State Theatre of Ithaca, Inc. is the 501(c)3 not-for-profit organization that owns and operates downtown Ithaca’s last remaining historic performing arts venue. As Executive Director of this organization, I am so proud of the progress we have made over the past six years and look forward to even more success this season. With just over 1,600 seats, The State Theatre now hosts over 85 events each year, including concerts, theatrical productions, comedy shows, community performances, classic movies and more.

We expect over 60,000 people to attend events here this season. Just like almost every other historic theater, the cost of running and maintaining The State is not covered by ticket sales. Greetings and welcome to the 2015/16 Season at the State Theatre of Ithaca!

As always it’s a pleasure to welcome you to The State Theatre of Ithaca! What a season we have in store for you in 2015-2016. Booking this venue is nearer and dearer to my heart than anything else we do here at DSP. Nine years ago this building was in great despair and on the verge of going dark forever. But we have proven that amazing shows and amazing supporters can make any dream a reality and as Lyle Lovett once said on this very stage, “Too many wonderful and historic theatres have become parking lots and 7-11’s – I am so glad that didn’t happen to this one.” And he went on to thank those behind this wonderful project.

Many people have chipped in to keep the dream of State Theatre of Ithaca, Inc. alive, and I am always happy to acknowledge them all, but from my perspective the most important and crucial aspect to a successful building is YOU the patrons frequenting as many shows as you can. And boy am I excited about the amazing talents this fall and beyond. From Grammy winners like Norah Jones, to rock favorites Wilco to comedic geniuses like Paula Poundstone there’s truly something for everyone, as always, here at the State. Learn about the acts you may now know – i.e. Scott Bradlee’s Postmodern Jukebox and Home Free thru our website and the links there. Spread the word for us through your social media channels. Not only are you supporting great shows and this great theater but you are keeping the tickets costs down when we have to spend less on advertising. Remember this is YOUR State Theatre. Own it. In addition to the top name headliners and comedians we present as DSP here at the State, we are honored to book the shows presented by The State Theatre of Ithaca as well for the ninth straight season. We’ve chosen to roll them out a few at a time this year rather than all at once, so watch for many more to come. But get excited for the return of The Very Hungry Caterpillar as well as the amazing magician Jeff McBride, debuts from Jungle Jack Hanna and Mark Nizer and so many more! It’s truly gonna be a great season here!

A BRIEF HISTORY

OF THE STATE THEATRE

ccording to the History Center of Tompkins County, downtown Ithaca once boasted seventeen grand theaters, including the Lyceum, the Crescent, and the Strand. The State Theatre is the last remaining cinema and vaudeville palace in Ithaca. With its 1,609 seat capacity, it is also one of the area’s most significant arts venues. The building dates back to 1915. Designed by local architect Henry N. Hinckley, it was originally an auto garage and dealership.

In 1926, Cornell Theatres, Inc. purchased the building and hired celebrated theatre architect Victor Rigaumont to design and oversee the transformation of the garage and showroom into an atmospheric cinema and vaudeville palace. Rigaumont incorporated elements of the Moorish and Renaissance Revival Styles and the Collegiate Gothic symbolism of Cornell University to create a magical haven for theatre and moviegoers. Opening night, December 6, 1928, was a memorable and entertaining spectacle featuring Paul Tremaine and his Aristocrats of Modern Music. The show promised “21 Peppy, Snappy Entertainers” and admission cost 50 cents.

The State Theatre flourished as a premier entertainment venue and was a source of great pride to Tompkins County residents for many decades. Beginning with vaudeville, the theater has evolved with the times.

When movies became more popular in the early 1930s, the theater thrived primarily as a cinema house. After World War II, with the advent of television and suburban movie houses, downtown cinema palaces like the State struggled. To adapt, the owners added a second movie screen in 1976, dividing the balcony from the main house. If you look up

from the front of the balcony, you can still see a visible line where this dividing wall met the ceiling.

Ultimately, the theater closed in the 1980s because of financial difficulties and the demands of long-deferred maintenance. Attempts to revive the theater over the next fifteen years failed, though the community succeeded in having the theater listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1996. Finally, in 1997, the theater was condemned by the City of Ithaca because of serious roof damage, a failing heating and ventilation system, and the safety hazards caused by falling plaster and out-of-date electrical systems. The owners seriously, though reluctantly, considered demolition.

Community anxiety about the State Theatre was intense. For the State Theatre to be lost was widely considered unacceptable. But saving the State was an immense task: how could it be done?

In the Spring of 1998, Historic Ithaca responded to the community’s distress signal. With community support, the organization purchased the failing structure and assumed the role of preservationist, developer and manager, establishing the State Theatre Restoration Project. Historic Ithaca staff and volunteers galvanized public support and accepted the daunting task of reversing the building’s condemnation. This included replacement or serious repair of the main roof, the dangerously disintegrated plaster walls, the outdated electrical systems, the fire detection system, and the heating and ventilation systems.

