Let’s face it, dining halls aren’t always the most desirable places to eat. They’re crowded, sometimes messy and the food can be sub-par.

During my freshman year I didn’t really have the best experience living in East Neighborhood, where the dining halls weren’t the greatest to say the least. Hubbard Hall’s dining food always seemed like I was eating leftovers from the day before.

But now that I live off campus, I had to decide whether I wanted an off-campus meal plan or not.

Packing my lunch seemed so

elementary school. I didn’t really want to whip out my old SpongeBob lunch box. In addition, my mother wasn’t here to pack my lunch and leave sappy notes in it — diminishing the appeal even more.

Not only would no one be making my lunches, but I would have to make my dinner myself too.

I’m no Bobby Flay in the kitchen, so spending over a half hour in the kitchen isn’t exactly a pleasurable or easy experience for me.

Soon into my sophomore year, cooking got really old really fast.

Trust me, Easy Mac does not taste good after eating it every day.

I finally caved and purchased the DineOn 175 off-campus meal plan, which would provide me with 175 meals that carry over until I graduate. With this meal plan, it is considerably cheaper at $6.75 per meal, rather than

paying more than nine dollars for each individual swipe at the dining hall.

After purchasing the meal plan I got so excited to eat lunch on campus the next day. All I could think about that night was eating in Shaw Hall and drowning in freshly-baked Shaw Hall cookies and all the other goodies Shaw Hall has to offer.

Dining hall food never tasted so good. Although I already had a mad love affair with Shaw Hall’s blackened chicken, it tasted 10 times better because I didn’t have to make it for myself.

I fell in love with dining on campus. I didn’t have to make the food. I didn’t have to go all the way back to my apartment to catch a bite of food.

Going to the dining hall used to seem like a chore. Now that I go there less often, going to the dining hall seems like a treat.

The different types of bread, drinks, fruits, deserts, cereals, lettuce toppings and other condiments — something I took for granted when all of that was unlimited.

Now with my extra appreciation of dining halls, every time I eat on campus I want to make the most of it. Rather than just get a small meal and not think anything of it, I make sure my plate is full — and maybe a second plate, too.

At the end of the day, I am so glad I purchased a meal plan. If you’re living off campus, make the best out of each meal. Look at the menus beforehand, eat like a hound and don’t feel guilty taking some food home for later — but you didn’t hear that from me.

A little over a week ago, as I was walking through Brody Hall to get dinner, I was asked by a girl who was member of Spartans Fighting Cancer if I’d sign a petition to help make MSU smoke free, to which I gave a definitive “no.”

I didn’t refuse because I was hungry and in a hurry, or because I’m a cigarette smoker myself and certainly not because I’m pro-cancer. I said no because it’s an infringement on the civil liberties of those individuals who do choose to smoke.

MSU already has a smokefree policy that doesn’t allow smok i ng i n side or w it hin 25 feet of its buildings.

That seems pretty reasonable to me, but to go any further than that is completely unnecessary.

I don’t smoke cigarettes, nor do I ever plan to. I choose not to smoke because I know it’s an addictive, unhealthy habit that can yes, potentially cause cancer. I don’t smoke, but not because somebody told me I can’t.

Smok i ng i s a p er sona l choice, not something you should lawfully mandate people from doing. The same way eating a greasy cheeseburger is a choice, or the way binge drinking on a football Saturday is a choice.

People don’t do these things because they’re healthy for you. They do them because they want to and choose to.

It’s 2014, nobody is denying that smoking cigarettes is bad for you.

In a recent State News article on the smoking ban petition writers, the president of Spartans Fighting Cancer Sarah Hoffman was quoted saying, “About half of the other Big Ten schools are smokefree. Isn’t that reason enough for us to be?”

Well, quite frankly, no. It’s not. There is actually no reasoning or explanation behind that rationale whatsoever.

Just because other schools have done it, doesn’t mean we should.

Maybe we should try to lead

and stand out from the rest of the Big Ten schools by trying to preserve some basic rights for our faculty and students.

If the writers of this smoking ban petition are really this worried about everyone’s health, they should solely be focusing on educating people on the dangers of smoking, rather than trying to create a policy that is forcefully telling people what they can and can’t do.

