In my hometown, it wasn’t uncommon to see a man with his eyebrows trimmed.

Since I live in Dearborn where the population is mostly of Arab descent, maybe it was due to cultural reasons. Even some of my Puerto Rican friends did it.

None of them were ashamed. Either they got their eyebrows waxed, plucked or simply lined up with some clippers while in the barbershop. Nothing is wrong with that. Maybe some people’s eyebrows were exceptionally more out of control than others.

Males may feel skeptical that they may come off as feminine. In the Puerto Rican culture, it is nothing out the ordinary for males to get their eyebrows done or

cleaned every two weeks. Also, when it comes to certain athletic activities, such as volleyball, males may shave their legs.

It can be considered a macho ideology.

Haircuts are enjoyable in my opinion. I like when a guy switches their style up.

In my culture, a guy getting a line up can change his entire presence – in a favorable way.

As humans, we must take care of ourselves. There’s nothing wrong with men getting pedicures. Many of my male friends do it. Maybe not as frequently as my mother and I would, but often enough to be presentable in flip flops.

For athletes, all the work they do can take a toll on their feet. Of course a man’s feet isn’t the first thing that catches a girl’s eye, but it should be equally preferred for men’s feet to look decent, since I always hear complaints from my male friends about how they wouldn’t date a girl if she didn’t always have her feet done.

Let’s talk about shaving. If men expect a woman to be bald on her legs, under her arms and in her pubic region, why are they allowed to look like a scruffy bear and have their own little forest in their pants?

Clearly I don’t prefer a man who shaves his armpits and legs, unless you need to for athletic or health reasons. I’m just saying if us women go through all this trouble, you can at least make an effort to tame some of your mane.

For guys, I know clipping their nails isn’t a top priority. But once it gets to the point where you have claws, some shortening needs to happen.

I understand men may not take their appearance as seriously as women, and it is common for males to make fun of their friends who try to. But in-grown hairs and nails are unhealthy and unhygienic for humans in general.

I’m not saying that all men should feel obligated to get pedicures or their eyebrows waxed, but they should be comfortable doing so even if society makes it seem taboo.

At the end of the day, it’s all about self-confidence and being comfortable in your own skin. Remember, real men wear pink.

First-time lobbyists get advice on presenting causes with conviction Students from MSU and other Michigan universities were coached by current legislative assistants as they lobbied for HB 5691, a bill intended to expand legal protections against discrimination and sexual harassment in the workplace to unpaid interns

Gathering in James Madison College early Wednesday morning, a group of roughly two dozen well-dressed, first-time lobbyists met for Michigan Equal Protections for Interns Coalition’s Capitol Day, organized by Mi-EPIC’s director, political theory and constitutional democracy senior Matt Marks.

Students from both MSU and other universities in Michigan, gathered by a furious media campaign from Marks, congregated on the third floor of Case Hall and were given a crash course in lobbying by four assistants of three different Michigan representatives. “Any students who are interested in government, political science or advocating” were welcome to attend, according to the event description.

They were attempting to lobby for HB 5691, introduced by Rep. David Knezek (D-Dearborn Heights) for the purpose of expanding legal protection against discrimination and sexual harassment to unpaid interns in the workplace.

Two Democratic representatives, who originally planned to attend the event but canceled due to last-minute commitments, each sent legislative assistants to the event. Mike Malone came in Knezek’s stead and Molly Korn and Ryan Sebolt came for Rep. Sam Singh (D-East Lansing). The odd man out on the panel was Eric Singer, a legislative assistant for Rep. Klint Kesto (R-Commerce Township).

The four speakers gave advice to the predominately new lobbyists, suggesting to avoid simply reading off their fact sheets or expect immediate gratification. One piece of advice to the lobbyists was to try and personalize the cause they are lobbying for.

“Having a student come in and lobby for something they care about; it’s a breath of fresh air,” Singer said.

Attendees were grouped in pairs and given a folder with a handful of representatives they were responsible for meeting with throughout the rest of the day.

Marks said he was driven to support HB 5691 by a trend in the United States where internships are increasingly prevalent for undergraduates and certain institutions even require an internship for graduation, such as James Madison College.

He said he was very happy with the turnout and, though the Capitol Day participants were mainly inexperienced, felt that they did well as a whole. He also said that because this issue is affecting more students, it is important that they care.

“Students should care about this because there is a very, very good chance that a student will be partaking in an internship and there is also a very good chance that that internship is unpaid,” Marks said. “So it is important that, as unpaid interns, they have basic workplace protection from sexual harassment and other discrimination.”

