From the Editor I often hear people say, “You’re lucky to live at the beach.” I am. It wasn’t
always this way though. I didn’t grow up by the beach; I grew up in the city; taking Septa buses to school and eating Federal Street pretzels and Pop's Water Ice. But as I look back, I realize, I was always on the sand. Because to me, the beach is a state of mind. Yes, it’s a physical place, but it’s also a mind set. One that can transport you to a better state of being just by thinking of laying on its warm silky sand. It was on those days back in the city, while I sat in traffic looking at lots of tall buildings, that I imagined I was at the beach. On tough days even now, I imagine I’m sitting on my red, green, and blue striped chair sinking into the grains as I settle more and more into a peaceful comfort. I visualized being on the beach while I was in labor last year with my little girl and I try to imagine the salt air when I need to take deep breaths far from shore. I think that’s why people fall in love with Ocean City. It’s a place of calm and fun that you can go back to anytime you want, just by closing your eyes and hearing the seagull’s call or the waves crashing onto the shore. The beach is a place to relax, take it slow and enjoy yourself and your family. Because really, what’s better than that? Did someone say pizza? Maybe. After all, pizza is king and OC does have some of the finest pies in the area. Check out Battle Brick Oven Pizza to see what our writers think of two local pies. This month you’ll also find features on Tuesday Movie Nights, The Heart of Surfing festival, and the JDRF. The Fantastic Five give Vittorio's on Asbury a try this month and Bill Godfrey meets the reigning Empanada Queen from the new Hug a Mug Cafe. In June, it's prime beach time... if you can't be here take a look at pages 56 and 57 – photographer Beth Ferris Sale shares her photo of a summer beach. Heaven. Until next time, wishing you plenty of moments by the shore to capture and keep for another day.
FACEBOOK FAN OF THE MONTH Becky Stoltzfus Ocean City, NJ is the most wonderful place to vacation! My two daughters Cindy, Denise and I took many day trips from PA back in the '70s and '80s. More recently, they have been taking me there to celebrate my birthday in October. We’ve been doing this for seven years, and it is one of the highlights of my year! We stay for a week at Watsons Regency, which is on Ocean Avenue, just a couple blocks from the Boardwalk. On a perfect day in Ocean City, I would start out by waking up around 9am. The weather would be sunny, warm, and breezy. I would make a pot of coffee in our beautiful kitchen, then I would head out for breakfast at one of the local restaurants. A favorite place is Varsity Inn, where they have great omelets! After breakfast I would walk to the Boardwalk and browse in the shops. I love finding bargains at Jilly's Dollar Store and sales on t-shirts, sweatshirts, and jewelry in the souvenir shops. I would later enjoy some boardwalk fries or pizza at Manco and Manco, and I'd relax on a bench and watch the people walking by. I love talking to other vacationers and seeing where they are from. If the weather is warm, I might walk out on the beach and get my feet wet. Time flies when I’m out on the Boardwalk, and before I know it, it’s time to eat again. My daughters and I would go out to the Point Diner or the Chatterbox, or we we'd cook in the condo. After dinner, I would take another walk out to the Boardwalk to see the sunset and watch the waves. The rest of the evening would be filled with our favorite TV shows, movies, card games, and lots of laughter! I might even go out to the Boardwalk one more time to see the moonlight on the water. Staying up late is part of the fun, as I enjoy every single minute of my time in Ocean City!

I
’M TELLING you Ocean City, you’re in for some gooooood food this summer. I just got some empanadas from the brand new Hug A Mug Café at First and Asbury and they are beeeeeeeast! “They’re made with love,” said Erica Saldia, the new Empanada Queen of Ocean City. “Everything tastes better when it’s made with love.” Seriously, these past couple years have brought some cool new businesses to town

and Hug A Mug Café is a great addition. Owner Pete Johnson is a restaurant veteran who simply wanted to be in Ocean City and here he is. His niece Erica is the brains behind the empanadas and they are some of the best I’ve ever had. “It’s all in the dough,” she said. “You could get dough from Goya or something but it wouldn’t be my dough.” Pete Johnson and his family opened OC’s newest eatery on May 1. “I have 20 years in the restaurant business,” said Pete. “I did some retail for a
while but restaurants are in my blood so I came back to it. And Ocean City is where I want to be.” So if you want to try making empanadas at home, go for it. You could get premade discs at the supermarket or maybe some pre-made pizza dough at your local
pizzeria. I’ll let Erica walk you through the process (see below). But if you’re lazy like me and you want the real deal empanadas right away with no fuss, then go to Hug A Mug Café. They’re open seven days from 7am to 3pm. They have a great menu including scones and sandwiches too. Recommended! IT’S ALL IN THE DOUGH OC mag: Okay so you’ve got some dough there, when did you make that? Erica: I just made this dough this morning. This is the freshest of the fresh. OC mag: Can you tell us what’s in the dough? Erica: Uh… (laughs). Well there’s flour and eggs… it’s a no-yeast dough, does that help? OC mag: Bit of a secret, eh? But you need to let that dough chill after you make it, correct? Erica: Yes. It’s very soft when I first make it. I normally make it at night and let it sit overnight so it will firm up. But our cooler is cold so it’s already firm from this morning. OC mag: So since you don’t want to reveal your secret dough recipe can you
use any kind of dough? Erica: Yeah, I mean, if you want to try this at home you could use a bread dough I guess, or a pizza dough, or maybe Goya frozen discs from the supermarket, but it wouldn’t be as good as my dough, know what I mean? OC mag: So you take a chunk of the big dough ball, break off a smaller piece and roll each empanada separately? Erica: We make these to order. I roll the dough in a ball then I use a rolling pin to roll it out. Then I cut it with my cookie
cutter. And then I roll it out some more. Nice and thin, so when it fries up it’s light and fluffy like a pastry. That’s the way I like it. OC mag: So how did you come to be the Empanada Queen of Ocean City? I just made that up by the way. Erica: It all originated in Bolivia. My

family is Bolivian. My dad’s right from Bolivia and my grandmom used to make these when I was little… so I’m just going to stuff this with the bacon and eggs that my Uncle Pete just made. Then I add some American cheese. So anyway Bolivia. My mom used to make them at home. She didn’t make her own dough and they were still good. But I always liked to cook and my dad always told me to make my
own dough. So I experimented for a while and came up with this recipe. OC mag: What’s that little move you’re making to close the dough? Erica: It’s called the “pinch and roll.” OC mag: Ah yes, the old pinch and roll. It’s doesn’t look that easy. Erica: I’m okay at it. My mom is better. I put a little water around the edge to help it seal and I also use a fork to fork them
closed. So now it’s tightly closed… and there you have it! It’s pretty simple but it takes time. It took me a long time to get this right. I’d sit at my table for hours working on this. Then my dad would come over and say “that’s not how my mom did it!” And I would say “I’m not your mom!” But he likes the dough so if dad approves, then that’s what matters. OC mag: So while this looks doable at home, there appears to be a degree of expertise here that’s taking them to another level. That pinch and roll looks like some YouTube instruction might help as well. Erica: You can do this at home, just stuff them with whatever you want. But I make my own dough, that’s the hardest part. And I think that’s what makes mine taste really good.

