Honours Bachelor of Sciences Programs in Statistics

The Department of Statistical Sciences offers several Statistics programs:

• Data Science Specialist with Computer Science

• Applied Data Science Minor with Computer Science

• Specialist in Statistical Science: Methods and Practice

• Specialist in Statistical Science: Theory and Methods

• Statistics Major

• Statistics Minor

In addition, the Arts & Science Internship Program (ASIP) stream is available to students enrolled in the Data Science Specialist, the Specialist in Statistical Science: Methods and Practice, and the Specialist in Statistical Science: Theory and Methods.

Students in Statistical Sciences’ programs of study use the tools of probability, statistical inference, and computation to make predictions and quantify uncertainty. Problem solving and professional practice skills in the context of realworld problems are woven throughout our programs.

Recent alumni have obtained positions in industry, government, and advanced academic programs, encompassing both tech and finance firms as well as master’s and PhD programs in statistics.

The explosion of interest in data science has triggered an accelerated expansion of the department’s inter-disciplinary research and a rapid growth of our community – from faculty to undergraduate and graduate students.

Mentorship Programs

STA130 Mentorship Program

The STA130 Mentorship Program is part of the introductory course for statistical sciences, actuarial science, or data science degrees. All STA130 students are automatically enrolled in this peer mentorship program.

Our current students are at the heart of the U of T Department of Statistical Sciences. Here’s what they have to say about their opportunity to get hands on research experiences.

Learn more:

Statistical Sciences Second-Year Learning Community (SLC)

A learning community for second-year students in the major or specialist programs. Upper-year mentors, faculty and professionals answer students’ questions on diverse topics including academic, grad school, and employment opportunities.

Statistical Science Alumni Mentorship

Program is part of the introductory course for statistical sciences, actuarial science, or data science degrees. First-year students are automatically enrolled in this peer mentorship program.

“As someone who initially wasn’t sure what area of statistics I wanted to pursue, U of T’s diverse and accessible professors made it really easy to have discussions with people/professors in a variety of fields to hone in on my interests. The opportunities to explore everything are at UofT.”

Sahil Patel, Statistics Alumni
Faculty of Arts and Science ASIP Program

ASA DataFest

DataFest is a global data analysis competition for undergraduate students organized by the American Statistical Association (ASA) and hosted by local universities/institutes. Students work on a dataset based on a real-world problem curated by the ASA and present findings to industry judges, with prizes for outstanding work.

Undergraduate Research

We offer a number of funded undergraduate research opportunities in statistics and data science:

• NSERC Undergraduate Student Research Awards (USRA)

• University of Toronto Excellence Awards (UTEA)

• Summer Undergraduate Research Award (SURA)

Before You Apply

Students are required to choose one admission category on their application. Students should apply to the Physical & Mathematical Science admission category on the St. George campus.

In your first year of study, you will take courses that are required for the program(s) you want to study in your second year, which means you will enrol in a program of study at the end of your first year. Programs at the Department of Statistical Sciences are accessible for the first time once a student has earned (or is currently completing) 4.0 credits.

We’re here to help you at each stage of the process. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to reach out.
