ASMSU organizes MSU’s It’s On Us campaign ASMSU is trying to raise money for more counselors in MSU’s Counseling Center

The It’s On Us campaign, spearheaded by the White House, is currently in its first National Week of Action on college campuses across the country.

The MSU campaign was primarily organized by the Associated Students of Michigan State University after federal organizers reached out to them, among hundreds of other universities in the nation.

ASMSU officials gathered support from many on-campus student organizations including greek life and all major student governing boards. Other co-organizers who are working with ASMSU include the Asian Pacific American Student Organization and the makers of the “Every Two Minutes� documentary, according to an ASMSU press release.

Social media and a push for The State News’ editorial support were some of the ways in which ASMSU tried to get word out about the week.

ASMSU president James Conwell said that sexual assault is a major student issue at MSU, and ASMSU wants students to understand what sexual assault is, know what it means to be an effective bystander and how to “intervene in situations that are unsafe for other students. And to be a good Spartan, to make sure everyone gets home safe.�

The second goal that ASMSU had in mind when getting involved in the campaign was to push for more resources for the MSU Counseling Center, whose waiting list is longer than the number of counselors can handle. This makes the wait last between two and four weeks, according to Chief of Staff Kiran Samra.

The Counseling Center is staffed by one counselor from MSU and two from the Justice Department. ASMSU officials are saying this isn’t nearly enough to deal with the number of people who need help. “We want to be sure that the survivors of sex-

Conwell said.

The National Week of Action is being looked at by ASMSU as a kickoff week to raise money on their website for the Counseling Center, specifically to hire a new counselor to assist in sexual assault counseling efforts.

ASMSU aims to raise between $40,000 and $50,000 and both Conwell and Samra are confident that goal can be reached by the end of

the year. The monetary goal by the end of this week is set at $3,000 to $4,000.

After the National Week of Action concludes, ASMSU is going to assess how the week went and look for ways to continue raising awareness, though nothing is planned yet. “At the end of the week, what we’re going to need to do is come back, regroup and really assess what was successful, what wasn’t successful, and go from there and decide what our next step would be,� Samra said.

Conwell said it was his responsibility as a student leader to press the issue of sexual assault as long as there are students on campus who are being sexually assaulted. “It’s just simply not right, and it’s something that, as a student leader, I can’t just let go,�

Conwell said. “I have to go forward with this issue and make sure that all students at Michigan State University have an equal opportunity to succeed and are safe (during) their time here at MSU.�

International students usually get asked a lot of questions about their countries and sometimes that requires them to go back to their country with a different perspective to learn more.

When finance sophomore Jiayi Shang came to the United States, she always thought she had to stay in the country after graduation to find a job. She didn’t start thinking differently until she went on an MSU-organized trip to her home country, China.

Shang was one of eight students who went on the first International Corporate Tour to China organized by the MSU Career Services Network during summer 2014.

After hearing about the tour, Shang realized it would be a good opportunity for her to better understand her major and learn more about what she would do as a financier upon entering the work force.

“I was just a freshman, didn’t have much experience, didn’t know much about my major,� she said.

That was the first year the network sent students to Hong Kong and Shanghai. Corporate tours have been offered to students for the past eight years, but were mostly open for engineering and business students, Associate Director of Employer Relations at the Career Services Network Eric Doerr said.

This year Career Services Network decided to create a similar experience for undergraduate students from different disciplines and especially international backgrounds to go on such a tour within Michigan.

Doerr said one of the purposes of the visit is to introduce students to global corporations in Michigan, so the services network will try and match companies here with businesses based in China.

In addition, the tour is meant to connect both international and domestic students while providing them with the opportunity

to learn about different work opportunities in Michigan and network with employers.

Doerr said students would definitely visit corporations in Detroit and Grand Rapids.

Other possible locations would include Kalamazoo, Midland, Lansing and East Lansing, said Career Services Network Events Manager Maya Craft.

Students would commute together each day from East Lansing to these locations and come back on the same day.

Craft said the corporate tour mainly targets freshmen and sophomores. “To get professional-ready, you need to start early,� Craft said.

