The Cardinal Virtue of Prudence

“The prudent man looks where he is going.” Proverbs 14:15

As we look at each of the four cardinal and three theological virtues, we must remember that the virtues guide us on the path to true happiness in God.

As “queen of the moral virtues” according to Saint Thomas Aquinas, prudence perfects the practical intellect and crowns the cardinal virtues by orchestrating their movements. It works to perfect every action we undertake. Prudence isn’t merely about knowing the good, it’s about doing the good. I best heard it described as doing the right thing in the right way at the right time for the right reason.

In our common usage prudence connotes caution or shrewdness in business dealings. For example, if there is a risky business proposition, a prudent person advises against the ill fated course. But in the Christian tradition, prudence is classically understood as a practical wisdom that empowers one to be good and to act well in daily affairs, both ordinary and extraordinary, or as the Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC) quotes Aquinas:, “right reason in action.”

Prudence is responsible for sorting out the virtuous desires as it fashions a reasonable life and guides the judgment of conscience. Needless to say, we do not always act prudently. We are beautiful, wonderfully complex beings subject to a myriad of influences that can distract or thwart us by sin. Aquinas points out “sins” against prudence: acting rashly or hastily; acting thoughtlessly or mindlessly; acting irregularly or irrationally. He also reminds us however that grace builds on nature; in other words, God helps us to be the person we are supposed to be, and this is best accomplished through the sacraments. Through the supernatural gift of counsel, one of the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit, prudence is brought to perfection. The gift of counsel gives us access to divine reasons in making prudential judgments. We specially receive this gift through confirmation. Our fruitful reception of Holy Communion strengthens it. Our frequent use of the sacrament of penance heals it when it is damaged.

For examples of prudence in action, read Chapter 8 of the Book of Sirach.

May the good Lord bless you and yours richly, now and always and forever.
