Project 01 The Nested Stage

The Nested Stage is located in Syracuse, NY. It contains a performance space and an open-air market. The tectonic system and wood assmbly detail of this project are learned from Nest We Grow by Kengo Kuma & Associates. So, the performance space locates in the middle of the nest, which is dug into the underground, and surrounded by other programs like lobby, strorage, “green room” and office. In addition, I studied the soudsuit by Nick Cave and chose the one with a abacus and stacked buttons to activate my project. The beads on the abacus can move as the people in the soundsuit move, so I tried to develop a system of alterable elements --movable wood screen, and use it as a separation between performance space and other programs and on the top of the open-air market. In this case, the privacy of the performance space and the market can be changed.

Project 02 Transformative Spatial Condition

This project is a community teen maker space located in downtown Columbus, IN. The space is designed based on the spatial condition of different thresholds and how people’s activity is affected by special events. Curtains are considered as part of the tectonic system, and are used to divide the space within the grid generated by wood beams and columns, creating a more dynamic system. The circulation system is designed to provide an experiential tour, with people placed in the midst of different thresholds. The program is organized also based on different threshold conditions, with each program considered as an individual space. In addition, the use of curtains enables flexible activities to take place, making the function of each enclosure changeable. The envelope features glass facades on the ground floor and rectangular glass walls on the upper floor, giving the building a sense of floating, which attracts citizens and tourists to walk into the building and allows for more public activities to take place to activate the city.

The “Enfer” is a banned book archive located in downtown Syracuse, NY. This project combines a huge central mass and several angled boxes. The central mass symbolize rules made by the government, and the boxes with different angles represent that each individual has their own point view of the world, and these ideas may collide with each other, especially the written down of these ideas may break the rules set by the government. The governments do not want some of these content to be seen, so more and more books are banned every year.

The entire building is an archive which opens to those who wants to get access to the darkest and painful side of the world. Also, walking into this archive is somehow breaking the rules. The building envelope is made of concrete, which isolates the archive and the outside world, providing a quiet space for readers and people who work in there. I turned the existing parking lot into a drive-in theater and utilize the south facade. Drive-in theater is a product of highly developed technology, which implicates that with the development of technology, people may not preferred to read paperback book. Instead, people tend to spend more time on digital devices. Moreover, people can get access to a book through different media, so it may be more difficult to actually “banned” a book if it can be found on the internet. If there are no more books come in due to this, the archive may not be filled up.
