Middle School Turning Circle Construction Photography by: Rev. Durk Steed Page Design by: Jack Nystrom

The construction of the middle school turning circle has been happening every day since August of this summer break. Reverend Steed has been taking pictures of the construction every week to keep track of what is happening and what progress is being made to the new Middle School drop-off loop. The project is expected to be complete by mid-December.

Expl o RVA: A Student's Perspective by M ason Car t er In my opinion, ExploRVA is a great way to get everyone to know our city better. Instead of an Activity Day, where you were only allowed to choose one activity, Explor RVA lets you do as many events as you want. Having the freedom to choose the amount of events that you want to do makes this a much more enjoyable experience for everyone.

Mr. Cooper was awarded the Noell Travel Grant in the summer of 2017. He has worked at Saint Christopher's since 1982 which is 35 years. Also, he went to Rochester Institute of Technology.

I think that Burt Foster was the most interesting to me. He lives in Bristol, VA. He earned the designation,Master Blade smith, from the American Society of Bladesmiths, and serves as a judge for those who also want to earn the designation. He spent two hours with us, and I was struck by his gentle spirit, his passion for what he does, the stunning designs and workmanship of his knives, his care for things hand-made, and for his very well-spoken explanation of who he is and why he does what he does.

"Foster is both a credit to his craft and to the human race." --Steven Cooper

It was in the fall of ?95 that I was asked to be the foreman of a group of people who restored the woodwork in the Blue Room of the White House. President Clinton was in office, and I saw him come and go by helicopter. I didn?t meet him, but I did meet Mrs. Clinton. We were there 22 days, and it was the only time since I was a little boy that I was escorted to the bathroom! Wh ich cit ies did you t r avel t o?

First we went to Abington and Bristol, Va, Jonesborough, Tenn, and Asheville, NC. We interviewed six artists. In Rockport Maine we interviewed Peter Korn. He started the Center For Furniture Craftsman 22 years ago. Also, he made a book that I read: Why We Make Things, and Why It Matters. We went to Asheville to see the Southern Highlands Craftsman?s Guild Show. Lastly we went to Charleston, SC. There, we had a lot of fun and really good food.

I wanted to visit some people who make their living either making things, or in helping to educate those who do. For me, I wanted to learn about what motivated them to become makers and what their lives have been like.

Wh en did you f in ally com e back ?

I left at the and of July 2017 and were gone 31 days. We got home the first week of August.

Mr. Pi per's Tri p Mr. Piper has been teaching at Saint Chr istopher 's for two full year s. He was selected to go to Isr ael with a gr oup of educator s to lear n mor e about the Isr ael- Palestine conflict. They also went to gain mor e infor mation on the education system in Isr ael. While he was ther e he encounter ed many differ ent cultur es and nationalities. He met with Ar ab Palestinians, Isr aeli Jews, Bedouins, and Dr uze people. One of the specific people that he met was Zalman Spivack who was his tour guide on his tr ip. Mr. Spivack visited St. Chr istopher 's this November. While he was in Isr ael Mr.Piper visited Temple on the Mount, Chur ch of the Holy Sepulchr e (sight of Jesus?tomb), Mosada, and much mor e. While he was ther e he tr ied many new foods including gr illed eggplant and a condiment called Sh?ug. Sh?ug is a hot r elish that includes hot pepper s, cilantr o, lemon and olive oil.

By George Beck

One moment that r eally stuck out to Mr.Piper was standing on top of Mt. Bental and looking down into war - devastated Syr ia. Also, they went to a National Par k near the Gaza Wall. Just 6 hour s later a r ocket str ike was launched on the Gaza Str ip just 6 miles away fr om wher e they had been standing. Finally, he thor oughly enjoyed visiting the holy sites that he had r ead about in the Bible. For example, Mount of the Beatitudes, the Gar den of Gethsemane, and Golgotha wer e just a few that he visited. Mr.Piper had an amazing tr ip and if given the chance he would go back to Isr ael.

Teacher Feat ure: Mr. Wood Biogr aph y Mr Wood was born in Baltimore, Maryland, but he has lived all over the eastern United States. He has lived in Connecticut, New Jersey, North Carolina, Maine, and now, he lives in Virginia. He has three siblings and both of his parents are teachers. During his middle school years, he went to Princeton Day School in New Jersey. He went to college at Bates College in Lewiston, Maine. His hobbies include making coffee, listening to podcasts, running, and writing. He would like to thank everyone that has welcomed him to the Saint Christopher 's community.

