University service workers deserve more respect

I can’t describe how infuriating it is to see a messy and used tray left on a table in the dining hall.

Although cooks, servers and other workers get a paycheck every two weeks, they are still doing students a service. The excuse of “that’s their job” isn’t completely true.

Their job isn’t to walk around tables and find an empty tray left over by someone — that’s what the tray return is for.

People who work the dish section have a grotesque job. It can get very messy back there, and I can only imagine how it is during the breakfast, lunch and dinner rush.

Some workers are assigned to circulate the dining hall and wipe down tables. Imagine it’s five minutes before their shift ends and their boss asks them to double check one last time.

Finding a tray with dirty dishes and napkins only makes their shift run longer than it already has, especially if it’s at the end of late night. Now that worker has to pick up the tray, bring it to the back and stay an extra five minutes because a student didn’t feel like bringing in their tray.

There may have been some instances when someone didn’t realize they had to

take their tray to the return. But I’ve also witnessed many visitors and people on field trips follow these simple directions.

So please, don’t be lazy.

This stretches beyond dining hall work.

One night my suitemates were having a good time on a Wednesday. I decided to take one of my spontaneous naps earlier that day, and ended up waking up at 3 a.m.

I heard one of my suitemates get sick in our bathroom, but I had to pee so bad. I figured she just threw up in the toilet. So I went in with my Clorox clean up ready and was shocked to see that she actually threw up in the sink.

It stayed like that until the morning, and by that time I went to the front desk to fill out a request for maintenance, since the sink was clogged and unusable for me to brush my teeth, or anything else for that matter.

Custodial services informed me that they would not unclog the sink until her mess was cleaned up because it was not their job to. This makes complete sense. They handed me a bucket and told me to let them know when the sink was washed.

Moral of the story is, don’t assume someone’s job description. Just because they are paid to do something doesn’t mean you can take advantage of them. We’re not in kindergarten, we’re grown-up people at a university.

The little things really do matter. If you’re finished with your food, put it in the tray return. It takes no more than a minute. If you get sick, use the toilet — it flushes.

Should MSU officials cease licensing with JanSport?

LETTER: MSU Sexual Assault Program needs more resources The MSU Sexual Assault Program is in need of more funding to hire more licensed counselors.

While much of the program’s work can be done by volunteers, we are trained only in crisis intervention.

We can help in the moment — talking someone through a panic attack, meeting a survivor at the hospital for an exam, calling to see if a local shelter has an open bed — but we are not professionally licensed.

Our empathy and desire to provide support cannot replace the years of schooling and thousands of practice hours of a counselor.

Even though the Sexual Assault Center is housed at MSU, the majority of its funding comes from a grant through the Victims of Crime Act, and it also does some of its own fundraising. We’ve been fortunate to have continued funding through the Federal Crime Victim Fund, but it isn’t enough.

MSU needs to provide more funding to the Sexual Assault Program to help it care for the mental and emotional well-being of MSU’s own students.

Counseling is an important part of the longterm work of healing from trauma. It’s a recommendation I make, as a volunteer, to every survivor I meet.

And it’s a service the Sexual Assault Program doesn’t have the resources to properly provide. Too many MSU students need counseling services and the university doesn’t provide for enough staff to meet that need, creating a wait list to get an appointment.

When I’m on-call, I know that survivors might have to wait up to four weeks to see a counselor. The effects of trauma don’t wait until a mental health professional is lined up, and the longer a survivor has to wait, the more potential there is for harm.

National statistics suggest that, as a conservative estimate, there are 5,000 survivors of sexual assault at MSU. Supporting these survivors should be a priority, and having enough counselors is an important part of that support.

Dorm invasions Multiple dorm invasions and thefts occurred in Holden Hall on the night of Nov. 13, including one that ended in three laptops and an iPhone being stolen.

The first invasion occurred on Thursday between 1 and 5 a.m. in East Holden. Four female roommates were sleeping when they awoke to their laptops and an iPhone being stolen from the room. The females could not remember if their doors were locked or closed before they went to bed. Items stolen were estimated to exceed $4,000 in value.

