From the Rector At a working afternoon for the PCC last month we revisited our inclusivity statement. The reason for the revision was the changing understanding of what inclusivity means.

But of course, these three areas are not the only place when prejudice exists. We can discriminate against people for a whole range of reasons. Weekday Worship at St Clements “Seven whole days, not one in seven; I will praise thee,” So wrote the poet and Anglican divine, George Herbert. For many years our seven day pattern has been to have midday prayers at 12.15am, Monday to Friday. In 2017 we are going to trail a slight different program. We hope that the new days and times will allow a wider group of people to participate. Please do try it out

On the 3rd June, as part of our Second Cup of Coffee series we welcomed Jonny Wilson of L’Arche Manchester, who also preached at the Parish Eucharist.

Jonny told us about the origins of L’Arche and the impact of its work throughout the world.

In a world that values winning and coming first L'Arche Communities are places where people can discover who they are not just what they can do.

There are 11 L'Arche Communities in the UK where people with and without learning disabilities share life together, living and/or working in community.

All are part of the International Federation of L’Arche which was founded by Templeton Laureate Jean Vanier.

Although grounded in the Christian tradition, L'Arche Communities welcome people of all faiths and none: “our vision is a world where all belong.” For more information about L’Arche it is highly recommended to visit www.larche.org.uk L’Arche Manchester, have

recently opened ‘THE HIVE’ at St Paul’s Withington which, alongside the L’Arche house and garden in South Manchester, demonstrates the work and successes of L’Arche asa resource for the Manchester community.

Window Of Opportunity Lunch

Through the dedicated efforts of friends and supporters of the Window of Opportunity scheme, a wholesome homemade lunch was served to 16 contributing members on Saturday, June 2nd . Laurie delivered a thoughtful reflection on Jesus as healer and Jenny in response to a previous invitation from me, proposed in an eloquent and impassioned presentation that we should give our next tranche of money (£500) to the Motor Neurone Disease Association, with particular reference to the story of our good friend Hazel, an MND patient now in the care of a nursing home. Those attending voted unanimously that this should be the case. Another £40 was raised in the form of voluntary donations to be added to our funds.

I should like to extend special thanks to Rosemary, Jane, Helen, Andrew, Laurie and Jenny, for their invaluable help on the day and of course to all the members of the charitable giving scheme who by their regular contributions of 50 pence a week bear witness to Jesus’ words of love for, and commitment to others, set down in Chapter XXV of St. Matthew’s Gospel and illustrated so beautifully in our East Window. If you wish to join our enterprise, please have a word with me.

Prayer Diary – July Sun July 1st- 5th after Trinity. Wisdom 1:13-15, 2:23 -24; Ps 30; 2 Corinthians 8:7-end; Mark 5:21-end. We pray for all attending our services today and all worshipping throughout the diocese. We pray for all to be ordained deacon and those to be ordained priest today in Manchester cathedral; we pray for their families and their training incumbents and parishes.

Mon July 2nd - We pray for all with new babies, all women who are pregnant and all involved in the care of women and their babies through pregnancy, birth and afterwards. We pray for those in parts of the world where access to such care is difficult or expensive.

Tue July 3rd - We pray for all who are employed in Chorlton and businesses in Chorlton.

Wed July 4th – In the aftermath of recent stories about abuse by development agencies we pray that pledges are honoured, to create a more modern, responsible and accountable system. We pray for all who have been abused and those helping them to overcome trauma and rebuild their lives.

Thu July 5th - We pray for all the young people who have been undertaking exams, that they find direction for their future and a chance for fun and relaxation.

We pray for all involved in exam marking and assessment, for their diligence and hard work; we pray that they too find time for relaxation afterwards.

Fri July 6th - We pray for the Kasai region of the Democratic Republic of Congo, experiencing one of the worst crises in its history. Through the conflict between the army and the Kamuina Nsapu militia group, 1.7 million have been forced to flee their homes. We pray for Christian Aid partners helping the most vulnerable people, distributing garden kits and tools and providing protection services for those affected by or at risk of sexual violence.

Sat July 7th – We pray for all involved in law and legal services. We pray for a just society, where everyone has access to legal services. We pray for all parts of the world where corruption undermines the fairness of trials and decision making. We pray for those caught up in destructive practices in our own country, and all organisations trying to create a more just society for everyone. We pray for charities like Amnesty International, highlighting injustice and torture.

Mon July 9th – We give thanks for those who entertain us with laughter and fun through comedy. We pray for them and give thanks for the gifts of laughter and humour.

