Lost & Found

• The orchestra level is wheelchair accessible. You can make arrangements for accessible seating through the Ticket Office when purchasing tickets.

• If you discover that you have lost something during the performance, please contact the Theatre Manager in the lobby or call the theater at 732-247-7200, ext. 521.

• The theater is equipped with an assistive listening system that improves sound clarity and amplification. The lightweight, wireless headsets may be borrowed free of charge at coat check.

Guests are required to leave a photo ID as collateral when borrowing a listening device.

Concessions

• Guests who arrive after a performance has begun will be held in the lower lobby and will be seated at the discretion of the Theatre Manager during an appropriate break in the performance.

Please note this may not be until intermission, so guests should always plan to arrive early. Guests who must leave the theater during a performance are encouraged to do so during a break in the performance, and are subject to being held in the lobby until an appropriate break in the performance as deemed per management.

A Message from the President and CEO Dear Friends, Welcome to the 90th season of your State Theatre. If you enjoy the performance you are about to see; please tell your friends and family so that they too might experience the thrill of the performances we offer. Two notable things this season which we want to call to your attention are: • The launching of a new HD Program featuring world renowned opera and ballet companies captured in live HD and our presentations of classic and Indie Films.

• The addition of many more live performances and collaborations with other arts organization as we ramp up our live programming and variety of our offerings.

Our mission is to present a vast variety of the arts from across the country and around the world in every genre and format, classical to pop, and always striving to keep ticket prices reasonable. To that end our excellent Board of Trustees, headed for the second year by our Chairman Warren Zimmerman, works diligently to raise millions of dollars each season in partnership with our great management team.

This fundraising is also crucial to the maintenance of our education programs here and across our great state. We know these are difficult times for many people, but please try to include the State for a donation this year. We have been balancing our budget of late and we want to keep it that way! Thank you.

About the Artists BILLY BRANCH & THE SONS OF BLUES Billy Branch, Chicago Blues Ambassador Billy Branch was born in Chicago, but his family moved to Los Angeles when he was five years old. In the summer of 1969, the 17year-old Branch returned to Chicago to attend the University of Illinois. This shy political science major by day was inextricably drawn to the vibrant Chicago Blues scene. By night he immersed himself in the music. He regularly got his head cut by harmonica legends like James Cotton and Junior Wells in famous Blues joints like the Queen Bee, Theresa’s Lounge, and the Checkerboard. This regular head cutting by Cotton and Wells didn’t discourage him; it inspired him to play his harmonica relentlessly, sometimes to the chagrin of his fellow students who hid his harmonica so they could study! His shameless tenacity and bulldog perseverance finally won him a place in the back seat of Cotton’s car, and in the company of Jr. Wells’ for private head-cutting sessions that helped him hone his skills while closely studying the styles of his mentors. In 1975, Branch was noticed by the Chicago Blues power brokers at the now infamous harmonica battle with Little Mac Simmons at the Green Bunny Club. A raucous crowd declared Branch the winner screaming, “Give him the money!” Although Branch never received the prize money, his achievement was well noted.

Willie Dixon took notice of Branch during this time period; however Dixon encouraged Branch to finish his college education. Instead of going to law school after receiving his political science degree, Branch began touring with Dixon’s Chicago All-Stars. This gave Branch the unique opportunity to travel and work as an under-study for the legendary Carey Bell, who was planning to leave the AllStars and form his own band. When Bell took his leave, the young Branch took his place, touring with Dixon for six years.

Since those early days, Branch has played on over 100 different recordings, including 12 under his own name. He’s recorded with

Dixon, Johnny Winter, Lou Rawls, Koko Taylor, Eddy Clearwater, Honeyboy Edwards, Lurrie Bell, Ronnie Baker Brooks, and Taj Mahal. He has received two Grammy® nominations and currently serves on the Grammy® Board of Governors. In addition, he has won multiple W.C. Handy Awards from the Blues Foundation, an Emmy Award®, an Addy Award, two Chicago Music Awards, and numerous humanitarian and achievement awards. Branch has become the ambassador of the Chicago Blues. He and his band, the SOB’s have represented the Blues around the world, making over 70 international tours. In fact, the 2007 Chicago Blues Festival honored the 30th anniversary of Branch and the SOB’s with a 3-hour performance.

Branch is a pioneer of his internationally recognized “Blues in Schools Program,” committed to teaching both young and old about the Blues as the roots of America’s music. He has brought his interdisciplinary program to Europe, South America, Asia, and most recently to Mexico where he taught his two week program in Spanish Mose Rutues Jr., has been the drummer for the SOB’s for over 25 years. He previously played with such legendary greats as Major Lance, Mckinely Mitchell, and Joe Tex. His intense energy and unique rhythmic style is the engine that powers the stylistic diversity of the SOB’s Nick Charles was given his first bass guitar and bass amp by Howlin’ Wolf who then brought the young Charles to Chicago. Early on Charles made his mark as the undeniable bass player extraordinaire. He’s played with Howlin’ Wolf, B.B. King, Tina Turner, Valerie Wellington, and the Rolling Stones, just to name a few.

