I write this column, my last as Headmistress of St Catherine’s, Bramley, in valedictory mode for the most part, and huge gratitude for all the wonderful cards, messages and memories that have been arriving in school or came in person to what is being styled as Ali P’s Garden Party. It was wonderful and very moving to see so many people there. My thanks to the Association for a) insisting that we should do this and b) doing all the hard work.
I have also been overwhelmed to hear that the collection to mark my tenure is such that Jane Pink is working on sourcing a beautiful armillary sphere for the Rose Garden. I have asked for this to be engraved with two texts which I have always valued. The first is our School Motto: ‘Let us go on …’ (Hebrews 6,I), which is not actually engraved/displayed anywhere public in School and I think it should be. The second is the reassuring words of Mother Julian of Norwich. Living in the Middle Ages, through the devastating plague now known as The Black Death (1348 –approx. 1353), she nonetheless wrote her, Revelations of Divine Love, the earliest surviving book in the English language, which includes her famous words: ‘All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of thing shall be well’. The words of a renowned female thinker, writer and Christian, felt very appropriate for St Catherine’s. They are also words that can resonate for those of other faiths or none, in their encouragement of calmness and optimism in times of crisis. My thanks to everyone who has made this possible. I am very touched by your generosity.
In other news, as the phrase goes, I am delighted to declare the CATalyst Phase 1 development open. It was never going to be straightforward to hack into the join between existing buildings respectively dated, 1935, 1977 and 1985 nor did it prove to be! Hats off to Mrs Stoneham (COO) and our Estate Governors (Denis Ulyet and Stuart Hawkes) for tenacity through many site meetings and tricky moments along the way. However, we now have two brand new, state-of-the-art laboratories, 3 new teaching spaces, and a second fully equipped Drama Studio to match that in the Anniversary Halls. School Block is transformed - with light clear to see at the end of the two main corridors - and the whole area has been repainted and generally refreshed. A smaller scale project to fit within the parameters of challenging times but showing our confidence in the future and our passion for girls’ education and pastoral care. The new rooms enable nicer spaces for many tutor groups. I will be willing the community on in the years to come to complete CATalyst Phase 2 when you prudently can.
At the time of writing there are many things still to come this term which will see out another academic year, and we will be celebrating the Class of 2025 on Speech Day and wishing them well from Long Parli on the final Thursday. On that occasion I read some wise advice from St Paul and the Head Girls read from Dr Zeus: ‘Oh, the places you’ll go’. These traditions are part of the place and ‘belong’ to us all. And of course, we will sing Non Nobis
At the end of a 42-year career, I reflect on many blessings and opportunities that have come my way. Without doubt, the phone call from Roger Lilley (Chairman) inviting me to be Headmistress of St Catherine’s was the most exciting of all and I have no regrets whatsoever about accepting the challenge. As I step away now, as is the custom, and wish my excellent successor all the joy and fulfilment I have enjoyed here, I am pleased to leave the School in great heart, full of aspirational young women and girls from 3-18 and a wonderful team of teachers at all levels. LUGO. Over and out. Ali P xx

Mansfield Park by Jane Austen
Tuesday 18 th November | 6.00pm - 7.30pm
Mansfield Park has at its emotional centre the often solitary and silent Fanny Price, a heroine who tends to be unnoticed and ignored - even, at times, slighted, crushed and exploited. At significant points in the novel, she comes under powerful pressure to act in ways that appear right and proper to those around her, but which she considers to be wrong, and Jane Austen’s portrayal of Fanny’s state of mind as she attempts to resist this pressure is psychologically and morally compelling. For a brief insight into the heroine and the workings of Jane Austen’s treatment of her, please see Jonathan’s YouTube video linked here: tinyurl.com/32ftjpxa

As is now a long-standing School tradition, Mrs Phillips’s portrait has been painted in her last term as Head of St Catherine’s School. The chosen artist was Kathy Barker.
Kathy is a professional artist, working in oils, charcoals and pastels out of her studio in Fulham in West London. She trained at Wimbledon School of Art (BA Fine Art and MA Printmaking). Following her formal education, she was awarded a studio at the Florence Trust, London, and latterly commissioned to write Drawing and Painting the Clothed Figure, published in 2005. As her career progressed, she followed her true passion for portraiture and studied at the Charles Cecil Studio, Florence, Italy.
