2024 Impact of Giving

IMPACT OF GIVING 2024

The Unique Potential of the Girl

As I write this article regarding the philanthropic support from amongst the St Catherine’s School community, it is clear to me that the power of education is both known and felt. Indeed, we have evidential proof throughout our history that when a girl is educated, she transforms her community, her country, and the world. Such transformative power is fortified when underpinned by the generosity of our School community.

In 2024, we saw a groundswell of support for our new Music School; a fundraising campaign that will enhance the unique potential of each student, now and into the future. The goal to raise $5 million is as daring as it is accessible: a wave of philanthropy rippled amongst our parents and alumnae and saw us swiftly reach 20% of that target. These campaigns and building projects are more than just the construction of beautiful facilities; they represent the profound, joyful experience

of those who have trod the halls of St Catherine’s, juxtaposed against the hopes and dreams of our current and future cohorts.

During the year, scholarships and bequests continued to be a core part of the School’s philanthropic plan, leaving a legacy that reached far beyond financial support. Each gift told the story of a person whose stewardship gave another the chance to learn, grow, and lead. Such opportunities are life-changing for the recipients:

Supporting a Future Full of Music

In 2024, St Catherine’s School proudly launched the silent phase of the Music Matters capital campaign, an ambitious and inspiring fundraising initiative with a goal to raise $5 million towards the construction of a new, purpose-built Music School. This transformative project is more than a building; it is a bold investment in the creative and cultural life of the School, a place where every student can discover, develop, and delight in the power of music.

The new Music School will be designed to meet the dynamic needs of a contemporary music education, offering exceptional spaces for individual tuition, ensemble rehearsal, and collaborative performance. These state-of-the-art facilities will nurture a culture of musical excellence, foster a sense of belonging, and provide opportunities for students of all ages and abilities to grow in confidence and creativity. With dedicated rehearsal rooms,

ensemble studios, and acoustic environments that support both practice and performance, the new Music School will be a home for inspiration and innovation.

Already, the campaign has been met with heartfelt generosity from those who recognise the transformative role that music plays in education and in life. Music Matters is not simply about bricks and mortar; it is about creating opportunities,

they offer an education of course, but on a deeper level, they foster a confidence which leads to a future filled with possibility. For the donors, giving is a way to make a lasting difference, one that echoes through every achievement, every graduation, and every life changed by their generosity.

This Impact of Giving Report honours those who have shared their love of St Catherine’s in meaningful and tangible ways. It has been inspiring for me, as

Principal, to witness the support from our community. These thoughtful contributions send a powerful message: investing in girls’ futures invests in a better world for us all.

Nil Magnum Nisi Bonum –‘Nothing is Great, Unless it is Good’.

to learn an instrument, to perform on stage, to express emotion through sound, and to belong to something bigger than oneself.

This campaign represents the next chapter in St Catherine’s proud legacy of excellence in the arts and our enduring belief in the unique potential of every girl. We thank those who have already given significantly to help us reach our first milestone of $1 million and warmly invite our

broader community to join us in supporting this vision to life. Together, we can ensure that St Catherine’s continues to be a place where every girl can find her voice and share it with the world.

Music Matters ST CATHERINE’S MUSIC SCHOOL

The new St Catherine’s Music School will provide an intentional learning environment designed to elevate personal growth, nurture lifelong potential, and inspire creativity through the universal language of music.

Major capital campaigns allows the School to undertake transformative projects, such as the current Music Matters campaign and redevelopment of the Wintergarden and Frank Osborn buildings, to create inspiring, futurefocused environments where students can thrive. These ambitious initiatives are made possible through the generosity of our philanthropic community.

By investing in key projects and supporting innovative learning programs, the St Catherine’s Foundation ensures our students have access to exceptional opportunities, empowering them to thrive, and shaping the future of education at St Catherine’s. Foundation Membership begins with gifts of $10,000, with elevated

membership levels progressing to Benefactor and Patron status which sit within the Jeanie Hood Society.

One-off donations and pledges, whether made upfront or over time, to the St Catherine’s School Building Fund are tax-deductible. These gifts play a vital role in enhancing teaching and learning outcomes by supporting the development of exceptional facilities for our students and staff.

