Monday All students in Elements, Rudiments, Poetry and Rhetoric can choose from the following activities.

Some are only open to some years and some are pre-selected groups (such as sports teams).

Grammar and Syntax students have a lesson during P7 on a Monday.

Recycled Fashion – Mrs Applegate and Mrs Adkins Create your own clothes while saving the environment. We are planning to create catwalk clothing from recycled materials, and we will aim to run a catwalk show towards the end of term/year.

You can be a designer, creator, and model.

Elastic Band (Junior Orchestra) – Mrs Colligan A fun ensemble for any instrumentalists Grades 1 – 3 wanting to play as part of a group.

Junior Drama – Mrs Wylie and Mrs Collins Join Mrs Wylie and other year groups in Bounds working together on an exciting opportunity to develop new friends and explore a range of different styles of performances. You will eventually work towards the new Bounds production for the Trinity Term 2022. It is expected that you will sign up for both Monday and Friday p7 sessions.

Castle Comedy Production – Ms McCann The play is set in a Castle in 1927. The action takes place over the course of a hectic weekend in which a beloved pig goes missing, an ancient treasure is accidentally stolen and star-crossed lovers face warring families, abandonment and financial obstacles. Be prepared for a wonderful, comic adventure in a place full of the oddest and most eccentric characters imaginable.

Open to: Rhetoricians who are willing to learn lines and participate in an extended rehearsal each Monday. Please note, reherasals will continue until 6.30pm.

Arkwright – Dr Eves You will spend the Period 7 working on a project to submit as part of the application. Applications are submitted in January with successful candidates called for interview in March. The Arkwright Scholarship is extremely prestigious and would bolster an application to any top university.

Book Club – Mrs O’Neill and Mrs Tyne A club for all book lovers. Read together, share reviews and enjoy books.

Missing Maps – Mr Webb Learn how to map our world using Geographical Information Systems (GIS) and work with humanitarian organisations to map remote areas of the planet. This will help distribute and co-ordinate development and emergency aid for organisations working in these areas.

Student Newspaper – Mr Woodward The St. Edmund’s student newspaper has sadly fallen out of publication in recent years, so come along and be a part of the team who will relaunch it! This is the perfect activity for any aspiring journalists, or keen writers, who would like to report on life in Edmundia from a student’s perspective.

We will also need anybody with an interest in photography, graphic design and desktop publishing.

Criminology and Law – Mr Snell We will explore the potential causes of crime and strategies for reducing it using theories and research from biologists, psychologists and sociologists. A chance to study fascinating case studies and explore the legal implications of criminal activity. This activity is for students interested in studying Psychology, Sociology and Law. Africa Club – Mr Mandizha Despite what is often said and written about Africa, this beautiful continent has an amazing culture, history and future. Come and learn more, you will soon realise that Africa is rich in so many aspects; its not war and poverty all the time.

Boxing – Mr Davidson Learn how to box! You will learn glovework and there is no contact! You must have your own gloves. These can be provided at cost.

Tuesday Tuesdays are different to other days. Pupils in Elements and Rudiments have a bespoke rotation of activities. While they don’t choose these, it’s a great opportunity to try out and experience new things.

Pupils in Grammar have a choice between the Combined Cadet Force (CCF) and the St Edmund’s Award (SEA).

Pupils in Syntax and above can continue with CCF if they have been part of this in Grammar, or choose from the activities below.

Elements Rotation All pupils in Elements will have half a term of each of these activities.

Rookie Lifeguarding – Mrs Short and Mrs Appleford Learn the key skills in saving lives in the water.

Ukulele – Mrs Colligan and Mr Woodhall Learn to play the chords used in every pop song and even write your own.

First aid – Mr Hounsell Learn the key skills to help if someone is hurt or injured.

Traybake / Ceramics For these activities the group will have an opportunity to enjoy baking as well as making some ceramics.

Grammar

Combined Cadet Force

The CCF provides a superb opportunity for boys and girls to participate in interesting and challenging activities in a disciplined environment.

In Grammar, students will complete a basic military skills course that includes, fieldcraft, first aid, orienteering, shooting, teamwork and leadership. Regular training in P7 is supplemented by weekend training events, annual camps and competitions at regional and Cadet training centres.

Students who successfully complete this initial year have the opportunity to continue with the CCF between the Army and RAF sections and follow a structured training programme as they progress through the College.

Community Theatre Ensemble – Mrs Wylie This brand new group will explore a range of ways of using Drama in the community with the aim of touring a performance in the future. We will welcome not only performers but designers, marketers and administrators.