Keyboard player, Sumito Ariyoshi, aka Ariyo is internationally recognized for his vigorous innovative piano style. He’s shared the stage and toured the world with such legends as Otis Rush, Pinetop Perkins, Detroit Jr. Valerie Wellington, and Sunnyland Slim.

SOB. He plays a mean slide guitar and contributes with his soulful vocals. He previously played with A.C. Reed, Byther Smith, Aaron Burton, Sammy Fender, and Nigel Mack. He’s emerging as a player with the depth and maturity of a seasoned Chicago Blues man.

LARRY CORYELL The Larry Coryell Trio, with Coryell on guitar, Darryl Johns on bass, and John Colianni on piano will perform compositions from a project recorded last June called “Montgomery,” which was a reference about and a tribute to the Montgomery bus boycott of 1955. This boycott signaled the beginning of a strong movement forward in this country’s struggle for civil rights. It was spearheaded by the emergence of Martin Luther King as spiritual leader not only in America, but throughout the world.

Dr. King loved music, he loved jazz, and he fought for justice. ”Montgomery” takes its inspiration from the major personalities in the “movement,” both well-known and not so well-known; whose courageous actions provided the catalyst for a humanity-oriented revolution. Coryell drew from Thelonious Monk and John Coltrane, among others, to create a milieu reminiscent of the best creative moments of the 50s. Coryell says, “the staying power of jazz music is remarkable as it goes forward, evolving in new ways, yet it always keeps its original essence intact.”

The trio first performed this work in New York earlier this year to great success and acclaim, and the responses all through 2011 to this project have been remarkable. The CD is called Montgomery, on Pawtuxent Records.

TITO PUENTE, JR. The comparison is inevitable. How could it be otherwise? Tito Puente Jr. carries his father with him—imprinted on his physical being and locked in his soul. It’s in his looks, his joy, and his music.

Puente Jr. is on a passionate mission. The younger Puente is determined to nurture the musical legacy left by his father. He refuses to

let his father become a distant memory. “He was just too vibrant, too exciting. There was magic in the music my father made. It made people happy all over the world.”

He has found captive audiences who echo his passion. Crowds lured to a venue by the father are returning to see the son—and to once again participate in the high voltage celebration that takes place on stage.

Puente Jr. has become an audience favorite in casinos, performing arts centers, symphony halls, and jazz festivals worldwide, performing more than 300 shows over the past five years.

His 2004 album, In My Father’s Shoes featured the classic Puente titles and was spun into a BET© jazz television special of the same name. He was seen in a tribute to his father’s music on NBC©’s two hour special –The Apollo at 70: A Hot Night in Harlem. He has also appeared on the ABC© soap opera hit, One Life to Live in performance with his big band.

Symphony appearances include Dallas, San Antonio, Colorado, South Bend, and upcoming performances with the Palm Desert Symphony and the National Symphony Orchestra conducted by Marvin Hamlisch.

Puente Jr.’s new CD release, Got Mambo? is a mixture of the old and the new as he takes a musical departure into some powerful new music he can truly call his own. Guest artists Bobby Cruz and Hansel & Raul help make this a coming of age project for Puente Jr. and the album is receiving heavy praise from Tropical and Latin jazz critics alike.

Puente Jr. reveres the magnificent, lasting impact his father had on our musical lives.

“People who don’t know anything about Latin music know my father and people always, always smile when they say my father’s name,” he confides, “That is a very special gift I have been given.”

Puente Jr. lives in South Florida and has two children, Miranda and Antonio.

New Jersey Blues & Jazz Festival

ELIANE ELIAS Pianist/singer/songwriter, Eliane Elias (pronounced eh-lee-AH-neh eh-LEE-ahs) is known for her distinctive and immediately recognizable musical style which blends her Brazilian roots and her sensuous, alluring voice with her impressive instrumental jazz, classical, and compositional skills. Born in Sao Paulo, Brazil, Elias’ musical talents began to show at an early age. She started studying piano at age seven, and at age 12 was transcribing solos from the great jazz masters. By the time she was 15, she was teaching piano and improvisation at one of Brazil’s most prestigious schools of music. Her performing career began in Brazil at age 17, working with Brazilian singer/songwriter Toquinho and the great poet Vinicius de Moraes, who was also Antonio Carlos Jobim’s co-writer/lyricist. In 1981, she headed for New York and in 1982 landed a spot in the acclaimed group, Steps Ahead.