East Lansing government efforts to ensure a safe and equal environment to members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community have paid off.

According to the 2014 Human Rights Campaign’s Municipality Index Report, East Lansing scored a perfect score of 100 along with 29 other cities in the United States.

In a press release sent on Wednesday, East Lansing Mayor Nathan Triplett said the score shows what the East Lansing community values.

“Being welcoming to all residents and visitors reflects the core values of our university community. It’s part of who we are,” Triplett said in the press release.

This is the third year that the Human Rights Campaign, a progay civil rights organization, evaluated the different cities’ commitments toward the protection, implementation, and prevalence of equal rights for

the LGBT community.

The Human Rights Campaign rated cities in six different categories — non-discrimination laws, relationship recognition, municipal employment policies, inclusiveness of city services, law enforcement and municipal leadership on LGBT issues.

Social relations and policy junior Colin Wiebrecht said the report will pressure the state government to grant equal rights to the LGBT community.

“I think it’s great,” Wiebrecht said. “I think it shows that city, state and federal government are going to take action to make cities more inclusive and open to gay people.”

Although the city got a perfect score in the report, Wiebrecht said there is still discrimination among students.

“I think … it’s going to take time. A lot of it is educating people and breaking down stereotypes,” Wiebrecht said.

St. Louis, Los Angeles, Atlanta, St. Paul, Minnesota, Orlando, Florida and Iowa City, Iowa are among the other cities to score a

perfect score in the report.

President of the Human Rights Campaign Chad Griffin said in a statement the report shows that many cities are adopting progressive policies to ensure equality.

“In this country there is an ongoing race to the top to treat all people, including LGBT people, fairly under the law. It’s time our state and federal laws caught up,” Griffin said.

Other major cities in Michigan were ranked in the report.

Ann Arbor got a score of 83, Detroit of 74, and Lansing got a score of 64.

“It’s vitally important that local communities play a leading role in the fight for LGBT equality, especially in states like Michigan,” Triplett said. “We have worked hard to ensure that our city stands out as a model of LGBT inclusion.”

East Lansing became the first city in the United States to ban discrimination based on sexual orientation with the adoption of a non-discrimination ordinance in 1972.

Annual Herp Night puts snakes, alligators and lizards in students’ hands Members of the MSU Herpetology Club shared their appreciation for reptiles and amphibians in hopes of easing others’ fears of the animals

It’s not too often you can run into alligators in a classroom building at MSU. But Wednesday night in the Natural Science Building, members of the MSU Herpetology Club gathered with snakes on their shoulders and lizards in their hands.

Every semester, Herp Night invites people of all ages to interact with reptiles and amphibians of all kinds, from frogs to tortoises to — you guessed it — alligators.

Zoology junior Kristin Keeler said the purpose of the Herpetology Club is simply to share knowledge about these reptiles and amphibians.

“It’s a community on campus where people with reptiles and amphibians can come and show off their animals,” Keeler said.

Keeler said she enjoys getting the chance to teach people what it’s like to own a reptile and how cool they can be.

“This event is mainly to educate the public and share our animals with people who normally wouldn’t come into contact with them,” Keeler said.

Unfortunately, this common lack of contact results

in widespread fear or a misunderstanding of reptiles and amphibians, Keeler said.

Fore st r y g r aduate st udent Danielle Miles said she hopes Herp Night will reduce fear of these animals in the community.

“So many (reptiles and amphibians) are killed every year out of fear when they don’t have to be,” Miles said.

Miles said she wants these animals to be conserved and appreciated the way she and other members of the Herpetology Club appreciate them.

That is animal science senior Christian Plumm’s favorite part — sharing her passion.

“I like that people get to see our pets and be a part of the things that we really enjoy,” Plumm said.

Many attendees who came to Herp Night didn’t have to have a herpetology background to appreciate the myriad of reptiles and amphibians that greeted them.

Rachel Atchison, a research technician in the plant biology department, said she came to the event simply because there was a chameleon on the flier.

“I used to have a chameleon when I was younger, so that’s why I was drawn to it,” Atchison said.

Results of midterm election could mean more federal government gridlock, state Legislature could fare better

On Nov. 4, the power in the federal government shifted dramatically. Republicans took over the U.S. Senate and increased their majority in the U.S. House of Representatives. In the wake of the midterm elections, what remains to be seen is whether Congress, which is now firmly controlled by Republicans, will be able to work with President Obama, a Democrat with whom many Republican leaders have been unable or unwilling to work with. So far, gridlock and partisanship have hindered many of the president’s goals and have limited legislative progress.

