Notes from the Pastor: Notas del Párroco:
Dear Parishioners,
“It is good that we are here” were the words of St. Peter at the top of Mount Tabor in the Gospel for this weekend’s Feast of the Transfiguration. It certainly must have been good to be there with Jesus, Moses and Elijah, but this weekend I think it is fair to say that your new priests, Fr. Chris Schroeder, Fr. George Staley and myself, all echo that sentiment as we begin this new assignment. All three of us are excited to be here and to meet all of you and pray with you. But before I say any more, please allow me to introduce myself to you.
My name is Fr. Jim Theby. I was ordained a priest in 2008, and this is my fourth assignment as a priest. I was previously an associate pastor at Assumption in O’Fallon and St. Clare of Assisi in Ellisville before serving as pastor of Our Lady of Lourdes in Washington for the past nine years. I love being a parish priest and am excited to be your pastor. Personally, I grew up the oldest of four in Chesterfield and attended Incarnate Word Elementary School and DeSmet Jesuit High School before seminary. You will, of course, learn much more about me over time, but I’d like to mention one thing this weekend that is perhaps the thing I want most: I want to be with Jesus, much like Peter, James and John were in the Gospel this weekend, and I want you to be with Jesus.
There is quite a bit of change here and throughout the Archdiocese, but my hope is that we don’t lose our focus on being with Jesus. In the days, weeks and months ahead, while we are coming to grips with how to share priests between parishes here in St. Charles and the implementation of All Things New, let us keep our eyes and hearts on Jesus. He will lead us. He will be our guide.
I ask you to keep us priests in your prayers and we promise to pray for you.
Have a blessed week!
Fr. Jim Theby
Estimados feligreses,
P. Jim Theby

Dear Borromeo Family,
It has been a pleasure to serve you at this parish in so many capacities over the past four and a half years. I am grateful for the relationships I’ve formed and the many ways I have seen God through each of you. But just as I felt God call me to Borromeo, I now feel him calling me to serve him in another way. Please be patient with Fr. Theby as he redistributes my job duties, and may God be with each and every one of you. - Tara
Querida Familia Borromeo,
- Tara

Background on the Gospel, July 30 from Loyola Press “Sunday Connection”
Today’s liturgy invites us to celebrate the feast of the Transfiguration of the Lord. This feast calls to our attention the importance of this event in Jesus’s life, further affirmed by its report in each of the Synoptic Gospels: Matthew, Mark, and Luke. In Cycle A, the reading for this feast is taken from the Gospel of Matthew. The Transfiguration occurs after Peter confesses his belief that Jesus is the Messiah and after Jesus predicts his Passion. In each of these Gospels, a discussion of the cost of discipleship precedes the Transfiguration.
In each Gospel, Jesus takes three of his disciples—Peter, James, and John—to a high mountain. While they are there, Elijah and Moses appear and converse with Jesus. Elijah and Moses are both significant figures in the history of Israel.
Moses led the Israelites out of slavery in Egypt and received from Yahweh the Ten Commandments. Moses represents the Law, which guides the lives of the Jewish people. Elijah is one of the most important prophets of Israel who helped the Israelites stay faithful to Yahweh, and some believed that Elijah’s return would signal the coming of the Messiah for the Jewish people. The appearance of these two figures from Israel’s history indicated Jesus’s continuity with the Law and the prophets. They also reveal that Jesus is the fulfillment of all that was promised to the people of Israel.
Upon witnessing Jesus’s Transfiguration and seeing Jesus with Elijah and Moses, an awestruck Peter offered to construct three tents for them when a voice from Heaven affirms that Jesus is “my beloved Son” and commands the disciples to listen to him.
In each of the reports of the Transfiguration, Jesus instructed the disciples to keep secret what they had seen until after “the Son of Man has been raised from the dead.” Until they witnessed Jesus’ Passion and Death, the disciples could not possibly understand what he meant by being “raised from the dead.”
We, however, have the benefit of hindsight. In our hearing of the Transfiguration Gospel, we see an anticipation of Jesus’ Resurrection, a foreshadowing of Christ’s glory in Heaven, and the promise of our own resurrection.
Reflection Questions of the Week
First Reading:
In a vision, the prophet Daniel sees the heavenly throne of God and the coming kingdom of God represented by a human figure, a “son of man.” The vision speaks to God’s everlasting love and ultimate control of the world. Why do you think God reveals Himself in visions?
Second Reading:
Peter speaks of his eyewitness to the majesty of Jesus Christ. How might you witness to family or friends this week your beliefs about Jesus?
Gospel:
The transfiguration reveals Jesus’s divinity to Peter, James, and John, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him.” What would you say is the most important lesson from Jesus that we should listen to?

Notes from St. Vincent de Paul
In the Gospel, the Lord’s voice says:,
“This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him.” The disciples were afraid, but Jesus came and touched them, saying, “Rise, and do not be afraid.” Know that in making your gift to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul you are listening to Christ, and helping others not to be afraid.
Respect Life Corner
“Every life is sacred! Let us go forward with the culture of life to counter the logic of waste and the declining birth rate; let us be close and together let us pray for the babies who are threatened by the termination of pregnancy, as well as for the people who are at the end of life — every life is sacred! — so that no one may be left alone and that love may defend the meaning of life. Let us recall the words of Mother Teresa: ‘Life is beautiful, admire it; life is life, defend it!,’ be it a baby who is about to be born, or a person who is close to death: every life is sacred!” – Pope Francis, Message for Day of Life, Feb. 5, 2017