Since the mid-1980s, Eliane has grafted various elements of jazz, pop, soul, and other

styles to her deep Brazilian roots to create a hybrid groove that exists comfortably on any hemisphere. Borrowing from an array of sources and singing in a variety of languages, Elias consistently forges a sound that appeals to listeners of every geographic locale and cultural persuasion.

Her new album, Light My Fire, released on Concord Records, wields this universal sound to explore the various corners of the human heart—from romance and passion to the shared joy of being alive and embracing everyone into the dance of life. Along with four compositions written or co-written by Elias herself, the album also includes covers of familiar works by songwriters as diverse as Jim Morrison and the Doors; pop icon, Stevie Wonder and jazz saxophonist, Paul Desmond.

Elias weaves it all together into a cohesive whole by injecting each of the 12 songs with distinctly Brazilian grooves that alternate effortlessly between the fiery and passionate to the cool and sophisticated.

Tony® Award-winning choreographer Garth Fagan’s dancers communicate with unbridled energy the depth, precision, and grace of Fagan’s work. About the Artists GARTH FAGAN (Founder/Artistic Director) Critics have called Garth Fagan “a true original,” “a genuine leader,” and “one of the great reformers of modern dance.” Fagan is the founder and artistic director of the award-winning and internationally acclaimed Garth Fagan Dance, now celebrating its 40th Anniversary season. A Tony® and Olivier Awardwinner, Fagan continually renews his own distinctive dance vocabulary, which draws on many sources: the sense of weight in modern dance, the torso-centered movement and energy of Afro-Caribbean, the speed and precision of ballet, and the rule-breaking experimentation of the post-moderns. “Originality has always been Fagan’s strong suit, not least in his transformation of recognizable id-

ioms into a dance language that looks not only fresh but even idiosyncratic,” writes Anna Kisselgoff of The New York Times.

For his path-breaking choreography for Walt Disney’s The Lion King, Fagan was awarded the prestigious 1998 Tony® Award for Best Choreography. Fagan’s distinguished work in the theatre also includes the first fully staged production of the Duke Ellington street opera, Queenie Pie, at the Kennedy Center in 1986 and the opening production of Joseph Papp’s New York Shakespeare Festival’s Shakespeare Marathon: A Midsummer Night’s Dream (1988), set in Brazil and directed by A.J. Antoon.

Fagan has also produced commissions for a number of leading companies, including his first work en pointe, Footprints Dressed in Red, for the Dance Theatre of Harlem; a solo for Judith Jamison, Scene Seen, for the debut of the Jamison Project; Jukebox for Alvin for the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater; Never No Lament for the Jose Limon Company; and Ellington Elation, part of a triad of pieces commissioned by the New York City Ballet in honor of Duke Ellington’s centenary and New York City Ballet’s 50th anniversary.

Fagan began his career when he toured Latin America with Ivy Baxter and her national dance company from Jamaica. Baxter and two other famed dance teachers from the Caribbean, Pearl Primus and Lavinia Williams, were major influences on Fagan. In New York City, Fagan studied with Martha Graham, Jose Limon, Mary Hinkson, and Alvin Ailey, who were all central to his development. NORWOOD PENNEWELL (Rehearsal Director/Assistant to Fagan), who joined GFD in 1978, is the quintessential Garth Fagan dancer and is Fagan’s assistant and muse. Pennewell is a recipient of a 1988 New York Performance “Bessie” Award and has had several major works created for him, including Passion Distanced, Time After Before Place, and Moth Dreams, among others. Pennewell’s dancing has been seen on Great Performances, The Tonight Show, and in Duke Ellington’s Queenie Pie. In 1994, he was invited to perform in the 66th Annual Academy Awards® broadcast. Pennewell teaches both company and master classes for GFD. He recently assisted Fagan during his work on Broadway’s The Lion King and the NYC Ballet 50th anniversary Ellington project.

STEVE HUMPHREY (dancer) is an original member of GFD. Over the past 40 years, Fagan, Humphrey’s only teacher, has created major roles for him, including Oatka Trail, which won Humphrey one of the first New York Performance “Bessie” Awards in 1984.

Humphrey, a native of Ann Arbor, has been featured on Great Performances and in Duke Ellington’s Queenie Pie at the Kennedy Center.

NICOLETTE DEPASS (dancer) of Jamaica, West Indies, joined the company in 1994. She was raised in Queens, New York and graduated cum laude from SUNY Brockport with a Bachelor of Science degree in Dance and Communications. A former scholarship student of the Garth Fagan Dance School, she now teaches Fagan Technique at the school. Depass has been featured in Fagan’s Edge/Joy, Senku, and Life: Dark/Light.

