Catching up with those who we think are miles ahead.

Fitting in with those who we think have arrived.

sides with the group that appears to have it right.

Important because if

catching up, choosing sides or fitting in hasn’t worked for us, perhaps we should try tuning in & dropping out: Tuning in to that which moves us closer to our goals and dreams. And dropping out of those distracting activities that slow the process, and prevent us from getting there.

I was sitting at Coffee Bean with a client who is a very successful P.R. person, and we were discussing her “willingness” to do what ever it takes to grow her company and expand her client roster. Finally I suggested that a conversation about what she was “unwilling” to do could be more interesting and valuable. At that point there was a pause the size of the Grand Canyon, and the dialog immediately shifted to the land of resistance and denial—which led to this question:

What are you “unwilling” to do to forward your art or enterprise?

— Are you unwilling to be the one to “step up” and resolve any communication

breakdowns or personal/business conflicts with your partners, team, clients, band mates or board members that may be stalling or stopping the progress of your project?

— Are you unwilling to relax your tight grip on the way things were, and begin to embrace the way things are—especially with regard to technology, and the many changes currently disrupting our industry?

— Are you unwilling to give up being so desperately right about so many things (which only cause your artistic projects and entrepreneurial ventures to lose traction, fall behind and stress you out)?

— Are you unwilling to give up “guessing” and “self-diagnosing” on matters that only an (outside) expert should address? Especially during these challenging economic times when accuracy, productivity and efficiency are so vital.

— Are you unwilling to put at risk who you are for who you could become, even if it meant starting over?

Important because it’s so easy to proclaim what we’re willing to do, and so revealing to expose what we’re not.

By the time this, their third album came out, Don Brewer, Mark Farner and Mel Schacher were well on their way to becoming America’s premier hard rocking power trio. Hailing from Flint, Michigan, both Don and Mark had been in the mid-60’s band, Terry Knight and the Pack, while Mel spent time in ? and the Mysterians.

With Terry Knight handling managerial and production duties, Grand Funk Railroad formed in 1969. Knight booked the new band at the Atlanta Pop Festival in 1969 where they stood out among the other 20-plus acts on the bill. Capitol Records wasted no time signing them after this, and they headlined the same festival in 1970. They released “On Time” and “Grand Funk” (aka “The Red Album”) in 1969. Both albums did well in spite of less than stellar reviews by Rolling Stone Magazine, among others. By 1972, Grand Funk Railroad had reason to believe that Terry Knight was skimming off more than his share of the band’s riches and they sued to be released from Knight’s grip. The lawsuit lasted over two years, but the band prevailed.

After leaving Capitol in 1976, they planned to break up due to personality differences. But Frank Zappa expressed interest in producing the band and they recorded “Good Singin’, Good Playin’” together. This would be their final studio album. Even with Zappa’s enthusiastic support, they couldn’t overcome their differences and disbanded before the album’s release that summer. Both Brewer and Schacher have continued touring with a revamped GFR over the years, while

Farner has pursued a solo career.

Terry Knight was murdered in 2004 at age 61 by his daughter’s drug addicted boyfriend.

“Closer To Home” was their third album certified gold by The Recording Industry Association of America in a year’s time.

Farner’s screaming guitar calisthenics, along with Brewer’s spot-on drumming and Schacher’s driving bass are running on full steam throughout all eight tracks. They were showing signs of maturing musically with songs like “Sin’s A Good Man’s Brother,” “Aimless Lady,” and “Mean Mistreater.” “I’m Your Captain” is a true classic that has come to define their pre-top 40 sound. At 9 minutes and 47 seconds, it is their longest song and a great one to seek out to get reacquainted with this American Band.

Paul McCartney, because he’s Paul McCartney, has always been able to recruit the cream of the crop when it came to finding sidemen to work with in his post-Beatles career. They have included guitarists Denny Laine, Henry McCullough, Robbie McIntosh, Hamish Stewart, David Gilmour, and current axe -man, Rusty Anderson. Scottish born Jimmy McCulloch was 20 years old when he joined McCartney’s band Wings in 1974. “Venus And Mars” was his first album, followed by “Wings At The Speed Of Sound” in 1976, and the live document of their 1976 tour, “Wings Over America.” As a young teen playing with One In A Million, Jimmy caught the eyes and ears of Pete Townsend who got the band to tour with The Who in 1967. In 1969, Townsend put 15 year old Jimmy together with Andy Newman and Speedy Keen, and Thunderclap Newman was created.

