Walking home alone at night after a few drinks is never a good idea, man or woman. People who want to hurt you usually don’t care if you are a man or a woman — drunk is drunk.

That being said, through a series of events I was walking home alone on Albert Avenue earlier this semester after a night at the bar.

While walking I saw a girl ahead of me, also walking home alone. She was about a block ahead of me in a dimly lit part of town.

Of course, I didn’t think much of it. It’s a big campus and I see a lot of people walking to and from a lot of places. But what happened next did surprise me.

The girl looked behind her, saw me and ran as fast as she could away from me.

I didn’t get it. I’m a nice guy. I wouldn’t hurt a fly. I was raised by strong women and have never felt the urge to harm anyone, man or woman.

Shockingly, that girl didn’t exactly have time to ask for a contextual back story. She saw a drunk guy, who was a little on the big side, walking towards her and didn’t want to take the chance that I might do something to cause her harm.

She had every right to run away. She probably should have run away. And if you are a man reading this and you don’t think sexual assault is an issue for men to be as passionate about as women, that is the reason you are wrong.

In the world we live in men are assumed guilty until proven innocent, and with good reason. It’s through a series of cultural mistakes that go back longer than any of us have been alive, and it’s a fact that we have to deal with.

How about we change that culture? Sounds good, right?

If you don’t want to be classified as someone who would commit one of the more unspeakable crimes a human can commit, then start the change yourself. Right now the movement against sexual violence has a lot of momentum, but establishing a solid base of male support would give the movement even more strength.

Men need to be as upfront as women in leading a culture shift. I understand it isn’t just women who are survivors of sexual assault, but I’m here to talk about the statistical majority.

The culture will not change until the gender who has caused most of the problems orchestrate the change.

Because until we do that, it’ll be assumed that I am a rapist or dangerous because girls aren’t going to find the time to stop and ask for a contextual back story from me when walking home in the middle of the night anytime soon.

And frankly, the act of people running away from me got incredibly old, incredibly fast.

ELPD cars and officers were monitoring the event to make sure protesters stayed on the sidewalks and cause no property damaged.

When they arrived, they demanded Chief of Police Juli Liebler come and listen to their demands but were told that she had gone home for the night and would return at 8 a.m. The protesters held a four and a half minute silent reflection on police violence, symbolizing the four and a half hours Michael Brown lay dead in the streets of Ferguson, Missouri.

“There a lot of people who feel afraid of the police due to their race,” said a protester who asked not to be named. “So we are going to keep rallying until they acknowledge the injustice of the system.”

Afterwards, some members disbanded and others stayed out front to attract passersby and encourage them to join in the protest.

The group will return at a later date to speak with Liebler and demand that ELPD make a statement condemning the actions of the Ferguson Police Department.

In their response, the ELPD remained neutral toward the protests in Missouri, explaining the department “has not been presented with all the facts regarding police use of force in Ferguson, Missouri. It is, therefore, not prudent to critique or judge their actions.”

MSU ice cream and cookies recalled after metal shavings contamination Several cookie and ice cream products made by MSU were recalled last week because of a possible metal shavings contamination, MSU spokesman Jason Cody said.

On Thursday, a university employee discovered a malfunctioning machine in the food production process.

The recalled products are as follows: MSU Bakers’ Decorated Sugar Cookies, Udder Delight’s Swiss Chocolate Chip Ice Cream Cookie Sandwich and Udder Delight’s Classic Chocolate Chip Ice Cream Cookie Sandwich. MSU Bakers’ cookies and Udder Delight’s ice cream sandwiches are sold at multiple campus retailers, including Sparty’s.

While no illnesses were reported from the recalled products, production was immediately halted and the affected products pulled from shelves.

MSU notified the Michigan Department of Agriculture, which began an inspection as well.

Production will continue after an inspection has been completed and the malfunctioning equipment has been replaced.

“Have you ever been told you can’t do something?” was the question speaker Paul Artale posed to an auditorium full of graduate students. Artale was one of two keynote speakers at Saturday’s Graduate Student Leadership Institute.

The event was put on by Graduate Student Life and Wellness, the Council of Graduate Students and Ph.D. Career Services and lasted almost eight hours, starting at 8 a.m. in Brody Hall’s Engagement Center. The institute was designed to teach leadership and resilience, skills that organizers said are sometimes lacking in graduate students.

