CONGRATULATIONS Mikayla Stewart, Year 12 in 2016, won the SACE Art Show poster prize. The prestigious Poster Award was presented to Mikayla for her leaf-inspired pendant light. Her work will feature on the poster used to promote the SACE Art Show to schools and the broader community in 2018.

Mikayla plans to take a gap year before studying Bachelor of Design (Communication Design) at the University of South Australia.

Charlotte Rayner, Emma Richardson and Lauren Owens had the exciting opportunity to partake in “The Big Rehearsal Masters 2017”. They attended a workshop with the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra working with mentors of the orchestra, culminating with a performance with the ASO at the Grainger Studios.

William Bowering, Year 10, who was selected in the Secondary School Sports SA interstate cricket championships conducted in Brisbane in March.

Emily Jones, Year 10, who has been selected in the Junior Women’s Development Program by Volleyball Australia.

The 2017 Volleyball Australia Youth tour will be held in Thailand in April / May. Brooke Newton, Year 8, who was selected for the state team to play in the Girls FC 7-a-side Soccer Championship in Victoria in March.

BRIGHTON SECONDARY SCHOOL NAMED APPLE DISTINGUISHED SCHOOL Adelaide, SA — 17 March 2017 — Brighton Secondary School is pleased to announce that it has been recognised as an Apple Distinguished School for 2017– 2018 for its outstanding use of technology within the school’s 1:1 Digital Learning Program.

The Apple Distinguished School designation is reserved for programs that meet criteria for innovation, leadership, and educational excellence, and demonstrate a clear vision of exemplary learning environments.

“The selection of Brighton Secondary School as an Apple Distinguished School highlights our success as an innovative and compelling learning environment that engages students and provides tangible evidence of academic accomplishment,” said Olivia O’Neill, School Principal.

“At Brighton we aim to create world-class critical thinkers and learners through an innovative learning and teaching program, and this recognition reinforces our goal to be a leader in digital pedagogies. Through our 1:1 Digital Learning Program, students have become accustomed to their classrooms being places of deep learning and stretch.

“Flipped learning in particular has further enhanced this environment for students, where time in class is spent on higher order thinking and solving real-world problems through challenge based learning. Our Digital Learning program, which sees each student with an iPad or MacBook, allows our students to be curious, courageous, and confident communicators who are equipped to become lifelong learners.”

We are also excited to announce Aimee Shattock has been selected as an Apple Distinguished Educator in the class of 2017 and will be attending the Apple Distinguished Academy in Melbourne later this year.

TERM 1 REPORTS/ DAYMAP THE PARENT PORTAL Dear Parent/ Caregiver, Student Progress Summaries will be sent to parents via the DayMap Parent Portal.

As well as accessing your student’s report the Parent Portal will allow you, as a parent/ caregiver of a Brighton Secondary School student, to see some information via the internet regarding certain aspects of your student’s day at school, such as attendance, homework and summative tasks.

If you already have logged into the Parent Portal you do not need to do anything further, other than ensure that you have kept your log-in and password handy.

If you have not logged into the Parent Portal before, it is vital that you do so over the next few weeks.

Follow the following steps: 1. Ensure you have given Brighton Secondary School your up to date email address – please email (helen.shaw@brighton.sa.edu.au) or phone (8375 8229) Helen Shaw to update this information 2. Once this has been done, allow 24 hours for the information to register in DayMap 3. To access the DayMap Parent Portal, go to the Brighton Secondary School website: www.brightonss.sa.edu.au 4. Click on the DAYMAP LOGIN tab at the top, and click ‘New User?’

5. Enter the email address you have provided the school, and your student’s student ID number (this is at the top of all previous school reports or timetables) 6. Your login information will be sent to that email address – go back to the Brighton Secondary School website, click on Parent Portal and enter your information just emailed. If you have more than 1 student at Brighton Secondary School, all students should be visible.

Student reports will be sent out via the Parent Portal between 3.00pm and 5.00pm on the last Thursday of Term 1 (13/04/2017).

SWIMMING CARNIVAL On Thursday 16th February the Brighton Secondary School Swimming Carnival was held at the State Aquatic and Leisure Centre. Over 270 students participated in the swimming carnival.

The cheering from the grandstand for the championship events, as well as the mass involvement in the swimming heats and novelties brought colour, House spirit and a sense of occasion to this event. Students also enjoyed participating in the leisure activities including waterslides and an inflatable obstacle course in the afternoon.