Personal approaches to our wider School community continue. Donors will collectively help to deliver key elements of the Music Matters campaign. Members of our community interested in capital support or naming opportunities, either in the Music School spaces (i.e., Rehearsal Rooms, individual tuition studios) or the Wintergarden and Frank Osborn redevelopments are warmly invited to contact the Foundation to explore how they can be involved.

A Legacy of Generosity & Vision

Wilson Lai and Anita Wong, Trustee Foundation Members and long-standing supporters of St Catherine’s, have previously contributed to major building campaigns, including The Jamie & Rebecca Gray Theatre and the Sports Centre project, and extended their generosity to the Hardship Fund during Covid. Most recently, they pledged a significant gift to the Music Matters campaign, naming the Recording Studio in honour of their daughter Alicia’s (Year 8) grandparents, lifelong philanthropists with a deep commitment to education.

Through their enduring commitment, Wilson and Anita have woven their family’s story into the fabric of St Catherine’s, through a legacy that will inspire and benefit our community for many years to come. Their gift enriches our Music School while honouring a proud family tradition of generosity, opening doors for generations of students to discover, create, and share the joy of music.

The Melbourne Foundation Scholarships

Since 2006, The Melbourne Foundation has been committed to providing lifechanging educational opportunities for Australian children from financially disadvantaged backgrounds. Guided by the belief that education is the most powerful way to open doors and create opportunity, The Melbourne Foundation offers fully funded scholarships for secondary school students to attend leading independent schools in Melbourne.

St Catherine’s shares this commitment, and for over a decade, generous donor syndicates from our community have helped fund these scholarships, empowering talented and motivated students to thrive at the School. This collaboration has transformed lives, not only of the scholarship recipients, but also of the broader community they go on to enrich.

Recipients are selected through a rigorous process to ensure that each student will both benefit from, and contribute to, the opportunities at St Catherine’s.

If you wish to become an annual scholarship supporter and be a part of this significant program, please contact Advancement Manager, Ms Kathy Hines.

Melbourne Foundation Scholarship Recipient

MISS COCO BUTTERFIELD (’24)

How has receiving the scholarship to St Catherine’s influenced your education, opportunities, or future goals?

Receiving the scholarship to St Catherine’s was truly life changing. It opened the door to an education that not only challenged me academically but nurtured me as a musician and individual. I was surrounded by staff and mentors who are experts in their fields, and more than that were eager to help me succeed and achieve my goals. Their encouragement gave me the confidence to pursue a future in music. The opportunities I was given, especially as a performer and music leader, helped shape my aspirations and inspired me to take my love for the violin seriously. Without the scholarship, I would not be where I am today.

What has a St Catherine’s scholarship made possible for you that might not have been possible otherwise?

The scholarship made it possible for me to be part of a community that encouraged excellence, creativity, and a supportive environment in which I was able to develop as a violinist and a leader.

It gave me access to one-on-one mentorship, ensemble and solo performance opportunities, and the priceless experience of playing a fine instrument through the Shelmerdine Violin Scholarship, something that may not have been possible otherwise.

What would you like the donors who made this scholarship possible to know about its impact on your life?

To the donors who made this scholarship possible: thank you, sincerely. Their generosity has had an extraordinary impact on my life, not just during my time at St Catherine’s, but in the years to come. Because of their support, I was able to grow as a musician, leader, and person, and discover the path I truly wanted to take.

How has your education at St Catherine’s shaped your academic and personal growth, and influenced you both as a musician and as a person?

St Catherine’s shaped me in more ways than I could have imagined. Academically, I was surrounded by passionate teachers who pushed me to strive for excellence, personally, I found a community that celebrated individuality and growth. And musically, it was where I was able to grow in confidence, through rehearsals, concerts, and the daily encouragement of the music staff. Their guidance helped me to not only refine my technique but to express myself through music. Additionally, the School’s wide variety of ensembles on offer provided me with a wellrounded appreciation for music, which was supported by the inclusive and encouraging environment that these ensembles fostered. The values I learned at St Catherine’s have carried into every part of my life and continue to guide me outside of the Heyington gates.

How did receiving the Shelmerdine Violin Scholarship shape your musical journey at St Catherine’s, and what have been the most memorable musical opportunities you’ve experienced during your time here?