Combined Cadet Force The CCF provides a superb opportunity for boys and girls to participate in interesting and challenging activities in a disciplined environment. Regular training in Period 7 will be supplemented by field days, weekend training events, competitions and annual camps. Senior cadets also have the opportunity to complete residential adventurous training courses and qualifications run the military including kayaking, climbing, diving and mountain leaders.

Students in Rhetoric will be able to continue to develop their leadership skills, taking charge of their own platoons and planning and instructing a range of lessons for junior cadets.

Students in Poetry who wish to participate on a Tuesday (in addition to their core training on a Thursday) will have the opportunity to shadow senior cadets, develop their instruction skills and prepare for national Army and RAF cadet competitions.

Outdoor fun and adventure. Weekly visits to this family run outdoor activity centre, set in the beautiful Hertfordshire countryside. Activities include, but are not limited to, High Ropes, Archery, Orienteering, Climbing Wall, Aire Rifle Shooting, and Mountain Boarding.

Wednesday All pupils in Rudiments, Grammar and Syntax can choose from the following activities. Elements pupils have a language rotation followed by a Rocket Car project.

Pupils in Poetry and Rhetoric have Senior Games during P7.

Elements Language Rotation – Language Teachers Elements pupils will have five weeks of taster sessions in a variety of languages, learning some key phrases as well as more about the culture and customs of people who are our near neighbours in Europe, or further afield. Some of the languages will be ones that you can opt for next year when you choose your second foreign language.

STEM Challenge and Rocket Cars – Dr Eves and Ms Marrinan Pupils work in teams to complete weekly challenges, culminating in designing and building their own rocket car

Activities for Rudiments, Grammar and Syntax Candle Making – Dr Banahan and Dr Heslin In this activity you make your own scented candles! We usually use jam jars that we decorate for different themes/events such as Christmas, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, Easter and more! You can give your candles as gifts or keep them for yourself.

Drama Designers and Technicians Workshop – Mrs Schiff You will have the opportunity to work as a sound designer, costume and makeup designer, or set designer for the Senior Drama production that will take place this term. You will be able to be part of the team creating the exciting designs and make the props, costumes and hair and makeup designs that will bring the show to life.

Wildlife Appreciation – Dr Czajkowski If you love watching BBC Springwatch then this club is for you. We are surrounded by the beauty of nature and wonderful wildlife across the world, and in this club will learn about everything from local British birds to exotic species in rainforests far away. We may spend some time outdoors.

Corps of Drums – Mr Eliasson Fancy a new instrument or to practice your existing skills? Come along and pick up some drumsticks. As part of the CCF we are launching the Corps of Drums. You do not need to be a member of CCF already nor take it as an activity. You do not need to have any experience of drumming as you will be taught the basics by an expert and assisted by those who can play.

Open to: Grammar to Rhetoric Astronomy – Mr Webster Look into space – find out about starts, galaxies and constellations, whilst studying for GCSE in Astronomy.

Open to: Rudiments and Grammar students were invited to apply for this activity at the end of last school year. We have filled all available places but will open up any events we host such as guest speakers and star gazing to any students who wish to attend.

Resin Craft – Miss Healy and Mrs Muller Resin is an exciting and unique craft that enables you to produce useful and beautiful items that have qualities similar to plastic and glass.

KS3 Art – Mrs Stringer An Art club for Rudiments and Grammar to express themselves and explore painting, drawing and other mediums. Also, the Club will help you with your Art prep.

Craft Club – Ms Towns We complete a series of different crafts over the seasons. Each week will cover a different craft and you will be able to take your creation home with you at the end of the sessions. You will be able to develop the following craft skills: hand sewing, embroidery, pom pom making, Indian block printing, tie dye, hama beads, Christmas decorations, poppy broaches etc.

Polo – Mrs Applegate You will travel to Silver Leys Polo Club, Little Hadham, Ware. Polo is the sport of Kings. You will be learning from polo players both in the arena and on the grass pitches, learning skills and playing chukkas against each other.

Open to: This is suitable for anyone who has an interest in Polo and/or horses, (you will learn to ride if you can’t already.) You must have a helmet and heeled boots which can be supplied at cost. Students who attend will return to college ready for collection at 5.30pm.

Are you interested in reporting on the issues that affect you, the College and society? You will be able to go out and interview people around the College about the issues and then spend time editing the podcast together.

Open to: Poetry students Interval Running Training – Mrs Harvey-Keenan Improve your running form and speed with interval sessions. Each session will start with a warmup of drills and strides and then we will focus on different intervals sets each week. There will be short, fast intervals with plenty of recovery time, as well as continuous fartlek sessions and tempo runs. Suitable for students who have some running experience and want to improve.