Battle of the Brick Oven Pizzas
Some kind of sorcery happening here?
Sweet and surprisingly delicious!
Is it prosciutto or “prozute?” Are there little magical Italian elves working behind the counters at Bennie’s? Will I ever get to stand up paddleboard? Life is full of questions, but believe me, the only question that matters is… when and where can I get my next slice of pizza? If you're a true pizza snob, like, hehem, me... then you are always on the look out for a pie that goes above and beyond, like a super pie. Last time I went into Bennie's Italian Market, I watched a couple pies come out of the fancy oven and have been ready to try one ever since. Specifically, the Margherita pizza with prosciutto. There is no denying that some kind of sorcery is
Pizza should be declared the official food of Ocean City. And when it comes to pizza I’m up for anything. I’m an oldschool, thin crust, Friday night gorge-fest kind of guy, but if you’ve got a twist, I’m game. The Piccini menu has some great gourmet choices and I decided on the Sweet Chicken Pie. “It’ll be sweet,” said the girl on the phone as I ordered. “How sweet can it be?” I asked. “I mean, it’s pizza.” But sweet it was. In the best sense. Brick oven adds a heartier flavor to a pie than a regular oven. I can often tell a brick oven pizza right away – darker color, smoky flavor and a chewier crust. I don’t think I ever had mascarpone cheese on a pizza but what
She Said happening at the corner Italian Market at 12th and Asbury. Yes, they use 00 flour to achieve a perfect light airy crust, but there’s definite witchery in the way the sauce pairs with the fresh basil, the fresh mozzarella, and the super thin ham. This isn’t pizza that will kill your diet - it’s a smaller slice, but filled with tons of flavor and texture that’s hard to describe except to say that you get a little crunch followed by a perfect chew. The dough was tender to the point of nearly melting in my mouth. It’s witchcraft… Bippity Boppity Prosciutto!
Bennie's Bread and Italian Market 1159 Asbury Avenue, Ocean City
He Said a taste sensation. Combine the mascarpone with mozzarella, provolone, smoked gouda and ricotta cheeses along with caramelized onions and bam! I was skeptical about all those flavors at one time. The sweetness of the onions and the mascarpone next to that meaty gouda and the mild ricotta made me wonder what I was getting into. But the folks at Piccini are pros so I threw caution to the wind and was rewarded with a pie that was surprisingly delicious. And it was cooked just right. The cheeses were melty, the chicken still tender and the crust firm but chewy.

VITTORIO'S TRATTORIA
The fantastic five take a tour de Italia at this friendly Asbury Avenue spot
W
HEN YOU’RE here, you’re family. This greeting began our lovely, and very tasty, experience at Vittorio’s Trattoria on Asbury. As usual, our crew blew into this establishment like a whirlwind. It was Captain Steve Rogers, Dr. Bruce Banner (don’t make him angry), Russianspy-turned-All-American-girl Natasha Romanoff, my trusted companion Pepper Potts, and myself, Tony Stark. We’d just completed a dangerous mission (someone had to stop Ultron from feeding the seagulls) and we were looking to relax and refuel. We assembled early for dinner as is our habit. Our crew can be boisterous so we like to eat early and avoid crowds when we can. What we discovered at Vittorio’s is a quaint dining space with tablecloths (nice!), a warm vibe and a friendly crew that made us feel right at home. Our server was Antonio and his thick

Italian accent brought me back to my time in Philadelphia and the excellent restaurants we used to frequent back in the day. He was a friendly chap and reassured us that it was no problem that Natasha was throwing stuff on the floor. “Please,” he insisted, “just enjoy yourselves. Don’t worry about anything.” We chatted for a bit and while we perused the menu Antonio brought us fresh bread accompanied by a roasted eggplant caponata that set the tone for the entire meal. In a word, it was outstanding. Let me state the obvious by saying that Ocean City is casual. I’ve found visitors tend to leave their normal dining habits behind when they hit the beach. The fine eats that one might find at say, 9th and Christian in Philadelphia get left behind in favor of pizza
and popcorn once you’re on island time. But Vittorio Ottaviano, who owns and operates the place with his brother Luigi and son in law Claudio have a really good thing here. This restaurant is laid-back and casual but the food is truly delicious. You can taste the freshness. These guys know what they’re doing and you’ll notice it right away. While we were devouring the caponata, Antonio brought us a dish of Mozzarella Pomodoro. This was among the best fried mozzarella I’ve ever had. It was obviously a quality cheese that was perfectly fried to a nice light crisp. The pomodoro sauce had a hint of basil and olive oil that sent my taste buds soaring. So my first impression was one of quality. Our first two appetizers were obviously fresh-made. These were not frozen mozzarella sticks. This was chef-made food. Speaking of the chef, we were able to meet him. Chef Hiram Quintana is a Philadelphia guy who’s worked in kitchens

for 24 years. When Vittorio and company asked him if he wanted to move to Ocean City for a new adventure, he said yes. “I’ve known the family a long time,” he said. “I was excited for this new project so I relocated.” Captain Rogers and Dr. Banner ordered their usual chicken fingers, but instead of the traditional finger, these were cutlets. Again, I was struck by their freshness. These reminded me of chicken cutlets made by Pepper Potts' Italian grandmother Rae. They were pounded thin and they were properly seasoned and cooked. Pepper Potts ordered the classic chicken parm. This was partially because she likes chicken parm and partially a test – chicken parm is a litmus test for Italian restaurants. You get the chicken parm right and the rest of the menu is probably just as good. Again the breast was thin, crispy and properly seasoned, memorable for its easily-chewed, light texture and fine taste. “This reminds me of one of my favorite restaurants in South Philly,” said Pepper. “The sauce has a rich flavor but it's light.” I, of course, went with a burger. I can hear all of you now, “why oh why did you
“We have a mixed menu that fits everybody,” said Claudio in his still-thick Italian accent. “Dinner is mostly Italian. And it was the first time I ever had crab meat on my burger. It was a good size burger on a toasted roll with great flavor and cooked medium just as I’d asked. Know what else was good? The fries. I’ve said before, if you’re going to put something on a plate and give it to me, it should be thoughtful and well-prepared, not an afterthought. Italian-themed music – mandolins, Sinatra, Dean Martin, etc. – played softly in the background as we dined and discussed our most recent missions. We truly felt at ease and that famous Italian hospitality permeated the air. “We’ve been in the restaurant business many years,” Claudio continued. “The last time we were in Ocean City we decided to open a restaurant. There are a lot of good places here but no authentic Italian restaurants. That’s why we use the tablecloths – to set ourselves apart. It’s a different atmosphere here.” Different perhaps but delicious for sure. Til next time... Stay hungry, America.
go with a burger in a nice Italian joint?” And I answer “because I can!” Ocean City restaurateurs know that you have to cater to the clientele. Sure a lot of people love those Italian specialties (the chicken parm was light and flavorful, not heavy and overburdened) but you must have something for those without a trained Italian palette.