The leadership of our House captains was integral in the promotion of the carnival and for encouraging and organising students in their Houses successfully into events. The Sport and Recreation VET student timekeepers made an invaluable contribution, with their efforts and concentration throughout the day. I thank the staff who officiated and managed students and events, the House leaders, as well as the Principal Team and teachers for their support of the day in the busy school calendar.

Without the involvement of all these people, the event would not be so successful, or indeed possible.

It is fantastic to have such a positive start to our first carnival event of the year. Points from this event contribute to the Sports Carnival Shield and the overall House Shield.

MUSIC NEWS 2017 International Tour

Elder Conservatorium Chamber Orchestra Visit

We are very excited to have the opportunity to tour Scandinavia with a choir and jazz ensemble in 2017.

In a real Term 1 treat, the Elder Conservatorium Chamber Orchestra performed for our students on Thursday 16th March in the Brighton Concert Hall.

Departing on 24th November and returning on 10th December, this tour will include performances, workshops and sightseeing in Sweden, Finland and Norway. One of the highlights will be singing Finland’s national hymn, Finlandia, with Tapiola Upper Secondary School, Espoo for their 100th Anniversary National Day celebrations.

Directed by Head of Strings at “The Con”, Elizabeth Layton, and including Old Scholars, Harriet Davies, Lilla Davies-Ardill and Mae Napier-Traeger, the orchestra presented a dazzling program of Mozart, Neruda and Grieg.

The first performance for the tour choir will be the ANZAC Day Dawn Service at Brighton Jetty.

SIMC 40th Anniversary Concert In 2016, Brighton Secondary School and Marryatville High School celebrated 40 years of Special Interest Music.

This year marks the 40-year anniversary of the other two Special Interest Music Centres (SIMCs), Woodville High School and Playford International College. To celebrate, there will be a combined concert in Adelaide Town Hall on Thursday 29th June of all four SIMCs. To commemorate this historic occasion, students from all four SIMCs will join forces in a combined choir, orchestra and brass ensemble.

The first rehearsal of the combined choir, directed by Marryatville’s Head of Music, Aldis Sils and accompanied by Jason Hammond (also from Marryatville), took place at Woodville High School on 10th March. Based on the sound produced by this choir after one rehearsal, the concert promises to be an event not to be missed.

Beauty and the Beast On Wednesday 22nd March, the Amoroso String Quartet (Emma Richardson, Lauren Owens, Kiran Sachdev and Charlotte Rayner) performed at the Beauty and the Beast premiere in Glenelg’s new Greater Union Film House.

We entertained over 150 guests who attended the special “Chicks at the Flicks” event, which included food and drink, market stalls and prizes. It was a fantastic atmosphere in which to perform and we were honoured to represent our school in the local community.

COURAGE ACROSS CONTINENTS Past and present students at Brighton Secondary School were very excited to collaborate with students from Lillestrøm Videregående Skole in Norway, in their annual photographic exhibition. This exhibition was held in both Australia and Norway on 2nd March.

The broad and complex theme of courage challenged the students, both in Australia and Norway. It was fantastic to see the varied outcomes, not only in the interpretation of courage, but also in the photographic techniques explored. The experience impacted positively on student confidence, providing them a valuable insight into the photographic industry, while exhibiting their work on a global platform.

Students from both countries were heavily involved in all aspects of the exhibition on top of providing the photographs. They produced statements explaining their work, the design of the booklet and promotional materials to the filming and editing of the exhibition video. I want to thank them personally for their excitement, their willingness to help at every stage and their commitment, especially as this project was completely voluntary.

The exhibition also showcased the talents of two groups of our music students, who will be traveling to Scandinavia at the end of the year.

Sincerest thanks go to them for their incredible performances and professionalism during the event and to Craig Bentley and Andrew Barrett for their support and management of the students.

The exhibition was officially opened by renowned Adelaide Photographer, Denis Smith. Denis spoke honestly and passionately about his journey into the industry, one that took determination, perseverance and above all else, courage. We thank him for his time and truly value our working relationship with him here at Brighton.

A very big thank you also goes to our honoured guests Petter Calmark, the Honorary Norwegian Consul to South Australia, Councillor, Susan Lonie and Member for Morphett, Dr Duncan McFetridge for their support and attendance on the night. Final thanks go to the Principal of Lillestrom Vidergaende School, Oivind Sorlie, and Teacher, Stian Green, for creating a magnificent exhibition every year at the Museum in Akershus. If it weren’t for their vision we would not have been able to experience the mutual joy of sharing our students’ creativity across two continents.