Parking on this campus is ridiculous enough as it is.

The last thing I want to see are parking services handing out tickets to poor college students because somebody decided they wanted to light up a smoke between classes.

I’d like to think that college is a time of independence, personal responsibility and freedom. Do we really need our hands held by the university to not make a choice as simple as smoking a cigarette? What kind of message is that sending to us as students? Definitely not one that’s preparing us for life post-graduation.

College can also be of great stress for many students.

Trying to keep up with the absurd expectations of our fast paced world can be extremely demanding for students trying to balance work, classes and social life, on top of trying to pay for rent and rising tuition rates. Everybody has different ways of dealing with stress and for some students and faculty, smoking is one of them.

I understand the argument behind being around second hand smoke being a possible health hazard to those who aren’t smoking, but the 25 foot rule should take care of that issue so long as it’s enforced.

And if it’s not being enforced, then maybe the university should create a policy that has designated areas for smoking, rather than places where people can’t smoke.

Bottom line is that smoking is legal and even if it weren’t people would probably still do it around campus anyway — just as minors still consume alcohol and people still smoke marijuana, despite the legal restrictions.

Next time you feel bothered or disgusted by somebody who is smoking on campus, I have some words of advice for you, “move over there.”

For MSU police, the days before Thanksgiving break were hectic.

On Nov. 24, a vague shooting threat made to MSU forced a secure in place advisory on campus and prompted a lockdown for East Lansing Public Schools. An MSU alert was not sent out, 4

although the threat said “I’m gonna (gun emoji) the school at 12:15 p.m. today,” according to court records.

MSU Police Capt. Penny Fischer said the entire ordeal lasted around 30 minutes from the time MSU received the threat and the time the suspect, later identified as finance freshman Matthew Michael Mullen, 19, was apprehended.

Mullen was arrested on Nov. 22 in East Akers Hall after posting the threat on social media app Yik Yak. Mullen was later arraigned in East Lansing’s 54B District Court, and is set to

On Sept. 7, a student was stabbed and an alert was sent out asking students to avoid the area if possible. There was a 34 minute gap between the initial alert and the follow-up.

Last Tuesday, after operating in the aftermath of a shooter threat, MSU police activated the alerts system once more because of a bomb threat made to campus. Fischer said the investigation is still ongoing and police do not have a suspect.

The bomb threat was determined null after about 20 minutes, Fischer said. Police were alerted to the threat via sources who saw a threat on social media.

What made the quick response times possible, she added, was the high level of community engagement and communication with the police department.

“Somebody said ‘it seems like the time that it took you was the same time it takes on TV,’ and it almost never happens that way,” Fischer said.

“If you ping people on every little thing, while bomb scares are pretty important, what’s the threshold of (importance) you have to cross?” Donohue said, referring to the threshold of importance or emergency an incident has to have to warrant an alert.

Biomedical laboratory science junior Amanda Lisabeth said the alerts reach a good number of people, but many of them don’t need to be sent out.

“I think they’re effective. I signed up for them my freshman year and have gotten them ever since,” Lisabeth said.

“Although there are some I don’t think they need to send out alerts for, like what happened at Beaumont Tower,” referring to a criminal sexual assault that occurred at Beaumont Tower in October.

Some students have complained that they don’t need emails, text messages and phone messages that all contain the same warning. Others, like human resource management senior Emily Gussert, feel alerts should be constant, saying students and faculty should be alerted no matter the situation, saying, “MSU might be liable if they don’t.”

A student whose post on Yik Yak sent several East Lansing schools into lockdown in late November is now being charged as terrorism in East Lansing’s 54-B District Court.

Finance freshman Matthew Mullen appeared Tuesday morning for a pre-trial conference.

Although a preliminary examination

trial was set for this Friday regarding Mullen’s charges of terrorism, both parties have agreed to push the dates back until January 2015 in order to prepare information.

Mullen’s bond was modified to allow him to leave the state over winter break as long as he resided with his parents. The prosecution is planning to talk to student witnesses over the break as well.

When asked if he would be returning to MSU next semester, Mullen said it is “still up in the air.”

