The word “veteran” tends to prompt the image of a grandfather or great-uncle who served in Korea and tells stories, both heroic and horrific, of the war.

However, veterans are not limited to the stories our grandparents tell us — MSU’s campus is filled with student veterans who served in wars more recent to our time.

As most students complain about how much homework they’ve been assigned for a week, others are carrying the weight of the memories that many people could not fathom.

The mental makeup it takes to serve in the military and defend our country in a war is one that not a lot of people can say they posses. Veterans from students’ grandparents’

time and their own time have fired shots at innocents, taken lives and witnessed fellow U.S. soldiers losing their own lives.

With how much money is dedicated to national defense, the same amount should be given to soldiers and veterans back home who need help and care.

Many who do survive the battlefields come back with more than physical injuries — the mental trauma, including mental illnesses such as post-traumatic stress disorder.

Symptoms of PTSD for soldiers returning from combat include gruesome nightmares and flashbacks, trouble sleeping and the feeling of emotional numbness.

Twelve out of 100 Gulf War veterans have PTSD in a given year and about 30 out of 100 veterans who served in the Vietnam War have suffered from PTSD during their lifetime.

Veterans sometimes return home only to find themselves on the streets. According to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, an estimated 49,993 veterans are homeless on any given night.

About 12,700 veterans who served in Iraq are homeless, though the number is constantly increasing.

While we do have one day of the year dedicated to these valiant men and women, one

day doesn’t feel like enough to thank them.

People should always keep veterans, and current soldiers, in their thoughts and prayers as a way of saying thanks, but that shouldn’t be the only step they take.

To take it a step further, people should simply try and lead the type of life that these troops, veterans and those lost in the fight, have dedicated their lives to defending.

Veterans deserve respect more than one day of the year. Their sacrifices deserve more than a parade or a ceremony. This respect and gratitude should carry into our everyday lives, even if it’s done by simply thanking the veteran you see wearing their medals.

Self-segregation is common in college, at no one’s fault

I really wasn’t that nervous for my first day of high school. In my eyes, that whole idea of being “the new kid” was thrown out the window, because at that point every single person in the freshman class was considered new.

I thought coming into college was going to be different.

During the application process for MSU, students are asked how they would make an effort to work with 2

and befriend other cultures.

Of course most people would give a positive response. Some students know that they have no intention of stepping out of their comfort zone, but wouldn’t want to ruin their chances of getting accepted into a Big Ten university.

I never knew there would be cliques at a university. Most of the cliques formed are former “sub-cliques” passed on from high school. Those sub cliques then join the main cliques here and fall into larger categories such as race, sports teams or clubs.

An issue that bothers me pertains to the population at parties. It has come to the point that once you find out the address of a party, you have an idea of what the predominant race or social group of whoever attends it will consist of.

I myself am guilty of being skep-

tical when it comes to going to certain gatherings. Sometimes I feel as though if I don’t have similar interests with others at the party, then I probably won’t enjoy myself.

Sometimes when I do attend, I’m pleasantly surprised to find out that everyone who is there just wants to have a good time, and it can be easy to strike up a conversation with someone you might not have thought to before.

Living situations are also unintentionally segregated in some instances.

In cooperative houses, most of the residents tend to be artistic and serene. From my experience talking to housemates, it seemed as though everyone knew each other from past relationships or mutual friends.

When I talked to a few of the house guests who recently moved into cooperative houses, they said they were

recommended from a friend who was already currently living in that house.

Other people living in the house were also mutual friends, or just people that were suggested to them as compatible roommates.

When it comes to off campus, the majority of my friends who are black live in an apartment complex at Chandler Crossings. The Village, The Clubs or The Landings always seem to be a go to spot to live. For the majority of my white friends, they either get an apartment at Cedar Village or some house on Abbot Road.

Now, this is not the campus’ fault.

I just feel as though students choose to or even unknowingly segregate themselves.

Due to familiarity and comfortability this is justified. Some students may carry what they learn from high school to college. Who you sit next to

at the lunch table develops into who you tailgate with.

I’m not saying students completely shut out people who aren’t considered their conventional friends, but they do to a certain length. Greetings on the street should be extended to other encounters such recreational events and organizational affairs.