Shang said going on such trips allows students to understand the culture of the work place and how people collaborate.

Other corporate tours include an international tour in Europe and a domestic tour during spring break to Chicago and Milwaukee. These tours are mostly open for business and engineering students.

Twenty years of success, growth and determination Men’s basketball head coach Tom Izzo began his time with the Spartans 20 years ago. Tom Izzo is wondering what the big deal is about number 20.

Izzo tipped off his 20th season at the helm of the men’s basketball team last Friday against Navy. In his two decades with the program, few schools have seen the success the Spartans have under Izzo’s guidance.

But Izzo isn’t interested in celebrating milestones.

Quite frankly, year 20 just isn’t that different from year 19 for him.

“You know, I never thought about it until everybody started making a big deal about 20,” Izzo said.

“Twenty is just a number. What’s the difference from 19? It’s a one year difference. But for some reason it’s a milestone period or time and when you look around the country, what makes me feel good is that we’ve been able to consistently hang in that pretty solid way of running our program.”

Though he is reluctant to acknowledge the importance of his accomplishment, it’s tough to deny that 20 years as a head coach is an important milestone.

Only two active power conference coaches have been around longer than Izzo — Syracuse’s Jim Boeheim (38 seasons) and Duke’s Mike Krzyzewski (34 seasons).

Not many coaches can match what Izzo has accomplished since he took the men’s basketball program over from Jud Heathcote in 1995 — six Final Four appearances, 17 consecutive NCAA berths, eight National Coach of the Year honors and an NCAA Championship, among many other notable achievements.

Beyond the numbers, Izzo has become revered for other things, such as his joking nature in interviews, and his ability to consistently succeed with teams regarded as less talented in comparison to those of his peers, and his desire to not only develop good players, but good people as well.

Izzo has built a legend in his two decades in East Lansing. And in a competitive college sports realm, it’s impressive how few enemies Izzo has made over the years.

“I think what really makes him a great coach and what shines through is his record,” ESPN basketball analyst and noted Izzo supporter Jay Bilas said in a phone interview. “He’s of such high character. I don’t know anybody who says a bad word about Tom. I don’t know anybody. And if I did hear someone say a negative word about him, I’d immediately look sideways at that person like ‘what’s wrong with you?’”

A Player’s Coach Heathcote — who retired at the age of 68 after 19

seasons at the helm — admitted in a phone interview that he never thought Izzo would eventually surpass him in years coached at MSU. “I worked hard to get him the job, and I knew he’d be a successful coach because he improved every year that he was an assistant, and then the last couple years, an associate head coach,” Heathcote said. “But I never dreamed he’d stay there 20 years. I think he did that to spite me, he’s broken all my records.”

Heathcote watched MSU fall to Duke, 87-77, in the Champions Classic on Tuesday and came away

impressed. Despite the talent disparity between the two teams — Duke currently has nine former McDonald’s All-Americans on its roster — the Spartans remained in striking distance for most of the game.

“Some people say you’re as good as your players, yet I think Tom gets the most out of his players and other coaches don’t,” Heathcote said.

According to Scout.com, the Spartans have had just eight five-star recruits since 2002. In comparison, Kentucky has had 19, Duke has had 11 and Kansas has had six since 2010. But MSU is consis-

With head coach Tom Izzo at the helm, MSU has seen 15 of 18 drafted players go on to the NBA, eight of which were drafted in the first round. Here are a few of the most memorable:

Shannon Brown (2003-06) Former guard Shannon Brown was drafted in the first round of the 2006 draft No. 25 overall. Brown is currently playing for the Miami Heat in what is his ninth season.

Mateen Cleaves (1996-00) Cleaves won a National Championship with the Spartans in 2000, played in six NBA seasons from 2000-09, with a few stints in the Development League.

Kalin Lucas (2007-2011) Former guard Kalin Lucas re-signed with the Memphis Grizzlies on Nov. 19 and made his NBA debut the next day.