Throughout her career Kathy has exhibited work at selective exhibitions including the Royal Society of Portrait Painting and annually at the Society of Women Artists. Since the Foundation of St Catherine’s School in 1885 there have been eight Heads. Mrs Phillips’s portrait will hang alongside those of the previous Heads. Sadly, no photo or painting has ever been found of Ms Burnett, the first Head from 1885 - 1887. We do know, however, that she left St Catherine’s to become a missionary in Japan. By 1895 she had returned to England and was known to be studying Theology at King’s while supporting the work of the suffragists.
The Association Choir’s annual concert took place on 15th March in the School Auditorium featuring Symphony Orchestra, Senior Choir, Middle Chamber Choir, and of course, the Association Choir.
The Choir opened with For Lo I Raise Up by Stanford. This was followed by three fantastic concerto performances: Angelina Ding (U6 Jennifer Bate Memorial Organ Scholar) played Rheinberger’s Organ Concerto | 3rd Movement; Mia Huang (U6 Music Scholar) played Saint-Saëns’ Violin Concerto | 1st Movement; and Carina Mankabady (U6 Music Scholar) played Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto | 1st Movement. All three were outstanding. The orchestra then treated us to a final piece before the interval: Farandole by Bizet.
After the interval the Choir, made up of over 130 members of the St Cat’s community, by special request of Mrs Phillips, sang Mozart’s Mass in C Minor, accompanied by the Symphony Orchestra, and joined by four soloists: Ruby Skilbeck (2023: currently studying at the Royal Academy of Music) and Gabrielle Tang (U6 Music Scholar) as Sopranos, as well as visiting soloists Sammy Mills, Tenor, and Finlay Bloore, Baritone.
We were also delighted to welcome back a further 12 alumnae either singing or playing in the orchestra, ranging from the Years of 2005-2024.
This is a great and complex work. There was considerable euphoria in orchestra and choir after the final notes sounded. We did it!
Thank you to Mr Greenfield for giving up your Wednesday evenings for rehearsals and conducting so skilfully on the night, and also a big thank you to Mr Lloyd for teaching and conducting the Symphony Orchestra throughout this term. Thanks also go to Ms Švecová, Mr Farquharson and Mr Kim for all their assistance at all the rehearsals (this work needed a lot of part practices!) and on the night too.
Every year the Association Choir chooses a charity for the retiring collection and this year, following a powerful interval speech by current parent, Dr Chris Skilbeck, we raised an amazing £2,100 for The Peritoneal Malignancy Institute
Would you like to join the Association Choir for our 2026 Concert singing Verdi’s Requiem? If you enjoy singing, then do come along and join us. We welcome all abilities (no auditions), male and female, alumnae, prep and senior parents & grandparents (and their friends) - come and give it a try - it’s a lot of fun. We rehearse on Wednesdays from late November - March in the auditorium.
Email association@stcatherines.info to register your interest.
The Association Choir Sings Rock is a light-hearted choir for members of our St Cat’s community. We only have three rehearsals before performing our song as one of the acts in the annual St Catherine’s Jazz and Rock Concert. This larger than usual choir of over 60 members this year consisted of a mixture of alumnae, parents, staff, former staff and friends from the Bramley community.
This year we sang Queen’s 1974 Hit, Killer Queen. We all had a lot of fun at rehearsals and at the final performance together.
Thank you to Sarah Jones (Director of Prep Music), who led our rehearsals and conducted on the night, Matthew Greenfield (Director of Music), for accompanying during rehearsals and on the night, Ian Young, Head of Contemporary Music on drums, who led the band, and our guest guitarist, Mark Robinson (Current Parent).
Please email association@stcatherines.info if you would like to join us next year.
Only three rehearsals and the concert – it’s great fun!
For our End of Spring Term Lecture, former Head Girl Rhian Warner (Dobell) (1993) came to speak to us about her career journey and her role now in a senior position in the NHS as Assistant Director for Place, Integration, Transformation and Delivery at the NHS North Central London Trust.
Rhian took a degree in Physiotherapy at King’s College London, and forged a successful career for herself in physiotherapy, but gradually realised that her skills lay in the strategic management
side of healthcare, and she now has over 20 years’ experience in operational, transformational and clinical management.
Her story was full of insight and made us aware of the huge variety of different NHS careers available in addition to the classic medical professions. She really showed us the importance of always advocating for oneself in one’s career. Rhian’s current leadership role is inspiring, and there was a lot for us to take away from her talk.
The Driving Her Future: Careers in the World of Engineering Seminar, held in February was an excellent example of an event showcasing the many different career opportunities available to pupils.
We were excited to team up with the Institute of Engineering and Technology (IET) to host this seminar where we heard from Mr Alastair White (Head of Design Engineering) about the construction of the Westfield 7 kit car by Sixth Formers as part of the Sixth Form subsidiary subjects programme .