Mullen was arrested Nov. 22 in East Akers Hall after posting an anonymous threat on social media app Yik Yak that read “I’m gonna (gun emoji) the school at 12:15 p.m. today,” court records indicate.

The threat was posted at about 10:35 a.m. and police determined Mullen’s location within two hours. Multiple schools in the East Lansing area went into lockdown after the threat was reported to police.

Mullen’s next court appearance is scheduled for a probable cause pre-examination on Jan. 9.

Instead of chugging Red Bulls or munching on food loaded with sodium, eating nutritious snacks during finals week can boost students’ health and exam performance.

Nutritionist at Olin Health Center Anne Buffington said students can improve their focus and concentration during finals week by eating nourishing foods.

“Eat within an hour of waking up,” Buffington said. “Aim to have a balanced meal (including three to four food groups) every four hours during the day.”

Cell and molecular biology doctoral student Gizem Kurt said caffeine is her go-to energy source when studying late at night.

“I eat a bit of chocolates and coffee,” Kurt said.

“I know chocolate gives a boost of energy but

it takes more energy, I know. But if I need the boost, I eat it.”

Without much time to prepare healthy foods, Kurt said she is lead to eat less nutritious snacks.

Buffington suggests taking time to prepare for healthy snacking.

“Plan ahead and stock up on portable snacks that are easy to grab and eat on the go,” Buffington said.

Food such as fruit, granola, protein bars or crackers and peanut butter are good choices, she said.

A healthy balance of carbohydrates and protein are the best for energy drinks, Buffington said.

She also recommends drinking eight ounces of water every few hours to stay hydrated.

“Energy drinks that are high in caffeine and sugar will make you less sleepy,” Buffington said.

Commencement speakers for December graduation at MSU have been chosen, and a wellknown Michigan filmmaker headlines this year’s group of orators.

Michael Moore will be speaking at the 2 p.m. commencement ceremony for members of MSU’s schools of Agriculture and Natural Resources, Communication Arts and Sciences, Engineering, Natural Science and Nursing, and students of the Lyman Briggs College on Dec. 13.

Moore is the outspoken and often controversial creator of documentaries such as “Roger & Me,” “Fahrenheit 9/11” and “Bowling for Columbine.”

MSU alumna and current president of the University of Virginia Teresa Sullivan will speak to students receiving advanced degrees during the Dec. 12 ceremony. And Washington Post columnist George Will is scheduled to speak at the 10 a.m. commencement on Dec. 13.

“We have a dynamic combination of commencement speakers, whose diverse opinions will provide our graduates with interesting perspectives and stimulating conversation,” MSU President Lou Anna K. Simon said in a school press release. “The respectful exchange of differing viewpoints is a marker of the healthy intellectual environment Michigan State models.”

All commencement ceremonies will take place at Breslin Center.

“Fruits — I definitely carry a lot with me,” Puniani said. “I do munch on chips when I’m stressed, but I always eat as much fruits as I can.”

Buffington said there are many simple, nutritional meals that students can prepare: - Cereal or granola with low-fat milk or yogurt and fruit on the side.

- Toast and a vegetable omelet with 100 percent fruit juice.

- A sandwich with deli meat, cheese or hummus with veggie toppings and a side of chocolate milk.

- Vegetable or tomato soup with grilled cheese.

Students who eat well, Buffington said, will sleep better and fuel their brains for better performance during finals week.

It’s unclear whether a forthcoming report from MSU will display similar proportions.

MSU will release a master list of every sexual misconduct occurrence on campus this year, MSU Spokesman Jason Cody said. This will be the first report of its kind released at MSU and will be following a list released by University of Michigan last month.

In U-M’s report, the university disclosed 129 alleged misconduct incidents.

U-M’s report, released last month by the university’s Office for Institutional Equality, showed 68 of the 129 reports were classified as sexual assaults and 34 as sexual harassment. The remaining were categorized as 18 reports of stalking, two of retaliation and 11 as “other.”

These numbers could be an indication of what MSU can expect to see in its report.

Cody said while he didn’t know the exact history behind deciding to release the report, he said because of the recent attention sexual assaults have gotten on college campuses, administration decided to release the reports to inform the community.

