The Major Our nationally recognized programs prepare you for teaching licensure in three areas: Elementary K–6, Secondary 5–12, and Kindergarten through grade 12 in Minnesota and most other states. Pre-primary and middle school endorsements can be added to a K–6 license.

The Classes Our comprehensive coursework will empower you with the knowledge and skills necessary to provide the best educational experience for kids of all ages. As an education major, you will take classes in curriculum development, science, mathematics, social studies, physical education, psychology, and relationship techniques. As early as your junior year, you will gain hands-on classroom experience student teaching a full semester at a school in the metro area.

The Career Advantage St. Kate’s was the first University in the nation to require all elementary education majors to complete a science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) certificate before receiving their teaching licensure. Upon completion of the STEM certification, you will be prepared to not only provide STEM instruction, but to help facilitate wider use of integrated STEM curriculum within schools, districts, and other educational settings.

We also incorporate more fieldwork than most teacher-preparation programs, so you’ll graduate with more impressive, marketable skills. In fact, St. Kate’s grads lead a significant number of the 91 schools in the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis, from small K-8 and K-12 programs to larger college-prep institutions like Benilde-St. Margaret’s.

Mission-Driven Coursework The elementary education major offers coursework with particular emphasis on social justice and effectively serving underrepresented populations.

Addressing the achievement gap and inequities in K-12 schools is essential to the mission of social justice for educators. St. Catherine University teacher candidates will be challenged throughout the program to reflect upon ways they can implement culturally sustaining teaching practices and disrupt inequities in school systems and classrooms.