But policy may have more progress in the Michigan Legislature.

publisher of Gongwer News Service John Lindstrom said Michigan will see a “testing out of the Republican majorities in terms of what their relationship is with the governor ... with each other ... and with their caucuses. Because as conservative as the Republican majority was in this past legislature, this is probably going to be an even more conservative Legislature.”

As an example, Lindstrom also expressed concern over the education budget.

“If the revenues are there, the governor has said he wants to restore it. You may have some legislators in there who may not be the most sympathetic to the universities,” Lindstrom said.

Lindstrom said Gov. Snyder does not have as “aggressive of an agenda planned as he did four years ago” because “most of his big policies objects has seen approval with a couple of big exceptions,

the biggest right now probably being the highway situation.” Lindstrom said he believes that issue will be addressed either in the upcoming lame duck session in the Michigan Legislature or not at all. This is because many Republicans in Michigan were elected on the platform of not raising taxes, he explained.

MSU associate professor for political science Matt Grossmann agreed with Lindstrom regarding the narrow window for infrastructure repairs, and the potential tension between Republicans in Michigan’s Legislature.

“Many of the Snyder priorities that stalled in the previous Legislature had stalled because of Republican opposition, not Democratic opposition,” Grossmann said.

but many, including Lindstrom and Grossman, are skeptical of that claim.

“We are at a very low point for major policy changes, or any bill for that matter. ... But I wouldn’t be surprised if a few things get enacted,” Grossman said.

Such policies, Grossmann said, include free trade agreements that both Obama and Republicans supported but were unable to pass because of Democrat objections.

Lindstrom said the future could be more dire.

“You face the possibility of the next two years being one of the most dysfunctional that we have seen ever,” Lindstrom said. “You could have another government shutdown ... you’ve got an awful lot of people in Congress that think that’s what they should do — they think they should take it to a fiscal cliff.”

It has been known to knock men down from the highest of highs to the lowest of lows. Head coach Mark Dantonio has become known during his time in East Lansing as the master of taking a team that has been knocked down and building them back up.

Saturday night, against a new foe, there will be another chance for Dantonio and No. 12 MSU (7-2 overall, 4-1 Big Ten) to come back from being beaten. Following a 49-37 loss to No. 8 Ohio State (8-1 overall, 5-0 Big Ten) MSU will travel to take on Big Ten newcomer Maryland (6-3 overall, 3-2 Big Ten).

“I think that any time you lose a game there is going to be disappointment,” Dantonio said.

“It’s going to get better or worse. That’s their choice; that’s our choice as individuals how we handle success, how we handle failure.”

MARYLAND TIES In many ways, facing Maryland will bring a new challenge for the Spartans because they are one of the Big Ten newcomers and have not faced MSU since 1950.

However, there are ties between MSU and Maryland despite the 588 miles that separate them.

Junior linebacker Darien Harris is from Silver Spring, Maryland, and one of only two players on the MSU roster from Maryland.

Harris went to DeMatha Catholic High School, which is on the same cross street as the UMD campus.

Harris said he expects about 100 friends and family to be at the game, invading UMD’s “blackout” of the stadium with some green and white.

“We were able to get a block of tickets,” he said. “At one point, the ticket office told us we couldn’t have more because we were buying so many of them.”

The past few games have been taken personally by many MSU players because the teams they faced (Michigan and Ohio State) were the big schools in their home states and they, as players, were passed over.

Harris said the UMD game is personal to him for different reasons.

“It’s personal in the sense that I know some

of the guys on the team,” he said. “It’s always fun to go against guys you grew up with and competed against in your high school days.”

Dantonio’s coaching staff also has UMD ties. Maryland head coach Randy Edsall faced Dantonio while he was at Cincinnati and Edsall was at Connecticut in the old Big East Conference.

“I’ve always had great respect for Mark,” Edsall said. “He stands for all the right things, and you know when you play them it’s going to be physical and they’re going to be well-coached.”

MSU offensive coordinator Dave Warner played with Edsall when the two were at Syracuse, and coached under Edsall while he was at Connecticut.

MOVING ON After losses, Dantonio has an ability to rally his team and play well the following week.

He will need to do that again following a loss that appears to have knocked MSU out of the running to play in the first ever College Football Playoff.