A second invasion occurred around 4 a.m. in West Holden, when a female student was sleeping and awoke to a person standing in her bedroom. The suspect fled the room after being discovered.

The third and final reported invasion occurred around 6 a.m. in West Holden, when a female student was woken by two males entering her room. The suspects were described as two black males, both with short black hair. Nothing was stolen. After the students told a Resident Assistant, the incident was reported to the police, who are still investigating.

Stolen wallet A 21-year-old male student reported his wallet stolen on Nov. 11 while he was in the health clinic inside Brody Complex. The wallet and money inside were valued at $80.

Construction is underway for the newest addition to Chandler Crossings — The Rocks.

Chandler Crossings Regional Manager Adam Martin said the new apartment complex offers new amenities for students interested in living off campus.

“The Rocks is different to The Landings and The Village because these have hard wood floors and granite countertops, and the third floors have vaulted ceilings, so it’s a brandnew product,” Martin said.

The apartments are available in sizes from one to four bedrooms.

Martin, who called the new complex “more luxurious,” said these new apartments will

have more square footage than the established complexes in the area. The development reflects a a trend, both in East Lansing and nationally, toward higher-end student housing.

Martin said although the lease prices for the apartment complex range from $660 to $1,060 a month, he is not worried about demand. The one-bedroom and two-bedroom apartments are sold out, Martin said.

“We still provide you with the free CATA bus pass as well,” Martin said.

The construction of the eight-building apartment complex is being completed by Grand Rapids–based construction firm Wolverine Building Group.

“We are in charge of building the buildings from foundation to a finished unit. The owner is doing the side-work, landscaping and

appliances under their own control,” Wolverine Building Group Project Manager Jamerson Ries said.

Ries said the company started working on the project Oct. 22 and expects to finish by the end of July.

The new apartment project is located on Chandler Road past West Lake Lansing Road, just south from The Club, The Village and The Landings — all Chandler Crossings apartment complexes.

“We will open on Aug. 22, like everyone else — just like Chandler Crossings,” Martin said.

The Rocks will have three outdoor swimming pools, one heated indoor pool, sand volleyball courts, basketball courts and an indoor theater.

The cost of the project has not being disclosed yet, Martin said.

For most students, winter break means watching movies, hanging out with friends and simply enjoying time off from school. For osteopathic medicine sophomore Taylor White, however, it means volunteering.

She, along with eight other medical students, will be traveling to Florida to help with nature restoration at Everglades National Park.

She said some of the work might include fixing up the trails and removing invasive species.

“We may be picking up trash or painting park benches,” White said.

The class of 2017 had a fundraiser at Buffalo Wild Wings Monday where customers could request that 20 percent of their bill go toward funding the alternative winter break White has planned.

Tina Houghton, a program adviser in MSU’s Center for Ser vice Learning and Civic Engagement, is in charge of various alternative break trips. Though she’s planning a different trip than White, she agrees students should become involved with service trips.

“I truly believe that it is a life-changing experience for many students,” Houghton said, adding she’s seen students change their majors as

a result of attending an alternative break.

She also said she thinks it’s a great opportunity for students to learn more about themselves, open their eyes to different experiences and make an impact on society.

T he a lte r n at ive w i nte r break Houghton has planned includes stops in Kansas City and New Orleans, where she and her group will help to combat social problems such as hunger and homelessness, kids and education and HIV and AIDS. The trip to Florida won’t be White’s first. Last year, she and 22 other medical students went to Puerto Rico to work in a hospice area run by the Catholic Church.

“We did some water testing, partnering with some high schools nearby,” she said.

White said the goal of the trip was to raise awareness of the low water sanitation standards among the poor in Puerto Rico.

The trip was a success, serving as the inspiration for the upcoming alternative break.

White said service trips are a great way to travel and help out other people.

“I think it ’s a really fun opportunity to get to know your classmates better,” White said.