ORIENTATION PROGRAM Brighton Secondary School provides all new international students with a quality orientation program which is undertaken in a supportive learning environment at the beginning of each semester.

Students are provided with information on student visas, health cover, personal safety, finance, home-stay, travel, essential services and Australian culture. The feedback from students and agents has been very positive as students have time to absorb the information that is vital to the success and enjoyment of their stay in Australia.

This term, all new international students travelled to the Port Noarlunga Aquatics Centre in order to participate in a ‘General Aquatics’ experience. It was a highly successful day with students participating in activities like Body Boarding, Surfing, Snorkeling and Canoeing. A second day of familiarization was spent in the Adelaide Hills, visiting Cleland National Park and Hahndorf and then visiting the city to have lunch and explore the Central Market.

HOMESTAY FAMILIES WANTED!!!!

If you are interested in becoming a homestay parent or want a short term taste of the homestay experience, we have a 14 days/13 nights Study Tour visiting us from Japan in Term 3.

Japanese language students in particular will find this opportunity valuable for conversation practice and cultural awareness.

INTERSCHOOL SWIMMING On 7th March, Brighton Secondary School competed in the ‘B’ division of the SSSSA Swimming Championships.

After winning ‘C’ Grade in 2016, it was always going to be tough in this higher division. Unfortunately Brighton was unable to fill many swim spots but still managed to finish a very creditable 5th out of the 13 schools competing.

Congratulations to all swimmers on representing Brighton Secondary School. Special mention must go to Tom Lightfoot for achieving 2 ‘Standards’ on the night.

LEADERSHIP AND RECOGNITION ASSEMBLY Brighton Secondary School Student Leaders – Prefects, House Captains, Peer Leaders, Volleyball, Music and International Captains, along with students who achieved outstanding academic achievement in 2016 were recognised at an assembly on Friday 24th February.

F1 IN SCHOOLS NATIONAL SUCCESS Brighton Secondary School’s ‘Spectrum’, an F1 in Schools team of Year 10 students, recently competed at the F1 in Schools National Competition.

They were named the Development Class Champions for 2017. The team won with a total of 824 out of 900 points and were presented with the following awards: • Best Graphic Design • Best Verbal Presentation • Best Engineered CAD • Best Engineered Design • Best Team Marketing • Best Reaction Time (0.138s) • Knockout Champions • Best Team Portfolio The students worked extremely hard and their perseverance and dedication won out, with the support of their sponsors they managed an outstanding achievement, one of the best scores at the national competition. The team has now started to set their sights on the World final being held at Kuala Lumpur Sepang International Circuit in September, looking to represent Team Australia and Brighton in the largest STEM competition in the world (over 21 million participants).

THINK BRIGHT PROGRAM On 13th March, the Think Bright Years 8 and Year 9 classes gathered in the City to watch “Try Again”. This circus Fringe show was developed by a local group of artists called Vertical Insanity.

The show began with performers stretching and warming up on stage along with their internal monologues highlighting their hidden fears, hopes and dreams. It then focuses on two of the performers rehearsing an aerial silk routine. After one of the performers falls in training they begin to explore ideas of perseverance, human nature and trust through showing their own personal coping mechanisms be it writing in a journal or losing yourself in something you love.

Alex Charman and Samuel Matthewman give a wonderful performance that includes aerial silks, contemporary dance, poi and an on-stage costume change that highlights the vulnerability required to perform in front of a live audience.

“The performance Try Again was shown in the Fringe and was a story of friendship and forgiveness with exciting gymnastics and acrobatics. The show was filled with dynamic acrobatics and an amazing opening piece, everyone was doing something different and interesting. In the center was a two-person act, they were climbing upon white ribbons (aerial silks) and performed many intricate turns and positions.” – Noah Montgomery Nic Tubb Think Bright Program

7.00am, Friday 10th March, and our Concert Hall Foyer was being made ready for our inaugural International Women’s Day breakfast, here at Brighton Secondary School. The stage was set to welcome students, teachers and support staff from Brighton and from our neighbouring Holdfast Partnership schools of Glenelg and Warradale Primary Schools. A calming ambience was beautifully provided by our very own Amoroso String Quartet comprised of Emma Richardson, Lauren Owens, Kiran Sachdev and Charlotte Rayner.