ADORABLE CREATURE OF THE MONTH
Indigo Bunting Photographed by Ray Zaleski
THOUGH A common bird to these parts, indigo buntings can be secretive little fellows and a little more challenging to spot. Our photographer found this one at 52nd Street. The all-blue male Indigo Bunting sings with cheerful gusto and looks like a scrap of sky with wings. Sometimes nicknamed “blue canaries,” these brilliantly colored yet common and widespread birds whistle their bouncy songs through the late spring and summer all over eastern North America. Look for Indigo Buntings in weedy fields and shrubby areas near trees, singing from dawn to dusk atop the tallest perch in sight or foraging for seeds and insects in low vegetation. - allaboutbirds.org

Teresa Citera from Yoasis Beach Bowls How long have you worked here? For about a month. Favorite item on the menu? The Powerhouse Smoothie is really good. Do you prefer smoothies or the acai bowls? If you are hungry go for the bowls, but if you just want something sweet and are on the go, then definitely go for the smoothie. Plans for the summer? Making a lot of bowls and smoothies. Coolest place traveled? Rock of Gibraltar. What is it? The Rock of Gibraltar shows an amazing view over Morocco. I went to Europe on a school trip last summer and the rock was a stop on our tour.
Lucia Casaleno from Hoy’s How long have you worked here? This will be my fifth summer. What is your favorite item in store? Hoy's has a great section for beach games. I love playing Waboba ball and paddle ball. I can get pretty competitive while playing paddle ball. What is your favorite part about working at Hoy's? The people I work with make it really fun and I get to see new faces each week. Where is your favorite place to get ice cream in OC? Either Kohr's or Kessel's, its a tie. Favorite flavor? Chocolate chip cookie dough – hands down. Last movie you saw? Despicable Me 2. Who can resist the cuteness of the minions? And the sound track's pretty good.

Questions
for Kristin Gallagher director of community services by Victoria Cleveland
What first brought you to Ocean City?
My husband Chad grew up here; he went to Ocean City High School. We bought our first house in Ocean City in 2001, but we moved here permanently in July 2014. We have two daughters, Mia is 9 and Brynn is 7.
How did you first become involved with the community services sector of Ocean City?
It was a little bit of serendipity. After we decided to move here permanently, I kept running into people and finally, somebody said “What are you doing here all the time?” It was a few days later that I got a call from the Mayor’s office, and I got to meet Mayor Gillian and his team. It really was kind of a fluke that we had moved into town and that he was planning to recreate the position for the Director of the Community Services department, and my skill set was so well aligned for the role, so it was a win-win.
What is the daily schedule like for you?
It's never the same. It is a very busy and fast-paced job because I’m responsible for not only the PR and media relations, but also the community center which houses the Aquatic and Fitness Center, and all of our recreation programs throughout Ocean City as well as our Music Pier operations and our Pops [orchestra]. The Pops are actually the only municipally-funded orchestra in the country, so it’s a very unique and talented group. My job is very diverse, working with the Chamber of Commerce and our special events to running summer camps and offering programs at the Bayside Center, to doing media plans, forming committees for Night in Venice. Our administration in Ocean City has been so helpful and so supportive.
What is the best part of the job so far?
Definitely the people. It’s been a really unique and fun way to move to a new town. My team is phenomenal. So many dedicated professionals, working with such dedication. It’s a great community. I feel humbled to have this role because it’s just such a special and unique town that unless you live here, you really can't appreciate how truly special it is. I have never worked and lived in the same place, I always commuted to work. Having the opportunity to drop my kids off at school and then drive to work a couple blocks down is great. There were years where I was commuting from suburbs of Pennsylvania to NYC for work every day. I attend a Boardwalk Merchants meeting monthly, and it never gets old for me to walk up the ramp and realize I am going to the Music Pier for a meeting.
What is the most popular community event?
I believe there are as many events in Ocean City as there are days in the year. There is literally something for everyone. Every age group, every special interest group... everyone can find something they love in Ocean City. That’s why our town is always so bustling with people. My personal favorite event is just sitting on the beach after the lifeguards leave. We like to just hang out on the paddleboards, when sun is still up and the crowds are gone.
What is the most important aspect of your job?
Customer service. We are the boots on the ground. When someone calls, someone on my team is picking up the phone. Someone on my team is answering that email. When a child is going to a playground camp, someone is helping to coach and be a part of their experience in Ocean City. That is paramount.

Ocean City Arts Center Monthly Exhibitions: Invitational Themed Show “My Letter Carrier” Invitational Themed Show “Meet the Artists Reception” – June 12, 7-8:30pm 2015 marks the 10th annual Invitational Themed Show at the Ocean City Arts Center. This year the Themed Show leans towards the personal, in particular, the relationship that everyone has with his or her letter carrier. For artists, writers, and academics working alone in their studios and libraries, the letter carrier offers a daily contact with the outside world other than their families. It is no wonder that so many artists have painted portraits of their postal carriers: for many of them, it has been almost a de rigueur addition to their oeuvre. The theme must have struck a chord, because 32 local artists agreed to participate in the show.

Local Ocean It’s History
Shedding Light on Local History with
Matchbook Covers By Fred Miller
A
SOUVENIR is a must after a vacation in Ocean City. A matchbook cover was once the cheapest and smallest memory of a wonderful time spent in America’s Greatest Family Resort. The small, but useful advertising gimmick spread like wildfire into the pockets, purses, and kitchen drawers of millions of Americans from the 1920s to the 1960s. Matchbooks saw a decline in popularity starting in the mid-1960s with the availability of disposable lighters and anti-smoking health campaigns. In 1962, the federal government decreed that friction strips had to be moved from the outside-front of a matchbook to the outside-back, thus ending the need for the famous phrase “Close Cover Before Striking.” With the strip in the front, failing to do so could allow a spark to light the other matches. The matchbook covers were a favorite advertising give-away for