“The more awareness, the more education we have, the better,” Cody said.

This report comes as MSU is currently under investigation by the federal government for the alleged mishandling of at least three sexual assault cases. The investigation was brought to light in the spring by The State News, and is ongoing.

Hanging in place where the greek letters for Theta Chi once were are a new set of letters — BZ for “Beta Zeta.”

In the spring semester of 2014, the Beta Zeta chapter of Theta Chi fraternity had its charter revoked by its national board of directors for allegations of hazing.

Despite having the charter revoked, former brothers of the fraternity still live in the house, participate in philanthropy events and hold recruitment activities per their social media accounts.

But the fraternity is no longer recognized by Theta Chi or the Interfraternity Council at MSU and is an unregistered student organization that goes by Beta Zeta.

In order to become a registered student organization and receive benefits of being one, groups interested in forming a registered student organization are required to register yearly with the Department of Student Life.

Student Services Coordinator Fred Watson said Beta Zeta should not be partaking in the activities they are and he will not allow them to become a RSO. “We put the registration on hold until (the greek organization) gets back into grace with their national office,” Watson said.

Under the Department of Student Life, the IFC also has its own constitution and social policy which registered fraternities must follow.

Among those are registering social events, following bringyour-own-beverage guidelines and requiring sober hosts, according to the IFC Social Policy.

event. Since Beta Zeta is not recognized by any governmental body, the brothers aren’t bound by any such rules.

Geoff Sabourin, newly elected president of the IFC and food industry management senior, declined to comment on Beta Zeta’s impact on the IFC’s image or the potential safety concerns an unregistered fraternity could pose.

Michael Mayer, executive director of the Theta Chi international headquarters said as a part of the charter revocation, students are prohibited from representing the fraternity in any way.

“Theta Chi Fraternity does not in anyway support, endorse, or otherwise encourage the operation of an unrecognized local organization operating out of the property,” Mayer said in an email.

Mayer added that any students found to be participating in Beta Zeta would be barred from joining Theta Chi once it regroups on campus.

“Any individual who participated in an unrecognized local organization, such as the one currently operating out of 453 Abbot Road, will be ineligible to join or otherwise affiliate with Theta Chi Fraternity when it returns to campus in 2018,” Mayer said.

The former chapter house, which the brothers of Beta Zeta still live in, is owned by an organization filed as “Alumni Corporation of Beta Zeta,” according to records from the City of East Lansing.

A representative from the Planning, Building and Development department within East Lansing City Hall said there also current violations pending against the house.

Members of Beta Zeta did not reply to multiple requests seeking comment.

The men’s basketball team will take on Notre Dame in the ACC/Big Ten challenge Wednesday, and both players and coaches view the game as an opportunity to bounce back from a perhaps needless loss against No. 11 Kansas on Sunday.

After falling to the No. 11 Jayhawks in the Orlando Classic championship game, the consensus amongst the No. 19 men’s basketball team is that they let one slip away.

MSU’s offense was anemic in the second half against the Jayhawks, converting just eight-of-33 shot attempts. They shot just 37 percent overall for the game.

The Spartans missed several transition layups and dunks that could have kept the game close down the stretch, and foul trouble limited MSU’s bigs throughout the game.

“We lost six, seven late (opportunities),” head coach Tom Izzo said.

“You’re going to shoot 37 percent. I think because of the personnel we had in there, I think both (senior guard Travis Trice) and (junior guard Denzel Valentine) took bad shots. And we took a lot of bad shots. (Kansas) had something to do with it but, we had a lot to do with it ourselves.”

Trice and Valentine each logged more than 30 minutes in the contest, compensating for injuries to sophomore guard Alvin Ellis III and freshman guard Javon Bess.

Ellis practiced Monday for the first time since spraining his ankle in the season opener against Navy and likely will return to the lineup against Notre Dame — certainly good news for Valentine and Trice, who have played heavy minutes in his absence.

“I’m hoping we can use him if we have to, but it’ll be minimal use because we get through this week and now we have a week off. ... But I was surprised how much he did (in practice), to be honest,” Izzo said.