The working definition of resiliency was “the ability to effectively adapt and sustain during career and life transitions,” according to the event program.

Starting with a short introduction, the two keynote speakers went on.

First Lisa Laughman, who is a counselor in the MSU Employee Assistance Program and spoke about emotional wellness. The point of her presentation was “to share with you the emotional wellness skills that are essential to effective leadership.”

Paul Artale, a Michigan-based keynote speaker, then walked into the auditorium, quickly addressing the elephant in the room. Due to a birth defect, his arms are stunted and he has fewer fingers than normal.

He talked about some important things in his life, like playing football despite his condition and how he

learned to ask for help.

“When you look like me, you think you have to be (Superman)”, he said.

He then posed three questions to the audience for each graduate student to ask themselves before moving forward in life. The questions dealt with being prepared for conflict, to have a vision of the future and to address who would help get one to their goals.

He wanted to stress that each student should have an aim for where they were going and to make decisions based off the image of what they want their lives to look like, and later tied that into the overarching theme of resiliency.

“If you don’t know where you’re going, you don’t know what you have to be resilient to,” he said.

This was followed by a question and answer session, then by several more workshop-like activities including breakout sessions covering a number of topics and a review of the StrengthsFinder assessment.

Last in the day was a student leader panel, with four graduate students at MSU who were asked questions by the quickly-dwindling audience of what being a leader meant. They also stressed for the graduate students to try and make connections in their fields at their time of graduation.

“A good leader has to also be a good follower,” said Ashlee Barnes, who sits on the Steering Committee for the Alliance of Graduate Education and the Professoriate and was on the panel. “Before you can lead something you have to understand it.”

Students blog for their passions and for profit

Marketing sophomore Chris Ryan said he has been an avid video blogger on YouTube since his middle school years, when he was just beginning to learn about the Internet and social media.

“I was just looking for more ways to express myself online,” Ryan said. “I thought this was my way to become a celebrity in seventh grade.”

Ryan said video blogging, known as vlogging, and social media marketing became more than a hobby as his content improved and his following grew — it became a career.

“I grew up doing it, I learned young … I’m ahead of the curve,” said Ryan, who landed a teaching assistant position as well as several local freelance branding campaigns with his self-taught experience.

Ryan said he learned how to profit from his vlog by using Google AdSense and forming relationships with his businesses sponsors.

“I have been making money off of YouTube and web shows since I was 14,” Ryan said.

He receives paychecks from Google and goodies like headphones, shirts and albums.

Ryan said he is grateful his hobby turned into something he can do to pay tuition and pursue as a career because he enjoys doing it.

For some students, blogging is about securing a sense of identity.

Interdisciplinary studies in social science junior Imaan Abbasi said both she and her roommate identify as Muslims and as feminists, and they began their blog after realizing young Muslim American women were not included in conversations regarding Muslim women in media.

“This blog was a way to take back our voices,”

Abbasi said. “This blog is to show the different dimensions of Muslim women in a world that paints them as unidimensional.”

To other students, such as professional writing and theatre junior Kendall Kotcher, a blog is a creative outlet. Kotcher said the creative freedom of blogging and vlogging continuously draws her to create content.

“Ninety-nine percent of why I blog and vlog is for myself and for expression,” Kotcher said. “It’s a plus with technology that I get to share it with others.”

With social media leading online activity, blogs are often overlooked as a source of buzz. However, blogging numbers continue to grow.

According to a 2010 study conducted by publisher advertising platform Technorati, a new blog is created every 7.4 seconds and 10,800 updates are posted every hour.

But maintaining a blog can be time consuming, especially with a student’s schedule.

“I don’t think either of us realized how much time it takes to run a blog,” Abbasi said of herself and her roommate. “Ideally, we want to have posts at least once a week, but with juggling everything else it gets very difficult.”

In the tornado of assignments, credit hours, social time and crammed planners, blogging and vlogging can make college life a bit more tolerable.

Abbasi said blogging “has been a really cathartic avenue” for her and her roommate.

