Opinion LETTER: Smoking ban on campus wouldn’t make a difference We all want a healthy campus. I’ll just get that right out of the way. MSU has taken many steps to improve the quality of life on campus and they should be commended for such actions. However, we are not the healthiest campus in America. Recently, there have been pushes to turn the campus “smoke-free,” which would prohibit students and faculty from using all forms of tobacco (including smokeless) while on campus.

They cite the negative effects of secondhand smoke, and proponents have depicted the campus as having a seemingly permanent black cloud hovering above it; whose nicotine-infused air robs us of the beauty of our campus. Instead of enforcing policies that were designed to combat the issue of student health, the university wishes to dabble with the most ostentatious ones and parade them through the streets, in the hopes that their health-conscious grandeur will be recognized and respected. Unfortunately, they cannot admit that Sparty is not wearing any clothes.

Yes, secondhand smoke is hazardous to your health if you live with someone who actively smokes inside the dwelling day in and day out.

No one will refute that claim. However, step out-

side and the circumstances are much different.

Once on campus, I will walk past one to two smokers a day, and they’re usually standing right outside the building, a common sight that many of you have witnessed I am sure. However, it has been shown that all it takes for OTS (outdoor tobacco-smoke) levels to subside is an approximate distance of six feet from the source. This means that the mandated 25-feet radius supposedly enforced by the university would already protect students entering in and out of buildings.

If the administration wanted to actually do something about tobacco use on campus, it should start getting serious about the laws that are already in place. The administration should focus on policies that maximize respect for individual choices, and not on ones that just make MSU look like everyone else.

Just because tobacco-free campuses are popular does not mean that they are right for MSU. I implore the administration to reject such hollow, unnecessarily intrusive policies and instead work on enforcing the laws that already exist.

Taylor Swift is the queen of the music industry right now. Everywhere you look, Swift is creeping her way into your daily life promoting her new album. But one place you won’t see her bubbly personality is on the popular music streaming service, Spotify.

According to TIME Magazine, Swift took her albums off of Spotify because she felt that the service wasn’t valuing her music by being a free service. Although Swift would have made close to $6 million this year by having her albums on Spotify, according to TechCrunch, Swift also said she wants to help reverse the trend of decreasing music sales throughout the whole industry.

Swift has a point. Spotify allows you to stream a huge variety of albums for free with relatively few ads in between songs.

With the convenience of having music available for free on their website and on their mobile app, many people are less likely to actually buy music off of iTunes or the physical CD. When I was in elementary school, I loved my boom box.

I loved collecting CDs to blast

in my room or to bring in the car to play. Not only do you get good quality sound with a CD, you get something special to go along with it. You get a unique looking CD and an album cover that usually includes pictures — increasing the value of your music.

Later, iTunes began to dominate my music purchases. I would always feel guilty if I downloaded a song offline without buying it. Although I was (and still am) admittedly a goody two shoes, I always wanted to support my favorite artists.

But, everyone sins. Lately, with money rarely making an appearance in my wallet, I have begun to fall back on Spotify. Don’t get me wrong, Spotify is a great service in theory. Who doesn’t like free stuff?

At first, I used Spotify as a sort of “test drive” for new albums that had been released and seemed like something I would enjoy listening to. If there was a new album or song I thought about buying, I would stream it on Spotify first. However, this soon turned into a more permanent solution to my love of music.

I stopped buying CDs and iTunes cards. New content was showing up less often in my phone’s music library.

This is the heart of the problem. People aren’t buying music anymore. Although music is arguably reaching a broader audience, that doesn’t necessarily translate into higher sales.

Swift has looks and smarts.

By not releasing her new album

“1989” on Spotify, the album sold more than 1.2 million copies in its first week — making it the first album to sell over a million copies in 2014, according to USA TODAY. Before “1989,” I wasn’t really a huge fan of Swift’s music.

But, this album had a profound effect on me. After previewing the songs on iTunes I kept saying to myself, “I need this album!” I went to Spotify to listen to the album in full — but was quickly disappointed to notice its absence.

