Principal’s Message
It is a time of mixed emotions, as we farewell our Year 12 students finishing their schooling journey of 13 years and, at the same time, we welcome our graduates of 2028. It is the cycle of school life and one of the privileges of being in education: working with young people as they surmount the challenges of adolescence, build resilience and selfregulation and step out into a world that wasn’t quite the same as when they started school.
We farewelled our Year 12 students with a week of celebration, including a BBQ lunch and joint activities with St Edmund’s College, House farewell ceremonies, a breakfast cooked by staff and a very special Farewell Assembly. We are proud of what our graduates of 2022 have accomplished over the past six years, including overcoming numerous obstacles brought on by Covid restrictions throughout their senior years. The girls progressed through their final days with a spirit of fun, solidarity and respect to staff, students, and the environment. We truly appreciate the extremely positive example they have set for their younger peers.
Our Year 10 students have shown their readiness for senior College through their preparedness for their exams and their final week in classes. We look forward to sharing a special time with them at their High Tea on Monday, and welcoming them back as seniors with a special Community Day on Tuesday 31 January, 2023.
With the flurry of activity for the upcoming Year 12 Graduation Mass and Awards, Year 12 Formal and the Years 7-11 Mass and Awards, it is timely to reflect on the challenges faced this year. As a community, we have faced limitations on school access to visitors, restricted opportunities for incursions and excursions, significant student and staff absences through illness, teacher shortages and some unsettled student behaviour. The staff of St Clare’s have shown their resilience in prioritising high-quality learning for our students, even when it was not their direct responsibility. In my first year as Principal of St Clare’s, I am so grateful to them and proud of what we, collectively, have achieved for the benefit of your daughters.
One unexpected role of Principal that I have very much enjoyed is leading alumni tours on weekends. Some groups are celebrating their decade reunions a little late, with the obvious restrictions of the last few years. To date, I have welcomed the Classes of 2010, 2012, 1981, 1990, 1992, and I look forward to the Class of 1972 in a week’s time. It is an opportunity for these graduates to share their oral history of the College, the everchanging (until now!) location of the senior common room, tales of the original Mrs Dickie, the various challenges that they recollect presenting to their teachers and Principals. It will be interesting to hear the recollections of the Class of 2022 at their 10 year reunion!
Until then, we will reflect and celebrate with our current students for all their achievements throughout this very challenging year.

STCC Visual Arts Exhibition
The End of Year Exhibition was held on Tuesday November 8 where the College opened its doors to family and friends for an afternoon of creative exploration. The new Learning Commons proved to be a wonderful venue to showcase our student work from Media Arts, Photography and Visual Arts. For the first time, artworks from Years 7 -12 were displayed together. This allowed our community to see how Junior and Senior students have developed their skills in innovation, problem solving and creative thinking.
Perhaps the evening is best summarised by our Year 12 Visual Arts students who missed out on the opportunity to exhibit at the end of 2021.
“My works were within the exhibition, and I walked around to view the art with my sister who also goes to St Clare’s. We seriously took our time to look at each piece as so many were truly lovely. The students that participate in St Clare’s art course have a love for the subject and it comes through from the care, creativity, and expression visible within their pieces. St Clare’s puts so much value on more than just practical expertise and on a true love for art and its philosophy.”
– Venetia Goodall, Year 12 Visual Art Student.
“It was an exhilarating experience as an art student seeing all of my peers’ work displayed in our final art exhibition. There were a variety of mediums explored within the exhibition such as oil paint, photography, ceramics, animation and many more which made the
exhibition all the more exciting to see the abilities and creativity of St Clare’s students expressed in art. I was there for the whole duration of the exhibition and saw many parents and visitors come to see the works displayed – it was nerve-wracking in the beginning but satisfying when I explained the meaning and processes behind my works to visitors and seeing their eventual understanding and appreciation. Overall, it was an amazing team-effort that I will surely miss – all the teachers, students and visitors to the exhibition played a special part in this end of year exhibition and fostered an environment so great and idiosyncratic to St Clare’s that one would surely savour the memory for years to come.“ – Simone Chitsinde, Year 12 Visual Art Student.
“The exhibition gave a whole new experience for both students and parents in the new Learning Commons. The open space invites people to explore the different topics across the student years. The creative ideas of all media, photography and visual art students was an exciting event for the end. Visitors viewed all different areas within the exhibition. On a personal note, although nervous about the audience’s reaction to my piece, I was looking forward to showing my work.” –Ryza Gloria, Year 12 Visual Art Student.

