Steel doors: a guide Most steel doors are found in commercial buildings. However, they are much less common in residential properties. Fiberglass and wood are preferred materials for residential doors. Steel doors are still possible and offer many benefits. What's a Steel Door? A steel door is not solid steel. Steel doors are composed of a core made up of either polyurethane or polystyrene, or both, and a steel skin. A solid steel door will weigh more than 100 pounds and most likely crack the hinges. Steel is available in 16-24 gauges for the door's skin. The perimeter is surrounded by a wooden frame also known as a stile. The edges of the door are clear of any polyurethane/polystyrene. Steel and other metals can transfer heat and cold with remarkable efficiency, regardless of their weight. The door should not conduct heat. The core of the polyurethane/polystyrene polyurethane acts as a thermal shield. These synthetic materials block heat and cold better than timber doors, according to some studies.