restaurants. “Beck’s for Seafood” is credited with giving away the first restaurant matchbook cover in Ocean City. In 1936, the restaurant, located at the base of the 9th Street Bridge, advertised their platters and the cost, “ALL for 85 cents.” While most covers just used the front for getting their message out, some used the inside of the cover and even the matches themselves. In 1939, “Hogate’s for Seafood” (formally called Beck’s) had the most collectible of all the local matchbooks. The inside had a flap that showed a diner platter and, when the flap was lifted, a description of what the platter included for 85 cents. Even the matches included artwork. Other restaurants that gave away matchbook covers were: Chris’ Seafood Restaurant, The Culinary Garden, Dean’s Grille, Johnstone’s Café, Maier’s, Marquet’s, The Miriam Lee Coffee Shoppe, Simms’ Restaurant, and Watson’s Restaurant. The Flanders Hotel receives the credit for the first local hotel to advertise on a matchbook cover. People attending the grand opening of swimming pools in 1929 received “The Flanders on the Boardwalk” matchbooks. The following hotels also advertised on matchbook covers: Hotel Alvyn, Brighton Hotel, Harbor House Motel, Illinois Hotel, Hotel Lincoln, Plymouth Inn, Port-O-Call, and Sting Ray Motor Inn. Even the Ocean City Public Relations Department advertised on a matchbook cover in 1950:
“AMERICA’S GREATEST FAMILY RESORT; Your vacation is designed with the family budget in mind!” Other popular collectible matchbook covers from Ocean City included: Maxwell-Bennett Realtors, Carey’s Real Estate, French Real Estate, Boyd’s Television, Cone’s Newspapers, Druck PontiacCadillac, Gray Line Guided Tours, Haines Drug Store & Lunchette, Bushay’s Texaco Service Station, Brendlinger’s Boat Slips, Captain Allen & Sons, and Sally’s Sweet Shop. Recently, matchbook covers have begun to regain some of their popularity as a “retro” advertising item, particularly in restaurants.

MATTER OF ART
By Bill Godfrey
The artist is a receptacle for emotions that come from all over the place: from the sky, from the earth, from a scrap of paper, from a passing shape, from a spider’s web - Pablo Picasso I decided I wanted to introduce my kids to music as soon as they could hold an instrument. And that’s when I started their guitar lessons – as soon as they could hold a guitar. And as I searched for a good teacher I found several local parents who mentioned one guy – Robert Gummel. Robert has become a dedicated music mentor who’s brought my kids a long way in their music. But along the way I discovered that Robert is a diverse artist with an interesting background and a talent for teaching lots of cool stuff. Some of his current classes include 3-D Art, Puppet Craft, Anime and Comics and more. I think instilling an appreciation for art results in better creativity, problem solving and spatial skills. Robert’s a good choice. Robert: I grew up in Wildwood, but left as soon as I graduated. I went to Florida – Miami and Fort Lauderdale – and was there about 15 years. Then I spent a lot of years on the road until I returned to Cape May County and settled down with (my daughter) Sarah. OC mag: Woah, okay that’s a lot in one paragraph. So let’s get this whole story then. What did you do in Florida? Robert: I was a chef. OC mag: Seriously? Robert: Yes. I started in a restaurant when I was 13 and had a good opportunity working with the owner, John Klug at Pompeo’s on the Boardwalk. I had learned everything by the time I was 18 so when I got to Florida I took a few classes and got a good job in a hotel. I was good at it and it was good money but I didn’t like it. I had 40 or 50 people on my staff. I did a lot of administrator work – meet with the bride and groom here, make sure the cheese tray got there, check on the 200-seat restaurant that was open 365. So I did that for quite a few years. Short hair. Tie on at meetings. Mr. Corporate, the whole deal! But I got burned out, just couldn’t do it anymore. OC mag: So then what? Robert: I quit the restaurant biz and started a band. OC mag: Oh do continue. Robert: Well I had some money from my chef job so

I was able to take off for a whole year and concentrate on getting a band together, writing songs and forming an act. So the next 15 years I spent on the road as a musician. OC mag: Wow. Robert: Yeah, town to town, the whole thing. Winters in Miami, summers up here. We were hanging in South Beach before it was all refurbished and trendy. There were a lot of us poor artists just hanging out down there, painting and jamming. Painters were painting up the buildings and the rents were cheap and it was pretty cool. And then some multi-national came in, bought up everything and we couldn’t afford to go there anymore. It’s always like that; artists find some place cool and hip and some company comes along and it’s not the same. OC mag: So you just quit the day job and hit the road? Robert: Exactly. I wondered whether I wanted a day job with good money or if I wanted to pursue music before I was too old. So I quit and I practiced five hours a day for a year. I always had a love for art – I considered myself an artist and I didn’t want to just do some job. I found a couple guys and we got pretty good – Philly, New York, Washington, but, you know, one guy leaves, another goes a different way. I got married along the way and my wife got tired of me being on the road so I started teaching more and more. OC mag: So you’re back in Cape May County teaching music and art? Robert: I migrated back up here, got an apartment in Ocean City and in an effort to spend less time on the road I started teaching. And then the band started getting tired of each other, so teaching morphed into a full time thing. OC mag: You have a nice reputation around here. Robert: Yeah, I saw so many teachers boring kids. So I wanted to make sure what I was doing was fun. I read a lot of books on how to put together a good program. So even if a kid doesn’t pick it up right away, it’ll register as fun and maybe they’ll pick it up down the road. It’s gotta be fun. If it’s fun they’ll be ready to learn. I’ve had some great students over the years. One of my students just graduated with a degree in music education and another with a degree in studio engineering. OC mag: And now you’re at the OC Arts Center. Robert: When I first started at the Arts Center there were no kids’ classes. So I put together a package and sold the Arts Center on it. They were skeptical at first but there was a demand. It went from one class a week to four or five different classes a week. That’s my story. If you’re interested in introducing your kids to art and/or music, give Robert a call at 609-781-7225. He teaches all kinds of classes and as he said, he tries to make it fun.

TRENDS TA-DAH
W
ITH FIVE successful stores along Asbury Avenue, Ta-Dah must be doing something right. So in order to stay in step with the trends we checked with owners Deborah Guerriero and her daughter Danielle and store manager Loreyanne Sepulveda. They’ve been in the clothing biz almost 25 years and their knack for offering the right stuff has earned them a loyal following. We sat down with this fun crew over coffee to see how they built their OC empire and to see what’s hot this summer… OC mag: You guys have been in Ocean City a long time. Deborah: We opened in 1991. This is all Danielle has ever known – clothing. Danielle: I grew up in glitter (laughs). Deborah: Before (opening a store) I used to hand make clothing. I painted T-shirts and a friend said to me “let’s open a store together. We’ll split the time.” She has since left but that’s how it all began – that was the first Ta-Dah. OC mag: So why is it called Ta-Dah? Danielle: Back then everything was handmade so when we were done it was like, Ta dah! OC mag: And all the stores are different, correct? Deborah: Correct. 925 Asbury is our junior market, then we have one with beach bags, jewelry and cover ups. One is more mature, another is summer all year long and the last one is contemporary. Lorey runs all of them. Loreyanne: I try! OC mag: How do you select the clothing and accessories for your shops? Deborah: Ocean City has a certain clientele and we try and cater to that clientele. OC mag: Okay so let’s get to the meat of it… what are the trends for the summer? Danielle: I’m obsessed with tassels. Deborah: Tassels and pom poms are in. The
Danielle, Loreyanne and Deborah stand inside the bright, colorful junior focused Ta-Dah at 925 Asbury
colors seem to be yellow and floral prints. Not all women like floral so we’re also looking at pastel colors with a smaller pattern. OC mag: So where are you seeing the tassels? Deborah: On the jewelry. It’s on the bottom of shorts and shirts too. Danielle: And anything with crochet or lace is still popular. OC mag: And where are you going that you’re seeing this? Deborah: We go all over – East Coast West Coast, you name it. We try to cover current trends but we think you’ll find something for anybody at one of our stores. OC mag: So is there room for another store? Deborah: I don’t think so. But we’re fully invested in Ocean City and we really want to see the Downtown grow. We’re seeing some new businesses and that’s great. Any competition is good competition. Whatever brings people here. OC mag: So why should I shop Ta-Dah? Danielle: Our store is very friendly. Our staff is very approachable. We have a liberal return policy. And we’re all in. We’re open. And it’s one stop shopping. We have it all – the top, the jacket, the shoes, everything. And we coordinate our clothes and our colors, so you’re able to see what matches. OC mag: What else are you seeing this season? Danielle: Jumpers are very trendy!
Ta-Dah has five shops in Ocean City’s Downtown. Each shop has a different focus: ideal for finding something for you or a gift for friends or family. 42 OCEAN CITY MAGAZINE