I may lose my man card for doing this, but I couldn’t stand not having her new album so much that I went over to Target and bought the physical CD with the three Target-exclusive tracks.

After getting this album, I not only found my future wife but also rekindled my love for buying music.

Swift taking her albums off of Spotify was like a huge slap in the face to wake up the music industry. With high profile artists like Swift leading the way, I hope more artists follow suit in the future.

Music simply isn’t something to be rented. Music should be something that is purchased to not only support the artist, but to enjoy music in its highest quality and solidify the memories you have with specific songs. I think it’s safe to say Swift is never, ever getting back together with Spotify.

Silver Bells in the City remains a beloved holiday tradition The annual parade and tree lighting event in downtown Lansing, which first began in 1984, expected to bring in 100,000 local residents this year

Thousands of lights illuminated the eager faces of those who attended Lansing’s 30th celebration of Silver Bells in the City on Friday.

Lansing resident Phillis Handley said the celebration, which takes place every Friday before Thanksgiving, expected to bring in around 100,000 people this year.

“Events like this draw people together,” Handley said, “I’ve seen people here today that I haven’t seen in five or 10 years.”

Silver Bells in the City began in 1984, with only about 2,500 lights surrounding the Washington Square Mall and a community sing. It wasn’t until the third year that the state tree was lit during

the celebration.

The event grew through the years, and in 1997 the Electric Light Parade was introduced.

Communications and Marketing Manager of Downtown Lansing Inc. Layna Anderson said the parade is now the biggest part of Silver Bells in the City.

“Every float in the parade is required to have at least 5,000 lights,” Anderson said.

Lansing resident Jake Keenan, 18, said he has lived there all his life and comes to see Silver Bells in the City every year.

“The parade is my favorite part and (my friend Abigail) has never seen it so I brought her with me this year,” Keenan said.

Handley said her favorite part of the celebration is the marching bands, which compete during the Electric Light Parade

for the Best Illuminated Band award. She also enjoys the community collaboration that the event encourages.

“Silver Bells brings a bigger perspective of what is going on in Lansing. It helps the businesses and shows how they support the community,” Handley said.

Vendors throughout downtown Lansing sell unique and artsy products to attendees during Silver Bells, and cultural institutions and venues in the area are open and free to the public. After the state tree is lit, there are fireworks and a family-friendly concert.

Anderson, who has lived in Lansing for 10 years, says for her Silver Bells in the City is a way to start the holiday season.

“After Silver Bells, the whole city feels different. There’s an air of holiday spirit,” Anderson said.

ASMSU passes bill regulating how to fill GA vacancies

After nearly an hour and a half of heated debate and discussion during ASMSU’s Thursday policy committee meeting, the representatives voted unanimously (7 yes votes, one abstention) to pass a bill that would regulate how vacant positions are filled on the general assembly.

The bill is designed to “amend the ASMSU Code of Operations to create an official process of appointing members of ASMSU to represent colleges with vacant seats in the general assembly for the duration of the assembly’s session,” according to the text of the bill.

“There’s no real process by which appointments to the GA be recommended,” said representative for the College of Social Science and bill introducer Evan Schrage.

There are many vacant seats for representatives on general assembly, but the way they are filled now is very unofficial. The potential representative contacts Vice President of Internal Administration Kathryn Maass, who then drafts a bill to approve the appointment.

The bill would create an appointment board, which will consist of the vice president of internal administration, the vice president of special projects, the ASMSU liaison for university multicultural affairs and “at least one currently serving representative of the college the petitioner is applying for.” The board will have to unanimously approve candidates and the general assembly still has final approval.

Candidates now need 25 signatures from ASMSU taxpayers to be considered, the same number that students who run in general elections need. Part of the inspiration for the bill was to discourage laziness in representative candidates, who may use the vacancy to slip into ASMSU as a resume builder.

“They shouldn’t get to skate by because they didn’t run in the general election like the rest of us did,” Schrage said.