She added t hat t here’s enough time during alternative breaks to enjoy the destination you’ve traveled to.

Students at MSU come from different backgrounds and different financial standings.

Civil engineering senior Khaled Alghafli is from Al Ain, United Arab Emirates, which is near Dubai.

Alghafli said he would categorize himself as an average spender.

“At the beginning of the month, since I have money and get my salary, I spend a lot of money,” Alghafli said. “At the end, I’m like, ‘Oh, I should save that money.’”

Alghafli said he doesn’t go grocery shopping a lot because like most college students, he can’t find the time to.

“For lunch and dinner, I usually eat out,” he said.

A lghaf li said he doesn’t drink alcohol, so not much of his money is spent on nights out, beyond a cover fee once in a while.

One thing Alghafli said he

does is drive a lot.

“I bike in the summer and the first months of the fall, but now, no,” Alghafli said. “I’m not used to the weather.”

He said he saves some cash by parking in the lot near the International Center and like many other students, parks his car in the morning and takes advantage of the gate opening later at night.

“So I can leave my car there, study at the engineering building, which is across the street, and I can be done with everything at 9:30 p.m.,” Alghafli said.

As an international student, Alghafli said he only has a student visa and not a work visa, which restricts him from working off campus.

But the United Arab Emirates’ government, Alghaf li said, pays for his school tuition and insurance and provides him with a monthly salary.

“I have a full-ride scholarship, so I don’t need to really work,” he said. “They give

me a salary, a monthly salary, with the scholarship.”

A lghaf li said the salar y helps out with the fact that he doesn’t have a work visa.

Alghafli said the government gives him a ticket to travel home once a year, and if he had a family, his government would pay for his children and wife to live in the United States and increase his salary.

“The salary depends on the scholarship too,” Alghafli said.

“Some scholarship salaries may not be high enough, so they have to be careful where they spend the money and try to save money, cook at the apartment and look for a good place to stay.”

Alghafli said like him, other students from countries such as Qatar and Saudi Arabia also have government-funded scholarships.

The scholarships require students to maintain a certain level of academic standing.

“You have to have at least a 2.5 or 3.0 each semester, depending on the scholar-

ship,” Alghafli said. “The number of people that want to go study overseas increased right now, so they have higher requirements.”

But Alghafli said as an international student, some everyday tasks can be difficult.

Making payments to the Board of Water and Light is among them, Alghafli said.

“BW L says you need a social security number to pay online,” Alghafli said. “So you would have to drive all the way there to pay each month, or you would have to submit an automatic payment.”

Alghafli said he chooses to go there to make an in-person payment.

“I mean, I don’t know when they are going to take the money because it’s automatic,” he said. “I may need the money and I have to make sure there’s enough in there.”

Although Alghafli said he is fortunate, he still has some of the same worries about payments and parking as other college students.

Every two seconds, someone in America needs blood. According to the American Red Cross, that means more than 41,000 blood donations are needed every day.

In 1994, MSU and Pennsylvania State University began a friendly blood drive competition aiming to collect as many donations as possible.

Twenty years later, the competition continues. On Monday, MSU was in the lead with 888 units over PSU’s 648.

The MSU-PSU Blood Donor Challenge is coordinated in part by the MSU Red Cross Club, a student organization that helps with campus blood drives, donations for the Red Cross and community service in the East Lansing area.

The challenge has collected more than 72,000 blood donations since it began twenty years ago. That potentially saved more than 200,000 hospital patients dependent on blood transfusions for survival.

Penn State currently leads the blood donor challenge series 13-7, but MSU is going for its second win in a row.

Human biology senior and President of the MSURCC Brianne Feldpausch said the challenge is a good way to inspire students, faculty and staff to save lives with their donations.

“We like to have the competitive edge — it’s always a little more fun if you throw in a little competition,” Feldpausch said.

She said the student population is a great source for the Red Cross because students are more willing to learn about the necessity of blood donations.

“It’s really important to raise awareness to get people to donate, hopefully more than once,” Feldpausch said.