Unless you plan on going to graduate school, you only have four years to get to know people you may have never had the chance to interact with back home. This should be a time to extend a hand to someone you might not have before, and who knows — the person you sit next to in class every day could turn into a bridesmaid or groomsman in your future wedding.

ASMSU pushes representatives to take more initiative for student interest

At ASMSU’s Thursday committee meetings last week, only one bill was presented to any of the committees, with a minor bill being voted on by the policy committee. ASMSU officials, recognizing this, made an effort to spur representatives to talk to the deans of their respective colleges, if applicable, and to go out and talk to their constituents.

After a question was raised to two of the

committees if any of the representatives had actually gone out and met with their constituents, a very small number of representatives raised their hands.

Chief of Staff Kiran Samra made a point that in order for people to care about ASMSU, representatives are going to have to do things worth caring about.

Since this is the fall semester, the first in ASMSU for many of the representatives, some could be having trouble adjusting to the demands of being a representative, Samra said.

“A lot of them are new and getting acclimated to what being a rep is, so right now they’re a little bit more concerned with trying to learn the ropes and not mess things up,” Samra said.

ASMSU President James Conwell and Vice President for Finance and Operations Greg Jackson each encouraged representatives to come talk to them for ideas or help in reaching out to those they represent.

Jackson reminded them that they are the face of one of the largest and most powerful student governments in the country. They run a large organization, relatively independent from the university, a luxury many university student governments don’t enjoy, Jackson added.

Conwell spoke to representatives after the committee meetings and said many were excited to progress in ASMSU efforts.

Conwell appealed to the committees’ influence to spur them forward.

“You have the power to make a difference,” Conwell said. “Don’t let that slip through your hands.”

ST. JOHNS — Tyrel Bredernitz was sentenced today in Clinton County Court to a minimum of 25 years in prison for his involvement in the death of MSU sophomore Dustyn Frolka today in Clinton County Court. If not granted parole, he could serve up to 35 years.

Bredernitz, 18, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in September.

Judge Randy Tahvonen said Frolka’s death was a tragic one, and “is a story of a death out of time that didn’t need to be.”

While deliberating on a sentence, Tahvonen said the court couldn’t possibly give “a sense of wholeness” to Frolka’s family, but hopes Frolka’s memory won’t be a source of torment for the family in the future.

Bredernitz and his accomplices, Saline, Mich., teens Samantha Grigg, 18, and Brendan Heim, 17, all pled guilty to their charges associated with Frolka’s Feb. 15 death.

Frolka’s death was a robbery gone wrong, according to previous testimony. After luring Frolka into Grigg’s car, Heim and Bredernitz proceeded to beat Frolka, reportedly using brass knuckles.

After Frolka jumped from the moving car onto the side of I-96 in Bath Township, the two continued to beat Frolka and stripped him of his belongings, leaving him partially clothed and in respiratory distress along the highway.

After being taken to Lansing’s Sparrow hospital by emergency responders, Frolka, who was 19 years old, died shortly after.

Bredernitz apologized for his crimes during the sentencing.

“My heart goes out to Dustyn Frolka, his family, his friends. I did not know my actions would cause this much pain,” Bredernitz said. “I’m deeply sorry and I do regret what my actions have caused.”

As well as an MSU student, Frolka was a father to an infant daughter and was an aspiring rapper.

Frolka’s family, including his stepmother, Eileen Hincka, who asked for the maximum sentencing for Bredernitz, spoke during the sentencing.

“If not for the actions of other people, Dustyn would have been left on the side of the highway to die like a piece of garbage,” Hincka said.

“He will forever be 19.”

Hincka mentioned Frolka’s daughter, and noted how her family is mourning the loss of a son, a brother and a father.

“Mr. Bredernitz took away a little girl’s daddy,” she said. “She did not have him with her when she took her first steps, said her first words, celebrated her first birthday.”

Heim is the only defendant left to be sentenced, as Grigg pleaded guilty to manslaughter and unarmed robbery earlier this year and was sentenced to six to 15 years in May. Heim also recently pleaded guilty to first-degree murder and will serve between 32 1/2 and 60 years in prison. He is scheduled to be sentenced Nov. 24.