They reached the

number one spot on the UK charts with “Something In The Air” and released a spectacular album produced by Townsend, “Hollywood Dream” that same year. Jimmy’s virtuosity is on full display throughout that album.

The band split up in 1971, leaving behind only one hit and one LP. In 1972, McCulloch replaced Les Harvey in Stone The Crows after Harvey was electrocuted during a performance. Jimmy left Wings in 1977 to join Steve Marriott in the Small Faces for a short time. This was followed by two bands; Wild Horses and The Dukes. Even though he wasn’t known to be a user of hard drugs, Jimmy McCulloch died in 1979 at age 26 from cardiac arrest after an apparent overdose. By 1975, Wings had become a well established hit making machine. Besides McCartney and McCulloch, the band also featured Paul’s wife Linda, former Moody Blues member Denny Laine on guitar and bass, and Geoff Britton and Joe English on drums. This album is considered by many to be Wings’ best work. Recorded in New Orleans and Los Angeles, it also includes guest appearances by Allen Toussaint, Tom Scott, and Dave Mason. “Rock Show” well…just rocks, as does the whimsical “Magneto And Titanium Man,” “Letting Go,” and the bluesy “Call Me Back Again.” The album also contains their hit, “Listen To What The Man Said.” Jimmy McCulloch’s blazing guitar is prominently featured in generous supply, along with his song, “Medicine Jar.” But if you want to experience this impressive young guitar monster at his finest, seek out Thunderclap Newman’s album, “Hollywood Dream.”

BY ROB DICKENS This is Jason Eady’s first album in more than three years (via Thirty Tigers). The self-titled release is the Mississippi-born, singer-songwriter's sixth full-length collection. He has a voice that belongs to the school of Merle Haggard and Willie Nelson, with a cadence, diction and resonance that leaps out from the speakers.

The album contains ten songs which rely on that voice and the strength of his songwriting. The arrangements are classy but stripped back to spotlight the hard-edged grace of the material which sounds, thankfully, more like a live band at a country dance than one with lavish production values. The only electric instrument used was a steel guitar.

To add some sonic depth, the album features Vince Gill, Tammy Rogers (from driving bluegrass outfit The Steeldrivers) and wife, singer/songwriter Courtney Patton. The result is a wonderfully engaging and consistent record.

With somewhere in the neighborhood of a billion guitar players in the world, it’s safe to assume that good guitar players, even very good ones are a dime a dozen. But finding the ones that really stand out, the true virtuosos that seem to be able to do it all, aren’t as easy to track down. Enter Ron Baker from the Texas coastal town of Port Aransas. He’s one of those guys.

After spending 11 years as lead guitarist in Country supervoice Charley Pride’s touring band, Ron headed south of the border to Ajijic, Mexico where he lived a leisurely life on Lake Chapala with fellow expatriates and taking part in their thriving music scene.

Upon returning to the States and settling in Port Aransas, Ron opened his successful Ellie’s Toybox studio. Ron’s latest album, YOU NEVER SEE IT COMIN’… is a country flavored collection of covers; some

familiar, many not. Ron handles all the instruments and vocals, but his stellar guitar work stands out on songs like “Restless,” which kicks things off, and “Tumbleweed.”

“Katy Brought My Guitar Back Today” shows off Ron’s finely honed production skills, as does his instrumental take on the Hank Williams classic, “I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry,” featuring the late Jay Shuffle on harmonica. Steve Spurgin’s “San Jacinto Farewell” tells the story of a man reluctantly leaving his love to meet his fate in the bloody Texas fight for independence.