Dantonio said he is keeping his players motivated by reminding them that there is still a lot to play for.

“I’ve been assured by our players that our mindset is correct,” he said. “We have a lot to play for here. First of all, our season is not done yet, you just don’t know what can happen because there is so much parity in college football today.”

The biggest issue for the Spartans is a defense that has been part of the team’s identity giving up 49 points, 568 yards of total offense and letting the Buckeyes score touchdowns on six straight possessions.

years. Rice thinks it is important to have dance clubs on campus.

“I think it’s a social, healthy activity,” Rice said.

He also feels that the Swing Society can be something students do on the weekends as an alternative to drinking.

“It is healthy in terms of getting people physically active and building social connections,” Rice said.

From time to time, the dancing club puts on shows for the community at local theaters.

They also perform at different venues and events held by church groups and student organizations.

Rice said one of his goals is to continue to grow the State Swing Dance Society by making fliers, chalking sidewalks and reaching out to the community in other ways. Participation hasn’t reached its full potential, especially because the group doesn’t have a space to teach lessons. Rice is encouraging the university to stand behind the State Swing Dance Society because he thinks it is valuable to students.

The Michigan State Swing Society meets every Sunday in Demonstration Hall with lessons from 7:30 to 9 p.m. and open dancing from 9 to 10:30 p.m.

Biophysics professor continues husband’s legacy Angelica Liu’s husband Hain Ti Tien founded book series on plant research she continues to publish

It’s been a little over 10 years since former biophysics professor Angelica Liu’s husband, professor Hsin Ti Tien, passed away.

Tien, who was a physiology professor here at MSU, died unexpectedly May 30, 2004. Liu and Tien both worked in Giltner Hall together.

According to Liu, he was considered one of the founding fathers behind the concept of plant lipid bilayers and had many more things he wanted to accomplish before he suddenly passed.

Liu said she still remembers the day when she walked out of the corridor in Giltner Hall with him for the last time, May 18, 2004.

“He started to talk like some kind of premonition,” said Liu. She said he had asked her to promise him to continue working on the book he had started writing in.

Starting out as a bar in 1960 for factory workers in Lansing, their pizza became so popular, the owners — both from Italy — renamed it to DeLuca’s Restaurant and Pizzeria, according to its website. Unlike most

Italian restaurants in the area, DeLuca’s is family-owned and operated.

DeLuca’s specializes in a variety of pizza “pies” with loads of different toppings and stuffed crust options. They also have homemade manicotti and lasagna dishes and desserts that are popular among student patrons.

For the more budget conscious, Samuel Mancino’s is a great, cheap way to get a little taste of Italy. Along with their famous “grinders,” Mancino’s offers a wide variety of pizzas, pastas and calzones.

This little Italian place offers several different coupons on their website and mobile app. They also have a monthly coupon such as November’s “National Pepper Month” coupon where you can add peppers to any food item free of charge.

Liu decided to carry on his legacy by continuing his life’s work.

“His death took everything out of his hands. I tried to continue writing books in his memory until 2010,” said Liu. Liu has written in 10 different volumes of the book “Advances in Planar Lipid Bilayers and Liposomes,” which were published by Elsevier, which is an academic publishing company based in Amsterdam that distributes all over the world.

Tien was listed as the founding editor for each of these publications and Liu was listed as the editor. Each publication featured different scholars from all over the world, while Liu wrote 30-50 pages for each one, which were about 300 pages each.

Liu, who volunteers in the International Center helping international students, said she still visits her late husband’s grave at Leek Cemetery in Ingham County at least five times per year. She also attends church services every Nov. 1 and 2.

Both of those days commemorate the dead, Nov. 1 being All Saint’s Day and Nov. 2 being All Soul’s Day. Liu said she thinks people should celebrate those who have passed more often.

“Everything we celebrate is alive. I don’t like it. Death shouldn’t be something where somebody is forgotten forever. It shouldn’t be like that,” she said.

The Big Ten Women’s cross country championships last weekend was a head-to-head race against MSU (No. 1), Wisconsin (No. 6) and Michigan (No. 8).

This weekend they head to Madison, Wisconsin to compete against these teams again at the Great Lakes Regional Championship.

Two of U-M’s top five runners, including sophomore Erin Finn who won the Big Ten championship race last year, did not compete at Big Ten, which made Wisconsin MSU’s ultimate contender.