Following a brief welcome to the morning, guests mingled and sampled the light breakfast and enjoyed coffees professionally provided by Jill Brindley’s Year 10 Coffee Culture students. At 8.00am official proceedings began as Harrison McLeod (Year 11) provided a confident acknowledgement of country. This was followed by Elsie Nunu and Nicole Kascak, two Year 11 students from Sophie Russell’s Women’s Studies class, who provided those gathered with expert insight into the reasons for and value of this special day.

The highlight of our morning was our guest speaker, Georgia Bevan. A former Brighton Secondary School student, now a player for the Adelaide Crows in the AFLW League, and a dietician, Georgia spoke eloquently of a range of gender related issues. The impact of Georgia’s presentation is evident in many of the comments made by staff and students alike after the event.

The first Brighton Secondary School International Women’s Day Breakfast was a successful culmination of the collaborative team work this school is renowned for. Money raised was donated to UN Women for their Empower Women, Empower a Nation, Campaign.

Thank you to all the staff and students who worked together in ensuring this became such an affirming and uplifting event.

The whole event was very well organised and I loved seeing a range of, not just girls, involved in the event, including a range of ages.

STANDARDS DAYS We had very successful Year 8 and 9 Standards Days on 7th and 8th March.

The culture of maximum participation and House spirit was evident in the abundance of colour.

I would like to thank the Home Group teachers and Peer Support students for their support on the day. The encouragement and skills of the Physical Education, Special Interest Volleyball and other staff who managed the events was appreciated by the students and integral to the success of the day. Our House Captains and Sport and Recreation VET class displayed outstanding leadership in organising the day. The day could not run as smoothly without their skills of officiating, encouragement and peer coaching.

LIFT DANCE THEATRE Etre was a phenomenal success by any measure.

As an example of what 16 dedicated students can achieve through sheer hard work and talent it was the best production we have produced. As a piece of Art is was up there with any professional company.

As a success in terms of audience, more people than have attended the four Lift productions turned up to watch our outstanding dancers go through their paces.

Over 500 people saw Etre over the five performances and none were disappointed. We have still to find out if we are a realistic chance of taking out the best Fringe Dance award and the Fringe Development award. This would give us three weeks of paid time in the Festival Centre with a sound and lighting technician and access to all the facility has to offer.

In early April we will hold auditions. Several dancers have retired from the company due to pursuing other career paths or returning overseas. We thank them for the opportunity to work with them over an extended period and wish them well for the future. Work on CON TEMPUS will begin shortly with a first viewing in October.

YEAR 10 BEACH VOLLEYBALL CHAMPIONSHIPS On Monday 6th March, Brighton Secondary School entered 36 Year 10 teams in the annual Volleyball SA Pairs competition held at Glenelg.

Teams were entered in U17 and Open Honours grades. Whilst it was a chance to have some fun in the sun with students choosing their teams, we were also pleased with the competitiveness and the results.

SACE STAGE 1 OUTDOOR EDUCATION As a component of our group dynamics unit in Outdoor Education, students attended a session at Mega Adventure.

The aim of this experience was to build team work amongst the group, ready for our adventure based camps and experiences. Some students felt “out of their comfort zone� and demonstrated resilience to continue on and tackle their fears. They were supported well by members of the group to achieve this. It was a very successful activity and we look forward to taking on more adventurous challenges together.

OUTDOOR PURSUITS AQUATICS DAY The Year 10 Outdoor Pursuits classes spent Wednesday of Week 5 at Port Noarlunga, participating in an Aquatics Day. Groups spent half of the day learning how to kayak on the Onkaparinga River, in preparation for the expedition in early Term 2. The other half of the day was spent learning to surf and body board at South Port. It was a great day of getting to know each other better, and experience an aquatic environment before camp.

CREATIVE WRITERS GROUP There are 23 members of Creative Writers this year, so the Creative Tim-Tam Team really has grown.

We have created our own website and Google docs so that we can share our writing, as at the moment we are writing two collaborative novels in two teams. It’s been great so far and we’re looking forward to Meet the Writers as well as entering some of the many competitions that are available for young writers. We meet in Room 36 during Friday lunch and new members are always very welcome.

SLAM POET – LUKA LESSON On 14th March, all Year 10 English students were lucky enough to attend a performance by Luka Lesson in the Brighton Theatre.

Luka Lesson is a slam poet and hip hop artist from Australia who travels around state to state, to educate young individuals on poetry and the spoken art. All the students who attended left feeling inspired and enthused by Luka’s great friendly atmosphere and the way he showed us how poetry is not only beautiful to listen to, but can move and influence people.