The Sneaker Shop
Always Ask the Experts is a motto that really should be followed consistently, even when it comes to buying a pair of sneakers. At The Sneaker Shop on Asbury Avenue in Ocean City, expert opinion is exactly what youll find. By Victoria Cleveland. Photograph by Violet Brown.
J
ANET SCHLITZ AND MAUREEN KELLY, owners of The Sneaker Shop, are seasoned runners, making them experts in fitting other people for exactly the type of shoe they need. Janet and Maureen were already long time friends when they had initially decided to start up a business together. “We had known each other for six years before buying the store. I wanted to change my career and she did too, so it just kind of worked out,” Janet explains. After the two had no luck attempting to open a sneaker store in Philadelphia, Maureen sought advice from her friend, Celeste Bittner, who had owned The Sneaker Shop in Ocean City at the time. As luck would have it, “The timing was perfect, Celeste was just getting ready to put in the newspaper that she was going to sell the business,” Maureen stated. “And we were lucky that we had a business plan and we had our financing all worked out. There were other people that wanted the business, but we were a little bit ahead of the game and she wanted to give it to someone who would hang around for a while.” So, in September of 2002, Maureen and Janet bought and transformed The Sneaker Shop into what it is today. “We really kind of changed the focus,” Maureen explained, saying that previously the store sold some running shoes and some casual shoes. “We kind of got into the niche of the running, and I think our timing was pretty
good. And Ocean City is a great place to run, with the boardwalk and the bridge,” she continued, highlighting two of the most popular running spots in the area. When Janet and Maureen first took over The Sneaker Shop, it was located at 846 Asbury Avenue. When Hurricane Sandy hit, the store flooded. The Sneaker Shop suffered some loss of merchandise as well damage to the property. Shortly after, however, it was all fixed and back in business. Last year, The Sneaker Shop changed locations: they moved to 704 Asbury Avenue, which is where the old Cricket Box used to be located. After Hurricane Sandy, the Cricket Box was also damaged, so the place was renovated and split into two. That being the case, last July, Maureen and Janet took advantage of this newly renovated space, and this is where they are currently located. “We are open year round, seven days a week,” says Janet, “Customer service is what we do best.” This is clearly stated by their hours of accessibility, and the raving reviews people have given the store. The Sneaker Shop carries brands such as Asics, Brooks, Saucony, Mizuna, and many more. Janet and Maureen make sure to fit their customers each individually, catering to whatever their running or walking needs may be. As Janet puts it, “There’s so much competition nowadays, you can buy online or wherever, but it’s all about customer service in the end and that’s why we’re still here.” Janet and Maureen each run on the Boardwalk three to four times a week. “The Boardwalk is my favorite place to run,” Maureen noted. She and Janet can be seen in their favorite Brooks sneakers. The two have also participated in a handful of runs each year, and Maureen just ran the Broad Street Run in Philadelphia. Considering all of the experience the two friends have with running, it is no surprise that they know exactly how to fit someone with the perfect shoe for summer of running, whether it be Downtown or on the Boardwalk. Maureen and Janet put a strong emphasis on how grateful they are for such enthusiastic support from the community. September will mark the store’s 12th year open. “It’s funny, you meet kids when they first start running at the intermediate school, and next thing you know, they come in and they are graduating college. That’s kind of fun.”

ACTIVITY OF THE MONTH June’s movie , “Extremely Lo ud and Incredibly Close” will be screened on June 9!
TUESDAY MOVIE NIGHTS Join artist Happy Gandolfi for this monthly event Text by Victoria Cleveland and Stefanie Godfrey
“I took painting classes,” recalls Happy Gandolfi, recounting how her
volunteer work with the Fine Arts League in Ocean City began. Happy began taking painting classes with Wanda Klein about ten years ago. “I retired and was looking for some place to volunteer. When I first started taking painting classes with Wanda, she was the president of the Arts League. I started volunteering on Saturday mornings, and I did that for maybe a year and a half, and then they asked me to sit on the board.” Just like that, Happy embarked on a journey of art and community service that would change how she saw the community of Ocean City. When Happy first started volunteering for the Arts League, they had a small program where they would show films. “Wanda asked me if I would take it over and I said yes,” she explained. After making arrangements with the Ocean City Public Library, the Arts League soon had a permanent place to show their movies on a weekly basis. Happy has been hosting the Tuesday Movie Nights for nearly four years now. Once a month on the first Tuesday, the movies are shown at the Library in the
theater room, free for anyone who would like to come. “I show films connected to some kind of art like music or dance or the fine arts. I also show movies based on novels.” Happy enjoys using the space in the library because it has a large screen and blackout blinds, to truly simulate the classic move theater experience. The movies are chosen six months in advance, and potential viewers can see the schedule at the Library at any time. Though the second half of the year hasn’t been finalized, in June the movie will be “Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close,” based on the novel by Jonathon Safran Foer. “It’s different and interesting. I read the book and I liked it,” said Happy, noting also that the June movie will be held on the second Tuesday of the month, due to election day. The movie night begins at 6:30pm with a lengthy introduction given by Happy. Since the Library closes close to the time the movie ends, there isn’t time for questions after, but Happy takes any questions before the screening begins. Tuesday Night Movies have attracted a pretty large crowd in the summer months. One month Happy had about 55 people
join in the evening fun. Though not everyone is always a fan of the movie choice. “I showed a movie called ‘Art School Confidential.’ It was very different and I think some people thought it was weird,” said Happy. “Because I’m not limiting myself to just movies about fine art, I’m able to show movies that are a little different but that people can get value from.” Happy believes movies can change your point of view and give you hours of enjoyment. “They show different parts of culture and different parts of life,” she said. Happy tries to arrive at the Library at 6pm to set up and be there to greet her guests. Attendees can simply walk in the back entrance and straight into the theater room. Back in May, the movie choice was “The Monuments Men.” She researches her introduction via various sites on the internet, such as Rotten Tomatoes or the movie’s website. If you’re a movie buff or are looking for a fun mid-week experience, head to the library and perhaps you’ll leave with a different point of view.