Strong community support bolstered this first phase of the project and secured desperately needed funding from municipal, foundation and private donors; leaders from the business, arts, preservation and political communities were involved. In 1999, the American

Institute of Architects recognized the State Theatre as one of the most significant architectural landmarks in New York State.

Between 1998 and December 2001, Phase I of the State Theatre Restoration Project was completed.

After years of community effort the State Theatre regained its occupancy permit, and with great anticipation the theater re-opened with gala festivities on December 5, 2001. Every seat was full, as young and old came together in a joyous celebration of community.

In the spring of 2009, The State Theatre of Ithaca, Inc., a newly formed 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization, purchased the State Theatre from Historic Ithaca. This allowed Historic Ithaca to return to its core mission of promoting architectural preservation programs and services in the Ithaca community. As the new caretakers of this beautiful building, we take great pride in the architectural genius, outstanding acoustics, and exquisite ornamentation that can be found throughout the hall. On behalf of the State Theatre of Ithaca, Inc. we ask you to join us in extending our appreciation to Historic Ithaca for all their hard work and dedication throughout their twelve years of ownership. Without them, this community gem would have been demolished many years ago.

As we open our doors this fall, many patrons have noted how the theatre is in the best condition they have ever seen. The entire front entrance, including the plaster ceiling under the marquee, has been renovated, and many other improvements have been made to the lobby, including the repainting of all of the wood beams throughout. The tiny light bulbs in the ceiling of the theatre have been replaced, so once again the “stars” can come out at night. In January 2010, major upgrades were completed to the stage and fly-gallery. A $92,000 rigging project added 13 counterweight line sets to the existing system allowing greater programming options and a more professional production space.

An insulated load-in door was also added to the stage to seal a major air leak, ensuring an ambient stage temperature during performances and saving significant money on energy. A new handicap accessible drinking fountain was installed which was generously funded by a grant from The Rotary Club of Ithaca. A popcorn machine was introduced to our concessions stand, immediately doubling our food sales. And most notably, a major renovation project was recently completed to repair and repaint a significant portion of the damaged plaster throughout the interior of the theatre. Future projects include a complete renovation of both upstairs restrooms, a redesign of our bar and concessions area and replacing our inoperative 1936 air conditioning system to allow us to extend our season a full 12 months. If you would like to get involved with any of these projects, please let us know. We always welcome your thoughts and will continue to rely upon your support to ensure that the theatre provides this community with the finest performances, venue, and patron experience possible.

BOX OFFICE POLICIES

When the Box Office receives your order, you will be assigned the seats you’ve chosen or the next best, unless you specify otherwise. Tickets will be mailed, unless the performance is less than 10 days away, in which case they will be held in paid reservations (will call). When you receive your tickets, check them carefully and let us know immediately if you have any concerns.

EVERY PERSON, REGARDLESS OF AGE, MUST HAVE A TICKET TO BE ADMITTED TO A PERFORMANCE. THERE CAN BE NO EXCEPTIONS NO REFUNDS

The only circumstance when a refund for tickets or ticket processing fees will be allowed is when The State Theatre cancels a performance.

EXCHANGES

Subscribers and members may exchange their tickets for another event provided they do so within 48 hours of the event. There can be no exchanges the day of the show, and no exchanges will be permitted for single ticket buyers. Exchanges must be of equal value or the buyer must pay the difference for a higher ticket price exchange.

Exchanges for tickets of a lesser value are not eligible for a refund of the difference.

LOST TICKETS

The Box Office can reprint your tickets provided you have the credit card used for the purchase or the transaction information. Call us at 607-277-8283 to replace your lost tickets.

GIFT CERTIFICATES

State Theatre gift certificates are available in any denomination and can be used for nearly all shows.

They’re not redeemable for concessions or alcohol.

They are available at the State Theatre Box Office.

INCLEMENT WEATHER POLICY

If a performance takes place, despite weather conditions, The State Theatre will not issue refunds to patrons who did not attend. When in doubt, call 607-277-8283 to confirm a performance.

LATE SEATING

Late seating of patrons is often disruptive to audience members seated on a timely basis. Therefore, patrons arriving late for a performance may be required to stand or sit in a pre-designated area of the theatre until intermission or until an appropriate break allows seating without disruption to the performance and our patrons.

SERVICES FOR THE DISABLED

Seating for the physically challenged (those not limited to a wheelchair) is available in all orchestra sections.

Wheelchair and companion seating is available in the right and left orchestra sections. Please specify wheelchair seating or describe any special needs when ordering your tickets. We currently are not able to provide audio description or sign interpretation for most events, however we can accommodate requests for small groups. Please call the theatre office for hearing or visually impaired requests.

