” Monday Was there something in this reading that spoke to you? Comforted you? Challenged you? What was it? Why did it have this effect on you?

Tuesday This Sunday’s Gospel concludes our reading of the Bread of Life Discourse from John’s gospel. Jesus says, “I am the living bread that came down from heaven; whoever eats this bread will live forever; and the bread that I will give is my flesh for the life of the world.” Spend some time really reflecting on this teaching. It shocked the disciples – does it shock you?

Wednesday Some of Jesus’ disciples reacted to Jesus’ teaching with “This saying is hard; who can accept it?” Do you sometimes struggle with the difficulties of Jesus’ teachings? Ask Jesus to help you with those struggles. Talking to a trusted friend helps.

Thursday Not only is Jesus the Bread of Life, but his words are Spirit and life. Do you spend time with the Word of God? Do you ponder the words of Jesus? How might you make more time to do this more regularly?

Friday Many of Jesus’ disciples left him and returned to their previous way of life. Have you ever done this? Was there a time in your life when you stopped following Jesus? What caused this? What brought you back to discipleship?

Saturday Jesus asks his closest friends, the Twelve, if they also want to leave. Simon Peter responds with a strong statement of faith in Jesus as the Holy One of God who has the words of eternal life. Who is Jesus to you? What makes Jesus the one to follow above all others? How does your belief in Jesus affect how you live your life?

From the Pastor’s Desk 08.15.2021 An ancient devotion – reimagined In 1521, Iñigo Lopez de Loyola was involved in a military battle defending Pamplona, Spain from the French.

He was badly wounded and had to spend months in recovery. During this time, he read. And as he read, he noticed something. When he read the stories of knights and battles and courtly love, he found himself excited.

But when he read about the lives of the saints, he was also excited but unlike the excitement he felt reading other forms of literature, this excitement stayed; he was motivated to serve, not just his king or lord, but the Lord God. This was the start of the process which made Iñigo into Saint Ignatius of Loyola, the founder of the Jesuits. At the heart of this order’s spirituality and way of life has remained this “discernment of spirits” Iñigo learned in his convalescence.

Over the centuries, this examen as it is called, has evolved, and been applied to changing times and situations.

Recently a priest friend sent me the below examen, composed by Father Jim McDermott, SJ, which takes St. Ignatius’s ancient spiritual insight and applies it to the most modern of topics: technology.

As we head into the last weeks of summer, I thought I would share it with you as an encouragement to reflect on the ways we use (or misuse – or overuse!) the powerful tools of modern technology, social media, and communication.

1. I call to mind a particular kind of technology that I like to use, asking God to bless my reflection, that I might see my experience of that technology more clearly.

2. What kinds of feelings does use of this technology generate in me? How do I feel while I use it, and after?

3. St. Ignatius says the consolation of God is like a drop of water soaking gently into a sponge, whereas the temptations of evil spirits are like water hitting a rock: harsh and confusing. Does this technology leave me feeling consoled or confused?

4. What sort of habits or desires does this technology instill in me? Do I find it inviting me into greater generosity, openness, hopefulness, charity, curiosity, or friendship?

5. What vision of the kingdom of God does this technology promote? Who is given a seat at the table? Who is erased or excluded? Who is derided?

6. What is this technology teaching me about myself and others? Are those lessons accurate—do I know myself and others better because of this technology? Do I love myself and others more?

7. How does this technology affect my relationship with God? Does it feed my spiritual life in some way? My imagination? My sense of hope and gratitude, possibility, and delight?

8. Take a moment to gather up the graces of this prayer. Give thanks for the gifts you have received via this technology and ask God to help you with anything you need to change.
