A. THESIS PROJECTS

a. Restoration and Reuse of a Mediterranean Palimpsest.

The Ottoman ravelin of the Fortezza in Rethymno, Greece ur ar re what: urban, architectural, and restoration design in a cultural landscape who: Van der Wee Barbara (Prof. of Arch.-promoter) Coomans de Brachène Thomas (Prof. of Archaeol.-co-promoter) Stefanakis Stylianos (student) why: master thesis where: Rethymno, Crete, Greece when: June 2019 Summary The master thesis concerns the restoration and reuse of the ravelin built by the Ottomans opposite the main entrance of the Venetian citadel, around 1700 and 1715. Between 1909 and 1929, the prostitutes were imprisoned in buildings constructed on its terreplein. In 1929, the government converted it into a Prison, whose operation ceased in 1969. The municipality claimed it to house the Archaeological Museum. According to the 1977 Museum study, its interior was demolished, and a new concrete structure was built inside its external walls. The Museum operated from 1991 to 2015. Since then the building is used as a storage of antiquities. The thesis aims to reuse it as an Art-CafÊ by developing a project respectful at its Palimpsest. For this reason, time and space analysis is carried out. The description of the current state of the building is based on a detailed survey compared with historical documents to identify the surviving past layers and technical analysis. The heritage value assessment is preceded by the project proposal to justify the intervention level on the urban scale and on the building. The current vision and needs of the Municipality, as well as the ravelin’s location, are considered under the aspect of sustainability to devise an economic analysis. The proposed interventions on the master plan and on the ravelin will restore their lost integrity.

Summary The diploma project proposes an urban intervention to revitalize the historic center of Rethymno. It aims to present the monuments of various historical periods in a unified urban system. The analysis focused on the evolution of the urban fabric and the relationship between secular and religious authority in six consecutive periods. The areas once forming the main public spaces are reshaped to enable links with the modern public space of the historic center, the square of Asia Minor. The intervention area is divided into three urban sections, the Porto, the Piazzetta, and the Piazza having various characteristics. In each section, the monuments - urban artifacts are identified. Public space and green network is formed to enable connections between the fragmented parts of the urban fabric. The demolition of existing structures is proposed where necessary to strengthen urban transitions and visual connections between monuments and public spaces. New buildings and canopies are designed to form the urban fronts in the three sections. Finally, the restoration of the Venetian Clock Tower, remnants of which survive in adjacent structures is proposed. The proposal restores its geometry and interprets the missing parts of its architectural elements while preserving its values. The Clock Tower will turn into a landmark of the square that is recreated on the area once occupied by the Venetian Piazzetta.

B. COMPETITIONS

Summary The project aims to fulfill various objectives such as resolving the town - countryside relationship and connecting the urban and rural system.

The main purpose is to strengthen urbanity by using parameters like the urban complexity, and the urban density, while enhancing the social ties, and social variety to give identity to the urban tissue. The employed tools concerned the definition of the urban border, the hierarchization of the urban space, and the connection between town and port. The urban intervention assigns an urban role to the Azenha do Mar access road, proposes a connection between the Vicentina route and the public space network, and structures the urban front of the cliffs. The intervention serves as a counterpoint between the urban tissue and urban references. In the project, a system of public spaces, such as squares, parks, and playgrounds, is proposed, while the urban infill is achieved through the variation of the building types. Intermediate public spaces such as gardens, courtyards, and patios are formed. Finally, the transition between the urban scales, from the public to private, is accomplished by using a unified urban system, which varies according to the different neighborhood scales.

co ur la what: urban design project who: Tzompanakis Alexios (Prof. of Urban Design-coordinator), Athanasiou Iosif-Petros & Stefanakis Stylianos (students) why: panhellenic architectural ideas competition where: Neapoli, Peloponnese, Greece when: June 2015 Summary The project proposal aims to revitalize the city of Neapoli by restoring its seafront. The transitions between the urban tissue and the seafront axis are strengthened. The axis is proposed to be downscaled into a one-way street. The resulting open space will be turned into public including various urban clusters, which will accommodate different uses. The urban fabric is divided into three sections regarding its orientation. The west section serves as the east entrance to the project area, as well as the intermediate space between the urban and rural system. The central section represents the coherent part of the urban tissue, where the seafront axis, the pier, and the extensions to the coastline are coming across. In this section, cafes and other leisure facilities are placed. In the last section (east), which is characterized by increasing urbanization, sports facilities, and a small-scale theater are proposed to be constructed. Finally, the port, which connects Neapoli with the nearby islands, will remain in its original position and serve as a public space.

ar ur la what: marine research center and public park who: Markozani Elisavet, Sideri Xristilena, Stefanakis Stylianos (students) why: architectural design studio viii, landscape design studio where: Chania, Crete, Greece when: June 2014 Summary The project aims to create a park and a marine research center, in an area where there are remnants of a soap factory. The area has a sharp terrain and is located in proximity to the sea, two elements characterizing the Mediterranean landscape. The main design principle is to maintain and enhance the landscape by designing levels in the terrain. The units of the marine research complex and the structural elements of the park follow the terraced landscape and emerge from the folding of the terrain, providing a smooth transition from the highest point to the sea. Moreover, the complex includes public facilities such as a library and a small-scale aquarium, while a restaurant is placed in the restored factory shell. The materials used in the complex achieve the transparency of the facades of the proposed units, which are covered by green roofs and are integrated into the landscape. In addition, the use of water as a structural element of the park relinks the area with the sea. The coastal road turns into a pedestrian, while the park is extended by levels to the seacoast.

Finally, to highlight the industrial memory of the area, a circular path is designed, around the water and the surviving factory shell, through the levels and is enhanced by the vegetation of Mediterranean species. concept diagrams

Summary The project due to its location, part of the Venetian fortifications, aims to redefine the relationship between the remnants of the past and the contemporary urban tissue. The proposed residential unit, which belongs to a complex, highlights the relationship between the modern way of living and the remnants, without intervening in their shape and form. The project principles are reflected in the interior design of the residence achieving the visual connection of its levels, as well as the indoor and outdoor space. The residence is formed into three levels following a vertical division of uses from the public to private. The first level houses common domestic uses such as the dining room, the kitchen, and sanitary facilities. It is in close proximity to the wall and has direct access to the garden. In the second level, there is the living room, which is placed above the Venetian walls to provide a panoramic view of the sea, and the city. The private domestic uses are located on the third level. A timber screen placed along the corridor acts as a filter between the private and public section of the house. The interior spaces are characterized by translucence, simplicity of the form, and structural honesty. Its furniture is designed according to the architectural composition of the residence.

Stylianos Stefanakis is an Engineer Architect with an MSc degree in Conservation of Monuments and Sites from KU Leuven. He graduated from the School of Architectural Engineering of the TU Crete (MEng). He is experienced in developing conceptual synergies between theory and practice. He was trained in the architectural scale, the urban design and urbanism scale, as well as the landscape and regional planning scale. He participated in urban design competitions, architectural and urban design workshops. He attended national and international conferences.