Kotcher said although she doesn’t have time to blog as much as she would like, if she finds her mind racing at night, typing out her thoughts or worries helps her move past them.

“It makes life interesting and fun,” Kotcher said.

“Blogging is a good coping mechanism … (blogs) keep me sane, they’re mediums of expression, they’re fun and they document my life.”

For MSU football seniors, just one game remains at Spartan Stadium Four of MSU football’s strongest seniors reflect on their careers as Spartans, what it’s like to be coached by Mark Dantonio and how they’ve contributed to the Spartan football program

With the final whistle Saturday in College Park, Maryland, it was officially time for MSU’s seniors to focus on one final game at Spartan Stadium.

This week’s matchup on Saturday will mark the final home game of the season, and for 17 seniors, their final time playing in front of a home Spartan crowd. For four particular Spartans, this game will serve as one of the final chapters in prestigious careers that saw a Big Ten and Rose Bowl championship.

14 Career 100-yard rushing games for running back Jeremy Langford

At the start of the 2013 season, no one could have predicted the production MSU would get out of Jeremy Langford.

With the loss of almost-1,800 yard rusher Le’Veon Bell, there was a wide hole the Spartans had to fill in the backfield. Entering camp, Langford wasn’t even listed as the starter with now-sophomore outside linebacker Riley Bullough leading the way in the position battle.

However, since then everything has changed and now Langford has built up a resume that puts him among some of the best running backs in Spartan history. Langford rushed for 1,422 yards and 18 touchdowns in 2013, and again this season he surpassed the 1,000 yard mark with at least three more games to go.

Even more impressive is Langford’s consistency. The Wayne, Michigan, native has rushed for more than 100 yards in 14 consecutive games against Big Ten opponents and has earned the term of workhorse from the coaching staff.

“Jeremy (runs) the ball as a workhorse and is a very, very good football player,” head coach Mark Dantonio said. “He has got some power and is a solid 205 (pounds) that can break a big one. He is a senior, so he has all of those things working for him.”

A lot of Langford’s success can be credited to his hardworking mentality that Dantonio helped develop throughout his time at MSU. At the beginning of the season, Langford said he had numerous personal conversations with Dantonio. Dantonio’s trust in Langford helped groom him into the premier back he’s become.

“It’s difficult to really imagine. He never gave up on me, and he gave me a chance,” Langford said. “When I was getting switched from (defensive back) to receiver and not being able to be comfortable but he still had trust in me that I could play somewhere. He just gave me the chance and opportunity and it took me time to mature to realize that.”

A kid from New Albany, Ohio, isn’t supposed to go to the state of Michigan to play football. Travis Jackson broke that trend when he decided to become a Spartan.

“Being a part of this family has been really special,” he said. “This has been an awesome time, I’ll be forever in debt to Michigan State.”

Jackson has been on the offensive line for five years. In his time he has blocked for NFL players, such as Le’Veon Bell and Kirk Cousins, won a Big Ten championship and a Rose Bowl and definitely grew as a person, he said.

“I’ve definitely grown way more as a person,” he said. “Football is a great game. It’s game that we love so much, but becoming the person you become is so important.”

Jackson has played with a cast of talented offensive linemen and said it feels odd to be considered the old guy on the line.

“It’s a surreal feeling,” he said. “It’s one of those tough transitions where you’re trying to enjoy every second with the guys. You try to enjoy it all because once the bowl game ends it cuts right off.”

Jackson has been one of the leaders of an offensive line that has only allowed eight sacks this season, which is fourth in the country. The offensive line has also blocked for Jeremy Langford, who has accumulated 1,116 yards and 15 touchdowns this season.

“Where the program was when our class came here to where it is now, being a part of that has been really special,” he said. “Being a part of a coach (Dantonio) football team was really cool for five years.”

131 Career catches for wide receiver Tony Lippett

Mark Dantonio loves players with a chip on their shoulder. There are few that have come through the program with more to prove than wide receiver Tony Lippett.

The Detroit native had a rough time at first in East Lansing, as drops and inconsistency forced him to play for a short time as a defensive back.

He’s back at wide receiver, and he might be the best in the Big Ten. “Being a Spartan has been a grind. There’s been a lot of ups and downs,” he said. “It’s a family — we’re all built on certain traits, and we trust each other.”