Celebration of Sports Night
The love of sport has never been as evident at St Clare’s College as we celebrated the achievements of 2022. Sport is so unique and powerful in nature as it brings unity, inclusivity, challenges your mindset, adds positively to your holistic health and brings a sense of belonging. We are very blessed to have students who love their sport and apply themselves diligently in the sporting arena which also transcends into their pride of wearing the STCC jersey.
We were very lucky to have not one but two elite athletes who are previous St Clare’s College studentsAli Bai and Sophie Gaughan who attended the night as our special guest speakers. We were inspired by Ali’s professional tennis career and listened attentively to her experience of playing Ash Barty. Sophie, Canberra Chill representative, motivated the crowd with her journey to the top of her game in the great sport of hockey. Ali and Sophie are prime examples of following their love and passion for their chosen sport and becoming successful athletes and continuing to inspire the next generation.
Thank you to the teachers who have supported our sporting program, without your assistance our students would not have this wonderful opportunity.
Our thank you extends to our College community, families, friends and external partnerships with many ACT sporting organisations who have been a part of our 2022 journey. It would be remiss of me not to thank our Sports Facilitator Mrs Louise Patton who has worked tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure that our students and our College are on the sporting pitch.

Remembrance Day
On 11 November, St Clare’s College paused to reflect on the service and sacrifice of the men and women who lost their lives while serving Australia and its allies in wars, conflicts and peacekeeping operations. Defence students participated in the Remembrance Day address, with the Remembrance Day prayer read by Sophie Harris, Alexandra Scheiffers and Grace Harris. The Ode was read by Carolyn Sisley, followed by The Last Post, a minute of silence and The Rouse. Thank you to these students for helping St Clare’s College commemorate this important date, marking the 104th anniversary of the Armistice that ended the First World War on 11 November 1918.
A number of commemorative activities were offered to students in the lead up to Remembrance Day. Students crafted lanterns, and wrote post cards of support to deployed personnel. Their messages were heartfelt and encouraging, wishing servicemen and servicewomen well, a Merry Christmas, and a safe return to their families. The postcards, sent through 39th Operational Support Battalion, will be widely disseminated to deployed personnel across the three services.
Students were also given the opportunity to reflect on the service of loved ones and Defence personnel by writing on a laminated poppy card. The poppies were placed by students in a garden bed of the Main Quad, and were a reminder of the connections many of us have, whether past or present, to Defence service. This was further explored through a wartime service display in the San Damiano Learning Commons on 11 November. Students were able to view wartime service uniform items, equipment and artefacts kindly loaned from the Australian War Memorial.
We will remember them.

Year 7 Languages
The Year 7 French classes created a visual piece around the characters of the film Zarafa (2012). Students viewed and discussed this French and Belgian animation film by Rémi Bezançon and Jean-Christophe Lie with music by Laurent Perez Del Mar.
Si tu es perdu(e), interroge le ciel ! If you are lost, consult the sky!
The above quote, is spoken several times in the film, and refers to not getting lost in the overwhelming situations of life - such as travelling through a dessert. It is about grabbing opportunities when they are presented to us.
Cecile Michels French Teacher
Year 7 and 8 Technologies
In Semester 2, the Year 7/8 DT students were asked to design and construct a lighting device that will emit a light using an LED strip with a USB attachment. As part of their design solutions they needed to consider the following points:
• Your user and their need for the light device.
• Positioning of light device (free standing/hanging).
• How light will transfer/reflect out of the device.
• The availability of materials which needs to reflect sustainability practices.
• Size of the device – no larger than A4 paper size.
• Concept of design using design elements and principals.