At the start of the policy committee meeting, support for the bill was by no means unanimous. Though the bill seconder, Vice President for Special Projects Ryan Smith said that the four-page bill “was a very big collaborative effort,” some representatives on the committee felt that important people were left out of the bill’s planning, including Maass, who will have the most new responsibilities because of the bill. She said she was only contacted by the bill’s writers earlier in the week.

“Our biggest problem is engagement, so how is this going to get people engaged?” Maass said.

As the discussion on the bill ran on, Representative for the Multicultural Greek Council Andrew Nazzaro suggested discussion be moved to a later date, with Schrage in disagreement.

Schrage said that ASMSU would be “doing ourselves an injustice by tabling big pieces of legislation every time.”

The discussion of the bill became heated, with some proposing to table the bill. Vice President for Governmental Affairs Perlberg said that he didn’t like deep legislation being approved after only one meeting, while Schrage and Smith again said it was meaningful legislation and a vote shouldn’t be delayed.

Rail Jam event seeks to make skiing, snowboarding popular

During the brief amount of time that snow covered MSU’s campus, skiers and snowboarders took to makeshift ramps by the rock on Farm Lane for the second annual Ski Team and Spartan Ski Club Rail Jam. Neuroscience junior Charlie Nicoli, the Spartan Ski Club treasurer, said the groups aim to make skiing and snowboarding more popular at MSU. “(It’s) a collaboration between Ski Team and Spartan Ski Club this year. We just do it to bring skiing and snowboarding to campus, kind of have a little fun before finals start up,” Nicoli said.

The second annual Rail Jam began at 2 p.m. with a threehour open jam session that allowed people to freestyle on the setup just for fun.

“It’s just a fun time, that’s what Spartan Ski Club is all about.

It’s good to kind of experience something new on campus,” he said.

After the open jam session ended at 5 p.m., the Rail Jam competition began. It was judged by some of Mt. Brighton’s staffers, and also some experienced skiers and snowboarders.

“We (had) some awesome prizes from Rome, a couple snow-

boards to give away, some other promo stuff,” Nicoli said.

Marketing senior Patrick Walsh was one of the many students to attend the event. He said he’s been to previous Ski Club events and had a lot of fun, so he decided to come out to Rail Jam. Walsh, a snowboarder himself, said he’s a little timid when it comes to participating in snowboarding events because of past injuries.

“I’ve broken my collarbone and my wrist and a couple other bones variously, but those are from snowboarding,” he said.

Walsh said he’d like to see more events similar to Rail Jam taking place on campus.

“I think they draw a pretty good showing and it kind of brings a different atmosphere during the winter environment,” he said.

Fifth year Lansing Community College welding student Kyle Petersen made it to the secondary finals.

Petersen said his love for snowboarding began 13 years ago, when he would go up north with his family to go skiing.

“I saw snowboarders doing flips and jumps. I had to try it out and caught the bug,” he said.

Petersen said his snowboarding goal is simple – to keep having fun.

“I don’t have any more fun in life than when I’m on a snowboard,” he said.

MSU Moves U program and smartphone app a campus-wide effort to stay active

Not everyone can run five miles a day or stick to a weightlifting routine, but sometimes an individual can stay active through daily tasks. MSU Moves U embraces movement rather than exercise as the key to sustaining a healthy lifestyle.

The MSU Moves U program began as a collaborative effort among students, the Health4U Program through Olin Health Center and the recreation sports facilities on campus. It is targeted at students as well as faculty and staff.

“We want to engage people in movement — it’s hard to exercise,” said Health Promotion Services Integration Coordinator Nancy Allen. “We encourage people to get involved with movement that is fun for them.”

The word “exercise” can be scary for some, so it isn’t used often in the MSU Moves U program. According to Allen, any type of movement is encouraged, like biking or walking.

“It doesn’t have to be competitive,” Allen said. “It’s good for you and your body.”

Health Education Services Coordinator Dennis Martell said the average student’s activity level is not high enough.