Morris Peterson (1995-00) Former forward Morris Peterson was drafted in the first round No. 21 overall, also a member of the National Championship team, played 11 seasons in the NBA from 2000-11.

Draymond Green (2008-12) Former forward Draymond Green was drafted No. 35 overall in the second round of the 2012 draft. Green is his third NBA season, all played for the Golden State Warriors. Former forward Andre Huston (1997-01) was drafted in the second round of the 2001 draft No. 51 overall.

Jason Richardson (1999-01) Former guard and forward Jason Richardson (1999-01) was drafted in the first round No. 5 overall in the 2001 draft. Richardson is currently playing for the Philadelphia 76ers Zach Randolph (2000-01) Senior center Adreian Payne goes up for a point while defended by Ohio state center Amir Williams Former center Zach Randolph was drafted in on Jan. 7 at Breslin Center. The most recent players to come through MSU are former guard Gary Harris (2012-14) and former forward Adreian Payne (2010-14). Both are in their rookie seasons. Payne was drafted by the Atlanta Hawks in the first round No. 15 overall, and Harris was drafted by the Denver Nuggets in the first round No. 19 overall.

Tom Izzo Revelry after basketball losses has always angered Tom Izzo

March 27, 1999, will be remembered as one of the most disheartening nights for Spartan basketball.

MSU was in the Final Four of the NCAA semifinals for the first time since their national championship in 1979, and lost to the No. 1-seed Duke.

It also became the first night couch burning and rioting was linked to an MSU basketball game, something head coach Tom Izzo has frequently spoken out against.

The 1999 incident resulted in well over 5,000 students taking to the streets of East Lansing causing nearly half a million dollars in property damages.

The event disgusted basketball coach Tom Izzo, who was still in St. Petersburg, Florida, at the time.

“I hope they never attend another Michigan State basketball game as long as they live,” Izzo said.

According to Izzo, the riots did nothing to help the university’s image and especially harmed the recruiting process.

“If you have season tickets,” he said, staring

directly into television cameras, “I’ll buy them and I hope you never come to a Michigan State game again.”

Similar revelries took place in 2003 and 2005, after NCAA tournament losses to Texas and the University of North Carolina, respectively.

On March 30, 2003, about 2,000 people flooded East Lansing streets, causing about $40,000 in damage. Police released more than 135 canisters of tear gas on campus and in the city, attempting to disperse the revelers.

In 2005, 21 students were arrested at Cedar Village and the East Lansing Police Department found themselves under fire for releasing tear gas within 20 minutes of the end of the UNC game to disperse large crowds, according to State News archives.

After other basketball losses, students have reacted by burning couches, as recently as 2013.

“The people who take part in such activity are not true Spartan fans,” said MSU spokesperson Jason Cody. “MSU needs the community to dispel itself of the notion that these activities are OK, or that they are some type of ‘tradition’ to be proud of.”

believes that there is not yet a stigma on MSU as a ‘riot school’ but the trend of violent celebrations is troubling.

“In my 17 years here, I have noticed that the bigger disturbances tend to follow sporting events,” Gonzalez said. “Football related incidents are

growing but basketball has always caused the biggest reaction.”

And for Tom Izzo, the riots have been a black mark on his twenty years at MSU. “They undid a lot of what we tried to build,” Izzo said.

When assigned this column, I was troubled on what would be the best thing to focus on when addressing Tom Izzo.

The subject could range anywhere from his great achievements on the court to what he’s done for this university to even what he’s done for this whole state of Michigan in general. The possibilities were endless and I was somewhat overwhelmed. I mean, we are talking about a man who has achieved so much here at MSU and across the state during the past 20 years.

But luckily for me I was given the best piece of advice by one of my editors, who simply said write about what Izzo has meant to me. And it clicked like a light bulb in my head — Izzo may be the No. 1 reason why I’m at MSU, and why I’m even sitting here writing this column for The State News.

Growing up in a Spartan family, the chants of “Go green, go white” were instilled into my blood throughout my childhood. So when it came time to apply to colleges, obviously MSU was on my list. But it wasn’t the only school on it.

