Welcome to The Impact of Giving Report
This year the girls have been enjoying the fruits of the ‘Create the Future’ Campaign effort. The collective generosity of St Catherine's community of parents, alumnae, staff, governors and friends has afforded them a whole host of learning opportunities and enhanced their St Cat’s experience. Thank you.
The WonderLab, opened in the Prep School in 2018, has helped shape scientific aspirations and, following the Award of the Primary Science Quality Mark in 2021, we were shortlisted for the Independent Prep School of the Year Award for science teaching.
In The 6, opened in March 2021, young leaders masterminded the incredible musical Annie and supported each other in their A Level revision, aided by toast and conversation in the Common Room. The shared space of the U6 and L6 community has helped the L6 ‘see’ the value of their upcoming prefect leadership roles and inspired much discussion around university courses and destinations.
In The Art & MakerSpace, opened in September 2022, we saw Year 6 and The Royal Grammar School Prep School boys join forces for Culinary Arts classes creating spicy cous-cous, and girls from Year 7 to the Sixth Form enjoying Print Making Club. Our Sixth formers completed the build of the Westfield 7 kit car in their Engineering, Design & Technology course and enthusiastically hosted the St Cat’s CAR Club at Goodwood. Thank you to those parents who have joined as Founder Members.
The CATalyst, our final project to complete the Create the Future vision, requires significant financial resources of c.14m. The Governors have chosen a phased approach (taking into account our country’s current challenging economic outlook) and the plan is to begin in the Summer of 2024 prioritising the flagship ‘CATalyst Community Lab’ to be used by all Senior girls and for our Science outreach programme. We will also be relocating and upgrading our Drama Studio in School Block, so for those parents who share a passion for the performing arts please do read about our Campaign on p.11 and consider your support.
I hope that you will enjoy reading this overview of the past year and might consider joining us on our journey to Create the Future.

Here’s to strong women. May we know them. May we be them. May we raise them.
There is no shortage of ambition and creativity at St Catherine’s and donations to the School this year of £83,000 have helped shape the futures of the strong young women of tomorrow. Thank you for your kindness, your generosity and your insight: with opportunity comes aspiration.
This year we won the Lacrosse ‘triple’ – our 1st, 2nd and 3rd teams were all National Schools Lacrosse champions! Our young scientists in the Prep School have been trying to establish which teacher’s pen was used to write a suspicious note using chromatography, and our Sixth Formers, in conjunction with the John Locke Institute, have been debating the ethics of wealth distribution. Your donations are helping girls build their selfconfidence, achieve their ambitions and succeed in life. You are raising strong women!
In the upcoming academic year our focus will be the first phase of The CATalyst and the creation of the Community Lab. You’ll find the plans on p.8. Many families and alumnae have generously given to the St Catherine’s Development Fund to Create the Future and The CATalyst. Their gifts will pay for the creation of The CATalyst Community Lab which we aim to open in the Summer of 2025. I look forward to inviting supporters and anyone who’d like to explore their support to don a lab coat and goggles and join us for the inaugural experiments. There is talk of dissecting a cuttlefish and exploring how they change colour and camouflage themselves through controlling their chromatophores.
Do you remember your part in your school plays? In formative roles perhaps as Joseph, a shepherd or the donkey, to senior school challenges tackling Shakespeare, Blood Brothers or Tennessee Williams? Our experience of being on the stage, taking on another’s character, expressing emotions and working collaboratively as a cast, are both powerful and memorable.
Please do consider if you might 'Play your Part' to help create a new space for the dramatic arts in School. You can find more more on p.11.
“
I am proud to say that I am a supporter of the School’s Create the Future campaign. I can not think of a better way to help my children, your children, and the thousands of other children who will follow in their footsteps at St Catherine’s to discover the passions that will inspire them for the rest of their lives. ”
Pippa Carte Development DirectorOur Community of Support
Your support shapes and enriches St Catherine’s Philanthropy is at the heart of St Catherine’s and it is your collective generosity which allows us to carry on this tradition. From the Chapel, built in 1893, a place for peaceful reflection, to the Anniversary Halls, home to joyful performances and sporting triumphs since it opened in 2011. From The WonderLab in the Prep School where girls have been taking their first steps in scientific exploration since 2017 to The Art & MakerSpace where girls express their creativity and imagination. We owe a debt of gratitude to our School community for their unwavering support. Thank you.
We were delighted to welcome families, alumnae and friends of the School for a wealth of events and gatherings. In 2022-23, over 700 parents, alumnae and friends have joined us for an Association event or activity. We would also like to thank all those who have given their time so generously to the St Catherine's community. Your support in offering careers connections, inspirational talks and sector specific advice is invaluable in inspiring the next generation of St Catherine's girls. Thank you all for your enthusiasm and committed support.

