LIFELINES

“The Catholic Church has a long history of service to those who are most vulnerable and remains the largest private provider of social services in the United States. Through the sacrificial efforts of faithful Catholics, the Church serves millions through diocesan ministries and agencies, Catholic hospitals and healthcare systems, immigration clinics, shelters, and Catholic schools and parishes. …The Church consistently bears witness in word and deed to the beauty and dignity of every human life including both mother and child.”

~ USCCB Committee Chairmen, “Standing with Moms in Need”

The Mystery of the Trinity

“The mystery of the Holy Trinity is the central mystery of the Christian faith and of the Christian life.”

Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC) 261

Sh’ma Yisra’eil Adonai Eloheinu Adonai echad

Hear O Israel, the LORD is our God, the LORD alone Deuteronomy 6:4

After Jesus was baptized, he came up from the water and behold, the heavens were opened for him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming upon him. And a voice came from the heavens, saying, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.” Matthew 3:16-17

We celebrate Trinity Sunday this week in recognition of the central mystery of our faith, the Holy Trinity, three Divine Persons, Father, Son and Holy Spirit in one God. This is a mystery not so much to be solved as to be reverenced, a reality too rich for our limited human minds to fully grasp: how the God who is totally beyond our comprehension can be present to us so closely and intimately throughout our lives.

Three times a day faithful Jews pray the Shema, the prayer that begins with the words of Deuteronomy 6:4 above. This prayer praises the unity and total otherness of our God. God revealed Himself first to the people of Israel as ONE, something unique in the pagan world of many gods and goddesses. Belief in the oneness of God set the people of Israel apart from the rest of the ancient world.

With the birth of Jesus of Nazareth, God the Son, the second Person of the Trinity became Man and revealed the nature of God the Father in relation to Himself as His only begotten Son. In the life of Jesus we also see the third Person of the Trinity, God the Holy Spirit, particularly in His Baptism by Saint John the Baptist, his cousin, in the Jordan River before Jesus began His three year public ministry as recorded in Matthew 3:16-17 above.

The doctrine of the Holy Trinity contains three revealed truths of the faith: there is only one God, not three gods; there are three distinct Divine Persons in this one God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, each fully God yet distinct from each other; and lastly, that the distinction of the three Persons derived from their relation to each other. The Father is not Father without the Son and the Son is not Son without the Father, nor is the Holy Spirit the Spirit without the Father and the Son from which the Spirit proceeds. This weekend, may we come to a greater sense of the complete transcendence of the Triune God and greater appreciation for His total immanence to us in the Mass.

May the Triune God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit bless you richly with His Love and Grace, now and always and forever.

Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam…To the Greater Glory of God

Father Kevin

NOTICE FROM THE OFFICE OF THE BISHOP

Deacon’s NOTE

‘For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son’. We believe that God intervened in human history and gave his only son to show that his a tude to us is that of a loving parent. God loves the world, loves each one of us, loves me.

This is the whole message of Jesus, expressed in his words and embodied, directly or indirectly, in the whole of his life. As one theologian has said about his message, 'There just isn't anything else'. Am I convinced of this myself?

Thanks. Deacon Ron
