Since Opening Night on December 6, 1928, when the theatre promised “21 Peppy, Snappy Entertainers” with Paul Tremaine and his Aristocrats of Modern Music, The State Theatre’s iconic neon blade and marquee have illuminated the evening darkness of downtown Ithaca for 90 years, acting like a beacon for locals, students, and tourists coming together for an evening of live entertainment. Although admission no longer costs 50 cents, The State Theatre continues to enrich the cultural life of the Finger Lakes region as an historic venue for diverse programming.

State Theatre of Ithaca, Inc. is the nonprofit organization that operates Tompkins County’s premier venue for live entertainment. The 1,600 seat historic theatre hosts more than 80 events a year ranging from concerts and comedians to classic movies and beyond. Over the course of one season, more than 50,000 people will pass through these doors and over forty-percent of our patrons travel from outside Tompkins County to be here. Patrons attending State Theatre events generate millions of dollars each year for Ithaca’s local economy. They are shopping on The Commons, having dinner at local restaurants, going out for drinks after the show, and staying at our hotels, Inns, Bed & Breakfasts, and possibly even your Air B&B. his season, more than ever, it is with tremendous excitement that DSP Shows proudly welcomes you to the State Theatre of Ithaca!

Whether you’re a newcomer to the area or a longtime patron, we are thrilled to have you here with us for the theatre’s 90th Season!

90. That’s an incredible feat for any business let alone one as volatile as a performing arts theatre.

And this one has certainly had its fair share of ups and downs in the near century of existence.

Booking this venue is nearer and dearer to my heart than anything else we do here at DSP. Twelve years ago this building was in great despair and on the verge of going dark forever. But we have proven that amazing shows and amazing supporters can make any dream a reality. It’s been such an accomplishment for our city that I was even asked to make its resurrection the focus of a Ted talk a few years back.

Countless groups are responsible for keeping the State Theatre of Ithaca alive, and although they are major pieces to this puzzle, we believe that the most important and crucial aspect to this successful building is YOU! As patrons who frequent as many shows possible, you are the heart and soul of this special venue. And by also supporting all the aspects of the Ithaca music scene whether it be the other venues in and around town, summer concert series or festivals throughout the region, we continue to grow as a world class destination for live entertainment. And it is only through your continued patronage that you’ve helped us solidify Ithaca on the touring map for so many incredible artists, like the ones coming to us this fall and beyond.

And what a lineup we have in store for this 90th season so far! Six decades after becoming a regular on the coffee house scene that was emerging around Club 47 in Cambridge, MA, Joan Baez determined that “2018 will be my last year of formal extended touring.”

With her 2017 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction topping off a lifetime of awards and honors for her recordings and human rights achievements around the globe, the symmetry of Joan’s decision reverberates.

It’s like Whose Line Is It Anyway, only it’s Whose LIVE Anyway. Enjoy a completely improvised 90-minute show of games, scenes and songs that will tickle not only your funny bone, but every bone in your body. Bring your suggestions and you might be asked to join the cast onstage!

A BRIEF HISTORY

S

OF THE STATE THEATRE

ince 1928, The State Theatre of Ithaca has served as one of the most significant venues for performing arts in the Finger Lakes region. With its 1,600-seat capacity, it has long been the largest venue of its kind in Ithaca, New York. According to the History Center of Tompkins County, downtown Ithaca once boasted seven grand theaters, including the Lyceum, the Crescent, and the Strand. A longstanding community destination for Ithacans and surrounding residents, The State Theatre is the last remaining historic performing arts theatre in all of Tompkins County.

The building dates back to 1915. Designed by local architect Henry N. Hinckley, it was originally an auto garage and dealership, specializing in Studebakers. In the mid 20’s, two Cornell Alumni, Lewis Henry ’09 and A.F. McCann, created Cornell Theatres. Inc. In 1926, Cornell Theatres, Inc. purchased this build- Photo: Jon Reis Photography, 1976 ing and hired celebrated theatre architect Victor Rigaumont to design and oversee the transformation of the garage and showroom into an atmospheric cinema and vaudeville palace.

Rigaumont incorporated elements of the Moorish and Renaissance Revival Styles and the Collegiate Gothic symbolism of their alma matter to create a magical haven for theatre and moviegoers. Opening night on December 6, 1928 was a memorable and entertaining spectacle featuring Paul Tremaine and his Aristocrats of Modern Music. The show promised “21 Peppy, Snappy Entertainers” and admission cost 50 cents.

The State Theatre flourished as a premier en-

tertainment venue and was a source of great pride to Tompkins County residents for many decades.

Beginning with vaudeville, the theater has evolved with the times. When movies became more popular in the early 1930s, the theater thrived primarily as a cinema house. After World War II, with the advent of television and suburban movie houses, downtown cinema palaces like the State struggled. To adapt, the owners added a second movie screen in 1976, dividing the balcony from the main house.

In 1977, the theatre screened Star Wars, and boasts all forms of live entertainment today.

