Upcoming Sessions: We resume on April 24. No sessions on May 1st (Sacraments Weekend!)

Participation in Sunday (or Saturday evening) Eucharist is an integral part of Religious Education in our parish. Our 10am Mass on Sunday is now a Family-Friendly Mass every Sunday.

Sunday sessions run 11:11am to 11:55am on Zoom. The timing of Religious Ed sessions allows your family to attend the Mass of your choice (in person or via Zoom).

Registration for Fall 2022 will open in May. We plan to return to in-person sessions in the Fall.

Sacramental Preparation: •

Please remember that the Archdiocese requires two years of Religious Education or Catholic School prior to the celebration of First Penance/First Communion (2nd grade or older), and prior to the celebration of Confirmation (8th grade or older). New enrollments this fall will be eligible to receive sacraments in 2024.

2nd Sunday of Easter – Divine Mercy Sunday In the Jubilee Year 2000, Pope John Paul II proclaimed that from that year forward the Second Sunday of Easter would be celebrated as Divine Mercy Sunday. This was proclaimed at the Canonization Mass of St. Faustina Kawalska, who worked throughout her life to make all aware of the merciful love of God. When celebrating Divine Mercy Sunday, the faithful are called to reflect more personally on the graces won through the life, death, and Resurrection of Jesus Christ. In this way their hearts may be more fully aware of the mercy of God for them personally and for the sake of the world.

Mercy cannot become a mere parenthesis in the life of the Church; it constitutes her very existence, through which the profound truths of the Gospel are made manifest and tangible. Everything is revealed in mercy; everything is resolved in the merciful love of the Father.

Five Minute Jesus

Using the Gospel for Prayer – Third Sunday of Easter May 1, 2022

It’s simple. 1. Read the Gospel for the following Sunday slowly, reflecting on the story it tells. 2. Reflect on the questions assigned for each day. 3. Make some resolution about how what you read can be lived that day. 4. Then thank God for speaking to you through this reflection.

The Gospel according to Jn 21:1-14 At that time, Jesus revealed himself to his disciples at the Sea of Tiberias. He revealed himself in this way. Together were Simon Peter, Thomas called Didymus, Nathanael from Cana in Galilee, Zebedee’s sons, and two others of his disciples.

Simon Peter said to them, “I am going fishing.” They said to him, “We also will come with you.” So, they went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing. When it was already dawn, Jesus was standing on the shore; but the disciples did not realize that it was Jesus. Jesus said to them, “Children, have you caught anything to eat?” They answered him, “No.” So he said to them, “Cast the net over the right side of the boat and you will find something.” So, they cast it, and were not able to pull it in because of the number of fish. So, the disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, “It is the Lord.” When Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he tucked in his garment, for he was lightly clad, and jumped into the sea. The other disciples came in the boat, for they were not far from shore, only about a hundred yards, dragging the net with the fish. When they climbed out on shore, they saw a charcoal fire with fish on it and bread. Jesus said to them, “Bring some of the fish you just caught.” So, Simon Peter went over and dragged the net ashore full of one hundred fifty-three large fish. Even though there were so many, the net was not torn. Jesus said to them, “Come, have breakfast.” And none of the disciples dared to ask him, “Who are you?” because they realized it was the Lord. Jesus came over and took the bread and gave it to them, and in like manner the fish. This was now the third time Jesus was revealed to his disciples after being raised from the dead.

Monday Was there something in this reading that spoke to you? Comforted you? Challenged you? What was it? Why did it have this effect on you?

Tuesday What was the disciples’ reaction to the life-changing experience of Jesus’ resurrection? They went back to their old lives. Nothing changing there! But isn’t that what always happening after important experiences or meaningful moments? We graduate. We are married. Our first child is born. We retire. Everything changes. But we remain the same. Have I ever experienced something that has challenged me to truly change? If so, what was it? Can I find God in that challenge to change?

Wednesday Jesus speaks to the disciples, “. . . but the disciples did not realize that it was Jesus.” This speaks to a common experience of disciples of Jesus in the first century as well as the 21st: does Jesus speak to me? And if so, how can I recognize his voice? How do I learn to recognize Jesus’ voice amidst all the other voices clamoring for my attention? Where can I, do I learn who Jesus? What do I need to do more of so that I can recognize him when he speaks to me during my daily life?

Thursday In Jesus’ world, food was life. Jesus offers the disciples more food than they could catch. Thus, Jesus offers them more life than they could imagine. Jesus often calls himself “the life” or ‘the way the truth and the life”. He promises the disciples in John’s Gospel that he has come so that they “might have life and have it to the full”. How is Jesus, “life” for me? What does that mean for me? How has learning who he is, getting to know him through the Scriptures and the sacraments, opening my heart to his teaching and putting it into practice in my life changed my life?

Friday Jesus fed his disciples, and the meal was bread and fish – both early elements in the meals that Christians celebrated, and which becomes what we call the mass. It was at this meal that they realized that the one doing the feeding was really the risen Jesus. How often am I aware of the Lord’s presence at mass? Do I understand that it is really he who is present at the meal? Who is present IN the meal? That it’s he who is doing the offering, preparing, and sharing of the meal? How can I be more aware of Jesus in the eucharist?

Saturday “This was now the third time Jesus was revealed to his disciples after being raised from the dead.” John is keeping count.

Why? Why is it important for him to remind his readers that Jesus appeared not just once but numerous times to his disciples after his resurrection? Is it about his need his need to prove that the disciples saw Jesus, or about our inability to see him? Where do I meet Jesus in my life?

From the Pastor 04.24.22 Holy Week Celebrations like the ones that we had last on the days leading up to Easter would be impossible without so many people, who give of their time, talents, and treasure in service of the parish. I want to thank all the servers, the Eucharistic ministers, the lectors, the ushers and hospitality people, the office staff and people who volunteered to decorate and clean the church, the lay catechists who prepared our candidates for confirmation, and everyone who lent a hand so that our Holy Week could be so wonderful.

Special thanks go out staff: to our pastoral associate for Christian Formation, Maryann Tyrer, who worked behind the scenes as well as front and center in the preparation of our candidates at the Easter Vigil. Thank you to Pedro our Sacristan, to Guillermo Vanegas our Plant Manager, Mike Ward our Parish Manager for all their work in coordinating the moving parts of the celebration.

But a special thanks need to go to our music ministry under the supervision of our Music Director, John Zupan. John’s talents as a director and choir leader are a blessing to our parish family all year long but shine at Easter. Thank you, John Zupan – you are a gift to us all.

If you were not able to attend Holy Week services here, they are available to watch on our parish website www.stelmo79.org. They are archived and will remain there for 90 days. I have already gone back at least once and rewatched some of Easter Sunday, just to enjoy the wonderful music.

If you were there, you might have noticed we were FULL! What a difference from last year, when mask mandates and social distancing limited us to150 per mass. The attendance at masses and services was as follows: Holy Week: Holy Thursday – 182 Good Friday – 269 Easter Vigil – 226 Easter Sunday Masses: 8am – 215 10am – 321 12pm – 460 Those numbers are approaching the numbers we had before the Pandemic. And after years of empty pews, they are good to see.

Sacrament Season Now that Holy Week is past, we focus on the celebrations of First Communion and Confirmation.

They will all take place on next weekend, 4/30 -5/1. We will have two First Communion masses; one at 10:00 am for our school children, and one at 2:00pm for the parish children and Caedmon School. Confirmation will take place on 5/1 at 2pm. Bishop Whalen, Vicar for Manhattan will be our celebrant.
