Dear Catharinites, Parents, & Friends, What does it mean to be ‘alive and thriving’ amidst a pandemic that never seems to end? Our hope is that this President’s Report will give you a glimpse of how much energy unfolds in all things ordinary and extraordinary at St. Catharine Academy (SCA). Catherine McAuley exhorted the early Sisters of Mercy: “While we place our confidence in God, we must act as if success depended upon our own exertion.” Such is our reflection on teaching and learning in a pandemic environment. It takes a lot of exertion and creativity! Now, after a year of hybrid and remote learning simultaneously, our teachers enthusiastically welcomed all students back to the classroom in September. It’s the environment in which they learn best. However, to give you an idea of how teaching evolved, we encourage you to spend some time engaging with our Academic Highlights section, particularly the Coral Reef Project where academics, technology, and care for the earth meet. Don’t forget to scan the QR code to view the video! We are also very excited about the success of our Capital Campaign and the completion of the projects it supports. SCA can welcome everyone regardless of physical ability thanks to the new lobby, an elevator, and other renovations making the school fully accessible. The lobby, filled with natural light and beauty, invites students into quiet conversations and a safe place to just be. Not pictured in the photo spread highlighting the fruit of the renovation is how the fine arts program benefitted with the creation of a dedicated dance studio. Thank you to everyone who supported this vital campaign. To take a virtual tour of SCA 2021, scan the QR code and see the changes for yourself!

We congratulate the Class of 2021, who earned more than $18 million in academic scholarships and grants. As proud as we are of them, we are equally moved by their testimony of what they valued most in their St. Catharine Academy education. Their words, as well as the words of other young alumnae and the parents of our current and past students, bring alive our Mission Statement and the core values of the Sisters of Mercy. Guided by these principles, we prepare young women in the Mercy tradition for college success, leadership, and engagement in the world community. Thank you to all of the donors who supported scholarships and financial aid contributing to our 2021 graduates’ SCA success! So much of the SCA experience is made possible because of partnerships. We thank our lay and religious volunteer Board of Trustees who bring to SCA their wisdom and whose expertise in strategic decision-making helps to ensure a quality 21st century education. And finally, we thank all of our donors for helping to create the foundation for every student to reach her full potential. We are fully focused on 2022 and beyond. Despite the challenges this moment in time holds, we remain full of hope. Alive and thriving! Sincerely,

I am the eldest of five and my mother worked hard to ensure that all of us went to private school for the best education. With the Trustee Scholarship, I was able to stay at SCA and flourish and remove a burden from my mother financially. Since I did not have to work in high school, I was involved in leadership roles, played a sport, volunteered, and did extracurricular activities. The Trustee Scholarship was a huge benefit because it gave me extra opportunities to grow as a woman and leader through the extra workshops and activities.

Without the Trustee Scholarship, I would not have been able to continue my studies at SCA, and therefore not have had the ability to be as involved and make connections at SCA. All of these factors contributed to where I am today.

Portrait of a Graduate: Tynesha Taylor '17 I graduated from Ithaca College with a BS in Exercise Science this past May. I was accepted into their Physician Assistant Program and am part of the inaugural cohort! I have been in school for almost a month and am excited to see where life takes me after completing my program!

While at SCA, I was part of the Science Technology Entry Program at Albert Einstein College of Medicine. It helped me realize that I wanted a career in medicine, a goal I am continuing to work towards today! I was most grateful for SCA in my freshman year of college. It was a very formative year for me and SCA's Regent's/AP courses taught me how to study, how to synthesize information, and how to write essays/ papers. I was also grateful for the friendships that I made with classmates and faculty. I still keep in touch with friends I met at SCA and I am proud of their accomplishments as well! When I went to Ithaca College, I took the abilities and skills I learned and was able to take on leadership opportunities for clubs and organizations, network, and overall be confident in what I was doing.

Portrait of a Graduate: Daisy Prela '18 Daisy is currently entering her third year at the CUNY/Sophie Davis Program of Biomedical Education. She received her white coat at a ceremony in May of 2021, which commemorated her official entrance into medical school. Daisy will graduate with a degree in Biomedical Science and Psychology in May of 2026. Daisy writes, “My experience at SCA is where my work ethic and leadership skills blossomed. I wouldn’t be able to handle the rigorous program I am in if it weren’t for the many lessons I was taught at SCA. I owe my success in my program to the amazing academic and extracurricular opportunities that I had at SCA. I was given everything at my disposal to succeed and get into a great college!” “The Trustee Scholars program was a saving grace for me and my family. When I was a freshman, I did not know about this scholarship program. Since I excelled in my studies, I was able to become part of the Trustee Scholars program. I was delighted, and I felt extreme pride in myself. Not only did I pass my classes with high scores and learn discipline, but I also managed to help my mother financially. A huge weight was lifted off of my family's shoulders. The next three years of my high school journey in this program were truly beneficial. As a Trustee Scholar, I was able to also increase my involvement in school events and meet new people. We were usually the students called upon whenever the school had visitors like alumnae, reporters, or potential future students. I improved my public speaking and confidence through leading open house tours, club fairs, and various school activities. These are skills and memories that I will cherish forever.”