“When you’re sitting for class anywhere from four to eight hours, and then you go home and spend a lot of time on technology — our new studies say that most students spend two to four hours a day between texting and Facebook alone,” Martell said.

Sitting for long periods of time can ultimately strain the back or lead to poor posture, Martell said.

“You don’t have to go out there and sweat. We’re really about movement and moving enough of the body during the day,” Martell said.

MSU Moves U recently developed a smartphone app to boost students’ physical activity. The app allows students to view upcoming events and interact with other students.

“We’re trying to make this more productive and fun for people,” Martell said. “It’s a challenge where you can get points for doing certain things.”

The app is being marketed through all residence hall neighborhoods, recreational sports services and student health services.

Kinesiology sophomore Theresa Quaderer became a part of the MSU Moves U program during the Zombie Walk event on campus in October. Quaderer said she keeps her MSU Moves U social media accounts up to date as part of her involvement in the program.

“You meet new people and make friends by getting involved,” Quaderer said. “It was really exciting to see people get others interested and hopefully we can get the word around and make this a big campus program.”

MSU Moves U coordinators are planning more events and additional app developments for the spring semester.

“People from across campus come together and the live interest in movement is great to see,” Allen said. “I think we’ll see it grow and see more interest.”

Field hockey program brings players from around the world Being an international student and a student athlete at the same time isn’t exactly easy. But MSU has brought in players from countries including Scotland, Ireland and New Zealand

Leaving home and going to a Big Ten university such as MSU is a momentous and intimidating prospect for any teenager to take on.

When your home is overseas, that idea takes a whole new meaning.

For field hockey players Heather Howie, Sophie Macadré, Katie Miller and Jenni Smith, the opportunity to play collegiate sports and obtain a world-class education was too big to pass up.

While MSU student athletes come from many parts of the world, not many teams are as well represented as field hockey.

Both Howie and Smith are natives of Scotland, Macadré came to East Lansing from New Zealand and Miller grew up in Ireland. While all their paths to MSU took different forms, one thing became very apparent once they arrived.

Making the commitment Growing up in Glasgow, Scotland, Howie never had plans to go overseas after high school. Once she started playing field hockey at the age of 12, Howie began to excel and eventually worked her way onto the youth national team. It was soon after that Howie was exposed to the idea of going to college in the U.S. It was her junior year at Craigholme School on a rainy day at practice. In the midst of all of the drenched uniforms and mud-filled cleats, the girls began joking about playing abroad.

they arrived on campus as freshmen, it became evident how big of a decision they had made.

“It was crazy,” Smith said of her arrival on campus. “I just carried two huge bags and I was like ‘OK, I’m living out of these for a year.’”

In Howie’s case, the constant distraction of field hockey helped minimize the culture shock. That is, until the season ended.

“We just had so much to do all the time I never even thought about it,” Howie said. “And then once season (was) over and things started to slow down, I was ready to go home.”

Currently in their freshman year, Macadré and Miller are still adjusting to their new surroundings. With no clear memories of her time growing up in the U.S., Miller has been soaking in the American culture.

“There’s definitely a wider range of people,” Miller said.

“Not saying that everyone’s weird, but there’s a lot of different people, a lot of different opinions, which I’m not as used to at home. … So it’s a lot more eye-opening into the different types of people in the world.”

For Macadré, there have been some rough patches since she arrived on campus. Nevertheless, she never wavered in her decision to come to MSU. “Some days have just been really hard,” Macadré said.

“Now, after the season looking back, it’s definitely been worth it. You just take it as it comes.”

Because a trip home would cost well over $1,000, they quickly had to learn to cope with their surroundings instead of settling for a quick escape.

“Obviously freshman year there’s times when you’re like

‘ah!’” Howie said. “It’s hard and I wasn’t doing too well in school, and you’re just like ‘aw geez,’ but … overall I definitely think I made the right decision.”

Making memories As freshmen without much playing time this season, Macadré and Miller have just been trying to soak up the college atmosphere as much as possible.