Lippett came into this season confident after reeling in touchdowns in the Big Ten championship game and the Rose Bowl. He has been able to shine by catching 55 passes for 999 yards and nine touchdowns this season.

Lippett said playing defense wasn’t his first choice, but he learned from his time on the other side of the ball.

“I was young, and coach D was trying to get me out on the field,” he said. “I just tried to embrace it and embrace learning the position. I tried to have fun and stay lose.”

Lippett admitted that he hasn’t had much time to reflect on graduating, but said every once and while he tries to soak in the moment.

“I’ve probably stepped back a little bit, but not too much,”he said. “I’m just trying to grind day in and day out to get a win every Saturday.”

After an appearance on the Biletnikoff Award watch list as the nation’s best receiver, Lippett said this season has been more gratifying considering his success and what he has gone through at MSU. “It’s been a good season so far,” he said. “The struggles that I’ve faced have been okay. They’re just obstacles that you have in life, and it’s basically how you respond to them that make you a man.”

Lippett said the challenges he has faced and will face in life will be dealt with the same way he dealt with challenges at MSU. Face to face.

It’s never easy when you have to make a position change late in your career. It only gets harder when that position change means you’re replacing a legend like former Spartan Max Bullough.

That was the task senior middle linebacker Taiwan Jones was faced with this season. After starting a majority of the previous two seasons at outside linebacker, Jones moved to the middle and became the quarterback of the defense. And he’s done so in flying colors.

Jones is tied for second on the team in tackles, recording 47 through 10 games this season. Even more impressive is his 10.5 tackles for a loss this year, which is already a career high for a season.

Dantonio and the coaching staff have noticed Jones’ progression throughout the season, noting earlier this year against Nebraska as one of his best showings in his career.

Outside of Jones’ production on the field, he has blossomed into a leader on the defense through his will to take on any challenge. At the beginning of the season Jones said he wanted to benefit the team through stepping out of his comfort zone and making the shift to the middle because he wanted the responsibility of making sure everyone was in place at all times.

“I like being in the middle, I like being able to call the show, getting everyone lined up (and) having everyone have faith in me to get everyone lined up,” Jones said. “I take everything as a challenge (and) I took that as one of my biggest challenges — me not to make a mistake and mess everyone else up by being in the wrong place to make plays.”

To media and information freshman Rellikson Kisyula, being African is not about skin color, it’s about the appreciation of and interest in African culture.

“You don’t have to be black to be African, as long as you like African culture,” Kisyula said.

The Kenya native was one of the protagonists of a play organized by the African Students Union during the group’s annual gala Saturday night.

The gala was one of the events marking this year’s Africa Week.

Union Vice President Florence Otaigbe said the idea behind Africa Week is to bring different African organizations together creating “a

united front of African communities.”

“It’s a way to engage the campus community,” Otaigbe said, adding that MSU has a lot to offer in regards to African culture.

The play that highlighted the theme of this year’s gala was about a couple from different African backgrounds. The character that Kisyula played does not like that his girlfriend was holding on to her African traditions, so he leaves her.

She goes on to marry the character’s friend who is more appreciative of her traditions and culture. “(The play) ultimately ends in a wedding, which symbolizes the unity of Africa,” she said. “We’re all different, but we can still come together.”

Professor of international relations and African affairs and Director of the African American and African Studies in the College of Arts and Letters Rita Kiki Edozie said Africa Week returned this year after a hiatus of about six years.

She said having such a week is important to provide a means for people to better understand Africa and set aside the common stigmas that are associated with the continent, like what recently happened with the rise of Ebola.

One of the organizations the student union teamed up with is the African Student Leadership Association, a newly formed student group that discusses political, economic and security issues connected to Africa.

ASLA President Cheick Oumar Tangara said the group focuses on addressing political issues that aren’t commonly brought up on campus, especially raising awareness among African youth in terms of what they can do to improve Africa.

Tangara said through the myriad of events offered during Africa Week, there’s a place for everyone to learn about Africa, whether it’s about the politics, culture or economics of the continent.

“Everybody can have something,” Tangara said.

“Africa is the one thing that brings us together.”