Take Heart Ocean City’s NPN Surf Club teams up with the Heart of Surfing organization to bring the first annual Heart of Surfing Competition for special needs children to the island. by Victoria Cleveland Photos by Heart of Surfing

S
EASONED SURFERS aren’t the only ones who will be hitting the waves this summer: Ocean City’s surf club, No Passport Needed (NPN) has teamed up with the Heart of Surfing organization to create a surf a competition that not only welcomes special needs children, but is centered around them. On June 7, surfers in NPN Surf Club will host the first ever Heart of Surfing Competition. All of the special needs children who are participating in the competition are members of the Heart of Surfing organization, which is a group that provides surfing and skateboarding opportunities to children with autism and their siblings. Heart of Surfing offers free surfing sessions during the summer at Newport Beach in Ventnor, and free skateboarding sessions pre- and post- surfing season at Brigantine Skate Park. They try to get the entire family involved in these activities, as Cindy Fertsch, coordinator of Heart of Surfing events, explains. “We decided we would offer the skateboarding and surfing to the siblings as well as their child with autism. They often are kind of given the back seat because a child with autism has so many needs, so we felt it was important to give them a fun opportunity too.” Cindy and her husband Bob Fertsch have a 20-year-old autistic son, who was their inspiration for starting Heart of Surfing. “We were looking for an opportunity to give back and to work with kids with autism because that’s our passion, that’s our heart,” Cindy explains. Seeing as her husband is an avid skater/surfer, and her son has always enjoyed it too, the couple had the idea of giving other autistic children the opportunity to enjoy it as well. In June of 2014, Bob Fertsch called up Vinny Lorenzi, another avid skater/ surfer who also has a son with autism, and together they decided to make the activities they both love so much more accessible to kids with autism. Vinny and Bob are always on the front-end of things, helping the children learn to skate and surf. Cindy, as she puts it, is more of a “behind the scenes coordinator,” ensuring the children and their families have everything they need for their skating and surfing ventures. Although the organization is less than a year old, it has been extremely successful. Cindy said the organization has an average of 40 families with autistic children who come out on Saturdays to participate. “It has grown so rapidly, it’s amazing. I think it’s because the community has kind of wrapped its arms around us and supported us so much. We have 52 OCEAN CITY MAGAZINE
JUNE 2015
been really blessed by that. Our motto has been ‘Heart of Surfing runs on love’,” she said. The volunteers who help out every Saturday with Heart of Surfing come mostly from the local surfing and skating community. Everyone seems to leave feeling happier than when they arrived, most likely because they put a smile on the face of a special needs child. Heart of Surfing is extremely grateful to everyone who donates their time. “The volunteers are the heartbeat of Heart of Surfing. Without the volunteers, we would be nothing. Almost every volunteer that leaves, as I am thanking them, they are thanking me more because they have just experienced the pleasure of making a kid’s day and they are just totally excited by that. It’s such a great feeling,” said Cindy. Heart of Surfing recruits volunteers and matches them up with special needs kids, making it an even more personalized experience. They always take a lot of safety precautions, ensuring that the children wear helmets, life vests, and other mediums of protection that are appropriate for the activity they are participating in that day. When in the water, the children are always three to one as far as instructor and volunteer supervision. Cindy works on getting permits for the beach and skate park, as well as recruiting volunteers and matching them up with the kids and their families. Last September, Heart of Surfing had the honor of being featured on the Dr. Oz show. On the show, Bob Fertsch and Vinny Lorenzi were surprised and honored as hometown heroes, and awarded five very large paddleboards as well as $5,000 for the organization. This contribution helped Heart of Surfing tremendously, in the past
they had to rely on families to provide their own boards and safety equipment. With this new donation, they were able to purchase wetsuits, rash guards, larger sized life vests for some of the older participants, and much more. Thanks to the donation from the Dr. Oz show, Heart of Surfing was also able to accommodate different needs of the autistic children, by purchasing more Razor scooters because many of the autistic children prefer using something with a handle at the skate park. Heart of Surfing relies on donations and the goodness of its volunteers to keep going. At the end of each six week session, whether it be skating or surfboarding, Heart of Surfing awards the children with trophies, which are also acquired through the generosity of some of the families who participate. Besides the donation Heart of Surfing received from the Dr. Oz show, they have also gained recognition which has allowed the group to gain even further support, even though they are still relatively new. However, this was not how they first got in touch with NPN. “They got on our radar when we saw them stand up and introduce themselves at one of the meetings about the skate park in Ocean City,” explained Dennis Siteman, head of NPN Surf Club and coordinator of the Heart of Surfing Competition. Dennis’ reaction after first learning about Heart of Surfing was, “These guys are pretty interesting, I didn’t even know they did stuff like that.” This is what inspired NPN to collaborate with Heart of Surfing and start the first ever Heart of Surfing Competition. Dennis expects a good turnout for the competition, as everyone from NPN will be participating.
Kids who are a part of Heart of Surfing will be side-by-side with pro surfers and volunteers on competition day, all working together to ensure a fun experience for the kids. The entry fee for the competition is $20, and Dennis made a point of saying, “Proceeds are going directly to Heart of Surfing.” Not only is Heart of Surfing excited for the awesome time their kids will have participating, but they are also grateful for the funds they will receive, which will allow them to purchase more materials for the kids. “We are excited on multiple levels: we are excited that our kids are surfing in it, we are excited that so many people are coming together to support us, and we are excited about the funding and what that can mean to our surfers and skaters,” said Cindy. Heart of Surfing and NPN are both very excited to hold the first ever Heart of Surfing Competition. The work they are doing for special needs children puts a smile on the face of everyone who helps out. Heart of Surfing is currently seeking volunteers, and in their search, they truly emphasize how rewarding of an experience it is. “Our whole mission is to create a positive fun experience for the kids and their families,” said Cindy. “Autism can be really heavy and serious and involve a lot of therapy and a lot of very serious topics, and this is just a positive encouraging recreational opportunity for them.” For more information, visit www. facebook.com/heartofsurfing. 53
Stocked Market
With farmers markets in Ocean City and now Upper Township, our area is bursting with fresh local fare ripe for the picking (up). By Bill Godfrey. Photos by Oceanbleu Photography.
Q
UICK, NAME the top reason local farmers markets are your best source for produce. I’ll play the Jeopardy theme while you think. Dah dah dah dah dah dah. My top reason is taste. Have you ever noticed your store-bought fruit just doesn’t pack the same taste as it did when you were a kid? I have. But produce from a farmers market is the freshest of the fresh and it ripened in the field - no long distance shipping or chemical treatments. It’s straight out of the ground to the farmers market that popped up in a formerly-idle field in your neighborhood. Winner. Nobody grows it like Jersey, especially southern Jersey. Here in America’s most densely populated state, Cape May County had set asides vast tracts of land for dedicated open space and farmland. And Upper Township is bringing together that farmland and open space for a great reason – the Upper Township Farmers Market. “We’re going to have a lot of summer vegetables,” said Frank Ferrucci, owner of Summer Winds Farm in Franklin Township near Vineland. “We’ll have kale, swiss chard, sweet corn, squash – all kinds of squash – tomatoes, eggplant, peppers, cucumbers – lots of summer stuff.” I still remember one of the highlights of my trips to the Shore were the stops at roadside stands where my parents would grab Jersey Fresh tomatoes, blueberries, peaches and all kinds of stuff. I can remember those oh-so-sweet peaches as if it were yesterday. Now those roadside stands have matured into full-blown farmers markets. Upper Township recently joined a growing list of local municipalities, including Ocean City, hosting a summertime farmers market. Organizers announced Friday markets at Past Time Place Field in Seaville beginning June 26. I’m gonna get me some peaches.