Between spending time in the locker room and experiencing their first tailgates, both have already made lasting memories in their limited time at MSU. “That’s the best place,” Miller said of the locker room located inside Spartan Stadium. “I just walked in there now and there’s girls sleeping and taking naps in there.”

Macadré looks back at her first couple weeks as some of her favorite moments.

With the team’s initiation process and all of the preseason training, Macadré was able to adjust to the new lifestyle fairly quickly.

Smith and Howie, however, have become much more seasoned.

Now more than four years removed from their arrival in fall 2011, Smith and Howie have become staples of MSU field hockey.

Both have seen action in every game MSU has played since their arrival, excluding the 15 games Howie missed this year because of an injury.

Looking back, both Scotland citizens have made significant contributions over the years and have been a part of a Big Ten championship and an Elite Eight run in the NCAA Tournament.

said. “But beating Syracuse on their home field and flying the private jet was pretty close.”

While Smith also looked back fondly at those moments, her lasting memories will be the ones made off the field.

“At Rick’s (American Cafe),” Smith jok-

ingly said. “No, I don’t know, just being with the team. Preseason obviously sucks because we’re running all the time.

But we went kayaking this year and we went laser tagging the other year. It’s just stuff that we do as a team … because we’re just like a big family really.”

News Obama issues executive actions to protect undocumented immigrants

President Obama issued a series of executive actions Thursday night, detailing a plan to protect 5 million undocumented immigrants from deportation.

“Our immigration system is broken and everybody knows it,” Obama said. “Mass amnesty would be unfair.

Mass deportation would be both impossible and contrary to our character.”

The plan, which is one of the broadest immigration reforms in U.S. history, will allow parents of U.S. citizens or lawful permanent residents to work in the country for a period of three years.

The number of undocumented children who were brought to the United States was also expanded. The plan also makes it easier for immigrants trained in high tech jobs to enter the country.

It focuses immigration enforcement more on criminals, immigrants with ties to terrorist groups or gangs and people who crossed the border in the past year.

These people will be most susceptible to deportation.

MSU College Democrats President Brianna Shamsuddoha said Obama’s move was “a step in the right direction.”

“This is something that needed to be done,” Shamsuddoha said. “I think it was great. It sets the tone for the next two years.”

House Speaker John Boehner and many other Republicans are outraged with the Obama’s reforms, calling them “sabotage” and illegal.

“President Obama has cemented his legacy of lawlessness and squandered what little credibility he had left,” Boehner said.

Publisher of Gongwer News Service John Lindstrom told The State News he believes Obama’s decision to issue an executive order was a “gambit to force Congress to do something about immigration.”

Lindstrom paraphrased what Obama has previously alluded to in interviews, “If you don’t like it, come up with something else.”

MSU Opera performances go beyond just singing

Student group Advantage gives thanks for educational opportunities

Each time he steps on stage, vocal performance senior Jon Oakley acknowledges that it is an opportunity for more than just showcasing his talent.

While most of his family and friends are unfamiliar with opera productions, Oakley finds purpose in using his skills to create a new experience for the audience.

“It’s always great to give people exposure to a different art form that they have never really seen,” he said. “A lot of people have predispositions about opera and they think it’s just people standing and singing, but that’s not the case. It is full theater.”

After going through the competitive process and securing a spot in the MSU Opera Theatre for his fourth year, Oakley said he recognizes the significant change in the confidence and knowledge he is able to bring to each performance.

While preparing for their production of Mozart’s Così fan tutte, which debuted Nov. 19 in Fairchild Theatre, students in the opera theater were able to collaborate with guest conductor Marcello Cormio.

Originally from Italy, Cormio has conducted in both academic and professional settings throughout the U.S. and Europe for many years.

Guest conducting for his first time at MSU, Cormio said the level of professionalism that the students have demonstrated in their performance and work ethic has made it one of his best conducting experiences to date.

“I haven’t found anything I was missing in terms of the highest artistic level, preparation or vocal ability,” he said. “It’s very interesting how very often you find young students who have a commitment and enthusiasm that sometimes you don’t even find in professional settings.”

allows students to experience all of the elements that encompass a professional opera performance.

