From the Rector We’ve got a really busy autumn planned at St Clement’s this year. I hope that people will feel able to support at least some of the events and services.

As I wrote in last month’s Anchor, at the start of September we are hosting a regional Inclusive Church Network meeting. This is on the 8th September and will be a time where people from different local churches can support and encourage one another as we all aim to make the church reflect more truly God’s inclusive unconditional love.

Later in the month, on the 23rd September, we will be holding a Pet Service – only it won’t be in a church building - we are planning to host the event on Chorlton Green. We hope this service will attract people who may not normally come to church.

At the start of October we will hold our Harvest Festival. As usual, this will be an All Age Service with a collection of foodstuffs which will go to the Booth Centre and our own local foodbank.

On the 11th October we are organizing an evening called “Enabling Youth Well-Being” which will look at the issue of mental health and young people. The event is aimed at parents: we hope it will equip

them to help their own young people. It will include a talk from the diocesan youth well-being officer, Amy Sixsmith (who is also preaching at the Parish Eucharist on the 30th September). There will also be various stalls from different sources of help which people can explore during coffee.

Then at the end of October (26th to 28th) we will have our Parish Retreat at Mirfield. This is will be led by my own training Vicar, Canon Alma Servant who will be exploring with us the relationship between art and spirituality.

So this autumn we will be looking outward from our local church: to the wider church (Inclusive Church Event) to the wider community (Pet Service) to those in particular need (Harvest Collection and Youth Mental Well-Being Evening) to God in prayer (Parish Retreat) At the heart of Christianity is the belief that God looks out beyond himself in love. Even though God is complete within himself, God looks beyond the Trinity in order that the created order is brought into existence. God looks beyond himself to enter his creation through his Spirit and through the incarnation of his Son. In church circles we give “looking outward” a name. It’s called Mission. God has given us a mission: to reflect his nature (however imperfectly we do that) by looking outwards in love and service.

Weekday Worship at St Clements “Seven whole days, not one in seven; I will praise thee,” So wrote the poet and Anglican divine, George Herbert. For many years our seven day pattern has been to have midday prayers at 12.15am, Monday to Friday. In 2018 we are trialing a slight different program. We hope that the new days and times will allow a wider group of people to participate. Please do try it out

Inclusive Church Networking Afternoon and more ....

St Clement's Chorlton has been a member of Inclusive Church since the early days. Our neighbouring churches have made Withington Deanery the first Inclusive Church Deanery in the country. In the light of this, St Clement's thought a 'get together' would be a marvellous way to take stock, build and cement relationships and look to the future of Inclusive Church.

Ruth Wilde, National Co-ordinator of Inclusive Church will be our keynote speaker on the day and the Archdeacon of Manchester, the Venerable Karen Lund will join us as we consider issues and look to the future.

You, friends and colleagues are warmly invited to this afternoon of discussion, fellowship, Taize worship and food at St Clement's CE Church, Edge Lane, Chorlton, Manchester during the afternoon of Saturday 08 September 2018 We also hope to welcome other Inclusive Church friends from

around the north west.

Prayer Diary – September Sat Sept1st- We pray for all who depend on the holiday trade; for those towns that have suffered because of it; for all in need of a holiday. We pray for restoration and refreshment for families, communities and towns.

God of all creation, help us to be doers, not just hearers of the word, Putting faith into action, reaping a harvest of hope and transformation.

Mon Sept 3rd - We pray for all beginning a new term at school, college , or university. We pray all who are beginning new jobs, apprenticeships, internships.

Tue Sept 4th – World Wildlife day. We pray for all who are raising awareness of the large number of endangered species of animal and plant. We pray for all who work to enable humans and wildlife to coexist in harmony. We pray for those in areas where there are tensions and difficulties in doing this. We give thanks for the wonders of our world.

Wed Sept 5th - We pray for the women’s hub in Ethiopia, a group come together to set up their own shop powered by the sun. We pray for Christian Aid’s partner in Ethiopia training these women and helping other communities to set up thriving businesses that transform lives.

Thu Sept 6th - We give thanks for writers; for those whose books have taught us so much, have expanded our minds, stimulated our imaginations, introduced us to new ideas, new stories, and have given us great pleasure.

Fri Sept 7th – As we approach world literacy day tomorrow we remember the estimated nearly 800 million adults worldwide who lack basic literacy skills.

We pray for those who work to improve literacy and give thanks for those who teach individuals, classes and empower communities through literacy.

Sat Sept 8th - We pray for all those organising and attending the inclusive church network event at St. Clement’s this afternoon. We pray for all who feel excluded from Church or different aspects of community We pray that we become better at enabling full inclusion, greater welcome and hospitality.

An estimated 8000,000 people take their own life each year throughout the world, 1 every 40 seconds, with about 25 times that number making an attempt. We pray for all who feel desperate, for those who respond to people in need, for those who work to create a healthier society enabling people to connect, communicate and care.

Tue Sept 11th - We pray for all grandparents, for good caring relationships between generations. We pray for all who have lost touch with their grandchildren; for those who feel alone or forgotten.

Wed Sept 12th – We give thanks and pray for Christian Aid partners in the Philippines ICODE. We pray for them and others who are helping communities prepare for disasters. We pray for protection for all who live at risk of typhoons, earthquakes, rising sea levels and extreme climate conditions in the Philippines.