When the movie business alone could no longer support the building, the owner considered demolition. In the mid-90’s, a major infusion of community volunteerism and seed money from the Finger Lakes GrassRoots Festival of Music and Dance allowed for the removal of the balcony wall and a return to theatrical programming. If you look up from the front of the balcony, you can still see a visible line where this dividing wall met the ceiling. For three years, the Ithaca Performing Arts Center (IPAC) produced a broad range of shows, from local theater troupes to world–renowned musicians and touring Broadway shows. Lacking adequate capital, IPAC was unable to maintain the aging infrastructure and the building was eventually deemed unsafe to occupy. The tenure of IPAC, however, proved that there was a demand for larger theatre-sized events as long as the venue could be kept open with additional community support.

On May 5th 1998, Historic Ithaca acquired the building and applied its expertise in preser-

vation to revitalize the structure. A new roof (with thermal insulation!) was installed, historic plasterwork was stabilized and repaired, lighting and electrical systems were updated, and the organization learned how to run a theatre. Strong community support bolstered the first phase of the project and secured desperately needed funding from municipal, foundation and private donors. In 1999, the American Institute of Architects recognized the State Theatre as one of the 60 Most Significant Architectural Landmarks in New York State. The building was added to The National Register of Historic Places a few years later.

In the spring of 2009, The State Theatre of Ithaca, Inc., a newly formed 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization, purchased the State Theatre from Historic Ithaca. This allowed Historic Ithaca to return to its core mission of promoting architectural preservation programs and services in the Ithaca community. As the caretakers of this beautiful building, we take great pride in the architectural genius, outstanding acoustics, and exquisite ornamentation that can be found throughout the hall. We are also extremely grateful to Historic Ithaca, IPAC and all the other people and organizations that have helped shepherd this building. Without them, this community gem would have been demolished many years ago.

Since taking over in 2009, this organization has invested over $1 million into this building. The primary restrooms on the balcony level were completely renovated during the summer of 2015 allowing us to increase capacity while discovering some costsavings from installing more efficient fixtures. If you’ve attended events here prior to 2015, we’re confident that you’ll agree that the new restrooms are a huge improvement!

This past summer, we improved the quality of experience for visitors to the State Theatre, particularly those who require greater accessibility to our venue. Prior to this season, only five of our seats were ADA compliant. We have now increased that number to 13 seats. The completion of this project means that we have an even more inclusive environment and we will continue to fulfill our mission of enhancing the visitor experience here while preserving our historic space.

In addition to our restroom renovation and accessibility project, there are dozens of other major repairs and renovations that have been completed behind-the-scenes, helping to ensure a safe, comfortable experience at The State Theatre. Future projects are planned to increase the efficiency and enjoyment of this building even more. If you would like to get involved with any of these projects, please let us know. The State Theatre helps Ithaca define its own traditions and identity through shared cultural experience. We always welcome your thoughts and will continue to rely upon your support to ensure that the theatre provides this community with the finest performances, venue, and patron experience possible.

BOX OFFICE POLICIES

When the Box Office receives your order, you will be assigned the seats you’ve chosen or the next best, unless you specify otherwise. Tickets will be mailed, unless the performance is less than 10 days away, in which case they will be held in paid reservations (will call). When you receive your tickets, check them carefully and let us know immediately if you have any concerns.

EVERY PERSON, REGARDLESS OF AGE, MUST HAVE A TICKET TO BE ADMITTED TO A PERFORMANCE. THERE CAN BE NO EXCEPTIONS NO REFUNDS

The only circumstance when a refund for tickets or ticket processing fees will be allowed is when The State Theatre cancels a performance.

EXCHANGES

State Theatre Members may exchange their tickets for another event provided they do so within 48 hours of the event. There can be no exchanges the day of the show, and no exchanges will be permitted for single ticket buyers. Exchanges must be of equal value or the buyer must pay the difference for a higher ticket price exchange.

Exchanges for tickets of a lesser value are not eligible for a refund of the difference.

LOST TICKETS

GIFT CERTIFICATES

State Theatre gift certificates are available in any denomination and can be used for nearly all shows.

They’re not redeemable for concessions or alcohol.

They are available at the State Theatre Box Office.

INCLEMENT WEATHER POLICY

If a performance takes place, despite weather conditions, The State Theatre will not issue refunds to patrons who did not attend. When in doubt, call 607-277-8283 to confirm a performance.

LATE SEATING

Late seating of patrons is often disruptive to audience members seated on a timely basis. Therefore, patrons arriving late for a performance may be required to stand or sit in a pre-designated area of the theatre until intermission or until an appropriate break allows seating without disruption to the performance and our patrons.

SERVICES FOR THE DISABLED

Seating for the physically challenged (those not limited to a wheelchair) is available in all orchestra sections.

Wheelchair and companion seating is available in the right and left orchestra sections. Please specify wheelchair seating or describe any special needs when ordering your tickets. We currently are not able to provide audio description or sign interpretation for most events, however we can accommodate requests for small groups. Please call the theatre office for hearing or visually impaired requests.