2020–2021 Academic Highlights:

Count Us Girls In Building the Future with Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math

The Coral Reef Project for Computer Science Education Week The Sisters of Mercy have asked each Mercy school to incorporate the critical concerns for Earth, nonviolence, diversity, women, and immigration into its policies, programs, and practices. The National Beta Club participated in the Global Hour of Code for Computer Science Education Week around the world. The topic focused on the critical concern for the Earth. The students coded an autonomous, environmentally-friendly robot that would run underwater to help clean up garbage in different bodies of water. This particular underwater robot eats garbage at the bottom of the depths of the oceans. The project is called the Coral Reef, where a robot drives around the bottom of the ocean (or pool) and collects garbage. At the end of the program it

gives you the total weight of garbage collected by this robot. The robogirls mathematically grid, plot coordinates, and code geometric-shaped motion patterns: a "rectangular perimeter," a "diagonal," and a "figure-8," with each motion repeated in a loop until each task is completed. As the robot moves underwater, it loses its charge and drives until ready to be recharged in intervals of one minute. We were able to collect a maximum of 65.04 lbs (29.5kg). of garbage in one minute of robotic driving time!

Scan the code below to view the robot in action!

Reign H. ‘24 "My coding experience was so inspiring. It made me feel smart and it was so cool to learn how coding works." Jenay G. ‘22 “It was fun learning how to code yesterday because coding is the future of technology. As a young Black woman, it is important for me to participate in activities like this to show other young Black girls that it is possible to have a future in technology.” Samin S. ‘21 "Doing Hour of Code gave me confidence that I can pursue a career in STEM or coding! For girls like me who might not know a lot about coding, this program is a great start to learning amazing things for the future!" Angelina P. ’21 "Participating in the Hour of Code event was really special to me. Not just because I’m a programmer for the robotics team but also because it reinforced the reason I love to program and wanted to have a STEM career in the first place. It was also nice to be able to create programs and share an interest in coding with my other club members and friends."

2020–2021 Arts and Culture Highlights:

They Have What It Takes And We Help Them Soar Celebrating Culture Through Art Kymeco W. ’21 was one of three St. Catharine Academy students who exhibited artwork at the OSilas Gallery at Concordia College in the Spring of 2021 as part of the 15th Annual StArt 2021 Regional High School Art Exhibition. Over 50 students from 21 public and private schools from Westchester, Rockland, and Fairfield counties participated in the virtual event. Kymeco turned her artwork into an exploration of her heritage. “My art portfolio was based on my cultural background, which is Jamaica,” she says. “And it has a twist to it as well because my father is a Rastafarian, so it’s a mix of both cultures.” Kymeco used a variety of media for her artwork including oil paint and watercolor. She also infused Jamaican culture into the painting by using spices from her homeland to create homemade paints with rich colors.

Arts Opportunities at SCA St. Catharine’s has developed a visual arts program, that allows students to explore art from Introduction to Art through AP Art and Design 2D. Whether students are creative with their hands or on the computer, there are courses to hone their skills. Courses in drawing and painting, graphic design, and fashion design are also available. The Art Club and Photography Club give students a chance to explore their creativity outside the classroom. Recent students have been accepted into a number of prestigious programs around the country, including Moore College of Art & Design, Fashion Institute of Technology, School of Visual Arts, New Hampshire Institute of Art, Otis College of Art and Design, Parsons School of Design, and Savannah College of Art and Design.