The Western tradition is alive and well on Ron’s version of “I’m An Ol’ Cowhand” which once again features some very nice guitar work, while Gary Stewart’s “Empty Glass” takes you right into the honky-tonk. Vince Gill’s autobiographical “This Guitar And Me” closes the album with Ron’s laid back vocals and Hip-Shot Stratocaster. Ron gives all 12 tracks on YOU NEVER SEE IT COMIN’… his own personal touch and makes each of them his own. These newly recorded songs are a nice addition to a career that has taken Ron Baker from Texas to all corners of the globe, and his experience and love of playing shines through.

Originally from the lower Mississippi delta, Eady has always been attracted to country music and has been performing since the age of fourteen. A move to Nashville and then back to Jackson followed with him now playing a pivotal role in the Fort Worth Texas music scene.

Jason Eady is a follow-up to 2014’s well-received Daylight/Dark and again teams up with producer and talented singer/songwriter Kevin Welch.

Key tracks are 'Barrabas' (a wonderful tale of making the most of second chances), 'No Genie In This Bottle', the slow, bluesy 'That's Why I Left Atlanta', the twostepping, Texas swing of 'Waiting To Shine' and the reflective '40 Years'. In truth, tough, there is not one misstep here.

Jason Eady and his contemporary Sam Outlaw are bringing us some of the most refreshing and marquee country music around. Totally recommended.

A new Ray Wylie Hubbard album is always something to look forward to. On his latest release, TELL THE DEVIL I’M GETTIN’ THERE AS FAST AS I CAN, the veteran Texas singer/songwriter is in fine form as he revisits some of his familiar themes; the devil, guitars, snakes, and Lightning Hopkins, all delivered with his own sardonic wit and understated manner. The cover photo has Ray with angel wings looking like he’s ready to take on the devil. The 11 self produced tracks were recorded at Mike Morgan’s The Zone studio in Dripping Springs, Texas. The opening track is “God Looked Around,” a dirge-like nod to the Creator that culminates in the Garden of Eden, while “Dead Thumb King” takes us on a dark trip to the crossroads. “Spider, Snake and Little Sun” pays tribute to the influence of Minneapolis’ “Spider” John Koerner, Dave “Snaker” Ray, and Tony “Little Sun” Glover, a folk trio as sinister and gritty as The Kingston Trio is slick and clean cut. “Lucifer and the Fallen Angels” is a vivid hell bound trip to Alabama with you-know-who, delivered with a rocking Americana beat. “Open G” is a bluesy lesson in Ray’s own brand of slide guitar “House of the White Rose Bouquet” is an other-worldly account of life on the dark side, complete with sex, drugs and debauchery. follows and features guest artists Eric Church and Lucinda Williams. Ray sings as if he is sure of his fate, underlined with electric slide guitar, mandolin and Hammond organ and rocks in true RWH style. “The Rebellious Sons” features Austin’s The Bright Light Social Hour in an ominous rocker, while “Old Wolf” has Ray singing about a road worn musician, emphasized with his own Howlin’ Wolf howl. “Prayer” is the confusion and anxiety in trying to sort out what is sacred and true. Patty Griffin sings with Ray on the closer, “In Times of Cold,” which serves as a postscript to the themes that come before it. The musicians know just what – and what not - to add to the mix. Nothing is overplayed. The lead guitar and drums are in the capable hands of Ray’s son, Lucas Hubbard, and Kyle Schneider. They are joined

by Jeff Plankenhorn on Dobro and mandolin, Bukka Allen on Hammond B3, and Mike Morgan and Pan Manskee on bass. The guest artists rise to the occasion and compliment the tracks they appear on. Don’t expect any “Redneck Mother” or “Screw You, We’re From Texas” songs this time around. But TELL THE DEVIL I’M GETTIN’ THERE AS FAST AS I CAN is definitely Ray Wylie Hubbard just as we want him to be .

Dan Brodhag is a singer, songwriter from Corpus Christi who puts on a great benefit concert every spring. Dan is the leader of local garage-Americana band Johnson Grass and also does solo and duo shows featuring his original songs. His new solo album “Gravity” is out now.

So just to start, your last name seems pretty unusual for this area, so where does it originate from?

It's an actually an old German name and literally translated it means “the cattle are dying.”

