What's happening in Walthamstow this week...

The exhibition ‘From Poland to Waltham Forest’ has now opened at the Vestry House Museum and will be on until Sunday 14th June.

Waltham Forest Save our NHS will be holding a campaign meeting on M onday 18th M ay at 7:30pm at The Blitz Factory, Unit 16, Ravenswood Industrial Estate. This meeting is open to anyone who wants to be active in their campaign. The Group also took part in producing a short film version of the NHS in Stitches show. There will be an adults only Vintage Night at Henry Maynard School on Addison Road on Tuesday 19th M ay from 7:30pm. Limited tickets are on sale from Maynard road and Addison road reception offices. Enjoy wine, retro snacks and some vintage shopping. If you would like a stall on the night, there are still a few places available and there is no set up free (donation appreciated). Firstly, The Deanery of Waltham Forest are seeking an Older Person Project Coordinator. The successful candidate will have good verbal and written communication skills, evidence of proven track record of working effectively with elderly Christian people and have willingness to pray with others. Chapel End Savoy Players are performing Gilbert and Sullivan’s opera “The Gondoliers” at The Deaton Theatre, Forest School, Oakhurst Gardens from Thursday to Sunday, 28th to 31st M ay 2015 inclusive.

Evening shows start at 7:30pm, and Saturday and Sunday Matinees start at 2:30pm. Be Bop Baby will be taking place on Sunday 31st M ay at the Waltham Forest Trades Hall on Hoe Street. This month they are giving all the proceeds to womankind.org.uk to go to their grassroots Nepalese partner organisations who are working with women who are particularly vulnerable and less able to cope since the earthquake. Where I Wally- E17 Art Trail Architect Project Request and Volunteering Ops for Trail With the E17 Art Trail almost upon us many different arts group are seeking participation by local residents in their work for this festival. One such group is ArchitectsE17 who will be hosting a mapping project called ‘Where I Wally?’ for which they are seeking input from local residents, asking them to nominate a treasured placed in Walthamstow. They are then creating a map and tagging please with the stories collected. For more information on this project and for details of how to participate please visit the website. From 30th M ay – 14th June 2015, with the theme of 'Storytelling', over 4000 local artists and creative contributors will be participating at 170 local venues throughout Waltham Forest as part of the E17 Art Trail.

As part of the forthcoming E17 Art Trail, Local Artist Elly Davies invites you to her gallery of paintings at her home, 59 Lloyd Rd, E17. The gallery will be open from 11am – 6pm on 30th and 31st M ay, 6th,7th 13th and 14th June.

Pulse Studios in Blackhorse Mews near Blackhorse Road station are hosting a weekend of storytelling, comics and music for the E17 Art Trail over the weekend Saturday 5th - 6th June. On Saturday there will be a comic book workshop by Emily Haworth-Booth of the Royal Drawing School and music and storytelling from local acts inc. Paco Sala and Bit Cloudy. There will also be a BBQ! On Sunday there will be a special film screening of "Big Bang Festival" plus a Q&A with Dylan Harvey a local film maker. For more information please visit the website.

This year’s Forest Women’s Interfaith Network Friendship Pilgrimage will be taking place on Sunday 7th June. This is an all-day event walking between temples, mosques, churches, synagogues and other places of worship – all welcome to join or leave the pilgrimage at any stage. The Lloyd Park Jumble trail will be happening on Sunday 7th June from 10am to 3pm. A Jumble Trail is like a car boot sale but out on local streets, as residents co-ordinate to set up stalls outside their houses to sell bric-a-brac,

Local Campaign Groups: St James Neighbourhood Forum & E17 Streets4All Group This week a number of local campaigning groups have asked me to circulate details of their meetings in case other local residents are interested in becoming involved.

Firstly, St James Neighbourhood forum are looking to set up ‘Neighbourhood Plans’, which aims to establish groups to allow local communities to have more influence about what gets built in their area. St James Neighbourhood forum plan to have a meeting to discuss ideas in the coming weeks, and will be using Doodle scheduler to establish the best date and time for the majority. Secondly, E17Streets4all is a group of Walthamstow residents and business owners with the aim of scrutinising the implementation of the Mini-Holland scheme in its current form and proposing amendments to the scheme. For more information about this group and how to participate please email.

Japanese Knotweed in E17: What Can The Council Do? I have recently been informed that there has been a growth in cases of Japanese Knotweed in Waltham Forest. Waltham Forest Council tell me they are planning a communications initiative to tell residents about their options to address this problem.

They state the least costly way of dealing with it without using a contractor, is to use a combination of cutting and spraying the plant. To get rid of the cuttings they suggest burning it on site in one of the bin like burners, otherwise it will need to be removed and disposed of by a specialist contractor. Please be aware it can take a few years to completely eradiate.

The William Morris Multi Cultural Food Festival Event will be taking place on Sunday 7th June from 12:00 -16:00. The event will include a mini carnival, food stalls, face painting, climbing wall, roller skating, African drumming/dancing and lots more. Beginners Five String Banjo Classes for Adults will be starting in June. Classes will be on Mondays at 6:30pm in the Studio Office, Quaker Meeting House,1a Jewel Road. Professional musician, Dick Smith, teaches five-string Banjo classes in three finger bluegrass style picking. £12 per class, starting M onday 8th June.

There will also be Beginners Ukulele Classes for Adults will be commencing on Saturday 13th June.This class will be every Saturday at 12:30pm. Instruments not provided. £10 per class,for the next 7 week course which has limited availability. Classes available for absolute beginners, early stages, easy and intermediates. The William Morris Fun Run will be taking place on Saturday 13th June, turn up from 10:0010:45 at Lloyd Park. You can run it, walk it, roller-skate, crawl it or even hop it, whatever gets you round the course, and you can dress up, even wear a fake William Morris beard and raise money for the local food bank Eat or Heat. Registration is £5 per adult. You will receive an Eat or Heat t-shirt, route map and sponsorship forms.

Stella4Deputy: My Decision To Stand and Campaign Updates

Many residents have been in touch with me following the outcome of the 2015 General election to express their concerns for what a Conservative Government will mean for Walthamstow and what lies ahead for the Labour Party as a movement seeking to champion social justice. I understand and share the concerns of many about the scale of the challenge ahead for Labour - and wrote this article about this recently.

I also wanted to let residents know that I have decided to seek election to be the next Deputy Leader of the Labour Party - if you would like to know more about this you can find an article I have written for the Sunday Mirror about this decision here and my campaign website here if you would like to support my candidacy. My decision to do this has been inspired by what I have learned working with residents across Walthamstow, and I look forward to continuing to work with you all to secure a better future for all local residents as your MP.