Mr. & Mrs. Persaud (Parents of Angelina P. ‘21) SCA Delivered On Its Promises The journey began during an Open House event at SCA in 2017. As parents, we immediately felt welcomed by the community and were impressed by the values the school had to offer. We were also impressed by the academic outcomes of the students, namely the colleges they were accepted to and their scholarship offers. The expression on our daughter’s face and our own sense of certainty made it easy to put SCA as our first choice. After accepting the offer to enroll at SCA, we were excited to attend freshman orientation with our daughter. On that day, Sr. Pat made a statement that resonated in our minds and hearts. It was “give us your daughters, and in four years we will deliver to you successful women.” We left that day feeling very proud and content with the decision we made in allowing SCA to educate our daughter. Beginning in ninth grade, SCA provided our daughter with the opportunity to join various clubs and teams. We watched as she took on leadership roles in the school and became more integrated with the student body and faculty in different ways. Primarily, her roles as president of the Women’s Empowerment Initiative Club and the co-captain of the Robotics Team had a profound impact both on our daughter and us. We were able to see her flourish academically and intellectually while bringing recognition to the school that provided her with a worthy foundation. Additionally, her college future was secured when she was accepted to her university choices with scholarships from each; in large part it was due to the encouragement from the SCA community. On graduation day, we watched as her high school journey came to an end. As the ceremony unfolded, we were pleasantly surprised to hear her recite her poem, which was addressed to the students. Further into the ceremony, she received the Catharinite Award for her commitment to the values and character of SCA. In that moment, we felt an immense sense of pride and confidence in SCA for enabling her to reach her true potential. We felt compelled to approach Sr. Pat and Sr. Ann for delivering on their promise. They had, indeed, transformed our daughter from a young girl into a successful woman in those four years. Our advice for parents who want to see their daughter transformed from a girl to a successful woman: SCA is the high school for your daughter. We would like to thank the entire SCA faculty for all they’ve done to nurture and help develop our daughter into who she is today. We are forever grateful.

Nan-Etta Watson Mack ‘74 Why I Am Putting SCA In My Trust My father was an NYPD patrolman who put all three of his children through Catholic grammar and high schools. Having a solid Catholic education was extremely important to my parents. Money was tight and sometimes the month lasted longer than his paycheck. Thanks to the teachers and Sisters at SCA, I received a great education and because of them I attended college and joined the Air Force Reserve Office Training Corps. One of the benefits of going to an all-girl school was I never was made to feel like a “girl.” I was never told I couldn’t do anything, so I never thought I couldn’t. The only thing stopping me was Me. This, and being from the Bronx, set me up for success in the very male, dominated military where I spent the majority of my adult life. Most of the time, I was the first or only female in a certain position, normally leading tens to hundreds of men. St Catharine’s gave me the moral and mental strength to handle these challenges. So why am I putting SCA in my trust? I know how challenging it can be to pay the tuition for Catholic school. I also know the life changing effect of that education. I want to help ease some of the burden of paying for that education for other young women so they can succeed and experience the fullness of what life has to offer. I want to help them follow their dreams even if they haven’t dreamed them yet!

Nancy Platoni Poli '73 My support for St. Catharine Academy As a graduate of St. Catharine Academy, I believe that it is my responsibility to support SCA’s mission to prepare young women in the Mercy tradition for college success, leadership, and engagement in the world community. The education and the sense of responsibility that I received at SCA has enabled me to become a strong and successful woman. It is my turn to support the next generation of young women attending SCA. As a member of the Board of Trustees and chairperson of the Audit/Finance committee, I believe in sharing my time, talents, and treasure with the next generation of SCA students. It is important that all SCA graduates continue the good work of Sister Catherine McAuley and pay it forward. My husband and I have supported St. Catharine Academy for many years. We both believe that a strong foundation of education and compassionate service to those in need is essential for today’s young women. It is our hope that others also continue to contribute to this vital mission.

Breast Cancer Awareness Gift Brings Education Full Circle When Mary Geralyn Schollhamer '03 took health class with Ms. Dolores Attinello Piergentile '70, she learned about breast cancer awareness, self-exams, and more. At the time, she did not realize just how significant that was, but over the years she has come to appreciate what a unique experience it was for high school girls to learn. Now, she wants this generation of students to have the same opportunities. Mary made a gift to help support breast cancer awareness for the current SCA students to continue Ms. P's legacy. "When I was a student at SCA, I received comprehensive health education, including how to find tumors on 'dummy' breasts," she says. "It wasn't until I moved away did I realize that my experience was nearly unheard of. Breast cancer education is simply not found in high school curricula. As a result, my friends didn't know how to perform a monthly breast exam, nor did they know its importance for women of all ages." Mary pointed to the funding as an opportunity to save lives. "When we educate young women, we are not only empowering them, but we are also empowering their loved ones. Students take the information they learn at school home to their families and friends. It's an exponential win for all women."