Qu est ion s an d An sw er s Q: What have you liked about St. Christopher ?s so far? A: I really like getting to know students. My favorite thing to do is just get to know people one on one. The teachers here are very generous and caring so it's great to see them at work and learn from them!

Q: What were you like in middle school? A: I remember I had just started really getting into music and would spend a lot of time with my iPod in hand. I built lots of things with legos and even a bookshelf to display them all. I was a new kid coming into my middle school and I am still really appreciative of the friends who welcomed me in. My dad taught Spanish at my middle school and sometimes people would call me by his name which always really bothered me. Crazy how I am now a Mr. Wood too!

Q: What are you looking forward to in your career at St. Christopher ?s? A: I?m looking forward to seeing the seventh graders become better writers and thinkers over time. It?s really cool how St. Chris is a community where students get to be in touch with their teachers across generations.

Review By: Sam Hu bar d Northern Neck Burger Company (NNB), located on 303 Queen Street in Tappahannock, VA and on 62 Irvington Rd. Kilmarnock, Va, was voted Virginia?s best burger in 2017 by Top Virginia and The Richmond Times Dispatch. This restaurant is convenient to many people who are traveling, fishing, hunting, or just need a good American-style restaurant. NNB?s two locations make this place unique and located in no other state but Virginia. The menu of this restaurant consists of burgers, brews, and even their own signature side, the twisters. Every week, Northern Neck Burger has live music playing on stage, heaters, and built-in speakers for comfort if you don?t want to sit inside. This restaurant uses many new technology pieces such as the Self Handwashing Station, the Coca-Cola Freestyle Machine V.2, and buzzers to let you know when your food is ready. The actual food part of the restaurant has limitless possibilities . It consists of everything from burgers to shakes and cotton candy ? The food is impeccable and the live music is hard to beat. I myself really love this place after I have gone fishing or leaving the river with my dad. This is our go to place around and has a great atmosphere too. I suggest you (yes, you) go to this 5 star review southern restaurant.

Escape Room RV A v s. Break out Games

Com in g 2018

I've done one room by Breakout games (Kidnapping), and I've done multiple rooms from Escape Room RVA. Both were fun experiences. I think that I enjoyed Escape Room RVA's rooms more than Breakout Games. First of all the Breakout room was only one room. The rooms at Escape Room RVA had multiple rooms in them. The people at Escape Room RVA were also pretty lenient with their clue giving. At Breakout, if we used our three hints, we were done.

Overview 7th grade soccer is entry level competitive soccer for your school. Mr. Brown and Mr. Knight are our coaches. This year it seems that across the board everyone put their all into trying to get better as a player and as a person. We all showed some great sportsmanship. And overall we all had a great time and we really enjoyed a great season of fun soccer. In the end we finished with a record of 8-8-1.

Coaching As you may know , our coaches are Mr. Brown and Mr. Knight. Mr. Brown is the head coach of the team and he helps with formations, techniques, and style of play. Mr. Kinght is the assisant coach of the team and he loves to play soccer and help us get fit. He usually gets us pysched up before games and gives good emotional support. Mr Brown also always shows us great tips and pointers that benefit us greatly in games.

Close Games Our first close game was against, Steward in which we ended up tying them in a great through ball to Rex to finish the game. Our next close game was away at New Community, where we barely lost to them on a lucky shot. Our last close game was against St. Bridgett's who was a much better team, however, we clearly gave them all they could handle in a game we nearly tied up.

7t h Gr ade Soccer

Blowouts Our only blowout was when we beat Collegiate 4 -0. However, it was a good game because it was the first time kids could play where they wanted and not where they were needed. This allowed Chase, our all-time keeper to get an assist and Nicholas, our main sweeper, to score. Also, Conner and Cameron scored. But probably the funniest things was when Evan played keeper and was very enthusiastic.

Defense We had a lot of people play in the back but there were some main defenders. Nicholas, HI, and Luke were the main center backs of the defense. The outside backs were mainly Randolph, Mason, Holden, and Charlie. We also had Manoli and Bowen helping out with defense occasionally. Nicholas seemed to be the captain of the defense, while HI would always boot the ball out real far which made for good clearances.

Midfield There were many different midfielders on the team who played pretty well. Conner, Bowen, and Evan mostly played center midfield. Bowen also played at center denfensive mid along with Manoli. Ryan and Teddy also played on the wing. Some of the offensive minded players also played in midfiled like, Peyton, Matthew, Rex, and Cameron.