Bright Futures
Bright Futures Bursary Programme
At St Catherine’s we are proud of our commitment to The Bright Futures Bursary Programme, which is our way of supporting girls who are financially disadvantaged but full of potential. Individual and collective generosity ensures that talented girls can gain an exemplary education and the confidence to believe that they can succeed in whatever they set their hearts and minds to. We are grateful for all pledges and gifts from former staff, alumnae and parents, that encourage the talents of the next generation of St Catherine’s girls.
Support Bright Futures
If you were at St Catherine’s or your daughter is currently enjoying the school, you can give another girl the chance to:
n be inspired by exceptional teachers
n find and develop her own interests
n believe in her own ability
n fulfil her potential.
Giving an education to a girl with real potential but without financial means:
n changes her life and her life chances
n creates a more diverse School community
n contributes to her long-term social mobility
n changes the world as educated women take their place in society.
Gifts from Wills
We remain indebted to the generous contributions of alumnae, staff and friends who have chosen to make a gift in their Will to secure the School’s future. This year Rosemary O’Brien sadly passed away.
Rosemary joined St Catherine’s in 1975 as a German teacher and nine years later became L6 resident Housemistress. She retired in 1991 but joined us regularly for Foundation Day, Carols by Candlelight and many other community events. In her honour, in memoriam gifts were made to the Bright Futures Bursary programme, marking her legacy to education. We are delighted to recognise gifts with the planting of trees. A tree adds further beauty to our spacious campus and also contributes to our ongoing Net Zero/Eco Strategy.
“When circumstances threatened my ability to continue my St Cat's education, the Bright Futures Bursary Programme was there to support me. It allowed me to have a sense of stability and consistency while my personal life endured unexpected changes - for that, I am truly grateful to have received the gift of fulfilling my potential at St Cat's.”

“I support the Bursary Fund so that St Catherine’s can help more girls have an outstanding educational experience”
Mr S, parent
“I am immensely grateful for the bursary funding that I received from U3 to U6, as my education at St Cat’s has helped me make dreams become a reality. I would love other children to be given the amazing opportunities that I got, that were made possible by my bursary.”
Olivia, Year of 2021, Reading Medicine at UCL
The CATalyst
“When I chose to study Physics at university, it was only because it was a subject I really enjoyed. If I were going around again, I’d make exactly the same choice, because Physics and the rest of the Sciences are going to lead the big developments of the future. They will shape our lives and we owe it to our children to ensure that they are fully geared up for it.”

