LETTERFROM THECEO

Each day can herald something new.

Dear St. David's Family,

It is with great pleasure that I address you for the first time as the newly appointed CEO of St. David's Children's Society, encompassing St David's Adoption Service, Fostering Service, and AFKA As we delve into this edition of our St David's Adoption Service newsletter, "Create, Build & Grow," I am filled with excitement and anticipation for the journey ahead.

Reflecting on the themes of creation, building, and growth, I am reminded of the incredible transformations within families whether through adoption or fostering. Each day presents opportunities to create lasting bonds, build nurturing environments, and foster growth in the hearts and minds of our children.

As we navigate this journey together, I am thrilled to announce that we are expanding our services to include foster placements for children aged 012. This initiative, rooted in the spirit of creation and growth, underscores our unwavering commitment to providing safe, loving environments for children in need.

If you or someone you know is interested in learning more about fostering, please do not hesitate to reach out to us at info@stdavidscs.org. Your support in spreading the word about this vital service is invaluable as we continue building and growing our caregivers community.

I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to lead an organisation that embodies the values of empathy, compassion, and unwavering commitment to children's welfare Together, we can create a brighter future, build stronger families, and foster growth in the lives of every child we serve

I extend my heartfelt thanks to each St. David's family member for your dedication and support. Let us embrace the journey ahead with optimism, determination, and a steadfast commitment to creating, building, and growing together.

MEETAPANELMEMBER: BRUCEMCINNES

Dadi, Art teacher, Avid reader, Cardiff Devils fan & Panel Member.

Bruce, an adoptive Dadi and an art teacher, brings a unique perspective to education. His journey has been one of advocating for diversity and inclusion in every facet of education, from the curriculum to the school library. Growing up under Section 28, where positive images of gay relationships were prohibited in schools, Bruce experienced firsthand the impact of a lack of representation. It struck him deeply how crucial it is for children to feel seen and represented. This realization has become the cornerstone of his approach to education.

In his art classes, Bruce endeavours to incorporate diverse themes and artists that reflect the richness of the school community Whether admiring the vibrant patterns in the fashion photography of Thandiwe Muriu or exploring the intricate geometric designs of Islamic architecture, he strives to ensure that every student feels their background and experiences are valued.

Representation isn't just about seeing oneself reflected; it's also about learning about others' lives and cultures. Through the art curriculum, Bruce aims to broaden students' horizons and foster empathy and understanding for diverse perspectives. As part of his role in promoting equality and diversity across the school curriculum, Bruce is excited about the changes happening in Wales' educational landscape It's an opportunity to craft a curriculum that truly reflects and celebrates the school community's diversity

But diversity isn't confined to the curriculum; it must extend to every aspect of school life, including the library. Inspired by author Tọlá Okogwu's analogy of a mirror and a window, Bruce has strived to make the school library a space that reflects and celebrates students' identities while also offering glimpses into different cultures and experiences

Visibility is key. From curated book displays celebrating Black History Month to highlighting LGBTQ+ literature during Pride Month, Bruce wants every student to know that their story matters and is represented in the library. His experience as a member of the St. David's Adoption Panel has further shaped his approach to inclusivity in the school library. Adoption is a topic close to Bruce's heart, and he understands the importance of providing resources that resonate with diverse family structures. Through carefully curated books ike 'All Kinds of Families' and 'Forever Star,' they aim o not only reflect the diversity of family life but also spark meaningful conversations about identity and belonging

Bruce believes education is a powerful tool for shaping a more inclusive and compassionate society. By embedding themes of diversity and inclusion into the curriculum and ensuring representation in the school library, he can empower students to embrace their identities and appreciate the richness of the world around them.

INCONVERSATION: ALUNSAUNDERS

As a multi-talented individual involved in various creative pursuits, Alun Saunders has seamlessly woven his experiences as a playwright, actor, and drag performer into the journey of adopting siblings through St David's Adoption Service. In this exclusive interview, Saunders opens up about his unique challenges and opportunities as a father within his diverse professional background while emphasizing the power of storytelling and performance in creating a nurturing environment for adopted children.

Q: Having worked as a freelancer for around 13 years before becoming a parent, how did you adapt your work-life balance to fit around parenting, particularly the journey of adopting siblings through St David's Adoption Service?

A: I had to really adapt my work-life balance to fit around parenting rather than the other way around It hasn't been easy, and I'm still trying to find the best balance possible, which seems to constantly shift as the kids mature and their lives change, too As an actor and playwright, I've always been in touch with my emotions and ready to explore and discuss them This has helped me as a parent, always asking, 'What's going on there?' rather than simply reacting. People are complex, and it's healthy to check in with ourselves or with each other to see how we ' re feeling.

Q: How did you incorporate your experiences as a playwright, actor, and drag performer into your journey of adopting siblings?

A: As a writer, I've always believed in writing what you know. So, I created a sitcom called 'JAM' for S4C about a drag performer on an adoption journey, flipping my own reality of becoming a dad and starting to perform in drag We need more positive and lighter depictions of our community in the media While adoption can be emotionally draining, it's been nice to revisit some of the lighter aspects of the journey and fictionalize it all

Q: What unique challenges or opportunities have you encountered as a father within your diverse professional background, particularly in the realm of drag performance?

A: As a Drag Dad, I find that sharing a little of our unconventional family life is fascinating to people There are very few Drag Dads out there, and embracing my reality as a comedian offers me the opportunity to share what that's really like I believe in sharing both the positive and challenging aspects of being an LGBTQ+ parent to prepare future adoptive parents realistically Being prepared for unexpected situations is key, whether on stage or at home

Q: How do you balance your artistic career commitments with the responsibilities of parenthood, especially considering the complexities of raising adopted siblings?

A: Balancing artistic career commitments with parenthood has been challenging, especially in an industry where flexibility is essential. Being a parent can be a very real barrier to opportunities due to time constraints. We have to work hard to overcome the challenges, which society is slowly manage to break down. Seeking additional support and being flexible with our time has been crucial, but finding the best balance is still a work in progress.

Q: Drawing from your experiences in the entertainment industry, how do you believe storytelling and performance can create a supportive environment for adopted children facing societal stigmas or identityrelated challenges?

A: Laughing at yourself and not taking yourself too seriously is key Storytelling allows characters to learn about themselves and adapt to challenges. Similarly, as we learn who we are, we become stronger and more adaptive. Embracing our flaws and challenges can help us overcome them or use them to our advantage. I believe that anything which helps empower us - from adopters to adopted children - and allows us to keep exploring who we are and who we can be is essential. Storytelling and performance are great ways to do this.

Aluns' journey as a parent, artist, and advocate exemplifies the transformative power of creativity and compassion in navigating life's complexities. Through his unique blend of storytelling, performance, and advocacy, Alun continues to inspire others to embrace authenticity, resilience, and the joy of self-discovery