KHAMA KGARI (dancer) born in Barbados, WI, was previously a dancer with L’acadco. A Clive Thompson Scholarship recipient and graduate of Edna Manely College of the Visual and Performing Arts, Khama has performed as an apprentice with The National Dance Theatre Company of Jamaica and was a member of the Jamaican Ashe Caribbean Performing Arts Ensemble. He began his journey with GFD September 2006.

LINDSAY RENEA (dancer) was born in Youngstown, OH, where she began her dance training. This subsequently led her to pursue her dream at Howard University as a dance major. Under the guidance of Dr. Sherill Berryman-Johnson, she was urged to try-out for GFD. She began dancing with GFD May 2008 after graduating from college.

VITOLIO JEUNE (dancer) began his dance training at age 17 in his native Haiti at Artcho Danse under the guidance of Jeanguy Saintus.

He was a principal dancer with the Ayikodans Dance Company, touring nationally and internationally for five years, as well as a guest artist with La Companie Trilogie. Jeune is a graduate of the New World School of the Arts and recently finished as a top 14 contestant in FOX’s televised So You Think You Can Dance, season five. He joined GFD August 2009.

JOHN MERCADO (dancer) began his dance training in Humacao, Puerto Rico, at age 15. He has performed professionally, nationally, and internationally, with Dramadanza Puerto Rico, Drumcliffe Dance Company, and Borinquen Dance Theatre. CHARITY BUCKNER (Apprentice) was born in Miami, FL where she began her dance training. She was a Dean’s Award recipient at New World School of the Arts High School and a Merit Award winner for National Foundation of the Arts and in 2007. As a Howard University dance major, Buckner trained as a scholarship student at Dallas Black Dance Theater, Paul Taylor Winter Intensive, and Jacob’s Pillow Contemporary Traditions Program. After graduating Magna Cum Laude in 2008, she performed with Philadelphia Dance Company’s Apprentice Company (D/2). Buckner joined GFD May 2011.

SADE BULLY (Apprentice), born of Dominica, W.I. received most of her dance training in Jamaica W.I. from Tony Wilson at his School of Modern Dance and with the company Dance Theater of Jamaica, who she performed with for 10 years. She completed a degree in medical sciences and surgery from the University of the West Indies, and subsequently continued pursuing a dance career at the Ailey School in New York City. As a student there she was invited to perform with the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater in the 2011 City Center Season.

CYNTHIA ANDRÉSEN (Costume Designer/Wardrobe Manager) is a graduate from Nazareth College of Rochester, New York earning her Masters of Arts in Liberal Studies. In working towards her Capstone, she wrote a one act play titled Red Velvet along with choreographing and designing the set and costumes based on Human Rights. By Aaron Grad Symphony No. 1 in G Minor, Op. 13 (Winter Daydreams) [1866, revised 1874] PYOTR IL’YICH TCHAIKOVSKY Born May 7, 1840 in Kamsko-Votkinsk, Russia; Died November 6, 1893 in St. Petersburg Tchaikovsky made remarkable progress from his first formal music lessons in 1861 to his First Symphony five years later. He studied from 1862 to 1865 at the newly formed St. Petersburg Conservatory, where his principal teacher was Anton Rubinstein. After Tchaikovsky graduated, Rubinstein’s brother Nikolai recruited the young composer to teach at another fledgling academy, the Moscow Conservatory.

Tchaikovsky worked alongside Nikolai Rubinstein, roomed in his house, and eventually dedicated the First Symphony to him.

Tchaikovsky had a brutal time composing that symphony, which he began in March of 1866. Writing that spring to his younger brother Anatolli, he lamented, “My nerves are extremely fraught again, for the following reasons: 1) my lack of success in composing the symphony; 2) Rubinstein and Tarnovskii ... spend all day trying to torment me... 3) being unable to shake off the thought that I might soon die without even managing to complete the symphony.” Another brother, Modest, painted an even gloomier picture in a later biography: “No other work cost him such effort and suffering. … Despite painstaking and arduous work, its composition was fraught with difficulty, and while pressing ahead with the symphony, Pyotr Il’yich’s nerves

became more and more frayed. As a result of this exceptionally hard work he began to suffer from insomnia, and the sleepless nights paralyzed his creative energies. At the end of July all this erupted into a terrible nervous attack, the like of which he never experienced again during his lifetime. … The most distressing symptoms of this illness were dreadful hallucinations, which were so frightening that they resulted in a feeling of complete numbness in all his extremities.”

Tchaikovsky showed his hard-fought new work to his former teachers Rubinstein and Zaremba in St. Petersburg with the hopes of securing a premiere performance there. They rejected the symphony, only deeming the middle movements fit for performance, and Tchaikovsky returned to Moscow to execute revisions. It was the other Rubinstein brother, Nikolai, who championed the work and conducted the first full performance in Moscow in 1868. Tchaikovsky retouched the symphony again in 1874, substituting an entirely new second subject in the first movement and making smaller changes in the other movements.