Sophomore Sarah Disanza of Wisconsin finished between MSU’s redshirt senior Leah O’Connor and redshirt sophomore Rachele Schulist. Disanza finished less than two seconds behind O’Connor, making O’Connor the Big Ten champion. According to Big Ten cross country analyst Dave Hunter, it was “two women battling it out for the win.”

running as a team. There are always hard parts in the race and you have to mentally stick with it,” Schulist said. “I give Leah so much credit because I know that at the front she was battling (Disanza) and she stuck with it and didn’t give in.”

The women’s team walked away with the Big Ten championship title.

“I think that day they did a good job of having the appropriate level of energy and confidence going into the meet,” assistant coach Lisa Senakiewich said. “We just want them to perform consistently well and keep bringing up their confidence and their sense of purpose and remember that this is supposed to be fun.”

The Spartans will have the opportunity to race with Wisconsin and Michigan at one more time at regionals before the NCAA championships on Nov. 22.

“I love the pressure of big meets. It’s fun and it’s what I look forward to and what the team looks forward to all year,” O’Connor said. “It’s when things really start to matter and it tests you as a

competitor.”

The top two placing teams at regionals automatically qualify for the NCAA National Championship, while other teams can be bid on depending on their performance throughout their season.

“They’ve learned a lot from previous races and now they can start to apply that to these last meets of the season,” Senakiewich said. “It’s really just a time to enjoy the opportunity that the have.”

Hunter thinks the regionals may be an easy victory for the women Spartans — their chances of heading to Terre Haute, Indiana for nationals is likely.

Redshirt junior Caleb Rhynard led the men’s team to their fifth place win at the Big Ten championships. According to Senakiewich, the men have improved every week and their dedication and teamwork is showing through in their racing.

“I’m ready to see how we can do as a team and stack up against other teams. It’s good competition and it just makes you go faster,” Schulist said.

“It’s time to see what we can do.”

ELPD responds to protesters’ demands The East Lansing Police Department has responded to the demands of a group of students who protested the police force outside and inside the station on Oct. 22.

The official response, issued this morning, addresses the concerns and demands of the protesters concerned with the recent violent actions of police forces in Ferguson, Missouri.

Regarding military weapons, the ELPD website has been updated with a list of the 1,033 program acquisitions that details the supplies the service has received. The department said the equipment saves them money and helps to keep citizens and officers safe.

Other demands included a comprehensive list of recent East Lansing arrests with accurate demographic information. The list from 2010 to 2013 breaks down age, gender, race and details on what the crime was. The list will be updated regularly, police said.

Finally, the ELPD commented on the Ferguson Police Department.

“ELPD has not been presented with all the facts regarding police use of force in Ferguson. It is, therefore, not prudent to critique or judge their actions. As with anyone who is accused of a crime, they are presumed innocent until proven guilty,” the statement said.

ELPD reminded the community that they remain dedicated to serving East Lansing’s residents.

OISS Educational Programs Manager Amber Cordell, who led the workshop, said it’s important for students to not isolate themselves during the winter to try and avoid feeling depressed.

They should make sure they interact with their friends and remain active, she said.

She also recommended getting a sun lamp for those who tend to feel down when they’re not exposed to sunlight for an extensive period of time, which is prone to happen to some people during Michigan winters.

“If you’re feeling depressed, go to the Counseling Center,” Cordell said. “Reach out to people; it’s very normal to feel homesick or lonely.”

The workshop also included tips about how to stay healthy and safe and how dress well for the winter.

“It’s very much about wearing layers, which is the key,” Cordell said, adding that usually temperatures are very warm inside the buildings, when it would be very cold outside.

Hav ing lighter clothes underneath sweaters would prevent students from overheating, explained She also suggested getting a down jacket or coat with a hood and wearing two pairs of gloves if the weather requires that. Students have to keep in mind that whereas down would keep them very warm, it loses its effect if it gets wet, she said “It’s very important to get your head, neck, ears, hands and feet covered,” Cordell said, adding that having boots with good traction is one of the important factors when it comes to walking in snow to avoid slipping.

She also warned students from getting a frost bite. This usually starts when the skin gets very red and then numb.

Students are advised to go indoors as quickly as possible to warm up in such a case.

Students should also avoid putting the affected area immediately in hot water because this could lead to more complications.

Students should also try as much as they can not to drive in bad weather.

When crossing a street while it’s snowing they should also be aware that the driver might not be able to see them or hit the breaks soon enough, so they need to take caution to avoid getting hurt, Cordell stressed.
