READING NEWSLETTER

Welcome back to the St Cuthbert’s Reading Newsletter In our first edition of the academic year, we will update you on a key change to reading, as well as provide you with ways in which we have celebrated, and promoted reading. As always, we have interviews from staff and pupils, and we have our reading recommendations for you to choose from, just in time for half term.

Igniting a Love of Reading with Sparx!

Following a very successful trial last academic year, we have rolled out Sparx Reader to all pupils in Key Stage 3. This will feature as part of your son’s English homework. You should have received a letter from your son that outlines what Sparx Reader is. Here are the headlines:

Sparx Reader is highly personalised reading homework for pupils, that develops the skill of reading comprehension

Your son will be set a minimum of 30 minutes of reading per week on Sparx Reader. He may, of course, choose to read more, and this should be encouraged.

Teachers can monitor his progress and reading time, so it will be obvious if, for example, your son scrolls to the end of the page, without reading it. Pupils earn Sparx Reader Points (SRP) for completion and effort.

We have had a lot of success already. Well done to the the listed boys for going above and beyond with their reading. Many achieved 5000 SRP (over 8 hours of reading); 10000 SRP (over 16 hours of reading), and 15000 SRP (25 hours of reading). All boys received a certificate to mark this achievement. Fantastic! Keep it up.

Thursday 2 October marked National Poetry Day. To mark the occasion, we held our annual poetry recital in the library. We had representatives from all year groups, including Sixth Form, who read a selection of poetry, and it was fantastic to hear many poems written by pupils and students too.

The Write to Fright!

Back by popular demand! After the success of last year, the Halloween scary story writing competition has returned for another year. We have had many pupils put their creative writing to the test by writing a scary story in only two sentences. We are still looking through the entries, but keep an eye out in the next issue for the winners.

Pupil Book Reviews

‘The Breakfast Club Adventures: The Treasure Hunt Monster’ by Marcus Rashford Reviewed by: Adam Aju, Year 7

"The mystery and excitement puts you on the edge of your seat! I couldn't stop reading this book. I enjoyed this book so much that I wanted it to be longer. The thing that amazed me the most was how Marcus made this awesome book while keeping up with football!"

The Worst Witch Strikes Again by Jill Murphy Reviewed by Olatunde Babajide, Year 8

"I like how the witch was seen as different from everyone else and how she kept getting into trouble when it wasn't initially her fault. All of the trouble the witch gets into made this a really great book. This is a good book for comedy fans."