Tchaikovsky subtitled the First Symphony Winter Daydreams. He did not specify a program for the work, but he did add evocative headings for the first two movements: Dreams of a Winter Journey and Land of Gloom, Land of Mist. The symphony opens with a frosty melody over a tremulous pad, framing straight off the central problem of the symphony for Tchaikovsky: how could he reconcile his effusive gift for melody with the taut structural de-

mands of symphonic form? His solution here, repeated in most of his symphonies, was to lean on his vivid scene-painting ability, using repetition and changes in orchestration to reinforce his points rather than continual evolution and development of the material.

The second movement establishes the contours of the Land of Gloom, Land of Mist with the dark hues of muted strings, countered by a more hopeful oboe melody. The Scherzo, adapted from an earlier piano sonata, is an elfin specimen in C minor that owes a debt to the scherzos of Mendelssohn. The contrasting middle section, though, is pure Tchaikovsky; a sweet waltz that descends like a dream within a dream.

The finale reconciles the moody reverie of the preceding movements by cleverly juxtaposing multiple strains. The Andante lugubre introduction resembles the sparse, rhapsodic entrance of the symphony, while a theme derived from a Russian folksong is more grounded. The music modulates to the major key and accelerates to an Allegro maestoso tempo, reworking the folk theme and passing it through several fugal treatments. The minor-key music of the slow introduction makes an unexpected return, and a sunny climax in G major ultimately burns away the heavy chill of winter.

Symphony No. 6 in B Minor, Op. 74 (Pathétique) [1893] PYOTR IL’YICH TCHAIKOVSKY Tchaikovsky died nine days after he conducted the premiere of his Sixth Symphony. He had time to express in a letter to his friend and publisher Petr Jurgensen that the symphony “produced some bewilderment” among the audience, and he added the instructive subtitle Pathétique, suggested by his brother Modest.

The second performance, staged weeks later at a memorial service, garnered a very different response. In the wake of the composer’s abrupt and mysterious death at the age of 53, listeners began to project onto the music a tragic personal narrative rife with suicidal overtones, associations that linger to this day.

It is tempting to turn to the music for answers, because Tchaikovsky’s death left so many open questions. Did he really die of cholera after drinking unboiled water, as his brother

claimed? Or did he commit suicide? One theory, articulated in 1980 by the scholar Aleksandra Orlova, posits that an “honor court” uncovered Tchaikovsky’s homosexual advances toward a young aristocrat and condemned the composer to commit suicide rather than dragging others into a shameful public scandal.

Is it possible that the symphony holds some clue to his demise? Tchaikovsky did have a program in mind for the Sixth Symphony, but he never revealed it. Writing in February 1893 to his nephew (and the work’s dedicatee) Vladimir Davydov, Tchaikovsky reported that he “had the idea for another symphony, this time with a program, but with a program that will be an enigma to all.” He considered calling the work “Program Symphony,” but instead presented it at the debut simply as Symphony No. 6. The addition of the French word pathétique—the same descriptor Beethoven applied to his Eighth Piano Sonata—suggests music of deep feeling and pathos, without the stinging connotations of the English word “pathetic.”

ored to write a “grand symphony,” nearly completing a symphony in E-flat before scrapping it that December and redirecting some material to the Third Piano Concerto. He started fresh in February with what became the Sixth Symphony. Again addressing his nephew, Tchaikovsky explained that “the form of this symphony will have much that is new, and by the way, the finale will not be a noisy allegro, but on the contrary, a long drawn-out adagio.”

This structural plan is the key to the Sixth Symphony, more than any hidden narrative or implied autobiography.

The symphony’s first movement opens ominously, with a slow introduction featuring bassoon and low strings. The strings and then the winds retread this rising and falling motive at the start of the agitated Allegro non troppo section. The second theme, in contrast, is an island of repose, flipping the initial motive’s contours to first fall and then rise before reaching equilibrium.

The Allegro con grazia second movement features the irregular time signature of 5/4 (five quarter-notes per measure). This “limping waltz” flows with surprising smoothness and grace, considering the irregular meter. The third movement is even more kinetic, spinning through a triplet introduction to a jolly march tune that starts in the clarinets. Had the bombastic close of this movement been the end of the work, it would have grouped this symphony with Tchaikovsky’s Fourth and Fifth, which both progressed from fateful minor keys to valedictory major keys along the lines of Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony.

The Sixth Symphony instead charts an original path, reaching its emotional crest in a slow and mournful finale. The first poignant chords return to the brooding mood established in the first movement’s introduction; a return to the texture of bassoon and strings emphasizes the link. The melody attempts a long climb into a more optimistic resolution in D major, only to snap back into B minor. The low brass section intones a mournful knell, and one last gasp of the descending melody follows, fading to a whisper from the cellos and basses.