After leaving behind a college community and adjusting to a new lifestyle out on the job market, many recent college graduates find it overwhelming to re-establish the social life of their undergraduate glory days.

For recent MSU alumnus Cody Wilson, however, this notorious transition has become an outlet for making new connections and finding balance in his life.

After recognizing that many of his close friends would be moving away from East Lansing to pursue their new careers, Wilson joined the Greater Lansing Sport and Social Club a few months before his graduation. There he was able to make new friends with students in his area, rather than from his college.

With the intent of creating a social atmosphere for young professionals in the Lansing area, the GLSSC organizes co-ed teams that meet once per week to compete against each other in a large amount of different sports before heading to the bars.

“It’s a fantastic opportunity to get away from the hustle and bustle of work and just blow off some steam,” Wilson said. “Even though you’re on different teams, everyone is so connected and it just turns into one giant GLSSC team once we get to the bar and everyone starts mingling.”

The club offers two leagues each season where members can choose between dodgeball, flag foot-

ball, kickball, beach volleyball, indoor volleyball and bowling, depending on the time of year. While most individuals focus on the social aspect of the club, Wilson said this does not take away from the competition.

According to GLSSC Director Josh Sherry, the club uses this competitive nature to encourage participants to socialize with members from other teams. In the dodgeball league, for example, any man who hits a female player in the head with the ball is expected to buy her a pitcher of beer following the game.

“It opens up conversation and makes it more fun,” Sherry said. “Not everyone is an extrovert, so if we can just break down that barrier, it makes it that much easier for people to build relationships.”

Since the club consists of individuals in their mid20s to early 30s, Sherry said the games are purposely set at later times during the week in order to accommodate the majority of participants who work a typical 9 to 5 job.

As most of the members are Lansing residents who are well-established in their careers, Sherry said the GLSSC can also serve as a source of networking, specifically for the upperclassmen and graduate students from MSU who participate .

“We keep the young professional demographic together,” he said. “Whether participants become involved in GLSSC for the physical activity, the food and beer specials we run at the bar, the networking, or just to have something fun to break up their work week, we try to provide a fun concept that people see a value in.”

Hockey still looking to turn corner early in season

MSU football defeats Maryland in College Park, 37-15

No. 10 MSU (8-2 overall, 5-1 Big Ten) got knocked down against No. 7 Ohio State (9-1 overall, 6-0 Big Ten) when they lost 49-37 Nov. 8.

The question going into a game against Maryland (6-4 overall, 3-3 Big Ten) was: can MSU respond after being beaten?

They did, in a big way. With the help of senior running back Jeremy Langford and four turnovers, MSU welcomed Maryland to the Big Ten with a 37-15 win.

It was the first time MSU had played UMD since 1950 and the first time the Spartans went to College Park since 1944.

Langford got off to a slow start, but picked up momentum in the second half and was able to surpass 100 yards on the game once again. He finished with 25 carries and 135 yards to complement his two touchdowns.

The defense was able to respond after giving up 49 points and 568 yards of offense against Ohio State to only giving up 252 yards and 15 points to the Terrapins.

Junior quarterback Connor Cook didn’t have his best game, going only 14-31 for 240 yards.

He did not record a touchdown or interception.

The game was close in the second quarter, when graduate student quarterback C.J. Brown found junior wide receiver Daniel Adams for a 20-yard touchdown to make the score 9-7. After that MSU took the game over.

Langford found the end zone later in the quarter to make it 16-7, but it was the interception for the touchdown recorded by junior safety RJ Williamson to make it 23-7 that blew the game wide open. Both teams would add touchdowns but the pick six for Williamson solidified that the Spartans had arrived.

“I think it’s always the same challenge really,” Dantonio said before the game. “That’s why I think you have to coach everything, not just the Xs and Os. You have to coach everything. You have to coach attitude. You have to coach leadership. You have to coach sacrifice, everything.”

MSU’s next game will be against another Big Ten newcomer, Rutgers (6-4 overall, 2-4 Big Ten). The game will be at Spartan Stadium and has been announced as a noon kickoff.

The volleyball team (14-13 overall, 7-8 Big Ten) finally had a chance to do something they haven’t done in a while before Saturday night.

The win was the 750th in program history and snapped a three-game losing streak.