“One of the reasons we love opera is because it’s everything,” Helton said.

“It’s drama, it’s costumes, it’s scenery, it’s glorious music, it’s the human voice unamplified.”

Performing in the opera theater for her fifth year, vocal performance graduate student Schyler Sheltrown said the program fosters healthy competition and provides a variety of experiences that have helped her to build up her resume and continue preparing for her entrance into

the professional world of music.

“In my undergrad, I was in an opera almost every semester, which is huge for an undergraduate music major because most colleges focus more on the master’s program,” she said. “We also double cast every show in this program. At other places, that could get really cutthroat, but here, it’s only encouraging.”

Although working with faculty members within the College of Music continues to be beneficial, Sheltrown said having the opportunity to work alongside guest conductors that bring a new level of musicianship allows her to challenge herself.

Growing up on the west side of Detroit, college wasn’t a subject often discussed with material science engineering senior Clarence Jilek.

It is a topic of conversation at Advantage, which is a minority retention program for MSU students that meets every Tuesday. It aims to ensure that students achieve their educational goals while attending MSU. The theme of the most recent event was for students to discuss “why” and “what I am thankful for.” Approaching Thanksgiving, discussions of why you attend MSU and what you are thankful for was appropriate, members said.

“Everybody’s (mother) had this plan about their kids going to college and none of my boys ever did,” Jilek said. “My ‘why’ is graduating and being successful for those mothers because I am, in a sense, their son.”

Jilek said he wants to set a platform for everybody else from his hometown, including himself, but mainly for the future and “letting them know if I can make it then you definitely can too.”

The staff put on skits for the audience portraying potential circumstances where students may feel lost and feel as though they aren’t thankful for anything, but eventually overcome.

Secondary education senior Kaylen English, president of Advantage, said it was important for freshmen and upperclassmen to share stories with one another.

“It can get hard at MSU and sometimes I want to give up,” English said. “This was a way to connect with students because some of us are here for the same reasons.”

She said it’s important for any student to always remind themselves of why they’re at MSU, and why they should stay.

“My ‘why’ originally was my degree, but now it is making sure people feel better than I do on my bad days,” Human development and family studies senior Ona Ventour said. “I have the ability to put that aside and make somebody feel good, which in turn makes me feel good.”

Ventour said having the opportunity to make someone else feel good reminds her that she is still useful, even on days when she feels she isn’t. She utilizes her bad days by going to class, going to work and volunteering.

“That in itself is my motivation. It strengthens me and it helps repair me,” Ventour said.

Undergraduate University Division adviser Walter Bivens was the guest speaker. He gave a speech on how different methods of utilizing information is important in life.

“You have your own relationship with you,” Bivens said. “If you cheat and if you mess up, if you slack then you’re the one that has to deal with you at the end of the day.”

Bivens also shared a story about how his mother was told she wasn’t going to have any children, but soon after gave birth to him. He said he is thankful for his life every day, and reminded the students that they have so much to be thankful for themselves.

“If you don’t have anything that you can be thankful for and be happy about when you wake up in the morning, you will never really be able to experience the life you really want to live,” Bivens said.

Mark Dantonio had fun with the playbook during MSU football’s win over Rutgers

Football is a serious, physical and intense game. Especially at a high competitive level like in the Big Ten. But that doesn’t mean it can’t be fun. Head coach Mark Dantonio made it fun for MSU Saturday with some unconventional play calling that led to a number of smiles following the 45-3 victory over Rutgers in the Spartans’ final home game of the season.

Dantonio mixed it up a little bit Saturday when the game was in hand, giving a couple of guys who weren’t used to getting their hands on the ball a chance to shine. This included an end around run from senior offensive lineman Connor Kruse and a fake field goal run by sophomore kicker Michael Geiger — one going for a big gain and the other not so much.

by Geiger in the third quarter.