We also heard from parents and alumnae who work in different areas of Engineering: (pictured left to right below) Katie Amin (Parent), Construction Project Manager; Amelia Richardson (2019) Graduate Geo-Technical Engineer; Jonathan Jeffers (Parent), Lecturer and Researcher in Innovation at Imperial College London and Abi Ashby (2014), Air Engineering Officer in the Royal Navy.
Hearing from professionals who work in different areas of engineering as well as at different stages of their careers enabled the audience to gain an understanding of the breadth of degrees
available as well as a huge variety of career roles within the engineering sector.
The evening ended with a networking session around the Westfield cars which gave everyone the opportunity to get up close to them, chat to the Sixth Formers involved in the build, and talk further with our fascinating speakers about their roles, their career journeys and their insights into the world of engineering.
We were delighted to welcome students from other schools as well as members of the IET, which gave a broad spectrum of viewpoints. Such events enable our students and alumnae to network, gain work experience and develop their knowledge of careers available to them. The support of the Association network makes events such as these possible, and developing links with professional bodies also helps us to widen our perspective of different industrial sectors.
Catherine Taylor (Director of Careers Education)
We had a great turnout of alumnae and parents in March at our latest London Network event at the offices of CVC|DIF on Threadneedle Street. Our Chair, Angela Roshier (Current Parent) hosted our fantastic speaker Dr Andrea Kilpatrick (Kilpatrick Executive Coaching) on the topic of Confidence in the Workplace. She explained how small changes in your behaviour through better self-awareness can lead to real change and have a significant impact on yourself and others in the workplace. There was an exciting buzz to the whole event with lots of postpresentation debate, and plenty of networking. Alumnae and parents were joined by nine Sixth Formers who made the most of this unique opportunity to network with St Catherine’s alumnae and parents.
Do join us at our next event on Finding Your Feet in London on Wednesday 15th October at Clyde & Co LLP, St Botolph Building, EC3A 7AR, hosted by alumna Vicky Green (2005).
These events are free to attend but please mail association@stcatherines.info to register your interest.
We are incredibly grateful for the continued support of The CATs Car Club members. Their ongoing commitment has enabled us to sustain the highly successful Westfield kit car build project for our Sixth Form girls for another year.
To celebrate their support - and all things automotive - members gathered at the iconic Goodwood racing circuit for an exhilarating morning on the track. Joined by Mr Ali White, Head of Design Engineering, attendees learned more about our second kit car build, discovered our plans for the first yellow Westfield, and had the chance to take their own vehicles out for some thrilling highspeed laps!
If you’re interested in joining The CATs Car Club and supporting the promotion of STEM careers at St Catherine’s, we’d love to hear from you.

In May, we were thrilled to welcome parents to our Creative Circle Synergy event - a delightful hands-on cookery class led by the evercharming Philip Friend in the Culinary Arts teaching kitchen.
Sixteen parents, working in pairs, rolled up their sleeves as Philip explained the science behind churning cream - why it separates, and how, with vigorous shaking, it transforms into rich, creamy butter. The byproduct, buttermilk, didn’t go to waste. Philip demonstrated how it could be turned into hearty, traditional Irish soda bread.
Guests then got creative, baking their own loaves and adding ingredients like cheese, fresh herbs, and delicate chive flowers to personalise their recipe.
With participants from as far afield as Thailand and Hong Kong, the event was a truly international gathering - and a warm, flavourful introduction to the cookery experience at St Catherine’s.
If you would like to find out more about becoming a member of our Creative Circles and supporting the Creative Arts at St Catherine’s, do get in touch.
Jane Pink | Acting Director of Development 01483 899787 | jane.pink@stcatherines.info
Our Year 5 and 6 pupils (UII and LIII Prep School) were thrilled to welcome Rachel Craig, a current parent, who shared insights into her fascinating and multifaceted career.
Rachel has successfully blended her creative passions with a professional career. She currently works as a Senior Tax Manager at Anglo American Plc, while also pursuing her love of glass art. A dedicated member of the UK Glass Art Collective, The Contemporary Glass Society, and the Glass Art Society of Seattle, Rachel exhibits her artwork across the UK and frequently attends international conferences, courses, and exhibitions. She says –
"I've always enjoyed the Creative Arts. After earning a BSc in Industrial Economics, I took a year out to follow a dream of training as a Cordon Bleu chef, which opened doors to a range of exciting opportunities. Eventually, I transitioned into a more traditional finance career. With over 20 years of experience in the field, it was a supportive boss who encouraged me to pursue a part-time foundation course in Art & Design at the University for the Creative Arts."