Tue July 10th Eternal God, the light of the minds that know you, the joy of the hearts that love you, and the strength of the wills that serve you: grant us so to know you that we may truly love you, so to love you that we may truly serve you, whose service is perfect freedom; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen Wed July 11th - We pray for the (approx.) two million people displaced in Nigeria due to ongoing terrorist action. We pray for Christian Aid workers and partners offering life-giving support both to displaced people and their hosts.

Thu July 12th – We pray for our Beer festival committee, giving thanks for their hard work and effort, their energy and enthusiasm.

Fri July 13th - We pray for all the volunteers and members of CAMRA who enable us to hold the beer festival. We pray for all who will attend the beer festival, for all who make use of the space in church for reflection or prayer. We pray for an enjoyable and successful weekend.

Sat July 14th - Emmeline Pankhurst Day. We remember all who campaigned for women in Britain to get the vote. We pray for women throughout the world, still not recognised as having the same rights as men. We pray for all groups who feel marginalised, all who live in fear because of discriminatory laws, culture or practice. We give thanks for those with the courage to stand up and speak out.

Sun July 15th - Amos 7:7-15; Ps 85:8-end; Ephesians 1:3-14; Mark 6:14-29 We pray for all attending our All-age service today. We pray for the children who attend Stepping stones, 8Up, Oranges and Lemons, Humpties, and other groups who meet in our halls.

Mon July 16th - We pray for all residential, care and nursing homes. We pray for all who work there: managers, carers, nurses, cooks, cleaners and those who maintain the buildings and grounds, and those who support the staff. We pray for skills, patience and compassion. We pray for all the residents and their families, that they feel affirmed, cared for, treated with dignity and respect.

I am giving you worship with all my life, I am giving you obedience with all my power, I am giving you praise with all my strength, I am giving you honour with all my speech.

Praise to the Father, praise to the Son, Praise to the Spirit, the Three in One. Wed July 18th – As we look towards the summer break, we pray for all families going on holiday; we pray for all families and individuals in need of a holiday, who won’t manage to get one for a variety of reasons. We pray that they nevertheless manage to get some rest and relaxation. We pray for all those summer clubs, teaching and caring for children during the school break, and for all those parents who will struggle to manage the break.

Thu July 19th –We pray for the communities displaced by violence in Myanmar’s Rakhine State and Rohingya refugees who have crossed the border into Bangladesh.

Fri July 20th – We pray for teachers and others working in schools and colleges as they break up for a well-needed rest and holiday. We pray for all those who will be looking towards a new position, new responsibilities, change in circumstances.

Sat July 21st - We pray for all living in poverty: in Manchester, in Britain and globally. We pray for those without jobs, without adequate shelter, without a sense of safety. We pray for the political will to provide homes and financial security.

Sun July 22nd – Song of Solomon 3:1-4; Ps 42:1-10; 2 Corinthians 5:14-17; John 20:1-2, 11-18 Mary Magdalene, 8th after Trinity. We give thanks for our beautiful church and all who work to maintain the work and worship at St. Clement’s and St. Barnabas.

Mon July 23rd– We pray for people in South Sudan, where conflict is driving worsening conditions. 40% of the population are now facing terrible food insecurity and 1.3 million children under 5 are at risk of severe malnutrition. We pray for all who supported the Christian Aid Christmas appeal, for all involved in supporting some of the most vulnerable and remote communities in the country.

Tue July 24th – As we look toward our Autumn programme at St. Clement’s we pray for all involved in the preparation of particular events and services. We pray that we are successful in reaching those in need and in maintaining a positive relationship with the local community.

Wed July 25th - We pray for all areas of the world most vulnerable to the effects of climate change. We pray that we learn to reduce, re-use and recycle more effectively, that we learn to share ideas about ways we can successfully make changes to the way we live to enable greater sustainability.

Thu July 26th - We pray for all working in holiday resorts across the world. We pray for good relations between locals and tourists, for a balance between the needs of both, for sensitive development taking into account the needs of all.

Fri July 27th O Lord our God, grant us grace to desire you with our whole heart; that so desiring, we may seek and find you; and so finding, may love you; and so finding, may hate those sins from which you have delivered us; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen Sat July 28th – We give thanks for our wild places in the world; we pray for those involved in managing these areas, sustaining the habitats for wildlife. We pray for all involved in the care of vulnerable and endangered species of animal or plant.

Amen Tue July 31st – We pray for all those people we’re no longer in contact with: friends, family members, ex-colleagues; those we have hurt or fallen out with, those we’ve neglected, those who feel they’ve been misunderstood or slighted, those who feel lost and those we’ve grown apart from. We hold them all to the light and love of God.