Neuroscience junior and secretary of the MSURCC Nicole Lewis said students should be informed about blood donations because by taking just a short amount of time to donate, three lives can be saved.

“I love helping people and I think this is a great way to help out even if you don’t know someone who is sick,” Lewis said.

She said the competition helps to bring the community together to volunteer by organizing and donating at blood drives.

Criminal justice junior and member of the MSU ACJA Aaron Schroeder said putting MSU and Penn State head to head gives students an incentive to collect as much blood as possible in the spirit of competition.

“There are more lives lost that could have been saved every year if they had the proper amount of blood that they need for emergency transfusions,” Schroeder said.

He said the MSU ACJA got involved because criminal justice is a very social field, and one of their core principles is community service.

“I don’t think students realize how much of an impact they can have by making donations and spreading the word,” Schroeder said.

More than a year has passed since nearly 1,100 workers at the Rana Plaza building in Bangladesh were buried and crushed to death beneath its eight stories.

Five factories, all of which were sweatshops that produced garments for multiple U.S. retailers, had been housed in the building, primarily employing young women and “child helpers.”

Most of the victims in the April 24, 2013, tragedy — about 80 percent of them — were women between the ages of 18 and 20, the age of the young students seen walking around MSU’s camTuesday, Novembe r 1 8 , 2 01 4

Today, sweatshops are still a major problem in Bangladesh and other countries. But the horror of what happened at Rana Plaza sparked a demand for change and acted as a catalyst for MSU students to fight for the rights of the workers in Bangladesh.

A national campaign for the Accord on Fire and Building Safety in Bangladesh was proposed soon after the Rana Plaza incident. The Accord was written to hold brands with factories in Bangladesh legally responsible for the safety and well-being of their employees. With a push from MSU’s chapter of United Students Against Sweatshops, MSU agreed to cut licensing agreements

with any company that refused to sign the Accord.

However, JanSport, the sole licensee that refused to sign the Accord, is still tied to MSU. The Accord on Fire and Building Safety in Bangladesh Many of the different Bangladesh factory employees are young women between the ages of 15 and 25. Each worker makes and is expected to live off of $68 per month. However, a year ago that number was $38 per month.

The MSU chapter of United Students Against Sweatshops brought the national campaign “End Death Traps” to campus last year. USAS includes chapters from around the country who all par-

take in the same goal of fighting for workers’ rights around the globe.

Several universities nationwide also participated in the campaign, which was meant to push the different schools to prompt their licensees to sign the Accord.

Global studies in the arts and humanities junior Kaitlin Lenhard said an open communication with the university was initially difficult to maintain, but, at this point, communication has improved.

After about a year of the organization’s meetings, protests and letters to university officials, they received a copy of a letter that MSU officials sent to their licensees.

The letter stated that, as of June 1, 2014, all licensees that produced MSU apparel would need to sign the Accord. If they refused, the license would be terminated.

“We were really excited when MSU made the decision,” said international relations and economics junior Megan Haugh.

Haugh is the regional organizer for USAS, and was one of the students who started MSU’s chapter about a year ago with the “End Death Traps”campaign.

“It’s a big deal, but it was also somewhat disappointing that it took them so long,” Haugh said.

“I think when other big universities made the decision it put pressure on them.”

Percussion ensemble creates music with handmade or unique instruments Percussionists utilize their instruments to create original sounds, “can have as much compositional process as the composer”

One MSU percussion group takes their creativity beyond just making the music.

Finishing his master’s degree of ethnomusicology, MSU student Alex Smith is one of the composers within the percussion studio that has done his own experimentation with music by launching a project of hand-crafted, sustainable instruments.

While the percussion ensemble is not a fixed group on campus, all of the students that study within the percussion program at MSU gather to collaborate on assigned pieces of music for various performances and events throughout the year.