Dolores says that as a young teacher, she reviewed the health curriculum being used at most schools and saw gaps, especially for young women. “Empowering young women to take care of themselves and others and making an impact on their community and society at large were always my goals for my students,” Dolores says. “When the Middle States representative came into my classroom one year to evaluate SCA, she remarked at the end of the class to me ‘I never saw a classroom of students so engaged in the lesson and hands-on skills they were learning.’ I was very proud of my students and that moment in time for me.” Looking back on her high school days, Mary says St. Catharine's had a huge impact on her life. "In a period of our lives when there's so much insecurity, SCA offered a safe space for young women to simply be themselves. You can tell a woman went to SCA when you meet her because all graduates have an authentic confidence—one that says, 'I am here and I have value.' I look back now and realize what a special experience it was."

Why SCA is a Great Choice Portrait of a Graduate: Ashlica Malcolm '14

Ashlica Malcolm graduated from Quinnipiac University School of Law in May 2021 and took the Bar Exam in July. She will start her career as an Assistant District Attorney at the King’s County District Attorney’s Office in Brooklyn. “My involvement in SCA gave me the confidence to explore multiple leadership positions in college. During my years at the University of Bridgeport and even law school, I took on very similar roles as well. Because of my SCA experience, it was easier to navigate the roles and I was grateful that SCA allowed me to have these positions. “SCA prepares girls for leadership by giving so many opportunities for students to grow, hone in on their skills, and teach valuable lessons. SCA allowed us to be independent in our roles while also directing us to be better in our skills. I am extremely grateful to have spent my formative years at SCA, which has made me into the woman I am today!”

Robert Falcone Founder of the Frances Vasti Falcone ‘69+ Memorial Scholarship In October of 2018 my wife, Frances Vasti Falcone, lost her eighteen-month battle with pancreatic cancer. Having been with my wife since the age of sixteen, I was heartbroken. Over the next few months, I searched for a way to both honor her memory and have others feel the goodness that she brought to this world. In the spring of 2019, I received a copy of Pathways, and it had a notice of a class reunion; the year 2019 was to be the 50th anniversary of my wife graduating from St. Catharine Academy. It was then that I decided to create a scholarship in her name. I had several reasons for selecting this path. St. Catharine has as its mission, “to prepare young women, in the Mercy tradition for college success, leadership, and engagement in the world community.” As a mother, Frances raised our daughter to believe she could accomplish anything if she was willing to work hard to achieve her goals just as the school does for its students. Moreover, she wanted our daughter to experience rigorous and diverse academic and social program just as St. Catharine’s offers. I was especially impressed by the school’s STEM Program and comprehensive Math and Science course offerings. St. Catharine has a diverse student body and fosters a sense of family. Our daughter went to a school with a rich diversity like St. Catharine. Like students at St. Catharine, we wanted her to experience such a setting because it would make her a more tolerant and accepting person. The interactions that students have will be important life lessons and add to the richness of their lives. As a graduate of St. Catharine, my wife lived the school’s most important core value, “Living life with abundant love, compassion, generosity and hospitality, demonstrating the strength of infinite mercy.’ Throughout her life, she was a loving daughter, mother, wife and caring member of our parish and the community. I know that she would want to touch the life of another person by helping them to find happiness and achieve their dreams. It is for all these reasons that I established a scholarship in her name at St. Catharine Academy. 28

Alive and Thriving Walking into the new lobby at St. Catharine’s, visitors are greeted with an open space bathed in natural light. The feeling of the new space matches the new school year. The building is bustling with everyone back to in-person learning. After school, students can be heard practicing in the gym, the STEM lab, the dance room.

stronger than any of its parts. At the beginning of the pandemic, the community created a video message about why staying home to keep each other safe was important. The message reached beyond our own community and was shared by a number of news outlets throughout the Bronx and beyond.

SCA’s message for the year is “Alive and Thriving.” It permeates all we are as a community. Thriving in the classrooms. Thriving as SCA helps the community with toy and food drives. Thriving as seniors start to receive news about their futures with college acceptances and scholarships. Thriving as alumnae and friends support St. Catharine’s to help it continue Mercy education for a new generation.

When the City was ready to reopen, so was St. Catharine’s. Again, as a community, we came together to create protocols to keep education happening for those able to return to the building and those still in need of remote learning. This year, we built on those experiences and prepared to bring everyone back to our building, which completed renovations only days after the opening of school.

One of the lessons of the past nearly two years has been that when St. Catharine’s comes together as a community, it is

Alive and Thriving—what a perfect way to describe the new beginnings, which build on over 130 years of Mercy education.
