Thank you for spending your time with us today. The State Theatre is located in the heart of downtown Ithaca, less than a block from our newly renovated Commons. Not only is this building listed on the National Register of Historic Places, it is also one of Ithaca’s most beloved landmarks because of the memories it holds for the thousands of people that visit us each year. You may have performed on our stage as a child, attended your first rock concert here, perhaps you had your first date, or even your first kiss up in the balcony.

Whether this is your first visit, or you have returned to experience the magic of The State anew, welcome!

State Theatre of Ithaca, Inc. is the 501(c)3 not-for-profit organization that owns and operates Tompkins County’s premier venue for live entertainment. Our 1,625 seat historic theatre hosts more than 80 events a year ranging from concerts to comedians to classic movies and beyond! Over the course of one season, over 55,000 people will pass through our doors, with over 40% of our patrons traveling from beyond Tompkins County. Whether they’re coming from a short or long distance, patrons attending State Theatre events generate millions of dollars each year for local businesses. They are walking around The Commons, shopping in our stores, having dinner at local restaurants, going out for drinks after the show and staying at our hotels, inns, bed & breakfasts, and possibly even your air B&B. Like almost every other historic theater, the cost of running and maintaining The State is not covered by ticket sales. We must rely on additional financial assistance to meet our annual needs. By purchasing a ticket to an event here, you have already taken your first step in supporting this theatre. Please consider an additional gift. Every donation, whatever its size, helps this organization continue to make vital improvements to this building which allows us to continue to bring world class talent to downtown Ithaca.

Last summer, we were able to complete a major renovation of our primary restroom facilities that has nearly doubled the number of fixtures and tripled the amount of hand washing stations. It’s scary to think that it’s my (our) ninth year booking this great venue!

To think back on how many great shows have played Ithaca is mind-boggling! And without your support and attendance it would have been impossible. So let me begin by saying thank you… because buying tickets to shows is the most basic way you can support and enhance this amazing building.

We’ve grown a ton over these 9 years here at DSP. What started as a dream of simply saving the State has grown to over 300 shows a year from Boston to Buffalo and everywhere in between.

And all that volume only creates more opportunities for Ithaca. This fall our lineup is so incredibly diverse and looking at the shows as a whole feels amazing. From Rock and Roll Hall of Famers like Graham Nash to up and comers like Glass Animals and Sturgill Simpson, stalwarts like Andrew Bird and Dark Star Orchestra, to one of only a handful Regina Spektor dates in the US we have it all on offer for you this season. And there is so much more to come in the Spring!

State Theatre of Ithaca, Inc. is a non-profit organization dedicated to the stewardship and management of the historic State Theatre. The State Theatre first opened its doors in 1928 hosting vaudeville shows including dance, comedy, and singing, interspersed with newsreels, cartoons, and short-subject silent films. Almost 90 years later, The State continues to host a broad array of performers and talent, including rock bands, comedians, jazz musicians, film, flamenco, country, and children’s performers.

Our 7th Annual “Benefit My State” event is a fun opportunity to experience an exciting night of world-class entertainment while supporting and celebrating The State Theatre. Like all non-profit theaters, we can’t rely on ticket sales alone. The funds we raise through this event will help ensure a healthy future for The State and keep us at the center of the community’s performing arts scene.

Water on Mars is a new circus performance with six hands and thousands of catches. The tricks are as physical as break dance and as stylized as Japanese pop art. The trio brings a performance full of dynamic airborne images. 100 rings are thrown, backflips are landed, feet are twisted, water is flipped, 21 balls are juggled and 15 clubs spin around the 3 bodies while an electro beat keep the rhythm.

A BRIEF HISTORY

T

OF THE STATE THEATRE

he State Theatre is the last remaining cinema and vaudeville palace in downtown Ithaca. According to the History Center of Tompkins County, downtown Ithaca once boasted seven grand theaters, including the Lyceum, the Crescent, and the Strand. With its 1,609 seat capacity, it is also one of the area’s most significant arts venues. The building dates back to 1915. Designed by local architect Henry N. Hinckley, it was originally an auto garage and dealership, specializing in Studebakers.

In 1926, Cornell Theatres, Inc. purchased the building and hired celebrated theatre architect Victor Rigaumont to design and oversee the transformation of the garage and showroom into an atmospheric cinema and vaudeville palace. Rigaumont incorporated elements of the Moorish and Renaissance Revival Styles and the Collegiate Gothic symbolism of Cornell University to create a magical haven for theatre and moviegoers. Opening night on December 6, 1928 was a memorable and entertaining spectacle featuring Paul Tremaine and his Aristocrats of Modern Music. The show promised “21 Peppy, Snappy Entertainers” and admission cost 50 cents.

The State Theatre flourished as a premier entertainment venue and was a source of great pride to Tompkins County residents for many decades. Beginning with vaudeville, the theater has evolved with the times. When movies became more popular in the early 1930s, the theater thrived primarily as a cinema house. After World War II, with the advent of television and suburban movie houses, downtown cinema palaces like the State struggled. To adapt, the owners added a second movie screen in 1976, dividing the balcony from the main house.