Also specialist vocabulary for education, medical, retail, transportation and home settings. Accredited certificate available to those that wish to take assessments in each of the areas listed above.

Strategy Board and Card Games – Dr Czajkowski There have been thousands of fantastic new games released in the last few years, and in this club we will be playing some of these, such as Dominion. This is a fantastic deck-building card game lasting around 30 minutes. Every game is different; do you have what it takes to gain the most victory points?

Science in the Movies – Mrs Marrinan Watch exciting and interesting films and discuss the science used as part of the story. We will start with The Martian!

Triple Science – Mrs Muller, Dr Heslin and Mr Webster For those taking Triple Science GCSE - these sessions will focus on developing your practical skills following remote learning. You will be on a three-week cycle between the three subjects. This will build on the work covered in lessons and ensure you are successful in Triple Science.

St Elizabeth’s YC – Mrs Peirce An off-site youth group taking place until 5:30pm.

It is open to all students, but they need either be boarders, or be picked up by parents. St Elizabeth's is a school for students with complex needs including epilepsy.

Economics Soc – Ms Sargent Debates and discussions on current issues in the UK and global economy. Opportunity to watch relevant documentaries, films and TED talks.

Revision and help with understanding theory.

World Cultures Forum: Mrs Simon Are you open to the rest of the world? Do you want to discuss and present cultural and linguistic items of interest - films, art, comics, architecture, people famous or unknown but important, geography, history, music, science? This is the club for you to open your mind and share a different culture. It will make you a more rounded interesting person!

Open to: Poetry and Rhetoric Mosaic Making - Mrs D Stringer You will be taught how to cut mosaics and make a mosaic panel to celebrate and thank the NHS for their support given to us during the pandemic. The panel will be displayed in the Art Department for all to see.

Students in Syntax will choose between the Army or RAF section and will complete their Phase 1 badged qualifications and then move on to their advanced badges. Towards the end of the year they will complete the JNCO cadre to start to develop their leadership skills.

Students in Poetry will focus on completing their advanced trade qualifications within the RAF and Army whilst continuing to develop their leadership skills as Section Commanders. They will then complete Method of Instruction training, learning how to prepare and deliver a lesson to their peers so they are confident to move into the role of Senior Cadets as they start sixth form.

Open to: Syntax and Poetry students (who have already been in CCF). Rhetoric students may also choose this activity (in addition to Tuesday) in order to plan and prepare lessons and complete additional training for national cadet competitions.

Senior Drama – (Sept – November) – Mrs Schiff

Open to: Syntax, Poetry, Rhetoric I, Rhetoric II - You do not need to be studying Drama GCSE or A Level to take part. You must choose BOTH Thursday and Friday rehearsals to be involved.

NOTE: Thursdays each week will involve an EXTENDED rehearsal until 6:30 for the Senior Drama production This exciting opportunity will give you the chance to work as a performer or backstage crew on a full scale Senior Drama production to be performed in the Michaelmas term. There will be opportunities for both speaking and non-speaking roles.

If you want to take part as a designer you may also wish to opt for the Technical Designers club on Wednesdays p7.

Microsoft Office skills – (week A only) – Mr Kovacevic Top Microsoft Office Skills Many job descriptions contain at least one Microsoft Office program. From my search through many jobs and from talking to students in my classes. The two software programs I hear about most are Excel and Word. Aside from those two, the most frequently referred to programs are Outlook, PowerPoint, and Access.

College Production – Mr Veasey & Mr Woodhall Auditions are on September 14th. Rehearsals for the College Production will commence following the Senior Drama Production in November. The cast will need to attend Thursday until 6.30 and Friday P7.

Computer Code Club – Mr Fry Location - (ICT3) To improve and develop their coding skills and work on practical computing projects including web based applications and Robotics.

Open to: Students studying Computer Science in Years 10-13 Literary Society – Mr Woodward An activity for any student who wishes to share and discuss their passion for literature. We will discuss favourite novels, plays, poems, writers and genres, as well as provide opportunities for students to present their very own reviews and recommendations.

Using a Sewing Machine and textiles – Mrs Townes If you want to learn to sew or continue to grow in confidence using a sewing machine, this is for you.

This activitey will work on a range of projects including cusion covers, PJ making, tote bags, fabric storage bags etc.

Open to: Elements, Rudiments and Grammar Lego Club – Dr. Heslin Design, create, share, play! Lego is the ultimate buiding block. (Just don’t step on any… ouch!)

