H YPERLOOP FUTURISTIC CAMPUS AT NEVADA DESERTS

As the future speeds in, we must make room for innovations and brace ourselves for technologies to come. With the emergence of hyperloop as today’s speed dream, we would be moving conveniently from one point to another in no time inside a capsule that moves inside a vacuumed tube. The impossible has become a possibility.

Like the Hyperloop, inhabiting a harsh environment would not be out of the ordinary. In fact, when great innovation meets sustainability, comfort and refuge for the human life are possible. In the deserts of Nevada, “The Orb” represents an optimistic visualization of this future. It celebrates the invention of the hyperloop and fosters its numerous tests and simulations.

With the enveloping ETFE structure, “The Orb” is a conditioned environement that embraces the buildings within and provides thermal and visual comfort for its visitors, students, and residents. The geometry is based on its semi-spherical dome shell that consists of structural modules, which has allowed for a near column-free interior. The structural modules of the shell are also integrated with solar panels to provide both aesthetic beauty and sustainable power to support the life in it.

THE FOLDING ROCK

NATURE RETREAT AT DISCOVERY PARK, SEATTLE, WA

The word “retreat” means to step back and withdraw from daily lives. Being away from the city could mean so much for people who’d like to start anew and refresh their minds.

The nature retreat is dedicated for visitors to have a temporary place for work and rest away from the city. Situated on the beach of Discovery Park, the nature retreat is inspired by the existing conditions of the site. The folding shape of the walls is inspired by a person covering themselves for protection and refuge from the harsh winds. The building is wedged into the hill. The concrete walls are designed to blend with the ground. Upon entering the building, one foreshadows a sense of compression and protection. On the contrary, when they enter the building, the interior provides a sense of openness. The unity of spaces in the building gives a sense of rest as one can stand on different spots and still be in the same place.

REFLECTED CEILING PLAN Made up of roof joists that are spaced closely to each other, the ceiling resembles the branches of a tree. Whereas the concrete walls that surround the entire building represents stone.

LEVEL TWO: LIVING SPACES This level primarily serves as a resting and dining area that hovers the social area.

Located behind the trees, an outdoor space that offers more privacy is accessible on the right-hand-side.

LEVEL ONE: SOCIAL SPACES Double-height living area with fireplace encourages social and outdoor interaction.

Partially embedded into the eroding bluff, the working area provides a quite place that encourages deep contemplations.

This level also serves a function of providing water closet and storage.

The residence is designed to for a couple of newlyweds. Using light colored textured plaster and wood, the facade feels minimalistic but light by playing with the massing. The layout was designed to be functional and efficient. The interior design has a modern feel that soothes the residents.

The design concept for the lobby of Paramount Land’s office lobby embodies the company’s spirit as an effective and functional workspace while being sensitive to users, context, and culture. The goal is to create an open workspace environment -not merely limited to the building, but also the atmosphere, space, and quality of life inside.

Inspired by minimalistic and aesthetic spaces, the intent is to have brighter and transparent ambience by playing with neutral colours and textured materials. Transparent materials such as glass and perforated panels make a great combination and, when juxtaposed with subtle tones of neutrals, achieve calming atmosphere for the lobby.

A design concept that embodies the life and caters the needs and of its elderly residents. The goal for Cinere Elderly Homes is to create a safe haven, an environment, not merely limited to building and interior but more to the atmosphere, space and quality of experience for the residents. The shape represents sanctuary, relaxation and comfort but at the same time a place to gather, to be active and to share stories.

It is a place that celebrates life.

The design scheme is a layered approach where each levels has rooms for activities facing outwards for natural lights, view and supported with an outdoor area.

Sama Sama Hotel is a modern hotel destination that aims to accomodate outgoing and social-spirited visitors and tourists, particularly those who love to work remotely.

The main challenge of this project is to repurpose an already-existing building. The building was previously a hotel chain, but had been sold to a new owner. In this project, we wanted to give the building a new identity and life by redefining its facade and main programs. The design of the facade is inspired by the compositions of bricks in conventional buildings in Bali.

Stone bricks are commonly used as foundation and walls in vernacular Balinese buildings.

Our interpretation of the stone brick arrangements and repetitions for the building facade.

Shift every alternating layer to create visual playfulness and dynamism.

The facade is a series of wooden boxes that mimick the stone bricks.