“Upper Township really doesn’t have a center of town so we thought this would be awesome,” said Kiesha Bond, who, along with Becky Holden, Ralph Cooper, and other members of the Upper Township Green Team helped pull it all together. “Everybody likes to get together over food, so this was a natural fit,” she added. There’s been a huge shift in recent years away from the damaging practices of industrial agriculture to more local sources. Soil degradation, climate change, chemical seep and water shortages, not to mention a growing demand for betterquality food, has turned peoples’ eyes away from far-off farm factories toward their own neighborhoods and smaller farm operations. “For our market, you have to grow it, you have to have your hands on it. There’s no reselling,” said Kiesha. “This is healthy food, much of it organic. Well, they’ll be some pastries there. That’s not as healthy as vegetables but at least it’s locally made, not filled with preservatives.” Local farmers markets are a big link in the sustainable agriculture, open space dynamic. Past Time Place (you know the place, just north of Route 50 where the circus is held. Some folks call it Ulmer’s Field.), sits idle most of the time so using it for a community event benefits the whole town. “It’s always a good thing to get together over food,” said Kiesha. “This will really bring people together and there will be a lot of locally grown food here. We’d like to start with Upper Township farmers and then extend it to other Jersey farmers. It’s awesome because we give local farmers and artists a chance to sell their product.” Need another reason to visit the farmers market? How about money. Strong neighbors keeps the price of your own home secure, so come to the farmers market and support your neighbors. Strong neighbors build strong communities and strong communities keep real estate prices
stable. So go buy some blueberries and make sure the price of your home stays even. “We really think this will increase business traffic in town,” said Kiesha. “And
it’s a great way to meet and support your neighbors. We’ll have vendors too, but it’s definitely not a flea market. It’s a great thing for Upper Township where we can foster an appreciation for local agriculture, arts and culture.” Connecting with your community; another reason to like the farmers market. What’s not to like here? Did I mention much of the food is organic? Truly organic. Certified organic. “I’m a fourth generation farmer,” said Frank. “Basically it’s in my blood. We’re
summer

certified organic under USDA standards. It’s not just that we use organic practices, we’re actually certified. Organic farming’s not easy but we found a demand for local organic produce and I thought it made sense for us. We have land here that hasn’t had any chemicals on it for at least seven years. USDA guidelines require only three years of no chemicals.” The Ocean City Farmers Market has been going strong for nearly two decades now. This year it starts June 24 and is held at the Ocean City Tabernacle grounds at 6th and Wesley on Wednesday mornings in summer from 8am to 1pm. One of my favorite vendors at the OC market is Big Bad Dad’s Homemade Jams and Jellies. They always have a booth in OC and are scheduled to be in UT this year as well. They make a fantastic product that I use and often give as gifts. They’re exactly the reason you should be in attendance at these events. “Whenever possible we get our ingredients from local farms,” said Jennifer Freeman who along with her husband Danny and two children Oona and Aoife hand-makes small batches of jams and jellies. “The blueberries are always Jersey produce – we usually get them from Atlantic Blueberry Company and Pastori Farms. The peaches we get from a couple local farms. We want to support the local economy and local farmers because like us, they’re small family businesses and it’s better quality produce.” And farmers markets are simply fun. It’s warm, people are walking around – it doesn’t get any better. Plus there’s food. “There are great people at the OC Farmers Market,” said Jennifer. “The customers, the vendors and the Ocean City Chamber – all around it’s just a pleasant atmosphere. Being able to be outside with our family, teaching our children about economics, how a business works – it’s such a bonus.” And finally a simple list of great reasons to visit the UT and OC farmers markets, starting with, you should know where your food comes from (come meet the people growing your food!). Next, you can buy produce and proteins that aren’t contaminated with pesticides or hormones. You can find stuff you don’t normally find, like quail eggs or purple cauliflower, and finally you can enjoy summer’s breezes, have fun and eat great. And perhaps your kids will remember these great memories years from now and write about them.
Clockwise from top: Frank at Summer Wind Farm, Andy’s Countryside Farm showing off their gorgeous flowers, Upper Sandwiches will be a vendor at the Upper Township Farmers Market. 55

BOOK OF THE MONTH All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr
Marie-Laure LeBlanc lives in Paris with her father, Daniel, who works at the Museum of Natural History. At age six, Marie-Laure goes blind. At twelve, Marie-Laure and her father are forced to flee the country due to Nazi occupation of Paris. Staying with relatives, they hide a precious jewel which Daniel was given from the museum in Paris, said to have powers of protection. Meanwhile, Werner Pfennig, an orphan who grew up in Germany, loves listening to a particular radio show hosted by a French man. Werner has a special knack for manipulating radio signals, which the Nazis utilize to intercept radio messages. Werner hates the harm he is doing, but is forced to continue. Daniel is eventually sent to a camp, but the stone remains in Marie-Laure’s possession. When the Nazis come to her home looking for it, she hides in a closet trying to use a radio to signal for help. Werner hears her radio signals, and rescues Marie-Laure after learning it was her uncle’s radio show that inspired his love for radio in the first place. - Victoria Cleveland