Geiger was tossed the ball from senior punter and holder Mike Sadler and he sprinted toward the left touchdown pylon but stepped out of bounds right before getting into the endzone.

Following the game, Dantonio said he probably should have challenged the play to see if Geiger actually scored, but in the end the speedy kicker was happy with the run. Geiger said he used to play defensive back in high school and that helped play a role in the speed he showed off Saturday.

the engine, but it’s just unfortunate I got out at the one.”

Even more out of the norm was the run by Kruse. In the past, Dantonio has looked to reward the offensive linemen by giving them the chance to run the ball instead of blocking for a change, and Kruse was the lucky one who got the carry Saturday.

“I don’t mean to throw it as an insult towards anybody, but there is nothing like letting an offensive lineman run the football,” Dantonio said. “You know what it means to those guys. If you have ever been an offensive lineman, you know that touching the football is like finding gold out there.”

The play had originally been planned for fellow senior offensive lineman and team captain Travis Jackson, but he went down with a left foot or leg injury during the first half. Kruse only picked up one yard on the run, and he was the first to say afterward that it was a generous spot on the run, but he was happy with simply getting the opportunity to run the ball.

Kruse said these types of fun opportunities is one of the many factors that has made his time at MSU so special and something he’ll never forget.

“I love seeing other guys do things like that too, I mean it’s fun for the whole team to have something great to talk about like that,” Kruse said. “I’m going to take a ton of crap from the guys for not getting any yards or how they gave me one yard and things like that, but that’s fine with me. I just got the opportunity to run the ball and it’s something special that I’ll never forget.”

The men’s soccer team (12-4-5 overall, 4-2-2 Big Ten) advanced to the Sweet Sixteen by defeating the Oakland Golden Grizzlies (10-7-3 overall, 5-0-3 Horizon) 1-0 in the second round of the NCAA Tournament Sunday afternoon.

This was the second time this season the Spartans played the Golden Grizzlies, this time avenging their 2-0 loss Oct. 22 during the regular season.

“This is a tough game when you have these in-state rivalries. Oakland is very well-coached,” head coach Damon Rensing said. “(We were) picked to win this game. It’s expected, and I thought our guys played a little bit like that.

“You gotta give our guys a lot of credit. It was an emotional game, fantastic crowd and we found a way to survive and advance,” he said.

The first half saw each team generate plenty of opportunities but neither could put one into the back of the net. A great shot by Golden Grizzlies junior forward Gerald Ben hit the crossbar at the 12:58 mark.

MSU also had its fair share of chances. MSU senior forward Adam Montague fought his way behind the defense, firing a shot that forced Oakland freshman goalkeeper Wes Mink to make a miraculous save at the 34:49 mark.

The Spartans took 10 shots and two corner kicks in the half compared to eight shots and two corner kicks by the Golden Grizzlies. Much like the first time these two teams met, the first half was scoreless.

After giving up two second half goals back on the Oct. 22 matchup, the second half for the Spartans was a bit different the second time around against Oakland. At the 66:13 mark of the second half MSU junior defender Zach Carroll scored on a header off of an assist by sophomore midfielder Dewey Lewis giving MSU the 1-0 lead.

The MSU defense held on, earning junior goalkeeper Zach Bennett another shutout. Oakland had a few good opportunities late, forcing Bennett to make a crazy one-handed save by volleying the ball in one hand several times before securing it.

“I popped my right hand up, it went up in the air and one of their guys started bodying me up and I couldn’t really pull my left hand up, so I just kept bobbling it to myself,” Bennett said. “I’m sure I scared the bejesus out of the coaching staff, but I controlled it and ended up holding on to it.”

MSU had 14 shots and four corner kicks total, despite a losing outcome Oakland had an advantage in both with 16 shots and six corner kicks.

MSU will play the winner of Washington vs. Furman in the Sweet Sixteen next Sunday at DeMartin Stadium.

After an emotional loss to No. 3 Notre Dame, No. 15 MSU was back in action at Breslin Center taking on the Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis Jaguars.