Izzo added that because players are still recovering from health issues— including senior forward Branden Dawson who ran a temperature of 103 degrees last week with the flu and junior guard Bryn Forbes who still has a brace on his hand — he isn’t putting as much importance on Wednesday’s game as he normally would.

MSU has looked impressive at times during its 5-2 start, but with injuries to several key players and disappointing losses against Duke and Kansas, it’s apparent that this is still a team in progress.

“I think what’s important is we play hard and play well, but (Notre Dame is) playing well right now, if you watch them on film,” Izzo said. “It’s going to be a big game down there.

“I think we gotta keep moving forward, but like I said, I don’t know where we’re at because of the situation, and I don’t know, that’s why I don’t know how much (importance) to put on this.”

Column: Historic streaks should have netted senior running back Jeremy Langford All-Big Ten recognition on Monday

On Monday evening, the Big Ten announced its regular season award winners and all league teams, and as many would expect No. 7 MSU had its share of winners and representatives.

Nine Spartans were recognized with All-Big Ten first or second team honors, a large and deserving number of players for one of the best teams in the conference. However, there was one Spartan who was left off that was maybe most deserving of them all — senior running back Jeremy

Langford.

Langford wrapped up the season on Saturday with another 100-yard game — 118 yards and two touchdowns to be exact. Langford’s impressive day came against the nation’s No. 1 rush defense and extended his two historic streaks — nine straight games with at least 100 yards and 16 straight games against Big Ten foes with at least 100 yards.

After compiling consistent performances week after week, Langford finished with 1,360 yards and 19 touchdowns on the ground. That puts him tied for No. 17 in the country in rushing yards and No. 6 in rushing touchdowns.

However, in the eyes of the media and coaches, that wasn’t enough to crack the all conference list.

Langford was beaten out for a spot on either the media or coaches first and second teams by Wisconsin’s Melvin Gordon, Indiana’s Tevin Coleman, Minnesota’s David Cobb and Nebraska’s Ameer Abdullah. Gordon and Coleman made the first

team, and Cobb and Abdullah were selected to the second team.

All four finished with more rushing yards than Langford, but the numbers can be deceiving. Out of the four running backs who made the All-Big Ten list, all but Abdullah had more carries than Langford. And by quite a large margin.

Gordon had 34, Coleman had 21 and Cobb had a whomping 45 more carries than Langford. It should also be noted that Langford was the only back out of the group who had a reliable quarterback, playing a role on the number of carries he was given. If you don’t have someone who can consistently complete passes, you have to run the ball. It’s plain and simple.

I guess Langford should be punished for having a competent quarterback under center.

I know some will think this comes off as whining for the Spartans and what not, but that’s not the case. I’m by no means saying Langford is the best running back in the league. Gordon has

surely proven he is not only the best back in the Big Ten but in the entire country. So give props when it’s needed. But outside of Gordon, none of the running backs in the Big Ten have been more consistent than Langford.

Coleman rushed for more than 2,000 yards this season, but was held to only 71 against Penn State.

Langford ripped off 118 yards against the Nittany Lions.

Abdullah struggled on the big stage, failing to reach more than 100 yards in all three of Nebraska’s losses this season. That includes only 45 yards on 22 carries against MSU. And Cobb benefited from big performances against bad teams such as Middle Tennessee, San Jose State and Purdue, who all ranked no better than 81st in the country for rushing defense.

No running back in the Big Ten has been more consistent than Langford over the past two seasons, and it’s safe to say this was the definition of a Big Ten snub yet again for Mr. Langford.

In a 17-point outburst on Sunday against Miami (OH), senior guard and former walk-on Anna Morrissey turned in the most impressive game of her Spartan career. The fourth-year veteran has filled a need for scoring on the team in recent games and has done so with a hard working and humble approach.

Morrissey set a career-high for scoring with 11 points on Nov. 26 against Oakland, but increased that number to 17 in a 46-point victory this past weekend. She was a spark plug for the Spartans, shooting 4-of-6 from 3-point range.

“This summer, she was in the gym all the time,” senior forward Becca Mills said. “We knew it would pay off, but to see her score 17 points, career high, playing close to 40 minutes a game in the first couple games of the season — neither of us knew she would be excelling this much. ... She’s had it in her all along to be a contributor on the team and play with us and just for her to get out there and be able to prove it and show it and stay out there.