The arrangement is supported by a new structural system

ATRIUM AS THE HEART OF THE BUILDING The corridors are on the perimeter of the building, making the guest rooms face the center of the building atrium. In the atrium, the restaurant and bar are built on a new structural system that shapes multiple levels of dining areas and a glasshouse. INNOVATION H UB AT CENTRAL DISTRICT, SEATTLE, WA

The building is inspired by the history of the Central District as Seattle’s biggest African American neighborhood. With the recent gentrification and rise in living costs, the AfricanAmerican population has significantly dropped.

In collaboration with a group of clients and stakeholders, the innovation hub is designed to be a center for black communities in the greater Seattle area. Located in the intersection of E Yesler Way and 23rd Avenue S, the hub offers rental start-up office spaces, retails, and housing. Above the street level is the Catholic Community Services/Randolph Carter Center. Despite the great variety of programs in the building, the hub features a central courtyard to which every space in the building is centered. The hub is designed to promote social interaction through common spaces, porosity, circulation, and visual connection.

The metallic appearance of the piece has inspired the copper envelope of the building. The colors and horizontal-vertical knitting pattern on the upper right part of the art piece have driven the color panels on the apartment balconies. The facade on top of the main entrance is made of perforated metal with a graphic that honors Martin Luther King, Jr. The wooden slats enveloping the upper ground level is inspired by the rhythm of jazz music.

The lower ground level is where the start-up office spaces are.

The offices are facilitated with two computer labs, conference rooms, and a two-story fabrication lab. Located across the main courtyard and the forum, the coworking space is a set up as a modern office where millennials can bring their laptops, pick open seats, and work. It also has a lounge and common kitchen for users to socialize and increase network. The forum is open to the public and can be used for events.

Located in the intersection of E Yesler Way and 23rd Avenue S, the main entrance is a curved two-story high space with large sliding copper panels. The walls are inscribed with the names that honor the African-American history. Entrances in between the retail spaces have connectivity to the buildings across the site. The Randolph Carter Center has a separate entrance on the south end of the building.

TOTEM LAKE BRIDGE VIA ARCH ITECTURE | KIRKLAND, WA

The City of Kirkland hired the consultant team of COWI, VIA, and MIG/SVG to design a safe and memorable crossing over its busiest corridor. As the key link in the Cross Kirkland Corridor, the Totem Lake Connector will act as a structurally dramatic bridge, becoming an icon for the city and Totem Lake.

Four distinct structual options were developed that engage the site in dynamic fashion. Through a strong public engagement process of three open houses and online voting, the structural form and expressions of the preferred alternative gained support. The design focuses on engaging the local context in a dynamic and memorable manner.

STRUCTURE AS ART

The rest area engages the metaphor at the traffic island, and the bridge deck is enlarged to emphasize the skipping of the stone. The gradient pixelization to express the ripple pattern creates a dynamic visual effect and allows for ease of application and installation.

The bridge incorporates fluid form, engaging the connection between Lake Washington and Totem Lake. The implied sense of motion of a skipping stone towards Totem Lake expresses the reconnection between the community and nature.

BARNES HOUSE PATKAU ARCH ITECTS | PRECEDENT STUDY

As a team precedent study project, the Barnes House model served as an analysis of the structural system and materiality established by Patkau Architects. Barnes House is embedded on a rocky outcrop somewhere on the Strait of Georgia. The model-making process gave us the opportunity to explore the irregularity and variability of space and the massing of the design. We had the opportunity to examine the structural hierarchy and better understand how different materials - concrete facade, wooden structure, and steel roof - come together as one building.

The use of natural elements as materials allowed the building to have connectivity with its natural surrounding and at the same time provide shelter to its occupants.

Belitung Island has become a new popular holiday destination among tourists, with its beautiful beaches, blue waters, and natural landscapes. With the prospects of increasing visitors, the Belitung Resort Masterplan was made to fit future developments including hotel, villas, beach club, retail area, and event halls.

DOWNTOWN SEATTLE

VIA ARCH ITECTURE | 3D PRINTED SITE MODEL

Downtown Seattle is growing rapidly with new high-rise buildings. The site model is a two-month long 3D printing project in VIA Architecture to help the design process of the new residential high-rise tower. The site was printed one block at a time with wooden PLA filament and put together with custom attachment pieces. Future neighboring buildings that are under construction or development are detachable.