GETSet Day
On Wednesday 9 November, ten students across Year 7-10 participated in the GETSet Engineering and Computing at ANU. There were many engaging activities and thrilling experiences that the girls relished.
We kicked the day off with our first workshop called Laptop Music Coding. We had the opportunity to create harmonious music by coding with different instruments. After two hours of coding music, we headed to the kitchen area of Hannah Neumann building to have morning tea.
We then moved onto our second workshop called RoboGals at Birch Building. RoboGals gave us the opportunity to work together as a team to create robots, with the help of slideshows, to complete travelling through a maze. This workshop allowed the girls to showcase their abilities and interests through building robots. It was a collaborative experience, and everyone gave it a go.
After RoboGals we progressed with rotation activities. The first rotation activity we were given was creating custom print tote bags. Every girl customised a black tote bag with red and gold stickers and learnt a thing or two about 3D printing. The second activity was a tour around sections of the university that were based on student living including Bruce Hall (accommodation), libraries and food access, and relaxing and studying areas. We had an amazing tour of the campus thanks to our lovely tour guide who truly put on a show for us. We then finished off our day by heading back to Birch Building to gather gift bags, afternoon tea, and complete a feedback form. We all had a remarkable experience at ANU!

In the Classroom - HASS
Mrs Blackshaw's Year 10 Geography classes participated in creating Play Doh models of the coast. Students created a slide show of coastal features to show the formation and change of beach features e.g. cave, arch, bay and sea stack.
Students found this highly enjoyable and reinforced their knowledge on geographical formations.
10 November, four students were invited to attend the National History Challenge Presentation Ceremony along with their teachers Caroline Blackshaw and Karim Najjarine. The finalists included were Oliva Lee, Jorja Nicholson, Amelie Nettlefold and Klara Goddard. Klara and Amelie were ACT finalists and they also won a special category award in which they received a medallion, Gold Certificate and $400 prize. Well done to these students!
On the 31 October two Year 11 Psychology classes visited the National Zoo and Aquarium to coincide with course work. They had a guided tour concentrating on classical, operant conditioning and observational learning techniques on animal training and behaviour. Students loved seeing examples of animal training for example the cheetahs and their target training, and they loved holding a snake. They could see examples of animal behavior to reinforce what they have learnt in the classsroom.
Year 11 Psychology students participated in a brain dissection lesson lead by Mrs Elaina Cupitt. Students used science safety procedures to successfully dissect and identify the main parts of the brain. This was a fun and engaging activity in which students worked together collaboratively and related the brain of a sheep to learning about theory in class.

Shine Conference
On Friday 28 October, 500 Youth Ministry students in Years 9 and 10 throughout the Archdiocese including 44 Year 10 students from St Clare's College came together at Merici for the annual Shine conference. It was an amazing experience and a wonderful opportunity to connect with other CE schools and learn about what it means to be witnesses to our faith. The small group workshops equipped us with new skills and taught us new ways to connect with God for ourselves and for the support of others. Overall, it was a fantastic day.

Mission and Ministry
Year 9 Reflection Day
On Monday 7 November Year 9 Reflection Day focussed on our Liturgical theme for 2022 – “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart” and their Year group theme - “We rise up by lifting others and working as a team.”
We were fortunate to have a Guest Speaker from Your Choicez speak about the Power Gift of Friendship - why it matters, strategies for navigating emotions and how to help others in need. Then the second session focussed on building and maintaining respectful relationships and the power model of love using St Maximillian Kolbe as an example.
Throughout the day other activities centred on building relationships within our Pastoral Care groups and then looking outwardly as to how we can support our College charities. The girls unpacked and built flat pack children’s bikes for each charity with specific challenges in place and then designed and constructed Christmas Bags for Vinnies Joeys.
Our concluding liturgy emphasised our themes of working hard at all we do both individually and as a team.
Donations for our College Charities
A huge thank you to our College community who have donated non –perishable food, household items, gardening supplies, preloved clothing, books, toys, sporting equipment, baby accessories, knitted beanies, scarves, blankets and so much more. Our Charities are incredibly grateful to receive these items especially in the lead up to Christmas.
Mission and Ministry thank you afternoon tea and mass
On Friday 4 November students belonging to our Music Ministry, Social Justice and Youth Ministry teams came together to share afternoon tea, participate in team building exercises, reflect on the successes and challenges of the past year, thank our many amazing Team leaders and staff, farewell our Year 12 leaders and celebrate mass with Father Alex our College Chaplain. It was truly a wonderful afternoon of celebration.
Catholic Mission Activities
Throughout Week 3 our College community came together to celebrate Socktober, St Clare’s style. We held interhouse soccer competitions each lunchtime using soccer balls made of string, plastic bags and rubber bands, to highlight the way most kids play soccer in developing countries of the world. Matches were highly contested with great participation from students across Years 7 – 12. Our eventual winners were Alinda, 1 nil to Wareen. Thank you to Jessica our Social Justice Captain for her overall organisation, ably supported by Callie our Sports Captain, our House Captains and the Social Justice team.