Invest in women scientists
We are delighted that we are now over half way to achieving our aim of raising £3m from the School Community to contribute to the £23.5m overarching investment by the School in Create The Future. Our community has contributed a wonderful £1.7m to date and we have completed three of the four projects within our vision. Your generosity, in addition to loan finance, is driving the School forward. Thank you.
The CATalyst Phase 1
The CATalyst will be an inspirational space designed to meet the aspirations of our bright girls to become the STEM leaders of the future: tomorrow’s physicists, coders, geneticists and engineers. The CATalyst will be at the heart of the School, replacing the 1960’s, single-storey West Block building where Science and Maths are taught. The build will have an impact beyond School too, as we work with local partner schools to support science teaching, open up the Community Lab for STEM Residentials and extend our ‘Super Science Summer Workshops’.
As West Block connects to School Block, CATalyst Phase 1 will create the Community Lab, the largest Science space in The CATalyst, and a new Physics Lab. During the school day the Community Lab will be used by Senior School girls for core curriculum work and extra-curricular clubs such as Dissection Club, Astrophysics Club, Maths Challenge and the Sixth Form Medical Reading Club. The Physics Lab will serve all the girls. When financial resources allow, we will move to the full CATalyst build, for which planning is secured.
Whilst undertaking CATalyst Phase 1 we will also relocate the Middle School Drama Studio to a new and better equipped home, and refurbish School Block teaching spaces for Maths, English, Drama and History. Work will begin in Summer 2024 and complete in April 2025.
Completing The CATalyst
We need to raise £2.5m in surplus reserves and a further £1.3m to deliver The CATalyst and are actively seeking support towards this and Phase 1. Philanthropic support will accelerate our ability to create The CATalyst for the St Catherine’s community today and for generations to come. Please do get in touch if you’d like to explore your support.
Health & Wellbeing
The power of the PTA
We would like to thank all those involved in the Prep and Senior School PTAs this year. The generosity of spirit you have shown in welcoming new parents and delivering School social events such as the Prep Summer Ball, Senior Curry Suppers and the Speech Day BBQ on the lawn, and create the community which we all so enjoy. In addition to building friendships, providing advice and guiding parents through School life, funds raised by the PTA have a significant impact on the girls’ School experience. Upcoming changes made possible thanks to the support of the PTAs include:
The Prep Wellbeing Pod
Thanks to a Prep School PTA donation of £10,000 combined with School funds, we have a marvellous quiet space for our Prep girls to have a breather, think about their emotions, play music, enjoy a chat with a friend or speak with one of our pastoral team. The Wellbeing Pod in the Prep School garden complements our many wellbeing initiatives such as the ‘Place to Be’, 'Place to Talk', the ‘Buddy Bench’ and our Playground Ambassadors.
The Prep & Senior Health Centre
A Senior School PTA donation of £5,000, coupled with philanthropic support from alumnae and investment by the School, has helped realise an upgraded Health Centre for the girls. The original School infirmary was built in 1890 and housed where the Medical Centre was, next to Bronte boarding in School Block. In 1896 our Patron’s Great, Great Grandmother, Lady Ashcombe gave a generous gift to create a Sanatorium which is now our Music Centre.
2023 saw the full refurbishment of The Medical Centre with a new welcoming area creating access from the ground floor near the back lawns of the Senior School. The newly named ‘Health Centre’, opening in October, allows our medical team to triage girls, taking them upstairs as needed for further treatment and care or deal with bumps and bruises swiftly. It also allows parents to collect their daughters easily. The Health Centre now offers two twin bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms and one single bedroom with en-suite; a treatment room; and a self-contained flat for medical staff. For immediate care of our youngest girls, the Prep
Health is the focus of our team of nursing staff, school psychologists and counsellors. In these refurbished facilities, the services they offer which support the wellbeing of girls and staff find a new contemporary home!
Share your love of theatre and create ‘The Backdrop'
Drama is part of the core curriculum for all girls from Year 7 to 9 and the School is a product of its impact on the broad education of the pupils, instilling confidence, performance and presentation skills. The current Middle School Drama Studio in School Block has hosted hundreds of lessons, LAMDA classes, production rehearsals and House Drama run-throughs. Through Drama, girls have ‘played their part’ and learnt about the truth of life and social situations through dramatic expression.
As part of Phase 1 of the CATalyst, we now have the opportunity to create an exciting, innovative new Drama studio. It will be a flexible studio for teaching and full black-out production rehearsals, and have lighting rigs and sound desk to extend the existing teaching of Technical Theatre. The studio will complement the suite of rehearsal, devising and performance spaces in the Anniversary Halls and be a dedicated ‘home’ for Middle School thespians.
Our talented team of Drama and Theatre Studies teachers harness the girls' enthusiasm for Drama and deliver academic rigour to an increasing number of girls choosing GCSE and A Level Drama. They would like your help to inspire girls in the new Drama Studio!
As a community, we all enjoy the girls’ exceptional productions. Last year we were charmed by the Prep-Prep Nativity and Year 6’s Matilda, made to think deeply by The Lord of the Flies and uplifted by Annie
Play Your Part
Would you like to 'Play your Part' to inspire the girls with your favourites from stage and screen?
Do you love The Mouse Trap, Schindler’s List, Slumdog Millionaire or Mamma Mia? Would you support the new Drama Studio by making a gift of £250 which we will acknowledge on ‘The Backdrop’, with a poster of your chosen dramatic inspiration?

I am so excited that our students will have access to a new drama space in which they can learn to design, direct and perform their own theatre. ”