Receiving the Shelmerdine Violin Scholarship was one of the most formative experiences of my time at St Catherine’s. Playing the Praga Violin brought out a new level of depth and expression in my playing, and I felt both inspired and deeply responsible to rise to the instrument’s potential. During my time at St Catherine’s, I was fortunate to have had numerous opportunities to perform and share my love for music, such as the annual Concerto Concert, Jazz Night and Gala. One performance I will always remember was playing at the Mrs Pamela Warender’s 100th Birthday Celebration, it felt like a full-circle moment, where I could give back by sharing the music I’d been supported to grow.

Looking ahead, how do you hope to apply what you’ve learned at St Catherine’s in your next chapter? What are your next steps, and how do you hope to continue your musical journey beyond St Catherine’s?

This year, I’m studying a Bachelor of Music, a decision that was shaped entirely by my time at St Catherine’s. The belief that was shown in me by my teachers, and the joy I found in performing, made me realise the opportunities that music could offer in my future. I hope to continue performing, learning, and connecting with others through music, and I carry everything I learned at St Catherine’s with me into this next chapter. I am excited to keep growing as a musician and will always hold a deep sense of gratitude for the journey and people that made this possible for me. I would like to especially thank the teachers and instrumental tutors at St Catherine’s for their years of support and encouragement.

Every Note, a Gift. Every Gift, a Legacy.

In 2024, we saw a powerful groundswell of commitment and enthusiasm for the Music Matters capital campaign. The generosity of our community has powerfully demonstrated the strength of collective action and a shared vision. We have already raised 20% of our ambitious $5 million target, a strong start that reflects our community’s deep passion for music and its vital role in a St Catherine’s education. Most inspiring has been the active participation behind these early gifts, with each contribution adding meaningful momentum to this landmark project.

“Philanthropy breathes life into music education; it turns classrooms into stages, lessons into passions, and students into empowered storytellers.”

As construction progresses, every donation is literally helping to build a space where talent will flourish, passion will be nurtured, and future generations will be inspired. To bring this transformative project to life, we n ow need the collective support of our entire community. Every gift, no matter the size, brings us closer to realising the vision of a vibrant Music School that will serve current and future generations of St Catherine’s students.

This is the moment for us all to unite in our commitment to provide an exceptional space for creativity, collaboration, and musical growth.

To our generous Music Matters donors in 2024, thank you. Your belief in the transformative power of education continues to shape the future of St Catherine’s.

Introducing New Foundation Members

DAVID

JIANG & YUQI WU

What were the key factors that influenced your decision to choose St Catherine’s for Amber?

We chose St Catherine’s for Amber because of its outstanding academic reputation, vibrant arts program, and the warm, supportive environment we felt from the very first visit. The School’s values align closely with our own, and we believed Amber would be both challenged and nurtured here.

What inspired you to support the St Catherine’s School Foundation and the Music School campaign?

Supporting the St Catherine’s School Foundation and the Music School campaign was a natural decision for us. Music builds confidence, discipline, and creativity, and we want to help ensure these opportunities are available for all students, now and in the future.

Why do you believe the act of giving is important in a school community?

We believe giving is essential in a school community because it strengthens connections and encourages a shared sense of responsibility. When families contribute, they help create opportunities that go beyond what tuition alone can provide.

What aspirations do you have for Amber’s growth, experiences, and achievements during her time at St Catherine’s?

Our aspiration for Amber is that she grows into a confident, compassionate

young woman, eager to learn, resilient in the face of challenges, and ready to make a positive impact in the world.

What hopes do you hold for St Catherine’s as a community, and how do you envision your daughter benefiting from her education here in the coming years?

We hope St Catherine’s continues to balance academic excellence with student wellbeing, providing an environment where each girl can explore her passions and fulfil her potential. We believe Amber will benefit from the school’s holistic approach to education, which values both achievement and character.

In your experience so far, what do you think makes St Catherine’s unique or sets it apart from other schools?

What sets St Catherine’s apart is its personal touch, the way it truly knows and supports each girl.

Tell us something about you or your family that might surprise us, special interests, favourite places, shared experiences, or personal achievements.

As a family, we love travelling, skiing, snowboarding and immersing ourselves in different cultures.
