nursing home + student housing
ex-Military Base “Mihajlo Apostolski”- Ohrid
From NGO initiative to student project, the ex-military base in Ohrid has come a long way. What began as a community event sparked by the Macedonian Architectural Association has now blossomed into a semester-long exploration of its potential. As a student and participant in the initial project, I'm thrilled to dive deeper into its forgotten corners and imagine its possibilities.

Student Housing
ex-Military
Nestled at the heart of the student campus, a striking round tower rises, its windows offering breathtaking panoramas of the surrounding landscape. This isn't just a dormitory; it's a gateway to the vibrant tapestry of nature and culture woven into the very fabric of the environment. Each floor unfolds like a chapter in a story, with 12 rooms clustered in three distinct layouts, stacked gracefully one above the other. These clusters spill out into expansive communal spaces, some soaring double-height, that breathe life into the tower's facade.
Adding an image of the round tower would instantly set the scene and bring a description to life. Imagine a capturing the tower's unique silhouette against the backdrop of the natural and cultural landmarks it over-

On the existing tarmac that unfolds in front of the three existing buildings, this project proposes transformation to elevated platform, stretching 5 meters from the ground, forming circles filled with various programmes. As presented in the site plan it includes a gallery, library, multipurpose hall, sauna and entertament for the students needs. The initiative comes from an idea to preserve the existing trees on the ground and give purpuse to the unused space.

Nursing home

Given the qualities of the site and deficiencies of the city, it was decided that the north east side of the urban fragment would be ideal for a nursing home for the eldelry population.
The entrance opens up with monumantal essence that invites the users with a sence of a relief and gratitude. From there, the axis stretches out to the proposed lake with a chapel at the end as dominant point, which is visible from all the structures that are metabolically attached to the central path.

Nursing home

This nursing home strategically integrates utilitarian functions with resident well-being. A dedicated warehouse fosters both internal and potentially community waste management, while the central restaurant connects residents to nature through its ground-floor location and outdoor seating. A combined medical, fitness, and sauna complex promotes holistic health, and strategically placed storage spaces optimize functionality. Overall, the design prioritizes environmental responsibility, social interaction, and physical and mental well-being, creating a supportive environROOMS 1:50

The concept consist of three key elements:
-The intervention acknowledges all the existing trees on the given location and provides pathways through and around them, giving the users a calm and fresh atmosphere,
-It opens up, preserves and presents the landmark of the old school structure “Idadija” from 1820 with a significant importance to the cities cultural and historical heritage,
-And last but not least, it connects the urban fragment with the cities central park, so pedestrians and cyclist can easally transverse without crossing the boulevard deviding them. This adds up to the cities mobility and gives a possible solution for a traffic problem.

ARHRID COLLECTIVE
Arhrid board members
The first appearance of ARHRID as an entity took place in the form of a personal solo project back in 2019, when urban scenes from Ohrid were photographically documented. The collective moment was conceived due to the dissatisfaction surrounding the demolition of the "Park" restaurant, the work of arch. Pavel Balaban, a building that belonged to a series of successful architectural achievements from the second half of the 20th century in Ohrid. Inspired by this incident, the ARCHRID collective is conceived as the embodiment of everyday conversations about architecture and the city, about the urban environment, the directions of the city's development and their articulation in the form of a collective professional attitude. The idea is to gradually raise the awareness of every resident of the city about the values of architecture, especially emphasizing what was built in the post-war period, in order to avoid the remaining buildings from this period suffering the same fate as the "Park" restaurant. In 2022, ARHRID registers as an association and starts it with the first event "Kasarna Talks".
Arhrid’s general principles are:
EDUCATION and PROMOTION, i.e. raising awareness of the architectural and urban values of the city and presenting them in a way that is easily understandable for all citizens, which implies the organization of events, lectures, exhibitions and the like.
PROTECTION of the existing cultural heritage, as well as recognition and appreciation of architectural creativity and urban fragments with a focus on the new part of the city. We feel that this part of the city is neglected and insufficiently (at all?) treated by the protection institutions, and it represents everyday life for the residents of Ohrid.
URBAN INTERVENTIONS for the activation of the space between the built (objects) and the unbuilt (common, public, green or gray space), which will build a connection with contemporary trends in architecture - as a continuation of the rare examples of urban equipment found on public areas in the new part of the city (unfortunately most largely damaged / degraded).
FORUM as an incubator of ideas and proposals, exchange of information, materials and encouragement of constructive critical discussions on current topics, the creation of which is perhaps the most important goal of the collective, and refers to the association of all experts in the field of architecture and urbanism who consider that in any way they can contribute to the formation of professional public critical thought.

ARHRID COLLECTIVE
What started out as an initiative came students semestral project
On the 16 and 17 of March, students from the Faculty of Architecture and Design, at the University American College Skopje, visited Ohrid for a study visit, in the organization by UACS, and the Archrid Collective.
During their two-day visit, at 16.03. the students were welcomed at the “Mihailo Apostolski” barracks, a subject for their design task for the upcoming semester. Members of Archrid and Kasarna Hub introduced the students to the site and its boundaries, as well as its contents and natural features.
Later in the day, the students were also treated to a presentation held in the amphitheater of the University of Information Sciences and Technologies – “St. Paul the Apostle” Ohrid. The presentation was opened by UACS’s Prof. Dr. Mishko Ralev and followed up by members of Archrid, such as mag. eng. arch. Emilia Stojanoska, mag.eng. arch. Hristina Alexioska and Stefan Zupan. An open panel discussion followed the presentation.
All in all, this is still an active initiative, that needs gives the everyday users more awarness of the spaceand build environment they are part of.

“Connecting Europe through architectural heritage’’
Ohrid, Macedonia/ Berat, Albania/ Ljubljana, Slovenia/ Vienna, Austria Brussels, Belgium/ Rotterdam, Netherlands
Despite all the political and ideological divergence in Europe, we can also see moments of reference, a thing notable in every artistic aspect, a borrowing of elements on every piece left by artists or architects. From the constant communication present in Boris Čipan’s and Dušan Grabrijan’s literature to the footprint on Viennese Secession in Ljubljana’s early 20th-century school brought by Plečnik’s work with Otto Wagner. We see a blurry, yet eternal language that architecture connects various areas of Europe. A consequence and reflection of the precursory system that echoes in the language that architectural heritage carries.
The whole material and research for this format of the thesis “Connecting Europe through architectural heritage” was worked in the period from 06.26.2022 up until the 13.12.2022.
Even tho in the beggining the idea had strictly documentational character it streched out with quite a theoretical background and It has the potential for further development in the future, with many questions opened up...
The whole process was supported by Organization of world heritage cities, Monika Goettler who coordinated and provided contacts allong the way, Regina Wiala-Zimm & Ing. Mag. Rudolf Zunke from Stadt Wien & Stadtplanung Wien, arch. Paula Cordeiro from Ville de Bruxelles, Arhrid Kolektiv as well as my friends and family.