Saturday night’s victory was the second win for MSU against Indiana this season. The Spartans also took down the Hoosiers in the Big Ten season opener Sept. 26, 3-1 (25-17, 25-18, 22-25, 25-21).

MSU held Indiana to 34 points total, which broke the previous record for points allowed (35) in a game.

“I thought we had some really good practices leading up to today’s match,” George said.

If there was one set that epitomized the Spartans’ dominance against the Hoosiers, it was the second set.

The eight points MSU allowed in the second set was also a team record for fewest points allowed since the 25-point scoring system was established in 2009.

Sophomore outside hitter Chloe Reinig and sophomore middle blocker Allyssah Fitterer led the charge, combining for eight kills in the set.

Reinig finished the game with 14 kills and hit at a .500 clip. Fitterer had a .714 hitting percentage and 10 kills.

The third set was another MSU rout. With the exception of two ties and one lead change it was all Spartans, who needed just 71 minutes to defeat Indiana.

“We followed the game plan well and when we didn’t (the team) rebounded and got refocused immediately,” George said.

MSU will have a few days to enjoy the win before facing Northwestern (15-12 overall, 5-11 Big Ten) Wednesday night.

The Spartans swept the Wildcats in straight sets, 3-0 (25-17, 25-18, 25-16) on the first of the month at Jenison Field House.

Northwestern fell to No. 16 Purdue, 3-0 (25-21, 25-17, 25-17) Saturday night.

MSU played its first regular season game against Eastern Michigan on Sunday afternoon, and the Eagles put up quite a fight before the Spartans pulled away for a 69-61 win.

“I knew it was gonna be a game,” head coach Suzy Merchant said. “Every time we’ve played them, it’s been very close games. … People come at you when it’s a Superbowl situation.”

MSU got out to an energetic start en route to a 7-1 lead, as redshirt sophomore forward Aerial Powers nailed a three on MSU’s opening possession.

Eastern applied full-court pressure and picked up a few easy steals on the defensive end and had a momentum swing of its own. The Eagles took their first lead with 13 minutes remaining in the half, when sophomore guard Janay Morton drained a three to put EMU on top, 9-8.

The half went back and forth, as EMU’s press continued to cause problems for MSU. Merchant believes the struggles stemmed from the fact that the Spartans do not have a clear floor general at this point of the season.

“I knew we were gonna struggle with it,” Merchant said of the press. “We don’t have anybody right now that really wants that role in a commanding presence.”

MSU entered halftime leading 34-28, despite shooting just 28.6 percent on first half field goal attempts.

Powers dominated the first half, tallying 12 points and 10 rebounds for her second straight double-double. Like the rest of her team, Powers struggled making shots, going 3-10 from the field in the first half.

“We just couldn’t hit shots at first,” Powers said. “I think we were trying to shoot too much to begin with. Then we kind of settled down and got in our rhythm, and we were able to finally get the ball over court and get into our set plays.”

Eastern scored the first four points of the second half, but Powers answered for the Spartans with four points of her own.

gles, MSU sophomore guard Tori Jankoska made some big plays in the second half and helped MSU to its largest lead of the game, 54-40. Jankoska fed Mills in the post with a perfect pass over the top on one possession, and the next time down, Jankoska ran the floor and finished a contested layup.

Again though, the Eagles hung in the game with its full court pressure. Janay Morton picked off a Spartan pass with just 6:49 remaining, and converted the easy layup, trimming MSU’s lead to six.

EMU cut the deficit to four before senior guard Anna Morrissey drilled a pivotal three pointer from the corner. Just seconds later, she came up with a steal on defense to stop Eastern’s offensive momentum.

a great job of setting up plays and getting out players in good opportunities,” Morrissey said.

The Eagles kept it a game down the stretch, but when the final buzzer sounded, MSU won 69-61. Powers and Jankoska finished with 20 points each for the Spartans.

In the first game of the regular season, MSU faced adversity, but Merchant believes that it could be beneficial going forward.

“You’re playing teams that are well coached, and they might do it differently, but certainly it’s an opportunity for them to play their best,” Merchant said. “I’m glad we played Eastern Michigan. …

I like that they always come well prepared and with a lot of aggression. It helps us in the end.”