Sport - ACT Touch Championships
After winning the Southside Championships on 19 October, the Year 9/10 Touch team progressed to the ACT Championships. There were only four teams present, the winners and runners up from both the North and South sides.
First the teams played three round games and then a semi 1 v 4 and 2 v 3, then the top two played off to see who would be named the ACT champions.
The results were very impressive. Game 1 – WON 5-2 against Lyneham High Game 2 – WON 7-6 against Mackillop Game 3 – WON 5-1 against Canberra High Semi-finals – WON 6-1 against Lyneham High St Clare’s went into the Grand final undefeated at this stage, not losing a game over both touch days and went into the finals as favourites It was a fantastic game – Mackillop scored first, followed with St Clare’s scoring two tries, then Mackillop scored two more and St Clare’s evened it up with another try. It was even at 3 tries each. Unfortunately, just before the final bell sounded Mackillop scored again.
There was no time left to score and so St Clare’s came away with a second place or runners up. The final score was 4 - 3.
The team-work was definitely on display in their 26 tries for and had only 13 tries scored against them throughout the day. Eden Morrisey was the top try scorer with an impressive 10 tries.
We are very proud of the effort and training that the team members committed to before the championships. We look forward to beating them next year. The team members were: Brea Rodgers, Imojean Vea, Eden Morrisey, Bonnie Wilder, Hannah Miller, Ava Brassil, Ella Norton, Amelia Norton, Kayley Maguire, Sophie Walker, Ruby Ashton and Lauren Gilbert.
The player’s player was Eden Morrisey, the MVP was Amelia Norton and the Coach’s award goes to Kayley Maguire. Thanks to Mr Adam Buck who coached the team on the day.

CAL will again run a Japanese summer school in January 2023 for students who wish to prepare for commencement in senior secondary Japanese studies at Continuing level. The summer school will be for those who have completed prior study (in or out of school), who are eligible for Continuing Japanese, and who would like to do a bridging program in the holidays to ensure they are ready for the senior secondary course. The summer school program will be designed to improve students’ confidence and mastery in areas normally covered through the Australian Curriculum in Years 9-10.
The summer school will be open to any interested students, whether they intend ongoing studies in their day school or with CAL. It will take place in the 2nd to 4th weeks of January, with 3 hours online plus 2 hours of homework each week for a total of 15 programmed hours. As an online program, it will not be required that participating students are in Canberra at the time. The cost will be $250 per student. Details will be advertised on CAL website and CAL’s Facebook page
CAL will also run a summer school for Korean in January 2023.

Franchesca Isla Class of 2011
I was the first Faith and Community leader at St Clare’s College. Since Graduating I completed a Bachelor of Science in Psychology with a major in Counselling studies at the University of Canberra, and a Master of Social Work at the University of South Australia.
I have spent time working in drug addiction and domestic violence; this professional development has included understanding trauma, mental health first aid, personality disorders, and child-safe environments.
I have facilitated presentations on themes surrounding healthy relationships and positive body image for schools in Canberra, conducted education on bullying with Hope Assistance Local Tradies, and spoken about creating safe and empowering public spaces for women and girls for The Canberra Gals Network. I also worked for Australia’s leading bullying prevention charity, Bully Zero, and founded its recently developed blog site, Brave, which allows people the opportunity to unpack, reflect, and share insight into their experiences with bullying.
My passion is the arts and I have exhibited my artwork at Art, Not Apart, and published several creative writing pieces on themes of change, challenge, grief, and healing. I collaborated with organisations such as the Catholic Voice, The Stop Campaign, and Verse Magazine.
In honour of the birth of my two children, I donated 1,000 handmade origami cranes to the Women’s and Children’s Hospital Foundation, as well as 1,000 more to the Canberra Hospital Foundation. My most loved phrase is: ‘to will the good of others’ - and have spent my life aiming to do just that.
Contributions are greatly welcomed from past students. Send 300 words plus a current image to media@stcc.act.edu.au