I had looked around at other smaller schools, mainly for competing at lower scale college athletics, and during the fall of 2011 I was sitting right smack dab in the middle on which route I wanted to take. But

in the end I was sold on MSU because of the passion I had for the Spartans’ collegiate sports, mainly basketball because of its constant success under Izzo.

I had been so invested in Izzo’s teams throughout my childhood that my whole week would be centered around the two days the team played. If it was a Tuesday night game, I would spend the whole day at school looking forward to that opening tip. It was like motivation to get through the day, my piece of dessert.

When March rolled around, it was no different.

March stands as one of my favorite months of the year because of Izzo. It’s taken for granted how I just expect MSU to be in the NCAA Tournament every year since Izzo has only missed the big dance twice throughout my entire lifetime.

Being able to bank on getting to watch the Spartans in the postseason is something that not a lot of fan bases can say about their respective team and helped groom my love for MSU. The final big reason for how Izzo impacted my decision to come to MSU was the dream of being a part of the group named after him — the Izzone. Being a part of the Izzone has been a great experience because Izzo makes the students feel like they are part of the team. Through his actions and how he has constantly pointed to the students as a huge impact in the game, it has made me feel as close to the program without playing on the court.

So with all of those things being said, when I look back at my decision to come to MSU, it now appears to easily have been a no-brainer. And a lot of that can be credited to Izzo, and I’m sure plenty of other Spartans would have a similar story on how and why they ended up here in East Lansing.

Tom Izzo Izzo and Mark Dantonio have developed a close friendship

It’s not common for programs to have the success in both basketball and football that MSU has had, which makes it even less common for the two coaches of those teams to be as close as Tom Izzo and Mark Dantonio have become over the years.

Since Dantonio came to East Lansing in 2007, Izzo has taken Dantonio under his wing as the football team has climbed to new heights.

“That was a benefit,” Dantonio said.

Dantonio also said he and Izzo have spoken plenty of times about MSU’s rivalry with Michigan.

“Me and coach Izzo have talked frequently about this,” he said. “We’re kind of on the same wave length.”

Izzo also said during a taping of the popular ESPN show “First Take” that he was instrumental in getting Dantonio to come from Cincinnati to East Lansing.

“Nick Saban and I came at the same time,” Izzo said.

“Mark Dantonio came in as an assistant coach and really did an incredible job.”

That, according to Izzo, is when their friendship started.

“We became friends, our wives became friends (and)

our daughters are the same age,” he said.

Izzo said he was one of the people who was able to bring Dantonio into town.

“When he left for Ohio State, I watched him win the national championship there as a defensive coordinator,” he said. “Then I watched him go to Cincinnati, and, after the job he did, I got to be one of three or four people that go to interview Mark. Everybody did their job and I played a small part.”

Izzo has always had a love for football. He grew up with former NFL head coach Steve Mariucci and said he almost left his basketball assistant coaching position at Northern Michigan for a football coaching position at Cal State Fullerton with Mariucci.

“I almost did go there,” he said. “There was a position open there in the defensive backs, which is the position I played, and I love football.”

Izzo said in the same interview that he loves MSU’s success in football because he can experience the success of a sport he loves. Dantonio has reciprocated the support by coming to many of the Big Ten basketball games inside Breslin Center during his tenure.

Izzo has been to plenty of football games himself, even sitting in the student section following a lightning delay in 2013 against South Florida.

Cheering on the sideline during many of MSU head basketball coach Tom Izzo’s 20 years at MSU have been his children, 14-year-old Steven and communication sophomore, Raquel.

At first, Raquel said she didn’t want to attend MSU, the place where she grew up. She said she wanted to find herself, especially since college is the time to do so.

But she eventually realized MSU is her home and she decided to attend.

The State News talked to Raquel about her favorite part of basketball season, her personal goals for after graduation and her best memories as a student so far.

The State News: Would you say your dad influenced you to apply and then come to MSU? Why or why not?