Oh my, that is really funny! I figured it was East European and that is quite the translation. So on to the real stuff. You spent a good part of spring and summer in a recording studio. Tell me about the new album.

Yeah, I worked with the same group of people from the first album and we've live cut everything, so it really has the same dynamics. The new record is called Gravity and was recorded and mixed at Aransas Music Emporium with Tony Saracene as the engineer. We used some of the recordings he engineered and recorded at the McCumber Institute of the Musically Literate, from when we put out the first album, and then we did a couple of fresh tracks. The ones we took from McCumber’s we added a couple of things to or made a couple of changes to like background vocals and whatnot.

So, who is on the album?

Well, because we did 20 tunes and pulled 10 of them off it's kind of hard to remember who's on which songs and which ones got cut. George Hermes is on mandolin and dobro and most of the guitar work is Tony Saracene, they’re STEAMMAGAZINE.NET

both on just about every track. Bobby Donaho on drums and then Sam Allred did a lot of the bass lines.

Oh yeah, they’re all good. Is it a themed album?

No, there's no rhyme or reason to any of it The album and the title track are called “Gravity”. It’s a tune I wrote a while back.

It's about when things fall apart and you kind of expected it. It’s not so much about life but what happens in your life. Because you know in life when you see “it” coming, you just ball-up and roll. There are a couple of love songs, as I occasionally do. And there's a little blues thing that I recently wrote. I’m trying to remember all the songs on it, but again we did 20 tunes and we only kept 10 for this.

Are you going to take the other 10 for a third album?

Yeah I am, but I’m not sure just when I’m going to do that.

So where can people see you?

I do my solo stuff at the Corpus Christi Songwriter’s shows, at Vick’s Place, at The Best Little Pour House, and a few other places. If you haven’t been out to the Corpus Christi Songwriters I’ve got to say those guys they are just great. You know I was thinking about this the other night and I need to call Jimmy Willden because I've got the perfect slogan for them (and hopefully I've told them before this comes out), “Corpus Christi Songwriters Night, where there's never a cover.”

That’s great! I hope they like it. Do you play your original songs when you’re with Johnson Grass?

Not many; my solo shows are quite different from being with the band, because you know Johnson Grass is really a cover band.

We’re a garage, Americana group and we play a lot of songs that everybody can recognize.

Who makes up Johnson Grass?

I sing and play guitar. Then we’ve got George Hermes on dobro, Jim Haley on bass and vocals, Jamie Smith on harmonica and percussion, and Butch Davis on guitar, mandolin, and vocals. Right now the band is a little scattered, one has some health issues and the rest of us are real busy with other stuff.

And to that end I'm real active in the Nueces River Preservation Association. We had a great turn out for the river clean up in April and then in May I had my music festival, The Rumble On The River. We finished up the album and now we’re cleaning up the river from Harvey, so I really haven't been playing much.

Speaking of the Rumble on the River, how many years have you been holding this event?

This was number 11. It’s a good time for people to support good causes. I don’t know the numbers off the top of my head, and it probably wasn’t the biggest one yet, but we missed having one last year because of the flooding and this one was a raging success!

You know it’s really great, the musicians and the sponsors get behind it; it’s really almost to the point of having to turn people away because we’re running out of room for everyone.

I know you have lots of sponsors and that the money you raise goes to good causes.

Who were your big sponsors and which groups did you help this year?

The Tradesmen Motorcycle Club of Nueces was this year’s host sponsor. The sound and stage were sponsored by Buddy’s Place (Corpus Christi), Corpus Christi Harley Davidson, O’Brien’s Westwood Lounge (Corpus Christi), and The Best Little Pour House (Orange Grove). And I wish I could speak more about the event sponsors because there are quite a few, but I can’t recall them all right now. I will say the Vick’s Place is always an event sponsor.

We had nine performers/groups this year and like I said they really got behind it. The money was split to the Nueces River Preservation

Association, the Wounded Warrior Project, there was an individual of that club who was in need, and the remainder goes to the USO. Very nice! Seeing that this event is growing all the time, have you begun to think about moving it to a place that can hold a larger crowd and more sponsors?