MSU looked sluggish at times but was able to pull out a 64-45 win after a 20-9 run to end the game.

“It just wasn’t our best performance,” head coach Suzy Merchant said. “I was a little worried about that coming off a big, emotional game like Notre Dame.”

The Spartans’ leading scorers were two familiar faces, as sophomore guard Tori Jankoska had 22 points and sophomore forward Aeriel Powers had 17 points along with 13 rebounds. Powers and Jankoska have led the Spartans in scoring every game this season.

Jankoska said she has been working on taking more efficient shots, and the results showed as she was 11-of-13 from the floor.

“Today I focused on taking good shots,” she said. “Shot selection is always important. I want to focus on 3-point shot selection and getting to the free-throw line.”

MSU out-rebounded IUPUI 39-33. Merchant said she was happy with the way the team rebounded, but Powers said the team can do better.

“I think we should have done a little bit more,” she said. “I think the issue is not pursuing the ball well.”

Merchant said she knew IUPUI would be a good rebounding team, and she was happy with her team’s effort, especially on the defensive end.

“We tried to focus on making sure they were one and done on the defensive end.

“I’m not sure we did a great job once they broke us down, but for the most part I think our team is trying to work on the one and dones.”

Powers said she didn’t think the Notre Dame loss entered the minds of the players today.

“I’m not sure if it was an emotional hangover,” she said. “I just think our intensity wasn’t the same.”

Jankoska said although the players tried not to let that loss creep into their minds, it’s tough to prepare for everyone the same way.

“You come into the game and try to get your mind set the same way for each game,”she said.

“I think I do as much as I can, but Notre Dame and this team are not the same.”

Merchant and the players said this is a team that is still trying to find an identity.

“It’s too early to tell,” Merchant said. “That’s what November and December are for, you’re trying to find out what kind of team you’ll be.”

Win over Rutgers gives George 550 for career

Volleyball head coach Cathy George won her 550th game in impressive fashion Saturday night.

MSU (16-13 overall, 9-9 Big Ten) swept Rutgers (7-24 overall, 0-18 Big Ten), 3-0 (25-15, 25-17, 25-16) at Jenison Field House.

“I think we just tried to keep up to our game,” sophomore outside hitter Chloe Reinig said. “They were playing at a slower pace and we didn’t want to fall down to that level, we just tried to stay intense and tried to stay positive.”

The win extended MSU’s win streak to three games and bought their conference record back to .500.

MSU defeated Northwestern, 3-1 (25-15, 25-27, 25-9, 25-13) Wednesday night in Evanston, Illinois.

Reinig, who had nine kills, didn’t post her usual gaudy numbers against the Scarlet Knights but that was because freshman middle blocker Alyssa Garvelink stole the show.

Garvelink tied her career high with 12 kills Saturday and hit at a .667 clip, which was a careerhigh for the Holland, Michigan, native. “(Alyssa) was killing it,” Reinig said. “We just kept giving her the ball and she just kept putting it down, when people are on fire like that you just gotta keep feeding them.”

Garvelink was scorching hot to start the game off, converting all five of her attacks in the first set to kills.

“I think the past couple of games I’ve been doing really well and that has gave me confidence,” Garvelink said. “It carried over into tonight.”

Garvelink has had at least nine kills in three of her last

four games.

“She’s a force to be reckoned with,” George said. “She showed that tonight with some versatility, we look forward to her continuing on for us years to come as well.”

The Spartans are off until Wednesday night, when they host No. 16 Purdue (22-8 overall, 12-6 Big Ten) at Jenison Field House in the team’s final home matchup of the regular season.

Purdue will come to East Lansing trying to bounce back from a shocking loss Saturday night.

The Boilermakers had been on a three-game win streak before losing to Minnesota (1811 overall, 8-10 Big Ten), 0-3 (2125, 17-25, 16-25).

Purdue already has the advantage in the season series.

MSU lost to the Boilermakers in West Lafayette, Indiana, on Sept. 27, 1-3 (22-25, 22-25, 28-26, 23-25).