Food scrap recycling is offered at six sites in Tompkins County, and plans to expand the program are in the works. lined kitchen caddy. When it is full, they remove the liner and contents and place it in the transportation container. On a regular basis, residents bring these full containers to a drop spot for recycling. These toolkits have also been handed out at several community events this summer.

Data collected through July shows the six drop spots in Ithaca, Lansing, Dryden, Cayuga Heights and Trumansburg have diverted 100 tons of organic material and compostable paper from the landfill thus far in 2015.

“This program is in its initial start-up phase and is

still growing. Cumulatively, there are approximately 1,000 visitors per month [at the collection sites], and from January to July this year our community has diverted over 100 tons of material at these sites,” says Eckstrom.

Material from this program is processed through a partnership with Cayuga Compost in Trumansburg (on Agard Road), and the finished product is marketed as a soil amendment— essentially compost—to landscapers, farmers, and homeowners.

This growth in the number of people doing food scrap recycling is one

aspect of Tompkins County’s recycling efforts that recently received high marks in an audit by the New York State Comptroller’s Office.

The audit examined performance measures of the Solid Waste Management Division from Jan. 1, 2013, to July 7, 2014. It concluded that the various recycling programs implemented have been successful in reducing waste collected at the landfill, while saving the county more than $1.4 million since 2011.

The audit found that 43,532 tons of waste was diverted from the landfill during the period examined, or the equivalent of the annual greenhouse gas emissions from 23,539 passenger vehicles. The county projects to achieve an average of 3.3 pounds of waste per person per day in 2014, much lower than the state average of 4.5 pounds per person.

To improve the program, this fall a new bay will be constructed for the residential food scraps drop-off area at the Recycling and Solid Waste Center (RSWC) in Ithaca. The Tompkins County Legislature earlier this month awarded McPherson Builders of Ithaca the contract for the project, which will also inPlease turn to page 16

The Finger Lakes region is blessed with more than 100 independent breweries, wineries, cideries and distilleries, plus a vibrant variety of farms, artisanal food producers and restaurants. Yet not everyone can afford to take advantage of our region’s bounty, a situation that the Healthy Foods For All (HFFA) program hopes to remedy.

HFFA (www.healthyfoodforall.org) is a non-profit program that subsidizes organic farm shares for families with limited incomes. Last year they provided half-price CSA shares to some 150 families. Their goal is to expand that number to include any qualified family that applies. To reach that goal, HFFA is partnering with craft brewers and chefs of the Finger Lakes for “Savor the Finger Lakes” on Thursday, Sept. 3, at the Ithaca Farmers Market.

This fundraising event will feature regional craft beers and ciders along with delicious artisanal food; plus live music and the beautiful scenery of Cayuga Lake. All proceeds will go to HFFA to expand their program.

“This is shaping up to be a fantastic event,” HFFA director Elizabeth Karabinakis says. “Our Harvest Dinners have been really popular, and have been a means for raising funds to subsidize farm shares. Our farmers

recognized the emerging trend of small independent craft breweries and cideries throughout the Finger Lakes, so we wanted to showcase them, and developed this Savor the Finger Lakes event.”

Tickets are $75 for general admission (doors open at 5 p.m.), or $100 for VIPs (4 p.m. early entrance, guided pairings and boat tour). There is also an All-Inclusive VIP Package for $570 (two VIP tickets and lodging, plus next day Finger Lakes food, beverage and boat excursions). “Everyone participating is donating their time and goods, so 100 percent of the proceeds can go to subsidizing CSA shares for income eligible families,” says Karabinakis. “This helps families who are struggling to afford food be able to get local and organic produce.” This also helps counter findings that healthy food is often more expensive, whereas refined grains, added sugars, and fats are generally inexpensive and readily available in low-income communities.

Karabinakis emphasizes that while HFFA is primarily about food access for low-income families, it is also an important way for farmers to support their communities. “HFFA is farmer-

driven, and a vehicle for making farmers change agents,” she says.

“Farmers have the capacity to end hunger in their communities, yet traditionally they're not included in food security initiatives. This event leverages farmers’ social and professional networks, and provides an opportunity for everyone along the chain of production to support locally the change they want to see in the world.”

“Currently, we have 11 farms and 150 families in Tompkins County participating in the program,” says Jan Quarles, a volunteer with HFFA. “I think this is the only program that tries to increase access to locally produced organic food. The families bring their children to the farm, so the kids get to see where their food comes from. They get to harvest food right from the land, which gets them much more interested in eating healthy food,” she says.

The chefs who are involved with Savor the Finger Lakes will make unique, locally sourced food pairings that will go well with the local beer and cider, according to Quarles. “The Finger Lakes now has over 60 craft beer makers, and over 12 cideries. So that’s what we’re showcasing with this event,” she says.