Well, this is really a locally supported event and, being an all-day open door event like it is, we may have two or three hundred people attend, but most come and go while some stay the whole time.

You’re always so busy, what are you working on now?

Not much. We’ll start planning the Rumble On the River soon and playing a few gigs here and there.

When did you begin practicing your art and how did you learn?

I have always been drawing, since I was maybe 5 years old. My pencil drawings were everywhere, and after I started elementary school; sometimes I got in trouble of drawing on homework sheets or textbooks. "Being an artist" has been my biggest dream as a student, but when the times came to apply for college, I had to make a decision between applying to the art academy or the engineering academy… Unfortunately, I followed the "safer path" and chose "the practical way of learning and living", becoming an engineering student. However, art never really left my life: after I graduated, I quickly became a journalist in a fashion newspaper (the places an engineering degree can take you to…uh), then worked as a reporter and editor for several years. In 2006, when I was about to hit my 40th, I realized, that this was it: I couldn't wait anymore, the dream of dedicating my life to fine arts had to start or it'd be too late. I experimented with free form abstract art for a while, and 4 years later, I found that female figurative art is where I have the most to expression and contributes. My sketching foundation helped me a lot to grasp the figure form, but it took me several months to get used to how to apply the oil paints, and being able to use it as the way I wanted.

Which artists have most influenced your work, and who are your favorite artists?

By the time I started to paint, I spent my time studying a lot of painting works, from the old masters to the emerging artists of all sorts, trying to understand and absorb the essentials of oil painting.

After this phase, I studied several Chinese artists (both famous and emerging) whose work were more contemporary, more "expressive of the modern society", and those artists actually deeply influenced me and helped me refine my techniques and vision. Their names are: Xin Dongwang, Xia Junna, and Li Shuang. My favorite artist is Xin Dongwang (he is a bit like Lucian Freud, bold paints, crude style), although my style is far from his, but every time I look at his

Is there one piece that is special to you, or that you particularly enjoyed creating?

Yes, "Lady in Blue" is very special to me, because it was the first figure painting that I completed and then I felt: wow, I found myself in it. It is a brownish toned 36 inch square painting--a very modern style Asian girl with an eerie touch… very special and my husband's favorite!

The subject is wearing a dark blue shoulder-less evening dress, with messy twirling up strange hair style, sitting next to a little typical Chinese designed wood table, and there is an Amaryllis flower pot on top of it. The girl is leaning to the side of the table, gazing towards the viewer, with an a bit odd position, feels like she is being pulled by the table and flower pot. I created the face, and

I love your portraits and abstracts, but have you stepped outside of that comfort and tackled other styles or mediums? If so, what? If not, why?

Thank you. There are so many forms of art I love, but life is short; right now I am still refining my style and even though I have experimented with several variations (acrylic, oil, abstract, figurative, etc.), I now really want to focus on what provides me the opportunity to express myself the most. I tried to paint a couple landscapes and still-life in oil, and a bird as you know, for fun mostly. I found that figure and abstract are still my favorite forms of art, and the most expressive, at least for me--funny though how, for me, these two appear on the opposite in terms of using paints; one feels so "restrained" on how to apply paint, while the other is so free – but I love them both equally. Ultimately though, I realized that painting for me is not only about the fun and pleasure of playing with paints, the truth is that I fell in love this magic that through applying the paints I could create a scene that speaks to me, and digging out the little universe within my heart and soul, depicting my innermost emotions and thoughts.

worked on the expression very hard, just trying to let her come alive, and that being able to speak to the viewer of this obvious contrary of modern attitude and heavy traditional bond behind her. I realized this is a painting naturally came within my inner self--having grown up in such an environment carried with both heavy tradition and heavy politics, and I sort of hated and escaped from it, and found myself freedom and a modern life style, physically and spiritually. But on

the other hand, I think tradition has its glory, and it profoundly enriches us in many ways. I am molded by my childhood background, and I am aware of it, I know that I constantly fight on my traditional baggage deep down, but at the same time I still treasure it, and accept this conflict. P reservation H all J azz B and (PHJB), known for their preservation

of traditional New Orleans Jazz as well as bringing it to the new generation by performing with bands as the Foo Fighters, My Morning Jacket, and Trombone Shorty will report to the Empire Theater with their signature, high-spirited sound. Steeped in history, PHJB was formed in 1961 by Allan and Sandra Jaffe and took their name from Preservation Hall, the venerable music venue located in the heart of New Orleans French Quarter. We had a chance to speak with Ben Jaffe to discuss New Orleans, his Heritage, and the impact his band is making on the worldwide music community.