In Luka Lesson’s poem Bones, he said “There are 206 bones in our bodies and mine, are just like yours”. This poem is particularly powerful as it was written for Beyond Blue and touched many hearts in the audience. This line told everyone that even if your skin is different, your brains are different, we all have one thing in common. Our bones. We all belong.

YEAR 8 AUTHOR VISIT – BOORI PRYOR Friday 10th March was a really great day for the Year 8 English classes. The well known Aboriginal author, Boori Pryor, visited Brighton Secondary School to talk about his culture and his book “My Girragundji”. We had all read the novel and were looking forward to hearing about his back story.

He introduced us to his world by telling his cultural childhood stories with deliberate and comic exaggeration and a good sense of humour. His hilarity made the theatre’s atmosphere comfortable and relaxing. We learnt that his stories were true ones and written through his books.

We found Mr Pryor very kind and wise. He influenced us to be respectful of all cultures and gave us useful tips for writing stories. We had a blast listening to Mr Pryor and it was a very entertaining session that we will remember.

COMMISSIONER FOR CHILDREN AND YOUNG PEOPLE Ms Helen Connolly has been appointed as South Australia’s first Commissioner for Children and Young People.

Ms Connolly has extensive experience, having worked as Executive Director of Australian Red Cross in South Australia and recently concluding the role of Chair of the South Australian Council of Social Services Inc (SACOSS). She is a long-time advocate for building respectful partnerships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, communities and organisations and has established networks and relationships through her position as a Board Member for Reconciliation SA. Throughout her career, Ms Connolly has taken an active advocacy role on key policy issues that affect the wellbeing of Australian families and children, with a strong focus on early intervention and prevention.

The Commissioner for Children and Young People is a new position to promote and monitor the overall wellbeing of the children of South Australia, including advocating for the rights and interests of all children and young people, and promoting participation by children and young people in the making of decisions that affect their lives.

VISUAL ARTS NEWS Year 8 Art Drawing Folios Students have been completing specialised drawing folios this term to develop observational drawing skills. This unit is inspired by Drawing on The Right Side of the Brain.

Year 9 Birds Year 9 students have created found object bird sculptures inspired by the Tjanpi desert weavers of the NPW lands. Watercolour John Walmsley also was an influencing artist in this project in the backgrounds behind the birds. Special thanks to Mrs Thomson who directed this project in her time at Brighton Secondary School this term.

Year 9 Composite Creatures Year 9 students created composite animal creatures from found object materials. Two bottle tops had to be used in this work and beyond this the imagination takes over!

JAPANESE SCHOOL VISIT After a group of 18 Brighton Secondary School students visited our Japanese sister school, Toyodai Himeji Junior High School, in 2015 and 2016, a group of 20 students from this school came to visit us from 14th to 17th March this year.

It was a fantastic opportunity for our students to interact with the Japanese students, and those who had been on the trip to Toyodai Himeji enjoyed spending time with their friends from Japan.

During this visit, Japanese students spent time with their host brothers/sisters from our school. Brighton Secondary School provided many cultural activities such as an Aboriginal art lesson, an Aussie rules football lesson and a visit to Cleland National Park. However, the highlight of the activities was the MEGA Adventure in West Beach. For some, it was challenging and for others it was a pure adrenaline rush.

This visit from Toyodai Himeji Junior High School provided us with an opportunity to develop intercultural understanding. Furthermore, life-long connections were forged between students, teachers and families.

YEAR 9 DRAMA This term Ms McDonnell’s Year 9 Drama class focussed on melodrama.

Students participated in workshops, and in groups, devised melodrama performances as their major assessment task. The end results were creative, well rehearsed and funny performance pieces.

CAN YOU HELP IN THE CANTEEN?

The school Canteen offers excellent food services to students and staff.

The school Canteen is a source of additional revenue for our school. The profits generated are used for providing additional educational amenities for the students. Over the years, the profits made at the Canteen have been a direct result of the amount of generous voluntary help parents have been prepared to provide.

Parents involved with the Canteen have not only found it a worthwhile social activity by mixing with other volunteer parents, staff and students, but an excellent way to help them understand the structure and processes involved in their child’s school.

We realise that many parents lead busy lives and are therefore offering some different time slots to encourage you to be involved in the school. Any time that you are able to contribute will be greatly appreciated. On the day of volunteering you and your child will receive a free lunch.

As part of DECD Policy all volunteers must have a police clearance and a RAN certificate (Responding to Abuse and Neglect). If you do not have a current police clearance please see Jayne Hall at Student Reception, with your 100 points of identification.