Thu Sept 13th - We pray for writers, illustrators and publishers of children’s books; for libraries and librarians; for teachers and all who encourage children to enjoy stories, information books, poetry. We celebrate those with the gift of storytelling.

Fri Sept 14th - We pray for the people of Kerala and other parts of India who have suffered so terribly from unprecedented monsoon flooding. We pray for all the agencies responding to the emergency and all who will be involved in rebuilding communities, restoring lives and livelihoods.

Sat Sept 15th - We pray for all who are passionate about environmental and ecological issues, who raise awareness about the delicate balance of the earth as an essential life support system; for those who campaign for the protection of and care for the oceans, rainforests and the Arctic with the problem of ever receding ice.

Sun Sept 16th - Trinity 16. Isaiah 50:4-9a; Ps 116:1-8; James 3:1-12; Mark 8:27 -end. We pray for Christians in Pakistan, for greater understanding and tolerance between different communities in Pakistan.

Mon Sept 17th - We pray for families in all shapes and sizes, for single-parent and blended families. We pray for those struggling to maintain a healthy life for their children; for those living in inadequate housing and those with not enough to live on; for those living in conditions of violence or abuse. We pray for a healthy society, able to support individuals and families in difficulty.

Tue Sept 18th –We pray for clean water for everyone; for all those made ill through lack of clean water; for all those whose livelihoods are in danger through water pollution. We pray for an attitude of greater responsibility and care towards our oceans, rivers and land.

Wed Sept 19th – We pray for the prisons in the UK, staining under pressures of cuts, under staffing, growing prison population, inadequate buildings and increased problems of drugs and control. We pray for the inmates and for prison staff. We pray for careful, skilful, wise and just policy making, sentencing and management.

Thu Sept 20th – Merciful God. For the times the cries of the abandoned, The silent fears of the displaced and the secret trauma of those abused Have gone unheard and unnoticed, forgive us.

Amen Fri Sept 21st -International Day of Peace, a call for global ceasefire and nonviolence throughout the world. We pray for all who work towards peace and justice, who work for reconciliation, who work for an end to the conflicts which wreck lives and communities.

Sat Sept 22nd – We pray for all living with dementia and Alzheimers, for all those affected by these conditions, and all who work to support individuals and families affected; for those raising awareness of the condition and challenge stigma.

We pray for all who will attend the pet service on Chorlton Green today and all involved in the organisation and facilitation of the service.

Mon Sept 24th – We pray for the volunteers providing healthcare for children under 5 in Nigeria, trained by Christian Aid partner Ohonyeta Caregivers.

Tue Sept 25th - We pray for the people of Venezuela, suffering from a collapse of economy and monetary system. We pray for wise direction of the government, for those leaving the country, for those staying and suffering uncertainty and poverty. We pray for neighbouring countries, that tensions between local population and the refugees improve and facilities are managed and not put under too much strain.

Wed Sept 26th - 13th after Trinity. We celebrate the diversity of God’s people and pray for those across the world, living in fear because of their sexuality.

Thu Sept 27th - We pray for all the people of our parish. May they know how precious they are in the eyes of God. May they know God’s comfort, mercy, justice and love.

Fri Sept 28th – We give thanks for all the businesses of Chorlton. We pray for all who play a part in the life and community of Chorlton.

Sat Sept 29th- We give thanks for the parks and green spaces of our towns and cities. We pray that we never take them for granted and remember always their beauty and value in our lives and as habitat for plants and animals. We pray for all responsible for their upkeep and maintenance.

Sun Sept 30th – Trinity 18. Numbers 11:4-6, 10-16, 24-29; Ps 19:7-end; James5:13-end; Mark 9:38-end. As we welcome guest preacher Amy Sixsmith today we pray for her in her role as diocesan mental health worker. We remember all those whose lives are affected by mental health issues. We pray for greater understanding, robust support and treatment systems and an end to the stigma often felt.

The Unofficial Archivist.

I discovered this report on the Ladies Sewing Party Harvest Supper in the November 1948 magazine.

“A menu which defied comparison, which amazed those present, and which would certainly have baffled John Strachey had he been there, greatly satisfied the 140 merry-makers who attended the Ladies Sewing Party Harvest supper on 15th October.

For the stout-hearted there was delicious home-made meat pie, for the connoisseur a spicy fruitcake, for the sweet tooth a delicate apple pie, and for the brave souls who stayed in the running until the bitter end, an astonishing variety of pickles.

The whole affair was tastefully illuminated by candlelight, which provided a most romantic setting for the tables groaning under the weight of the goodly fare, and decorated with wisps of corn.

And after supper... the games. Over this ritual of turmoil we shall draw a modest curtain. Suffice it to say that this scribe was not alone in his incredulity at the cavorting on full stomachs of persons who shall remain anonymous, led with relentless vigour and ferocity by a young gentleman wearing a clerical collar and – it must be revealed – no jacket.

When is the next one to be , please?”

Chorlton Civic Society is a local organisation for everyone who lives or works in Chorlton. We have a variety of speakers and events. We meet at the Library usually on the 2nd Tuesday of the month It also organises Chorlton Traders Christmas Window Competition, deals with planning matters, including objections when necessary, it also has a Christmas Meal at a local restaurant. You don’t have to join any Committees unless you want to, nor do you have deliver newsletters. New members and visitors are always welcome.
