Forder Programme

I

am delighted to be able to share with you a brief summary of the opportunities that exist for pupils outside of the classroom at St Dunstan’s.

The Forder Programme is the name given to our co-curriculum. Its name is taken from the pioneering second Headmaster of St Dunstan’s, the Revd Forder, who believed passionately that schools should offer more to the education of young people than classroom learning. His educational philosophy was to put the health and character of a pupil above the acquisition of knowledge, which led to the introduction of a pioneering programme of ‘outside activities’.

The first programme, which ran at the end of the school day on three afternoons each week, included: Games, Wireless Telegraphy, Dramatic Works, French Reading, the production of an honest Newspaper, Map Modelling or Lecturettes on industries or Photography.

The Forder Programme today operates alongside the Examined and Additional curricula, to augment the broad and varied educational experience the pupils at St Dunstan’s receive. This ambitious, forward-thinking programme gives each individual the freedom to create their own unique journey, with each pathway providing the opportunity for the development of character, in its broadest possible context. This emphasis on character is evident in our five activity profiles, summarised in this brochure, which are based on our College values: Curiosity, Compassion, Courage, Creativity and The Core.

We urge each pupil to embrace the spirit of our College motto – albam exorna – by taking ownership of their individual journey, creating memorable experiences, treating each activity as an opportunity for personal growth, and carrying the lessons learnt through school into life beyond.

ach of the activities that we offer as part of the Forder Programme will be organised into one of five profiles: the five Cs. Each ‘C’ is based on one of the College’s core values, which is in keeping with the key role that we see the Forder Programme playing in the development of character.

We encourage early diversification and challenge younger pupils to experience activities in all five areas before they gradually specialise as they move through the College.

his profile is typically limited to sport in schools, but not at St Dunstan’s! Whilst still providing a home for recreational and competitive sport, it also accommodates activities such as mindfulness, yoga, pilates, diet and nutrition. This profile supports the College’s continuing drive to take a proactive rather than reactive approach to pupil mental and physical health.

his profile incorporates current programmes, including DofE and the CCF, but also a newly formed adventurous activity arm, including activities such as climbing, water-sports and orienteering. As pupils move through the College they are supported in achieving their Bronze, Silver and Gold Awards should they choose to follow that path. From Year 9 they can also access the CCF, with the Army and Navy sections and the Corps of Drums.

COMPASSION PROFILE 3

ommunity service and volunteering play a key role within this profile but it also incorporates the development of leadership within the College community. Although more prevalent in the middle and upper school, we encourage all pupils to seek out opportunities to give back to their communities, both near and far, and to develop confidence by aspiring to lead in the delivery of the co-curricular programme itself.

rt, Music, Drama and Dance are all essential components of any young person’s development. This profile is an unashamed champion of creative endeavour.

We aim to provide opportunities for pupils at all levels, from learning something new, right through to performing in one of the College’s major productions.

rogressing from departmental clubs such as debating, chess and computing into Academic Societies, this profile provides pupils with continued academic enrichment, without the pressure of examination or assessment. It is also an ideal opportunity for pupils to experience subjects not currently on offer within the curriculum, including politics, law, engineering, medicine and alternative languages.