We know you took over your father's role in the band after his untimely passing, but I do have to ask that while obviously raised in a musical environment was jazz always your passion or did you mold into that role when you took it over.

In New Orleans you don't really choose Jazz, the music is all around you. You become part of something bigger than yourself in New Orleans Saint, a piece of an ecosystem down here I walked out of my house this morning, and there was a band playing music across the street., My Daughter is being raised the same way in this musical Community where you are part of it OCT 2017

without having to make a huge effort. You don't have to an hour away to take lessons, those lessons are on the radio when you wake up in the morning, they're in the church on Sunday, and they’re at Preservation Hall 7 days a week 365 days a year.

When you look at New Orleans now, post Katrina, and it seems to be all about the music; but when you look back 20 years ago, it was all about boobs, girls gone wild, and Mardi Gras.

Not to put a weird spin on it, but while Katrina was devastating to the area it has allowed New Orleans to come back to its roots putting a positive spin on things.

It's absolutely one of those challenging pills that all of us survivors till with every day.

That in spite of incredible tragedy, this thing that brought us to our knees, also had a silver lining it wasn't obvious or easy for us to get here. It's not like we woke up one morning and Preservation Hall is headlining at Bonnaroo. This was a job, we put on our pants every day, and we went to work and made this happen. It wasn't a lottery. We worked very hard to protect and preserve it every day of our lives.

As a musician and as a resident and one that survived the devastation, do you ever sit back and think that this might not be the safest place to reside? You are still well within the target zone for Hurricane living at the water line, though below sea level in most parts of the city.

Especially now, as a father, does the possibility of moving ever cross your mind?

No, it hasn't. I was just in Miami recently, and they are also in the forefront of harm’s way as well. Anyone living on the coast has to accept that we are living in this new paradigm. There was never a question in my mind that I would leave; I was here through

the whole storm. I'll probably be one of those guys you see during the next storm on my roof waving to the helicopters. This is my town and I'm not going anywhere.

Having now worked with both Arcade Fire and My Morning Jacket the band has seen an influx of new fan and with that is sometimes the temptation to change your musical style to continue to appeal to that different, larger base.

How do you handle and squash such temptation?

I would say that is part of the challenge of being an artist discovering those things about you. That's what I emerged from Katrina with, a deeper understanding and appreciation of who I am and what my purpose and the purpose of Preservation Hall is in the world. You don't come upon these artistic decisions lightly; they come through a very organic process. I'm a strong believer in musical friendships and building bridges between musical styles and musical communities. That's when change happens, when you're invited to open up for Arcadia Fire at Madison Square Garden.

Does playing a large venue like the Garden spoil you though when you return back to Preservation Hall., a more intimate venue on a different energy level?

I really don't see it that way, in fact, I would flip that around and say that playing Preservation Hall prepares you to play at those larger venues, it takes the edge off. It helps you mentally put yourself in that place you need to be when you are on that stage. You don't walk onto stage at Carnegie Hall, there is a process that you go

through as an artist, and you ARRIVE at Carnegie Hall. You are invited to be there, kind of how you are invited to be at Preservation Hall. There is a sense of achievement, and there should be when you arrive at those places.

As festival season draws to the end we saw that you were on a few bills. Is it intimidating to be the lone Jazz act on some of those bills, trying to fit in with a musical crowd different than your own?

I would say it's thrilling more than anything to be in these nontraditional musical environments. It's exciting and it's thrilling like we're achieving something and moving our tradition forward. To be put onto those stages raises the musical bar for everybody.

There is something that happens when Preservation Hall shows up and is at the party. It creates excitement and energy and it raises the musical bar.