About the Orchestra The Orchestra of the Mariinsky Theatre enjoys a long and distinguished history as one of the oldest musical institutions in Russia.

Founded in the 18th century during the reign of Peter the Great and housed in St. Petersburg’s famed Mariinsky Theatre since 1860, the orchestra entered its “golden age” in the second half of the 19th century under the musical direction of Eduard Napravnik, whose leadership for more than a half century (1863-1916) secured its reputation as one of the finest in Europe.

The leadership of Gergiev has enabled the Theatre to forge important relationships for the Mariinsky Ballet and Opera to appear in the world’s greatest opera houses and theaters, among them the Metropolitan Opera, the Kennedy Center, the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden, the San Francisco Opera, the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris, the Salzburg Festival, and La Scala in Milan.

The success of the orchestra’s frequent tours has created the reputation of what one journalist referred to as “the world’s first global orchestra.” Since its U.S. debut in 1992 the orchestra has made 15 tours of North America, including a 2006 celebration of the complete Shostakovich symphonies, a Cycle of Stage Works of Prokofiev in 2008, major works of Hector Berlioz in February/March 2010, and a Centennial Mahler Cycle in Carnegie Hall in October 2010. In October 2011, the Mariinsky Orchestra will open Carnegie Hall’s 120th season and will present a cycle of Tchaikovsky Symphonies on both the east and west coast and in Canada.

About the Artist Wanda Sykes has been called “one of the funniest stand-up comics” by her peers and ranks among Entertainment Weekly’s 25 Funniest People in America. Her smart-witted stand up has sent her career in many different areas.

Sykes was previously seen on several television shows these past two years, including her own late night talk show on FOX, The Wanda Sykes Show; her second HBO® stand up special I’ma Be Me; and in the CBS comedy The New Adventures of Old Christine. Her first HBO® comedy special WANDA SYKES: SICK & TIRED debuted in October 2006 and was nominated for a 2007 Primetime Emmy® for Outstanding Variety, Music or Comedy Special.

Sykes was seen in the feature films Evan Almighty, the sequel to Bruce Almighty, in which she co-starred with Steve Carell; the feature film Monster-In-Law starring opposite Jennifer Lopez and Jane Fonda; and was heard

in the animated feature Over The Hedge for Dreamworks as well as The Barnyard for Paramount Pictures. Sykes starred and produced the Comedy Central show Wanda Does It, where she tried various non-showbiz jobs.

Her first book titled Yeah, I Said It, published

by Simon and Schuster, hit bookstores in September 2004. Yeah, I Said It is a hilarious collection of essays touching on life, family, and current events.

In the fall of 2003 she was seen on Fox’s Wanda at Large which she wrote, produced, and starred. She also has a one hour Comedy Central special called Wanda Sykes: Tongue Untied. In addition, she can be seen on HBO®‘s Curb Your Enthusiasm or heard on Comedy Central’s Crank Yankers as the voice of Gladys Murphy.

Sykes was born in Portsmouth, Virginia and raised in Maryland. She graduated with a Bachelor of Science from Hampton University.

Her stand-up career began at a Coors Light Super Talent Showcase in Washington, DC where she performed for the first time in front of a live audience.

She spent five years as part of the HBO®‘s critically acclaimed Chris Rock Show. As a performer and writer on the show, she was nominated for three Primetime Emmy’s® and in 1999 won the Emmy® for Outstanding Writing for a Variety, Music or Comedy Special. In 2001, she won the American Comedy Award for Outstanding Female Stand Up Comic. She won three more Emmy’s®, in 2002, 2004, and 2005, for her work on Inside the NFL for Outstanding Studio Show.

In 2003, Sykes earned a Comedy Central Commie® Award for Funniest TV Actress.

Other writing credits include: the MTV 1999 Music Video Awards®, the MTV Movie Awards® the 74th Annual Academy Awards®, The Keenen Ivory Wayans Show, and Wanda at Large.

About the Artist Lewis Black is one of the most prolific and popular performers working today. He executes a brilliant trifecta as stand-up comedian, actor, and author. Receiving critical acclaim, he performs over 200 nights a year to sell out audiences throughout Europe, New Zealand, Canada, and the U.S. He is one of few performers to sell out multiple, renowned theaters including Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, Brooks Atkinson Theatre, New York City Center, and the MGM© Grand in Las Vegas. In August 2007, he was the first stand-up comedian to ever perform in concert at the Walt Disney© Concert Hall in Los Angeles.

Black’s live performances provide a cathartic release of anger and disillusionment for his audience. Black yells so they don’t have to. A passionate performer who is more pissed off optimist than mean-spirited curmudgeon, Black is the rare comic who can cause an audience to laugh themselves into incontinence while making compelling points about the absurdity of our world.