When the movie business alone could no longer support the building, the owner considered demolition. In the mid-90’s, a major infusion of community volunteerism and seed money from the Finger Lakes GrassRoots Festival allowed for the removal of the balcony wall and a return to theatrical programming. If you look up from the front of the balcony, you can still see a visible line where this dividing wall met the ceiling. For three years the Ithaca Performing Arts Center (IPAC) produced a broad range of shows, from local theater troupes to world–renowned musicians and touring Broadway shows.

Lacking adequate capital, IPAC was unable to maintain the aging infrastructure and the building was eventually deemed unsafe to occupy.

The tenure of IPAC, however, proved that there was a demand for larger theatre-sized events as long as the venue could be kept open with additional community support.

On May 5th 1998, Historic Ithaca acquired the building and applied its expertise in preservation to revitalize the structure.

A new roof (with thermal insulation!) was installed, historic plasterwork was stabilized and repaired, lighting and electrical systems were updated, and the organization learned how to run a theatre.

Strong community support bolstered the first phase of the project and secured desperately needed funding from municipal, foundation and private donors. In 1999, the American Institute of Architects recognized the State Theatre as one of the most significant architectural landmarks in New York State. The building was added to The National Register of Historic Places a few years later.

In the spring of 2009, The State Theatre of Ithaca, Inc., a newly formed 501(c)(3) notfor-profit organization, purchased the State

Theatre from Historic Ithaca. This allowed Historic Ithaca to return to its core mission of promoting architectural preservation programs and services in the Ithaca community. As the caretakers of this beautiful building, we take great pride in the architectural genius, outstanding acoustics, and exquisite ornamentation that can be found throughout the hall. We are also extremely grateful to Historic Ithaca, IPAC and all of the other people and organizations that have helped shepherd this building.

Without them, this community gem would have been demolished many years ago.

Since taking over in 2009, this organization has invested well over $750,000 into this building. Most notably, the primary restrooms on the balcony level were completely renovated during the summer of 2015 allowing us to increase capacity while discovering some cost-savings from installing more efficient fixtures.

If you’ve attended events here prior to last season, we’re confident that you’ll agree that the new restrooms are a huge improvement!

W i t h assistance from communityminded supporters, consisting of both foundations and individual donors, we have been able to repair and repaint a significant portion of the damaged plaster that was highly visible throughout the interior of the theatre. Now the interior of this beautiful, historic gem is back to its

original 1928 grandeur. There are dozens of other major repairs and renovations that have been completed behind-the-scenes, helping to ensure a safe, comfortable experience at The State Theatre. Future projects are planned to increase the efficiency of this building even more. If you would like to get involved with any of these projects, please let us know. We always welcome your thoughts and will continue to rely upon your support to ensure that the theatre provides this community with the finest performances, venue, and patron experience possible.

• Tuesday through Friday 10 am to 5 pm • Saturday 11 am to 4pm • On Sunday and Monday performance days, The State Theatre Box Office opens two hours before doors open, and will remain open until one hour past curtain.

BOX OFFICE POLICIES

When the Box Office receives your order, you will be assigned the seats you’ve chosen or the next best, unless you specify otherwise. Tickets will be mailed, unless the performance is less than 10 days away, in which case they will be held in paid reservations (will call). When you receive your tickets, check them carefully and let us know immediately if you have any concerns.

EVERY PERSON, REGARDLESS OF AGE, MUST HAVE A TICKET TO BE ADMITTED TO A PERFORMANCE. THERE CAN BE NO EXCEPTIONS NO REFUNDS

The only circumstance when a refund for tickets or ticket processing fees will be allowed is when The State Theatre cancels a performance.

EXCHANGES

Subscribers and members may exchange their tickets for another event provided they do so within 48 hours of the event. There can be no exchanges the day of the show, and no exchanges will be permitted for single ticket buyers. Exchanges must be of equal value or the buyer must pay the difference for a higher ticket price exchange.

Exchanges for tickets of a lesser value are not eligible for a refund of the difference.

LOST TICKETS

GIFT CERTIFICATES

State Theatre gift certificates are available in any denomination and can be used for nearly all shows.

They’re not redeemable for concessions or alcohol.

They are available at the State Theatre Box Office.

INCLEMENT WEATHER POLICY

If a performance takes place, despite weather conditions, The State Theatre will not issue refunds to patrons who did not attend. When in doubt, call 607-277-8283 to confirm a performance.

LATE SEATING

Late seating of patrons is often disruptive to audience members seated on a timely basis. Therefore, patrons arriving late for a performance may be required to stand or sit in a pre-designated area of the theatre until intermission or until an appropriate break allows seating without disruption to the performance and our patrons.

SERVICES FOR THE DISABLED

Seating for the physically challenged (those not limited to a wheelchair) is available in all orchestra sections.

Wheelchair and companion seating is available in the right and left orchestra sections. Please specify wheelchair seating or describe any special needs when ordering your tickets. We currently are not able to provide audio description or sign interpretation for most events, however we can accommodate requests for small groups. Please call the theatre office for hearing or visually impaired requests.

There is a designated smoking area outside of the theatre and clear of the entrances.