Based on the instructions from the composers and the sounds that each group is trying to achieve, music performance graduate student Kelsey Tamayo said the percussionists often have the freedom to create their own unique sound by utilizing the mallets and equipment of their choice. In many instances, Tamayo said the ensembles have essentially found their own instruments by implementing unusual objects such as garbage cans

or metal pipes to convey the music.

Smith said he hopes crafting percussion equipment that is made from environmentally considerate materials is an essential part of what he offers to the percussion community. He believes that everyone should understand the production process, including the pre-exisiting life that was used to make the instrument and the consequences it has on the environment.

Smith currently performs on these sustainable instruments at various events with five other students who call themselves the Los Banditos.

Their equipment includes two marimbas made from glass instead of wood, two small mallet instr uments made from copper pipe and a North American wood respectively, as well as a cajon box drum and a “Michigandered” marimba made from Michigan sassafras.

“It’s more than just this thing in my living room or in our percussion studio. It’s an object with agency. If it has so much power, I feel like it is our obligation as a percussion community to know about that instrument,” he said.

“I think they have created an outstanding program that essentially prepares the students here to go out into the percussion community with the ability to be successful,”

Smith said. “It has done things for me not only from a community and family level, but from an artistic and professional level as well.”

Colorful silks, bright outfits and sweaty, smiling faces filled 134 Brody Hall as dancers swayed their hips to fast-paced Indian folk music.

Indian culture came alive on campus Friday night, when the Coalition of Indian Undergraduate Students put on Garbhangra, which human biology junior Manasa Gummalla said fused two styles of dance, garba and bhangra.

“Garba is more like a classic dance in the northern (part) of India and bhangra is also from the northern part of India but it’s more of ... an (energetic) type of dance,” Gummalla said.

This school year marks the 25th anniversary of Coalition of Indian Undergraduate Students, an

“A lot of composers like writing new music for percussionists mostly because we are game to do anything,” she said.

As a teaching assistant and a third-year member in the MSU Percussion Ensemble, Tamayo

“We really love it when there are people that may not have a ... background in India who come out and participate in celebrations like (this),” Ganesh said.

“The Indian culture is built on a lot of music and dance and performance and arts like that, so it’s a very big part of everyone’s culture,” she said.

Ganesh said the goals of the night were to give back to CIUS members,

“It ’s great because the show allows people from every ethnicity, from any level of dance experience, to join,” Chhaya said.

“And actually, all of our money that we make in that show goes to charities ... we make a lot of money for a good cause.”

Four takeaways from MSU’s 37-15 win over Maryland on Saturday

No. 10 MSU got a much-needed bounce back victory Saturday, topping the Maryland Terrapins, 37-15, from Capital One Field at Byrd Stadium. The Spartans used a stifling defensive performance and powerful rushing attack to bulldoze to another road conference win.

Here are four takeaways from this past weekend’s matchup between MSU and Maryland.

Defense Bounces Back After one of the worst showings in the head coach Mark Dantonio era, MSU’s defense returned to its normal dominance Saturday to hold Maryland to only 252 total yards.

That included only six yards on the ground for the Terrapins.

On top of keeping Maryland from moving the ball, MSU forced four turnovers, including a defensive touchdown on an interception by junior strong safety RJ Williamson.

Saturday’s performance was the one MSU’s defense needed and helped regain some confidence after the previous lackluster showing against the Buckeyes.

Run Game Carries Offense MSU continued its traditional “pound-green-pound” motto on Saturday, compiling 242 yards

on the ground.

Senior running back Jeremy Langford extended his 100-plus yards streak to 14 straight games against Big Ten opponents, finishing the evening with 138 yards and two touchdowns. The depth of MSU’s backfield also provided a boost, with senior Nick Hill racking up 58 yards on six carries and sophomore Delton Williams recording 34 yards on six carries.

“On the offensive side of the ball, (we) ran the ball very effectively, especially in the second half,” Dantonio said during his Sunday night teleconference.

“Sort of took over the game in the second half, but especially in the fourth quarter with two scores, two big runs.”

Slowing Down Lippett It appears teams are starting to find a way to slow down senior wide receiver Tony Lippett.

