Message from the Head of Upper School Dear Parents, Guardians, Students and Staff, We are delighted that at long last that we are able to publish a newsletter that in part features real live students in the school itself. What a difference it makes! The Year 11 and 12 students have the run of the building for themselves and have enjoyed greatly seeing old friends and their teachers. After a week of adjustment, this second pre-Easter week will see the students have to refocus on their studies as the summer term will be short, but intense with all sorts of activities and assessments waiting. Students in Years 7 to 10 are still working online, but we sincerely hope that they will be allowed back on May 10th. The twice weekly self-testing protocol adds a level of confidence and as long as the school community follows the guidelines and best practices then we should end the school year with a sense of normality returning. Before I sign off and allow you the chance to enjoy the newsletter at you leisure, there are a couple of other announcements to make. Firstly, the happy news that Mrs Kostika (Mathematics) and Dr Reiman (Science) yesterday evening celebrated the birth of their second daughter. Both mother and baby are doing well and we send them our congratulations and best wishes. And finally a reminder that this Friday is a full school day – as is traditional we reserve half days for the final day before Christmas and summer. Everyone is happy to have our Year 11 & 12 students back in school! Year 11 English class on the Roof! “We were very happy to have our Yr. 11’s back in PSHCE and they were keen to learn some exam revision techniques. However, we don’t think they were ready to create group rap songs for English devices, freeze frames of Science terms or charades for Maths equations. It was wonderful to hear the live sound of whole class laughter again and we can’t wait for the other year groups to return!” Thank you, Mrs Voutsadakis
Year 12 Biology class on the Roof! Year 12 HL Biology students have recently completed the topic of Evolution. The class moved up to our wonderful roof, where the students used and constructed dichotomous keys on frogs, lizards and a couple of imaginary species for fun. Thank you, Mr Tasopoulos
GREEK DEPARTMENT NEWS ONLINE STUDENTS’ CONFERENCE ON LITERATURE «Η ΛΟΓΟΤΕΧΝΙΑ ΑΛΛΙΩΣ» On the 14th and 15th of April, seven IB1 students participated in the online students’ conference on literature entitled «Η λογοτεχνία αλλιώς». The conference was organised by the Zografeion Lykeion in Constantinople and the Mandoulides schools in Thessaloniki, and under the auspices of Orthodox Patriarch Bartholomeus. The importance, the content and the appeal of the event was announced on the TV news bulletin which you can see in the following link. Our IB1 students took part in various discussions of the conference and made a strong impression with their wellthought and original presentations. Celebrating Pi Day March 14th What Does π Sound Like? For my project, I decided to make a small song with the numbers of π, and to do this, I used an online beat maker and used it as sort of a bar chart to create different sounds, representing each number. Virtual Alumni University & Careers Fair On Thursday 15th of April we held our first Virtual Alumni University & Careers Fair. We were so pleased to see our community come together with over 40 alumni speakers who shared their experience about their university and/or careers paths from all over the world. Our current students were able to speak to someone who had been where they are going, providing them with a great insight. In the words of our students: "It was inspiring to hear, first hand, from the experienced alumni. My largest takeaway was the difference in student life at each university; I narrowed down my list of universities immensely. I can safely say I am less stressed about the application process. Hopefully we can make this an annual event!" Amalia K "I really enjoyed the alumni event. I felt as though it was the perfect mix of fun and information. I believe it was a great educational experience that helped me understand what I want to take away from my university experience." Melia P "The Alumni Fair was an extremely helpful experience. The fact that these were alumni from StCats meant that it was easier for students to understand the application process to universities or specific industries with the same background as these alumni. Personally, it meant that I could learn what to include/exclude from personal statements and what each university was looking for and how each of these universities' student life differed." Easter Charity Collection for Babies A collection of diapers and dry milk for babies is underway for the refugees for Easter. A donation box will be available at the North & South entrance doors into the Upper School. Students can drop items off as they arrive to school in the morning. Details: Diapers of any size - particularly need size 4-5 Dry milk powders for babies. Contact Upper School administrators if you have any further questions. Thank you kindly in advance!
