The Story of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary

On November 1, 1950, Pope Pius XII defined the Assumption of Mary to be a dogma of faith: “We pronounce, declare and define it to be a divinely revealed dogma that the immaculate Mother of God, the ever Virgin Mary, having completed the course of her earthly life, was assumed body and soul to heavenly glory.” The pope proclaimed this dogma only after a broad consultation of bishops, theologians and laity. There were few dissenting voices. What the pope solemnly declared was already a common belief in the Catholic Church. The feast was celebrated under various names Commemoration, Dormition, Passing, Assumption from at least the fifth or sixth century. Today it is celebrated as a solemnity. Scripture does not give an account of Mary’s assumption into heaven. Nevertheless, Revelation 12 speaks of a woman who is caught up in the battle between good and evil. Since Mary best embodies the people of both Old and New Testaments, her assumption can be seen as an exemplification of the woman’s victory. Furthermore, in 1 Corinthians 15:20, Paul speaks of Christ’s resurrection as the first fruits of those who have fallen asleep. Since Mary is closely associated with all the mysteries of Jesus’ life, it is not surprising that the Holy Spirit has led the Church to believe in Mary’s share in his glorification.

“Some are last who will be first, and some are first who will be last.” Does this sound fair? What do you think Jesus means by this? Where do you believe you belong?

Jesus passed through towns and villages, teaching as he went and making his way to Jerusalem. Someone asked him, “Lord, will only a few people be saved?” He answered them, “Strive to enter through the narrow gate, for many, I tell you, will attempt to enter but will not be strong enough. After the master of the house has arisen and locked the door, then you will stand outside knocking and saying, ‘Lord, open the door for us.’ He will say to you in reply, ‘I do not know where you are from.’ And you will say, ‘We ate and drank in your company, and you taught in our streets.’ Then he will say to you, ‘I do not know where you are from. Depart from me you evildoers!’ And there will be wailing and grinding of teeth when you see Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob and all the prophets in the kingdom of God and you yourselves cast out. And people will come from the east and the west and from the north and south and will recline at table in the kingdom of God. For behold, some who are last will be first, and some who are first will be last.”

Jesus makes it clear that all are welcome in the kingdom of God. This is a constant theme in Luke as Jesus reaches out to those whom society would reject tax collectors, prostitutes, the ritually unclean. Are you comfortable in reaching out to those who live on the margins of society? How can you be more welcoming to those you meet? What prejudices do you need to remove from your life?

Friday, August 19

This gospel passage is one of many in Luke that Jesus uses to teach about salvation. Here Jesus advises that we live vigilantly, in expectation of judgement so that we may be invited into the master’s house when that time comes How do you live vigilantly in these troubled times?

It is simple 1 Read the Gospel for the following Sunday slowly, reflecting on the story it tells. 2. Consider the questions suggested for each day. 3. What conversion of mind, heart, and life is the Lord asking ofyou? 4. Make a resolution about how whatyou read ca be lived that day 5 Thank God for speaking to you through this reflection Luke 13: 22 30

Thursday, August 18

The difference between entering through a wide gate and a narrow gate can be the amount of “baggage” we are carrying Some people on a plane will travel with just a carry on to avoid the time it takes to wait for a checked suitcase. What is the “baggage” you carry that, if you left behind, would make it easier to be a disciple?

Five Minute Jesus Using the Gospel for Prayer – 21st Sunday in Ordinary Time August 21, 2022

Was there something in this passage that spoke to you? Comforted you? Challenged you? What was it? Why do you think it influenced you?

Wednesday, August 17

Salvation is depicted as a narrow gate that that requires strength and skill to navigate As in many of Luke’s other images of judgement, the Christian life is not easy, and many who begin becoming overwhelmed by its demands? In your faith journey what demands do you find overwhelming? Do you become discouraged? Where do you find strength to navigate the narrow gate?

From the Pastor 08.14.22 Father Sebastian

came to the US regularly after that, and would stay with me, first at St. Teresa’s on the Lower East Side, and then here. Back in 2009 I asked him if he would ever become a priest. His one word answer: “NIE” (never)! But as they say, if you want to make God laugh, tell him your plans. Sebastian is a high school teacher at St Ursula’s, A Catholic high school in his hometown of Attendorn, Germany. He had no desire to leave, which would have been required if he became a priest of the Archdiocese of Paderborn, his local diocese. However, over the years Fr. Sebastian saw a way to continue doing what he loves, to stay where he lives, and still serve the Church as a priest. Voluntas Dei (Latin for “God’s will’) is a Secular Institute in the Roman Catholic Church, founded in 1947, which enables both lay Catholics and the clergy to come together and live out the Institute’s spirituality in service of the Church and the world. if you want to know more about them, just go to www.voluntasdeiusa.org Or ask Fr. Tony Ciorra, who celebrates mass for us on Sunday: he is a member as well. Sebastian found the spirituality of Voluntas Dei healthy and inspiring. He realized that Voluntas Dei would enable him to become a priest, and continue to work, both as chaplain and teacher, in Attendorn. He became a member, and after some time in formation and more time in seminary, was ordained a priest of this secular instituteNowapriest,

Father Baker

Fr. Sebastian is just beginning to expand what this means for him and for the students at St. Ursula School. America in general and New York City in particular, figure in his plans. We can expect to see him again as he plans to make St. Monica’s a regular stop on his annual summer trip to the US. Fr. Sebastian is also planning a trip, some time in 2023, when he will bring a group of young adults (20+ in age), graduates of his school, to New York for a week to experience the diversity of Catholic life in New York. We will be hearing more about this trip as he is going to ask us to help! Finally, he hopes to take a sabbatical (which he gets as a teacher) and come here for a longer period, sometime in 2024 25. Fr. Sebastian returned to Germany last Sunday. He told me to thank all of you who made his time here so enjoyable, and to say Auf Wiedershen! (German for “see you again”!) Msgr. Ivers’ Operation Another face which we will not see for a while is that of Msgr. Ivers. This past Tuesday he underwent a knee replacement operation at the Hospital for Special Surgery. He is currently recuperating and receiving therapy at the John Cardinal O’Connor Residence for Priests in Riverdale. Cards and letters can be sent to him there at 5655 Arlington Ave. Bronx, NY 10471. Msgr. hopes to be back soon but must be able to navigate the stairwells of our rectory for him to return. We wish him a speedy recovery!

Over the past several weeks we have had a rare gift in our parish: a newly ordained priest: Fr. Sebastian Springob, IVD. Fr. Sebastian was ordained just last year, and in fact some will remember, he celebrated a first mass here at St. Monica’s on New Year’s Day, 2022. Back in 2008 I attended the first mass of a friend at St. Joseph’s Church in Münster, Germany. That mass was where I came to know the parish where I would work as “summer help” for many years. At that mass was a young man who had attended a seminary in Germany a few years before but left before ordination: Sebastian SebastianSpringob.