At various times over the next few weeks we will be asking for Volunteers - please get involved – it is fun, and your contribution will count towards the event’s success and the raising of essential income for the Church.

CHORLTON AND DIDSBURY FOODBANK From the beginning of April 2017 to the end of March 2018, the foodbank assisted 1510 people, 929 adults and 581 children with three day emergency food parcels. This is an approximate rise of 25% increase over the previous year.

As of 18th April 2018, we are a stand-alone charity with a license to be part of the Trussell Trust foodbank network. We have close links to St Clements, Chorlton Central Church, Christchurch West Didsbury and Barlow Moor Community Centre to name a few. Our registered charity number is 1177999, we like the ‘999’ at the end – an emergency service!?? Our registered address, and office are at St Barnabas.

We have been operating for over 4 years now, on Wednesdays at Christchurch Hall, West Didsbury, 11am – 1pm, and for over 3 years at St Barnabas, Chorlton, also 11am – 1pm. Since 12th June we have also been operating also from Chorlton Central Church on a Tuesday afternoon from 4.30pm – 6.30pm.

We have seen this increase in demand, and we have seen considerable donations, sometimes we get very close to running out of certain items, as has been highlighted recently, and we have then made some specific appeals. Thank you to all who have responded.

We have seen in the last year a change in key volunteer roles, with Katherine Osborne standing down and handing over to Tracy Mcnally the role of Volunteers Coordinator, the appointment of Rotamasters for Christchurch and St Barnabas in Sue Parish and Judith Foster, and a new key appointment has been Cathy Stopes as our Referrers Coordinator, to keep our 51 referral agencies up to date with things, and refreshed with vouchers to issue. AND to assist with running at Chorlton Central Church we have a previous volunteer at St Barnabas, Kate Grand, being our lead person at that Tuesday outlet.

On the Charity’s Trust Board, there have been 5 Trustees, and we have capacity for 9. At our recent AGM (14th June), 2 people indicated interested in becoming board members.

So if you are interested, there is still space for upto 2 more!

We must continue to give thanks for our dedicated operations manager, Shelley Hodges, who gives so much time freely to keep the foodbank running, and the many many unnamed, volunteers who assist in so many ways giving of their time and our supporters who give in donations, and other ways, too.

The Unofficial Archivist.

The following notice appeared in the July 1918 Parish magazine. “Due to the National Paper Shortage instructions have been issued to all Dioceses and Parishes that no Parish Magazines are to be issued until further notice. All notices of events and services are to be listed on a notice and affixed to the door of the Church and and be given verbally at the end of all services.�

This instruction was issued by the Archbishop of Canterbury.

On the 6th July 1918 we had a Garden Fete, apart from this, all other services and meetings took place as usual. We had 9 weddings in June and between 24th April and 23rd June where were 15 baptisms. On 23rd June there was Schools Sunday when Chorlton Band led the procession round the Green to the New Church where a services was held. Due to Whit Thursday (school holidays) being very wet the planned trip to the Longford Park for games was cancelled and re-arranged for August. It has been decided to start the St. Clements Lads Club in September and an appeal was made to parishioners ot only for donations of money but for equipment for ping-pong, bowls, draughts, chess, dominoes and a semi-billiard table.

The following names were added to the Roll Honour continued from the December 1917 magazine: J.Y.Wilkinson, C.B.Whittle, Regionald Dobson, Eric Burgoin and Bernard White, of whom it was announced that he had died o 7th June in Rouen Hopsital as the result of a gas attack. Chorlton Civic Society is a local organisation for everyone who lives or works in Chorlton. We have a variety of speakers and events. We meet at the Library usually on the 2nd Tuesday of the month It also organises Chorlton Traders Christmas Window Competition, deals with planning matters, including objections when necessary, it also has a Christmas Meal at a local restaurant. You don’t have to join any Committees unless you want to, nor do you have deliver newsletters. New members and visitors are always welcome.

St. Clements Fellowship Unfortunately, due to unforeseen family circumstances, Peter Hall was unable to come to the June meeting and as we were unable to get a replacement, a short talk on Perfume and Perfume Bottles was given by our Chairman. It was announced on the 12th July there would be a Pub Lunch at the Bowling Green Pub and that names would be taken over the next week or two. It was also announced that on 2nd August we would be going to Buxton and the transports would be leaving from church at 9.30. The cost would be £12.50 and a £5.00 deposit would be taken. Names were taken and members who were not at the meeting were contacted. We are having a Committee Meeting shortly to arrange the programme of 2018/2019.