We are incredibly grateful to Rachel for inspiring our students and showing them that it’s possible to combine professional careers with personal passions. As a special keepsake, she gifted each girl a beautifully handmade glass heart, encouraging them to ‘follow your heart.’ What an inspiration!
We were delighted to welcome back to St Catherine’s 24 alumnae from the Year of 1975 for their 50-year reunion. Each of them had made their own name badge with a photo of themselves from when they were at school as they were worried they might not recognise each other. This proved not to be the case as they all recognised each other instantly! Many had travelled from far afield, particularly former Head Girl, Carolyn Franklin (Merrifield), who had arranged a visit from New Zealand especially.
The event started with a glass of prosecco and the ladies looking through various items from the school archive, as well as the many photos they had brought themselves. There was much laughter at both their hair styles and clothes in the 1970s.
The tour of School was very noisy as they all chatted and told us their memories, while taking lots of pictures of themselves in their old haunts. They enjoyed a moment of peace in the Chapel - and were delighted to find the pews now have cushions! They were amazed at all the new buildings and the many more opportunities these facilities offer the current pupils.
As a number of them had boarded, we took them to see Brontë and Keller. Thank you to all the girls who happily let them see their old rooms.
The afternoon finished with a delicious cream tea in the Dining Hall with lots more opportunity to reminisce and enjoy each other’s stories! A big thank you to Jan Brockie (Norris) who helped bring the year group together for this special event. We really enjoyed having you back at School.
On the 20th November 1975, a plane making a test flight at Dunsfold aerodrome hit a flock of birds shortly after take-off, and was forced to make an emergency landing. The aircraft overran the end of the runway and continued onto the A281 where it hit the vehicle of Mrs Jenty Whittington who was doing the St Cat’s school-run home with two of her daughters
Catherine Leakey (U4)
Jane Onslow (U6)
Kathryn Tucker (L5)
and three other girls. The pilot and nine passengers on the aircraft survived but all passengers in the vehicle were killed.
This was an unbelievably tragic event for the families involved and the impact was felt by the School community which lost so many members in one day.
The families invite you to remember and celebrate the lives of at

We were excited to learn that Gigi Pezier (2022) had been selected to row in the Cambridge Women’s Lightweight Crew (Seat 5) in this year’s Oxford/Cambridge Boat Race on April 12th on the Thames. The race starts at Putney Bridge and ends at Mortlake, a course of 6.8km (over three times the distance of an Olympic race).
Cambridge had an amazing day with a clean sweep of wins across the board, for all six of their men’s and women’s races against Oxford!
Gigi’s crew also secured a new course record winning by three lengths.
Gigi is in her third year at Queen’s College Cambridge studying Theology, Religion and Philosophy.
Rowing has introduced me to the most inspiring group of people, and has helped me become fitter and stronger than I have ever been.
At the beginning of February, Mr Alastair White (Head of Design Engineering) flew to Australia with four current U4 pupils, Fiona, Livina, Harriet and Kate to launch a new exchange scheme with St Catherine’s School in Sydney, taking part in their Robotics Programme and The Regional Robotics Competition.
While Mr White was there, we arranged for him to meet up with alumnae currently living in Sydney at a clubhouse on Bondi Beach for a fantastic afternoon of catching up. The alumnae all thoroughly enjoyed the event, promising to come if we host another one next year, and they were already making plans in the meantime to meet up with each other. We are so delighted to have brought this part of the Association Community together.

We are always delighted to receive items to add to our School Archive.
In the last year we have been donated collections of pictures, documents and ephemera from the families of John Palmer (Former Head), Nan Brown (Former Staff), Rosemary O’Brien (Former Staff) and most recently Jane Upton (Mackay) (1952).
Jane’s family have generously given us her photo album from when she was at School from 1946. It is full of wonderful pictures, all annotated beautifully and clearly showing the spirit of those post wartime years at School. It will be an important part of our records in the School Archive and will be enjoyed by generations to come.
Our last edition of Non Nobis featured the 1921 photo below of Headmistress, Mrs Charlotte Russell Baker with her staff of sixteen. This edition’s back page is a recreation of this original picture, with Alice Phillips, Naomi Bartholomew and the Combined Senior Management Teams of both Prep and Senior Schools, including the PAs to the Heads and the Chief Operating Officer. St Catherine’s now has a staff of 277! The wisteria from that 1921 picture still blooms in April/May each year, and along with our majestic horse chestnut tree on the lawn, is an iconic feature of St Catherine’s.
