LEARNING JOURNEY Lent term

OUR CURRICULUM Our Junior School Curriculum for year 3 through to 6 is based on a human concept curriculum; with the principle of preparing our children for the future, their place in the world and how they can positively influence the way it is shaped.

Key concepts are features and characteristics of navigating life. These are distributed across the year groups with skills and knowledge taught, based around the concepts within the curriculum subjects.

This approach exposes pupils to these concepts across genders, identities, ethnicities, periods of history and into the present day, equipping them with the ability to explore how these may be presented, handled and/or be demonstrated in their future.

Reading comprehension to develop; vocabulary, inference, prediction, explanation, retrieval and summarising Creative and extended writing to cover units on play scripts, letter writing (formal and informal), reviews and narratives including character and setting Weekly grammar, punctuation, spelling and handwriting lessons

MATHS Through Inspire Scheme children will use concrete, pictorial and abstract methods to learn about:

Fractions - parts of fractions, equivalent fractions, compare, add and subtract fractions

Money – adding and subtracting fractions regrouping, rounding and compensating including word problems

Decimals – tenths and hundredths (place value, ordering, comparing and recognising as fractions)

Length, Mass and Volume – recognising units of measure, conversion of units, and word problems

SCIENCE Electricity Safety Where does electricity come from Appliances which use electricity Investigative work to construct simple circuits using components Identify symbols

Sound How are sounds made and how they travel Anatomy of an ear and safety with sounds Pitch and volume linked to vibrations and distance of sound.

Changes of State Solid, liquids or gases Observe some materials change state with temperature (evaporation and condensation) Set up simple practical enquiries, comparative and fair tests Make observations and take accurate measurements using a range of equipment Present findings on tables, diagrams, charts and tables

Use maps to locate continents, countries and oceans of the world accurately

Explore and identify countries, capital cities and physical features in Europe using Atlases and maps

Understanding the cause and effect of earthquakes and volcanoes (investigating volcanoes experiment) with focus on Pompeii

MUSIC TOPIC THEME: HAIKU, MUSIC AND PERFORMANCE (THEME: HANAMI FESTIVAL) Work as a group to create a piece of music.

TOPIC THEME: ADAPTING AND TRANSPOSING MOTIFS Learn a new song, singing in time and in tune while following the lyrics.

Transpose their motif, using sharp or flat notes where necessary and change the rhythm.

RELIGIOUS STUDIES TOPIC - The Concept of Life as a Journey The children will consider the meaning and value of ceremonies that mark life milestones, including the symbols used. Some examples being baptism, Bat Mitzvah and sacred thread ceremonies Think about the symbolism, meaning and value of ceremonies that mark the commitment of a loving relationship between two people: compare marriage ceremonies and commitments in two religious traditions.

Explore some basic ideas about what Christians, Hindus and Jewish people believe about life after death Reflect on their own ideas about community, belonging and belief.