Raquel Izzo: Yes and no. I honestly didn’t want to come here as a freshman in high school. I’ve been in East Lansing my whole life, I wanted to branch out to do my own thing. My junior year in high school, we were at the Big Ten tournament. I was with my mom sitting in our hotel room and had one of those ‘aha!’ moments and knew this was where I wanted to be.

SN: Has having someone so important to the MSU community as your dad affected your social life, either positively or negatively?

RI: Yes, both good and bad. Only bad because when I was younger, I didn’t know who wanted to be my friend for me instead of who my dad was. I wanted to be normal. But now I’ve realized this is my normal. I don’t know anything else. To me, he’s my dad and to my friends, he’s the guy who cooks chili and makes popcorn. If people find out, they find out, but I don’t make it known who I am. It’s cool to see how kids look up to him as such a big role model. It’s more of a blessing now than when I was younger.

SN: What are some of your goals for after graduation?

RI: I either want to be a sports broadcaster or event planner but I might change my mind. I also want to be involved with the community service stuff my parents are involved in.

SN: What is one of your best memories as a student so far?

RI: I would say getting to know Lacey (Holsworth) and going through the journey with her and Adreian (Payne) and winning the Big Ten tournament last year.

SN: You’re in a sorority, what made you pursue greek life and what do you like about it?

RI: Last year, I was sick with mono(nucleosis) and I wasn’t feeling better until January. I went home a lot and I didn’t meet a lot of people like I wanted to. So, I joined (Chi Omega) to meet people and get involved with community service.

SN: Do you have any funny anecdotes about you and your dad?

RI: I work in the basketball office, so I see him all the time. Sometimes we eat lunch together at the cafeteria in Brody. He’s more on the inside of my life now than when I was in high school. I didn’t think that was how it was going to be. I didn’t know at first if I wanted him to be in my life all the time, because I wanted to find me, but I like it.

SN: Does your family travel with the team for all of the away games?

RI: During the season, I pick one away game to go to. I go to one, just me and him and sometimes my brother. We get that father-daughter bonding time. If this game is on a weekend or close, I might go but it depends with school. I get to go to practice. I’m really close to all the guys on the team. My dad makes it a real big family atmosphere, the guys on the team are like my brothers and it’s always been that way.

We’re on the same page now since I’m in college and we get along really great. Sometimes the team comes over for dinner and before they have come over to go trick-or-treating .

SN: What is your favorite part about basketball season?

RI: Definitely going to the games. I’ve always been involved. Last year, the girls in my hall would come to my dorm and see how I would act watching the games. I yell and throw things at the TV. It’s not just “oh, we lost tonight” to our family, it’s so much more than that. It’s success and working hard to achieve a goal. Appreciating that it’s more than a game is my favorite part.

Tom Izzo The Izzone is ‘the foremost basketball student section in the nation’

What used to be a student section comprised of just a few dozen individuals has now grown to become a role model for student sections across the country.

The Izzone is an iconic aspect of MSU, one that plays a key role in many Spartan experiences.

“It’s something that really defines my college experience and career at Michigan State,” Izzone co-director and supply chain management senior Greg Jackson said. “The Izzone is the foremost basketball student section in the nation.“We are the loudest, and we are the best.”

The Izzone was formed by a partnership between the Student Alumni Foundation, now known as the Association of Future Alumni, the athletic department and Izzo himself. The goal of forming this student section was to create a student body that would support the basketball team while also representing the university in a positive way.

While numbers have grown and rules about attendance and arrival time have been instated, Jackson said not much has changed about the Izzone.

There are a few different chants and signs from when it first started, but the student section has been very consistent.

What was once called “Jud’s Jungle,” named after coach Jud Heathcote, was renamed the “Izzone” in the mid ’90s when Tom Izzo took over the position of head coach, Jackson said.

Since this switch in name and leadership, the student section has continued to grow.

Jackson said there is a lot of demand for tickets and priority seating in the Izzone, which shows just how premier the section is.

“Students will do a lot to be a part of it,” Jackson said.

For some it’s a family tradition.

“It’s kind of something I get to share with my parents,” said kinesiology junior Carrie Freeman, whose parents were part of the Izzone when it first began. “It’s a leg-