It’s really exciting for her.”

Morrissey, daughter of former MSU and NFL linebacker Jim Morrissey, carries herself with a quiet and unselfish demeanor. As a point guard and floor general, she wants to take on a more traditional role.

“Tori (Jankoska) and Aerial (Powers) are great players,” Morrissey said. “They’re our top scorers, so definitely setting them up for good opportunities is my goal.”

Although she is now a starter and an integral part of the team, the mindset of a walk-on hasn’t worn off for Morrissey. She attributes her confidence boost to the work her teammates have done for her, making her job easier, and has also made it clear that she wants “to do anything to

help the team out.”

Head coach Suzy Merchant noted that Morrissey has gone through her career with no complaints, working hard to make an impact in any way.

“The one thing you really appreciate as a coach is people who genuinely appreciate and are grateful for their opportunity just to be a Spartan,” Merchant said. “(Morrissey) came in with the same attitude everyday. She’s never had a distraction.

She’s never been a problem. She’s always been a positive part of our team.”

A spot in the starting five is not only a testament to Morrissey’s hard work, but also a reminder to some of the more highly recruited players in the MSU locker room to keep improving, Merchant said.

“I always say it’s never the opportunity, it’s what you do when you get the opportunity — and she’s one of those kids,” Merchant said. “To watch Anna for three years be a practice player and go back on (sic) forth being on our scout team, to building in a little bit with us, to now running the team, it’s sort of a check yourself thing for everybody.”

Morrissey is now averaging 8.4 points per game and a team-high 35.8 minutes per game. Her 50 percent field goal percentage and 42.1 3-point shooting percentage are the highest on the team as well. With a one-to-one assist to turnover ratio, there is certainly room for improvement, but the impact she has made so far is undeniable.

She may not have been a coveted recruit coming out of high school, but she’s not exactly making that clear.

“There’s some kids that walk in here like Aerial and Tori and dominate from the get go,” Merchant said. “And there’s program kids that just stay the course, keep working, keep getting better every single day. When you get your chance, be ready and prepared and do the best you can, and she’s one of those kids.”

Volleyball excited to be underdogs as NCAA tournament begins When the NCAA volleyball tournament kicks off Friday, MSU will be one of the lowest seeded teams in the field and head coach Kathy George likes it that way

Despite a roller coaster season, the volleyball team is as confident heading into the NCAA Tournament. “ We do k now we’re a n underdog,” senior libero and team co-captain Kori Moster said. “That’s something we kind of revel in and use to our advantage.”

MSU (18-13 overall, 11-8 Big Ten) is on a five game winning streak and has only lost one set during that streak. Despite the success, they still feel like they’re being slighted.

“We are absolutely an underdog in this tournament,” head coach Cathy George said. “A lot of people didn’t think we had much going for us early in the year.”

MSU was able to right the ship after losing six of seven games right before the final stretch of the season.

“We were one of the last two teams let into this tournament,” Moster said. “We’re also one of the most dangerous teams out there because of the high level of play and physicality that we have.”

MSU has swept their last three games and haven’t lost a set since Nov. 19 against Northwestern.

The attention to detail and the ability to have a short memory has been key for the surging Spartans.

“We know we’re playing better volleyball, and that’s i mpor ta nt,” George sa id.

“We’re managing points better and we’re responding quicker to mistakes.”

Garvelink honored again No player has embodied the growth of the young Spartan team like freshman middle blocker Alyssa Garvelink, who for the second consecutive week won the Big Ten Freshman of the Week award.

“Gaining that confidence has been leading to my success,” Garvelink said.

Garvelink averaged 3.17 kills per set and two blocks last week as the Spartans swept both No. 24 Purdue and Iowa.

“I feel like we’re a more weathered team and ready for the challenge that’s in front of us,” George said. “We’re talented— we were just young and growing.”

MSU will try to carry its moment um into t he f irst round of the tournament as they head west.

The Spartans will take on Loyola Marymount (23-7 overall, 11-7 West Coast Conference) on Friday night at 7:30 p.m.

The game will take place on Stanford University’s campus in Palo Alto, California.