After breaking onto the scene like gangbusters, Lippett has been held to only nine receptions for 110 yards and no touchdowns over the past two weeks. Even the week before that against Michigan he was held to only three receptions.

Earlier in the season Lippett said he started to notice more double team coverage, and it’s apparently starting to have an effect. Lippett still has put up incredible numbers — now only one yard shy of the 1,000 yard mark — but some other guys will need to come on in the final two

No. 19 MSU (1-0 overall) faces off against No. 4 Duke (2-0 overall), who will dress nine McDonald’s All-Americans compared to MSU’s one Branden Dawson Tuesday night in Indianapolis, Indiana.

“I’ve been an underdog so many times in my career — that doesn’t faze me,” head coach Tom Izzo said. “I guess I’m worried if it fazes the guys.”

The Blue Devils, led by Mike Krzyzewski for the 40th straight season, will provide a stiff challenge for MSU, who narrowly defeated Navy (0-2 overall), 64-59 Friday night.

“I’m looking at this as our chance to take another step forward in a long season,” Izzo said. “It’s a great way to start off college basketball.”

Duke comes into the game undefeated, with their wins coming against Presbyterian and Fair-

field by an average of 59.5 points.

MSU, on the other hand, struggled at times Friday against Navy, who finished last in the Patriot League last season.

“It adds more motivation kind of being the lower ranked team coming in,” senior guard and team co-captain Travis Trice said.

Trice enjoyed a career game to open the season, posting a career-high 25 points against the Midshipmen. He also scored 17 of the team’s 28 points in the second half, while adding five rebounds and five assists.

The Spartans will rely on the experience of facing and defeating Kentucky, 78-74, in last year’s Champions Classic.

“We didn’t try to do anything out of the ordinary,” senior forward Branden Dawson said about the game last year. “We followed coach’s game plan.”

Dawson will be a huge part of Izzo’s game plan Tuesday. “(Izzo) wants me to be Superman in this game,”

Nairn did not score against the Midshipmen but did have four assists, three rebounds and only one turnover in 20 minutes of action.

“We’re really happy with how (Nairn) played,” Trice said. “He didn’t make that many mistakes.

It was a good showing for him.”

When you hear the words “music” and “math,” you may not think there’s much correlation between these seemingly contrasting subjects.

Jason Brown, however, would beg to differ.

Brown, a mathematics professor at Dalhousie University in Nova Scotia, will be giving a lecture at 4:10 p.m. today in C304 Wells Hall, titled “A Hard Day’s Math: The Connections Between Mathematics and Music.”

The lecture’s title, inspired by the legendary opening chord of the Beatles’ 1964 hit song “A Hard Day’s Night,” stems from a sudden realization Brown had while thinking about the song in 2004, on the song’s 40th anniversary.

Brown said the opening chord of the song was something people had tried to play for years, but never “quite got it right.”

“Everyone had their own idea of what the notes were and I thought back then, ‘Maybe there’s a scientific way to approach it,’” Brown said.

Brown, who taught himself to play guitar at the age of 12 by learning the songs on Beatles records, said when thinking about the song, he

remembered a chapter in an undergrad book he had read on the sounds of mathematics.

He has since used something called a Fourier transform, which is a part of calculus, to “unravel that mysterious open chord.”

Brown has written a number of papers on the connection between mathematics and music.

“I think on one level you can use mathematics to understand the physics behind sound in music and to see the frequencies of the notes that are played in chords. On the other hand, I’ve also written about how mathematical patterns infuse the best song writing,” he said.

“In particular, what is amazing is the level to which songs of the Beatles incorporate patterns in their music, the kind of patterns that people will want to listen to over and over again throughout the years, and I think that’s part of their legacy.”

Brown said none of the Beatles were particularly good at mathematics throughout their scholastic careers, but this mathematical ability is displayed through the music more on a subconscious level.

“You don’t have to be good at school mathematics to have an inherent mathematical sensibility,” Brown said.