7t h Gr ade Soccer

Attack With Attack only a few people have the chance to play it but those who do are quite productive. Rex and Cameron usually play striker. While Matthew and Peyton play on the wings. Cameron and Rex were the main goal scorers for the team but Matthew and Peyton put in some nice assists.

Goalkeeper This year we had Chase in at goal for the 7th grade team. He kept us in many games that we probably shouldn't have been in. We also had Evan play in goal for a short period during the game against Collegiate. iIt was hilarious considering he would always scream keeper when grabbing a save.

Bench Activity Often times on the bench you will be sitting and watching the game when you feel shoes to begin to moisten as you notice Manoli or Rex is spraying your feet with the gatorade bottle. Then it turns into an all - out war with kids hosing down each others shoes at any given moment.

Air por t CEO Airport CEO is a 2D tycoon and management game released in late September of 2017. I t was created for PC and Mac, where you become the CEO (Chief Executive Officer) of your own airport. I n the game, the goal is to build an airport?s infrastructure, which includes adding everything from runways and taxiways, gates and tarmac, to constructing terminals with check-in, security, restaurants and shopping. You will operate the business side of the airport by hiring employees and executives, and booking contracts with airline companies and making sure that everything goes swimmingly by keeping an eye on budget and resources. You must cater to your passengers by maintaining short waiting times and by having nice and helpful staff everywhere and by making passengers feel safe, keeping any potential criminals out. Hopefully you won?t run into any problems such as employee or equipment malfunctions, bad weather causing massive delays or emergency landings. You will be responsible for when things go wrong and, of course, rich when things go right.

Destiny 2 Is it Wor t h Pick in g Up? by Evan DiCosm o & Walk er Allen

Destiny 2 is the sequel to the popular game Destiny. Destiny was an Online-only FPS (First Person Shooter) RPG (Role Playing Game) game made by Bungie, the creators of the hit series Halo. Some aspects of Destiny 2 are drastically different. When Bungie decided to make a new game, they built the game up from scratch and significantly changed the way the game feels. On release of Destiny 2, Bungie promised two expansions.

Dest in y 2 - con t in u ed Con s:

Pr os: - The PvP(player vs player) is easy to pick up - Game rewards working as a team - Many new and well designed areas - Added 4v4 to the PvP - Added 2 new game modes - Countdown (search and destroy) - Survival (team has set lives and first to run out losses)

-

-

Campaign is too easy Enemies are weak AI is bad Removed 6v6 in PvP Removed 3v3 in PvP Removed 2v2 in PvP Removed FFA(free for all) from PvP No incentive to grind for better gear You get old social space back, and new one has no use.

Conclusion Destiny 2 is a well made game. It strays away from its roots in PvE and has a new combat system, but it can still call itself a sequel. The PvP changes had the side effect of lowering the skill ceiling, so it is harder for skilled players to rise above the average player. The game had a lack of endgame content and had a problem with content time increasing. That is when a game has features that are only there to slow down you ability to beat the game. Destiny 2 does this in a bad way. They force you to play for a while before you get your sparrow (space motorcycle), and end game loot is blocked by weekly activities. The game was designed for the average player. This is not sustainable even with new expansions. Destiny 2 would not be successful without the original Destiny's previous successes.

Overall Rating: 7.5/10

T here are also legendaries from past games that you can now encounter. T hese legendaries range from Red and Blue up to X and Y, which di ffer for each game. I f you read the following previews, you might realize your favorite is missing. But don?t fear; i f you get two of a trio, the third will present itsel f. For example, i f you obtain D ialga in U ltra Sun and trade for Palkia with someone who has U ltra Moon, you can obtain Giratina. T he same goes for Zygarde (Yveltal (U M) and Xerneas (U S), Rayquaza (Groudon (U S) and Kyogre (U M) and many more. All in all, U ltra Moon and U ltra Sun will surely be full of surprises! Many songs were performed different ly. They were performed eit her w it h added improvisat ion, a different beat , or a different st yle.

Higher Love- Higher love w as one of Steve W inwood's most iconic and popular songs from t he 80?s. The orginal song feat ures a funky 80?s beat . The live show feat ured a slower tempo and interest ing lat in st yle. This song live w as bet ter t han t he original version and w as a rework of t he classic song. The Low Spark Of High Heeled Boys-The Low Spark of High Heeled Boysis a classic Traffic song. This song w as great live and followed t he closely original.
