FAROUCHE TREMBLANT (01)

project completed while at Atelier L’Abri

type: hospitality - agrotourism

location: Lac-Supérieur, QC, CA

year: 2022

photos: Raphael Thibodeau

Farouche is an agritourism project that offers a unique concept in the Laurentian region in Quebec.

The project consists of several buildings that blend seamlessly into their environment, including a Nordic farm, a cafe-bar, fourseason A-frame cabins, and an outdoor activity base. Inspired by vernacular farm buildings, the cafe is at the heart of the project and the activities offered on site. Inside, there’s a small market and shop, where seasonal fresh produce grown on site are available as well as other goods such as cheeses, craft beers and wines from local producers.

My role on the project was project manager, and also more specifically I took part in the design process of the cafe building working closely with the clients.

The project was on fast track so all decisions needed to be taken quickly and coordinated with the builder. For that matter, we were always quickly trying layout options, materials and integrating products in the 3D model.

CLIENT PRESENTATION EXTRACTS

Client presentations with visual material were key in decision taking for the clients.

For example, we tried a lot of different positions ans models for the fireplace which was an important and focal element in the café lounge.

MAISON SUR LA DUNE

project completed while at Atelier L’Abri

type: residential location: Magdalen Islands, QC, CA

year: 2024

The house on the Dune is a family residence built on a plateau in havre-Aubert, in the Magdalen Islands. The construction prioritizes a compact plan and reduced foundations to minimize the building’s carbon footprint. The project’s name refers to the dunes visible from the house, facing the sea. The small structure extends onto a slope, set back from the beach and these sensitive areas.

Sober and minimalist, the building’s architecture draws inspiration from local vernacular with its cedar shingle cladding, which wraps around a simple form. Exposed to winds and salt air, the wood will quickly take on the weathered gray tone of the old houses in La Grave.

Inside, the living spaces are oriented toward the horizon, fully opening to the panoramic view. The design allows for sunrise views from the kitchen and sunset views from the dining room, living room, and terrace. A mezzanine houses the office space and the master bedroom. Set within its arid landscape, the house gently settles into its surroundings, highlighting the beauty of the Atlantic.

The interior material palette is designed to be calm and soothing, evoking the colors and textures of the natural surroundings in which the house is set - such as the pebbles and sand of the beach or the pearly sheen of seashells.

VILLA DES 4 VENTS

project completed while at Atelier L’Abri

type: residential

location: Bolton-Ouest, QC, CA

year: 2023

This private residence is nestled atop a small mountain in Quebec’s Eastern Townships. The client, a businessman and one of the estate’s developers, wanted a home that blended seamlessly with its elevated surroundings.

Perched at such a height, the site experiences its own microclimate, amplifying the already intense winter conditions. To ensure comfort in Quebec’s harsh winters, the house was designed with a highperformance double-frame building shell and insulation values exceeding local standards.

One of the client’s initial requests was for a unique and unconventional residence. Conceptually, the project is defined by the absence of right angles, both in the overall floor plan and in the volumetry of the roof, which is sloped on all planes.

The house was designed with large openings on the south and west facades to capture the stunning views of the surrounding forest and the distant Lake Brome.

Fiberglass insulation: Used for the sloped ceiling where cellulose wasn’t feasible.

Cellulose insulation: Blown into the roof and walls for its high R-value and low carbon footprint.

Each thrust has an unique shape, hence the project required a very thorough coordination with the structural engeneering team and with the building team to put togheter this real life puzzle.

CONSTRUCTION

A lot of on-site visits were done to supervise construction and to duscuss how to do certain details with the construction team directly on-site.

Visits were also done with the clients to discuss the design.

INTERIOR DESIGN

In contrast to the black exterior, the interior is bright and airy, with a carefully curated palette of warm and natural materials. Terracotta tiles on the fireplace and entrance floor, along with white oak built-in furniture and flooring, bring warmth and texture to the space.

The flooring in the kitchen and dining area is concrete, chosen for both its functionality and its ability to enhance the minimalist aesthetic with a seamless, uninterrupted surface.

The kitchen furniture and handrail blend subtly with the walls, finished in a warm off-white tone to maintain a cohesive and understated atmosphere.

CUSTOM BUILT IN FURNITURE

The design of the built-in furniture was an integral part of my work on the interior design, evolving through every stage of the project.

From the initial conceptual 3D visualizations to the final detailed 2D technical drawings, the design underwent continuous refinement. This iterative process was driven by the client’s evolving vision and was carefully coordinated with the cabinetmakers to ensure precision and feasibility.

Collaboration played a key role in this project. Every detail—from material selection to hardware, handles, and interior organization— was meticulously considered and thoughtfully chosen in partnership with the cabinetmakers, resulting in a seamless integration of functionality and aesthetics.

ARRIBANA

type: tourism - residential

location: Achadinha, Sao Miguel Island, Azores

year: 2024

This project was a work exchange in which I lived with the clients in a small village on São Miguel Island, Azores. A local architect had previously developed basic 2D layout plans for the interior. Building on these, I created a 3D model to explore different layouts and material selections, refining the design and pushing it further.

The project involves converting an old stone barn into a multifunctional space: a farm shop, an industrial kitchen for food workshops using products from the owners’ dairy farm, and a rental studio for tourists—integrated into a holistic retreat experience aligned with the client’s work as a couple therapist and her practice with women. The second floor is dedicated to their private living space.

Given my limited five-week stay, working part-time, we prioritized key elements. The ground-floor studio was a primary focus, along with developing exterior layouts and visualizations necessary for construction and tourism permits. In their private quarters, we dedicated time to designing the kitchen, ensuring it aligned with their vision, and refining the master suite layout (bedroom, bathroom, and walk-in closet) to finalize plans for permit approval.