Black was born in Washington D.C. and raised in Silver Spring, MD. Colicky as a baby, it seems he was destined to be angry and easily irritated. His mother, a teacher, and his father, a mechanical engineer, instilled in both Black and his younger brother Ron the importance of education and the necessity to question authority; lessons which have influenced Black throughout his private and professional life. When Black was 12, his father took him to his first play and he quickly fell in love with the theatre. This ultimately led Black to pursue a career in drama. Degrees followed from the University of North Carolina and Yale Drama School, with a stint in Colorado owning a theater with a group of friends in the interim. During his tenure at UNC, Black first ventured into stand-up, performing at Cat’s Cradle in Chapel Hill. Stand-up continued to be a steady presence as he pursued his career in theatre.

Black eventually settled in New York City and became the playwright-in-residence at the West Bank Café’s Downstairs Theatre Bar.

Black oversaw the development of more than 1,000 plays, including works by West Wing creator Aaron Sorkin; American Beauty writer, Alan Ball; as well as his own original works. In addition to overseeing the works on stage, Black emceed every show. As the West Bank grew, so did Black’ skill as a stand-up and eventually, the fulfillment of performing stand-up outweighed that of working in the theater. Having found his public voice, Black left the West Bank in the late 80’s to pursue stand-up full time.

In 1996, his friend Lizz Winstead tapped him to create a weekly segment for a show she was producing on Comedy Central called The Daily Show. The segment, a three minute rant about whatever was bothering him at the moment, evolved into Back in Black. It became one of the most popular and longest running segments on the show as well as creating a long and successful relationship with the network. Since then, Black has taped four specials for the Comedy Central Presents series, co-created Last Laugh with Black Black, and Black Black’s Root of All Evil, and continues to perform Back in Black on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart. His popular appearances on Comedy Central helped to win him Best Male Stand-Up at the American Comedy Awards in 2001.

Increased exposure from The Daily Show eventually generated a record deal with Stand Up! Records. His first CD, The White Album, was released in 2000 to much critical acclaim.

Black followed with eight more, six under the Comedy Central Records label. He has been graced with four Grammy® nominations and two wins for his work.

In the midst of a rigorous touring schedule, regular TV appearances, and movie roles, Black has written three best-selling books, Nothing’s Sacred (Simon and Schuster, 2005), Me of Little Faith (Riverhead Books, 2008), and I’m Dreaming of a Black Christmas (Riverhead Books, 2010). All garnered critical praise as well commercial success and spent numerous weeks on the New York Times best seller list.

Who’s Who MICKEY JOSEPH (Appearing as Joey Bishop) attended his first acting class in 1981 at Canada College in Redwood City California.

After six semesters of intense scene work under the direction of Robert Curtis, Joseph was accepted at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in Pasadena California in 1983. He supported himself through acting school by delivering balloons dressed in a gorilla suit, performing as a street mime on Hollywood Blvd., and waiting tables in an Italian restaurant. He started writing his comedy act in 1984 and quickly became a favorite at local showcases. Joseph’s career as a comedian has flourished in the San Francisco Bay Area for 25 years. He has worked the hottest comedy clubs on the West Coast and Las Vegas having performed with Ellen DeGeneres, Drew Carey, Craig Ferguson, George Lopez, Bill Engvall, and Robin Williams. His well tailored, hysterically funny comedy act is what attracted The Rat Pack is Back! Producer, Dick Feeney. Joseph has been appearing as Joey Bishop in this show since 2005 at the Plaza in Las Vegas and on tour. He was part of the show’s engagement at the Gem Theater in 2008, which was nominated for Detroit’s Oscar Wilde Award for Best Musical. He has numerous television and radio appearances and can be seen in several inde-

pendent films. Joseph also portrays “the old Stagehand,” in this production.

DREW ANTHONY (Appearing as Dean Martin) Since he received his B.F.A. from the Mannes College of Music Jazz Division in New York City, Anthony has established himself as one of the finest jazz singers in the area. He has performed on many stages ranging from the Shubert Theater to the Intermezzo Night Club in the Foxwoods Resort & Casino. Anthony has recorded three CDs live, the first of which, entitled You Don’t Know Me, includes blues pianist Junior Mance on the title song. Anthony’s vocal quality and sense of rhythm were a natural fit with many big bands, and after much success he created The Drew Anthony Orchestra. The Drew Anthony Orchestra made its debut in the concert entitled Come Fly with Me. He has studied jazz voice with internationally known jazz recording artists Sheila Jordan, Jackie Paris, and classically with Munich’s Bavarian State Opera tenor, John Kuhn.