Health & Beauty by the sea
Treat Yourself
On vacation, during the work week, after school – anytime is the right time to get pampered and relax. We visited Divine Images Salon and Day Spa this month and did indeed feel divine afterward. By Stefanie Godfrey
E
VER WONDER why women throughout history looked a little sad, and perhaps a wee bit angry? Perhaps it’s because their beauty regimes included vampires, lead, and leeches. What were they thinking?! Thankfully today, we have lovely beauty regimes that don’t involve mythical creatures, poison or scary bugs. All they involve is rest, relaxation and detoxifying ingredients. When you’re on vacation (and when you’re not) a trip to the spa is a gift that should be given. In this column we’re treating ourselves in hopes that you’ll treat yourself… or “Treat. Yo. Self.” if you’re a Parks and Recreation fan. Massage? Treat yo self. Facials? Treat yo self. And that’s exactly what we did when my friend and I walked into Divine Images Salon and Spa at the Flanders Hotel on a midweek night. We were taken directly to the quiet room to begin relaxing and meet our therapists Lisa and Deanna. “I really believe that yoga, massage, proper diet, treating yourself, relaxing, and deep breathing are keys to help relieve a lot
of illness,” said Lisa DeRose, a certified massage therapist and yoga instructor. Lisa has been in the massage field for nearly two decades and put us at ease immediately with her friendly smile and calm voice. She took the time to listen to any issues we had and worked on them during the massage. The experience was a deeper connection than other massages; like this wasn’t just a job for her, but truly a passion. And it’s not your everyday massage. “I customize the massage to your body. I work with hot towels, hot packs. I’m a yoga instructor, part of what I offer is a partial stretching. I work with hot stones and cold stones. People with migraines and sinus issues – cold stones really help with that,” said Lisa. And she’s right. The relief was
instant when the cold stone was placed on the spot on my forehead between my eyes. After the body massage, it was my face’s time to be pampered. I’ve known esthetician Deanna Curran for years. She’s always smiling and always friendly. “I’ve been an esthetician for 16 years. Right before I got married I went to school and have been doing it since. Before that I was a dental assistant. Every time I saw someone, they were in the worst place. I felt bad. I always loved makeup and that field; now I’m in a place where people can’t wait to get here and they don’t want to leave. It’s therapeutic for everyone. The whole experience is wonderful,” said Deanna. My facial began with a light cleansing. Afterwards Deanna placed an algae deep pore cleanser on to exfoliate and dissolve any oils. My favorite part of any massage or beauty treatment is the hot towel. Each time Deanna removed a mask, she did so with a steam towel. She also analyzed my skin checking for signs of clogged pores, moles, or blackheads that need to be extracted. Then came the fun part Deanna began my facial massage with a nice oil to stimulate the muscles and help drain the lactic acid (the stuff that builds up and eventually clogs pores). It was relaxing, fun, and my skin glowed afterward. “It’s proven that facials do help rejuvenate your skin and keep you look younger,” said Deanna. “We feed our bodies but sometimes we forget about the skin. It’s important to feed your skin vitamins and minerals it needs as well. The whole point is to take time for yourself. I can help you get into that state of mind where you feel beautiful.”
>>>> Clockwise from top left: Divine Images esthetician Deanna Curran applies a cleanser during a facial. The soothing mask with vitamin C. The massage room.

Tips for Safe Summer Fun
from AtlantiCare Urgent Care Centers Warm weather and sunny skies are great motivators to get outside and enjoy fun summer activities with friends and family. But make sure that you take adequate precautions to protect yourself from the common hazards of summer living that can spoil your outdoor fun.
In the Sun Use sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher with UVA and UVB protection, even if it’s overcast outside. Reapply sunscreen every two hours and after sweating or swimming. Avoid direct sun exposure between 10am and 2pm, when skin-damaging rays are strongest. Drink plenty of water, especially if you’re in the heat for long periods.
In the Heat In excessive heat, limit time outdoors. Try to stay indoors in air conditioning. Check on elderly neighbors and relatives who live alone. Wear light-colored and lightweight clothing on hot days to help keep your body cool. Keep your vehicle locked so it does not become a temptation for a child to play inside, exposing him or her to entrapment/heat exposure.
On the Water Only swim in lifeguard-protected waters. Teach children to follow lifeguards’ directions. Use the “buddy” system when swimming in pools or the ocean. Refrain from swimming alone. Do not dive into shallow water.

Good Karma
Walk for a Cure By Stefanie Godfrey
E
VERY DAY 40 children are diagnosed with Type One diabetes in the United States. On December 22, 2013, my son Salem was one of those 40. He had just celebrated his seventh birthday two days prior and we thought he was suffering from a bad virus when he couldn’t get off the couch to sing happy birthday around the table. We thought virus even when my husband took him to urgent care and the doctor suggested we go to the ER after he found sugar in Salem’s system. The emergency room doctor got on the phone with me as I was baking cookies for a Christmas cookie swap and said Salem needed to be taken by ambulance from Shore Medical Center to a hospital more equipped to handle his situation. “His pancreas is burned out,” he said. “He will be insulin-dependent the rest of his life.” And with that one sentence, our lives were forever altered. We were panicked, struggling to understand teams of doctors and searching for some normalcy in a confusing time. That’s when we discovered the non-profit charitable organization JDRF. And today, thankfully, we are fortunate enough to have a thriving healthy eight year old home with us who laughs, yells, and plays each day. JDRF introduced us to other families living with Type One diabetes and provided us with information and comfort. “JDRF is the world’s largest funder of research into a cure for Type One diabetes,” said Renee Sonsini-Bersani, senior development manager for the South Jersey Chapter. “Our goal is to better treat, prevent and eventually cure diabetes. The organization was started as Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation in the 1970 by a group of parents that wanted to raise money to fund research. Now we’re known as JDRF because we cover all ages and stages of the disease.” Though our circumstances were unique to us, our story is not uncommon. And like all Type One parents, we want to find a cure for all the children and adults
living with this disease every day. And so we walk. On June 6 JDRF South Jersey Chapter is having its annual Walk to Cure Diabetes on the Wildwood boardwalk. The nearly three mile walk is a major fundraiser for the chapter. The Wildwood walk is in its third year with a goal of raising $175,000. Over 80 percent of the monies raised by JDRF go toward research and research related education. A statistic that gave the JDRF an “all-star charity” rating by Forbes Magazine. “The South Jersey Chapter raises a little over $2 million every year,” said Renee. The funds are raised with the walk events (in addition to the June Wildwood Walk, there’s a walk in Camden in the fall), an annual gala, a golf outing, a ride to cure diabetes, as well as through sponsors like Wawa, Marshalls and Advance Auto Parts, and a kids walk program. “The Kids Walk Program is where we go into schools and have an education assembly with a fundraising component. The assembly introduces diabetes and the difference between Type One and Type Two,” explained Renee. We were first introduced to the JDRF when we requested their Bag of Hope – a bag filled with educational books, Rufus, the teddy bear with Type One and other comforting items designed for new families who could use some support. Ours was brought to us by Gisele, who came over and told us her son was living with Type One and is okay. For the first time in a while, we felt like we might be okay too. To participate in the JDRF Walk to Cure Diabetes, please visit www.walk.jdrf.org/ wildwood or contact Renee directly at rbersani@jdrf.org to sign up to have a Kids Walk at your school or donate.
