Brighton Secondary School

Newsletter ISSUE 3 I April 2013

From the Principal I am pleased to announce that as of 8th April Brighton Secondary School will have two building sites that herald in the new 21st Century Learning Centre and the 400 seat Recital Hall. The expected completion dates are 6th February 2014 and 21st October 2013 respectively.

You may like to nominate one or more Brighton teachers in the Excellence Awards. Simply go to www.decd.sa.gov.au/teachingawards and register in a short statement, why you think this teacher is eligible. It doesn’t take long but it would have long-term outcomes for student learning.

There will be NO student DROP-OFF at all anywhere on the school site. The front car park will have trucks, heavy equipment and staff cars; the back driveway only provides staff access. I ask parents to respect the safety of students, staff and builders by obeying the signage. There is no longer any student parking on site.

The staff Professional Development day on Friday 3rd May 2013 will explore the Cross Curriculum priority: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Histories and Cultures. The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander priority provides opportunities for all learners to deepen their knowledge of Australia by engaging with the world’s oldest continuous living cultures. This knowledge and understanding will enrich their ability to participate positively in the ongoing development of Australia.

Asbestos removal occurs on 18th and 19th April during the school holidays. As information comes to hand I will keep you informed in a special section of the newsletter. Harmony Day, Standards Days and Sports Day were highlights of the term. The staff and student teams who organised these events are to be congratulated. Congratulations to the 2013 Prefects and Student Leaders who have taken up the leadership challenge and are making an impact on school tone.

All the staff will be involved in a Professional Learning field day incorporating the Living Kaurna Centre Marion, the natural environment of the Warriparinga Wetlands, the Tjilbruke trail, Coalbrooke House, Kingston Park, South Australian Museum, Migration Museum, Botanic Gardens and the Art Gallery. The Principal Team and I attended the Regional Conference with Professor Martin Westwell from Flinders University who was an excellent knowledgeable and inspiring speaker on teaching “Thinking”. The Region has secured him to present to the teachers and the coordinators on May 13th and June 5th respectively. His impact on teaching and learning will compensate for the teachers’ absence from classes on these days. Olivia O’Neill Principal