Interval Running Training – Mrs Harvey-Keenan

Improve your running form and speed with interval sessions. Each session will start with a warmup of drills and strides and then we will focus on different intervals sets each week. There will be short, fast intervals with plenty of recovery time, as well as continuous fartlek sessions and tempo runs.

Suitable for students who have some running experience and want to improve.

Open to: Syntax, Poetry and Rhetoric Table Tennis Ping pong! It’s fast and furious and open to all pupils who would like to enjoy a game and work on their skills.

Litter Picking – Mrs Franco A fantastic community service. Pick up the litter from around the school site to help keep it looking beautiful!

Open to: All Animal Club - Mr Hounsell, Dr Banahan and Mrs Mallabone If you love animals, this is the club for you. We take dogs for walks, visit the goats on site, meet bearded-dragons, make feeders for birds and organise the charity dog show and animal photography competitions.

Polymer clay is a fun way to relax and get in touch with your creative side. We will be making charms, jewellery, and useful gadgets. Your imagination is your only limitation.

Geog Soc– Mrs Barnard The Geography Society is run with the pupils and is designed to support their class learning and understanding of geography. Activities are considerable and varied and include: • Regular talks from academia, business leaders, government representatives and pupils • Decision-making activities and debates, exploring topical government initiatives • A blog written and edited by St Edmund’s Geography students • Trips to talks at the Royal Geographical Society • Quizzes and participation in The GA’s Worldwise Quiz Competition • Entry to The Young Geographer of the Year Award • Oxbridge Essay Competitions • Consolidation of A Level Geography material Open to: Rhetoric

Dungeons and Dragons (D&D) – Mr Chapman This is more than a board game. When you play D&D you and your friends are telling a story together; guiding your heroes through quests for treasure, battles with deadly foes, daring rescues, and much more.

Psychology Film Club – Mr Eliasson Watch and discuss films relating to Psychology looking at the influences behind character motivations and plot. A wide range of films are available with examples from shutter island to a beautiful mind.

Physics Soc – Dr Eves A student led, student run society open to any students with an interest in Physics. Studying Physics at A level not a requirement to be a member. Peruse the latest Brian Cox BBC documentaries, host debates on the paradoxes of Quantum Mechanics, invite guest speakers to explore Black Holes, challenge yourself by undertaking a project with the Physics Olympiad, arrange visits to Physics laboratories. Like Physics itself, the avenues to explore are boundless.

Art - Mrs Applegate and Mrs Brandon A session to help all GCSE and A level artists complete coursework.

Senior Drama – (Sept – November) – Mrs Schiff

Open to: Syntax, Poetry, Rhetoric I, Rhetoric II - You do not need to be studying Drama GCSE or A Level to take part. You must choose BOTH Thursday and Friday rehearsals to be involved.

NOTE: Thursdays each week will involve an EXTENDED rehearsal until 6:30 for the Senior Drama production.

This exciting opportunity will give you the chance to work as a performer or backstage crew on a full-scale Senior Drama production to be performed in the Michaelmas term. There will be opportunities for both speaking and non-speaking roles.

If you want to take part as a designer, you may also wish to opt for the Technical Designers club on Wednesdays p7.

Business Enterprise - Mr Upton Ever dreamt of setting up your own baking business, running a big upcycling project or organising a fundraising event? Business Enterprise club is intended to be a hands-on club giving students some real-life experience of setting up and running their own business or fundraising event. Student will be supported through the process of brainstorming ideas, business planning, marketing and then actioning their plans.

There will be a core focus on sustainable, eco-friendly micro-businesses and it is intended as excellent preparation for those who wish to enter a team for the national Young Enterprise competitions that will run next term.

Open to: Rudiments, Grammar, Syntax, Poetry, Rhetoric I – You do not need to be studying Business GCSE or A Level to take part.

Additional support with prep, study & revision skills and consolidation of subject topics.

Junior Drama – Mrs Wylie and Mrs Collins Join Mrs Wylie and other year groups in Bounds working together on an exciting opportunity to develop new friends and explore a range of different styles of performances. You will eventually work towards the new Bounds production for the Trinity Term 2022. It is expected that you will sign up for both Monday and Friday p7 sessions.

Junior Language Leaders Come and learn how to teach one of your languages to younger students!

Work out your lesson, create your resources and then come and see how it feels to be on the other side...

You will learn and develop skills that you didn’t know that you had, and it will help you to understand how languages work.

You could teach one of the languages that you have learned in the College, or you could introduce a completely new language.

You will keep a diary of your progress and at the end of the year you will received a certificate on completion of the course to state that you have prepared and taught lessons to younger students, and evaluated the experience.