KENNY JONES (Appearing as Sammy Davis, Jr.) Born and raised in Atchison, KS, Jones’s love of music began with his first stage appearance at the age of 12 with a local group called Jive Five. He later learned how to play the piano, bass guitar, and drums and was a member of The Jesus Children and then the Genetta Bradley Singers. In Denver, CO, he

continued his gospel career at The House of Joy where he cut his first gospel album and released his first single called Peanut Butter and Jelly. In 1989 and 1990 Jones was voted The Best Male Vocalist of the Year by the Gospel Music Workshop of Denver. Jones served as the front man for bands such as Soul Review, Groove City as well as Denver’s hottest R&B band, 1UP, which had the honor of performing at the opening of The Hard Rock Café in Shanghai, China. Since 2004, Jones has and continues to appear in showrooms, theaters as well as corporate and private engagements paying tribute to the ultimate entertainer showmanship: Sammy Davis, Jr. in The Rat Pack is Back!

BRIAN DUPREY (Appearing as Frank Sinatra) You probably saw Brian Duprey on FOX© TV’s, Performing As. Duprey won the first-place prize of $20,000 portraying his idol, Frank Sinatra. Talent judge Damon Elliott (music producer of Mya, Beyonce, and Jessica Simpson) was blown away the first time he saw Duprey perform; it was like he was watching Young Blue Eyes. Television viewers agreed and

thousands flocked to FOX©’s website to compliment his uncanny likeness to Sinatra’s own singing voice. Singing since the age of six and becoming captivated with Sinatra’s voice by age 13, Duprey has always felt connected to the golden era of music. From his singing days in high school variety shows to doing stand-up comedy, it took Duprey until he was an undergraduate at Fairfield University to really discover his passion for jazz and swing music.

After 20 years, both shows continue to play to enthusiastic audiences. In 1991, Feeney opened Viva Las Vegas at the Sands Hotel & Casino. Now in its 19th year playing at the Plaza Hotel & Casino in downtown Las Vegas, Viva Las Vegas remains the longest running and most successful afternoon show in Las Vegas history. He is Chairman of the Board of Petrie Development Corporation, formed in 1976, and General Manager of Asset Development Services, LLC, a real estate investment company located in Las Vegas, Nevada. Petrie’s experience in commercial real estate includes development for Wal-Mart, Sam’s Club, K-mart, and other retail users, development of apartment complexes, and redevelopment of a university campus to offices and housing. Hours: Mon-Tue, Thu-Sat, 10am-6pm; Wed 11am-7pm. Ticket Office walk-up hours are extended a half hour past curtain time on days and evenings when there is a performance.

On Sundays when there is a performance, the Ticket Office is open at least 1 hour prior to curtain unless otherwise noted. Phone lines close half hour prior to curtain.

SENIOR RUSH TICKETS: Senior citizens (65 years or older) may purchase half-price tickets, subject to availability, on the day of the performance. Rush tickets can be purchased only at the Ticket Office, and purchaser must present proof of senior status. Limit one halfprice ticket per senior ID. GROUP SALES discounts are available for groups of 12 or more. Contact State Theatre Group Sales, at 732-247-7200, ext. 517 for more information.

CELLPHONES/CAMERAS And the use os such equipment are prohibited in the theater chamber at all times. Guests who do not adhere are subject to ejection without a refund offered.

DOCTORS OR PARENTS may leave their seat locations with an attendant at the lower-lobby refreshment bar. Babysitters or paging services should be advised to call the theater at 732-247-7200, option 8 in the event of an emergency.

STATE THEATRE RENTAL: Information regarding the rental of the State Theatre can be obtained by contacting Dave Hartkern, Director of Operations, at 732-247-7200, ext. 518.

FIRE NOTICE: The red exit sign nearest to your seat indicates the shortest routes to the street.

In the event of fire or other emergency, please do not run—walk to that exit.

EDUCATORS interested in the State Theatre’s programs for teachers and students may obtain more information by calling the State Theatre Education Department at 732-246-SHOW (7469), ext. 545.

SMOKING is strictly prohibited in all areas of the theater.

State Theatre Accessibility Services The orchestra level is wheelchair accessible. Patrons can make arrangements for accessible seating through the Ticket Office when purchasing tickets.

The theater is equipped with an assistive listening system that improves sound clarity and amplification. The lightweight, wireless headsets may be borrowed free of charge at the lower-lobby bar.

State Theatre’s Great American Songbook On May 21, State Theatre's Great American Songbook featuring Marvin Hamlisch, the State Theatre Benefit Gala 2011, honored Johnson & Johnson Chairman and CEO Mr. William C. Weldon, and raised $550,000 for the nonprofit performing arts center. Proceeds from the gala event support the State Theatre’s acclaimed artistic and educational programs. Hamlisch, Pulitzer-Prize winning composer of A Chorus Line, created the original and unique gala production in celebration of the 90th anniversary of the State Theatre.