Residents who campaign against the sale of three city-owned parking lots are claiming their successful effort represents a vote of no confidence toward the East Lansing government.

East Lansing resident Jeffrey Hank said many residents are fed up with the decisions East Lansing City Council has made in recent years.

Hank was in charge of two petitions that did not make it to the November ballot — one asked for a public city attorney and the other for the decriminalization of marijuana in the city.

“A lot of people who voted yes on the proposal just wanted to see something done, they don’t necessarily know about all the history. They just see that corner and want to build something,” Hank said. “A lot of people who voted no also want to see something done, but they don’t trust city hall or city council.”

Hank said the 43.42 percent of “no” ballots show a lack of confidence and trust in the local government.

East Lansing Mayor Nathan Triplett said although the proposal did not pass, the majority of people want change.

“What it shows is that a strong majority of residents supported the proposal,” Triplett said.

Triplett said the next step is to consider all the options and try to move forward with a plan that can benefit all.

“If we know for sure who’s going to build it, what’s going to be there, and what was actually going to cost to the tax payers of the city, they will put it to a vote again and I think it’s going to pass,” Hank said.

Eliot Singer, a long time critic of East Lansing government, said the vote is part of a momentum residents are going through.

“This is a step for major reforms and we are going to see over the next year or two ... this 43 percent minority becomes a strong majority as more people understand what the issues really were about,” Singer said.

Although 56.58 percent of voters agreed on selling the city-owned parking lots, in order for the ballot to pass it needed at least 60 percent of approval, according to the city charter. But this is just the latest in a number of failed city-owned property sales that have been put to a vote.

Hank said the failure of other projects, such as City Center II, might have influenced the decision.

Despite challenges, organizations look to help international students look for jobs in America

With the end of the semester coming to an end, some international students who may be graduating are faced with a tough decision: do they try to get an internship in the United States, or do they return home to look for a job?

For those who choose to find an internship in the United States, they might be facing some difficulty convincing employers to hire them.

“It’s worth it for companies to hire international students because we can demonstrate that we’re more eligible for positions,” said electrical engineering senior Wenbo Gong.

The China native said international students bring an asset to the workplace because of their cultural background, in addition to proving that they’re as good as domestic students by completing an undergraduate degree in a U.S. university.

Despite the more global environment we’re living in nowadays, international students are still faced with the U.S. visa regulations that make it more difficult for employers to hire them, Gong said.

When hiring a non-American citizen, employers have to fill out extra paperwork and hire an attorney to obtain a work visa or authorization for the person.

The GTRI was launched about three years ago when a study suggested retaining international students would help Michigan regain its economic power, said GTRI Director of Marketing and Communications Anne Craft.

Craft said the main purpose of the organization is to connect international students with employers, specifically ones based in Michigan, and to educate the employers on what needs to be done.

“We can provide resources, but at the end of the day, it’s (the employers’) responsibility to get it through,” she said, adding that the organization even has immigration attorneys on their advisory board to assist with visa issues.

Yin said OISS is assisting with the promotion of the initiative’s Michigan’s Global Future Conference for International Students to connect them with employers and assist them to find jobs through various seminars. The conference will take place Nov. 21 in Detroit, and there will be another conference in February in Grand Rapids.

In addition to the conference, Craft said the initiative is starting an online registry, where international students can add their information for employers to be able to connect with them.

She said by January the registry should be available for employers to view.

Fox recommended that students take advantage of the resources they have and try to get an internship before graduation.

Almost a year after its inception, the Veteran’s Resource Center in the basement of Student Services remains dormant. There’s a few chairs arranged in a circle near a patriotic mural on a wall, but no phones ringing with inquiries regarding student veteran life, and no employees to answer them.

Although it might not be much now, animal science junior and Michigan National Guard veteran Nick Babcock said he has high hopes for the resource center and the university when it comes to meeting the needs of student veterans.

“The university is better than they were last year,” Babcock said. “There’s been a lot of things the institution has incorporated. Even just trying to figure out how many veterans are on campus is a step forward.”

Currently, MSU can only track students who use GI bill benefits, which can be used by children or spouses of veterans. With optional reporting, Babcock said MSU is trying to gauge just how many veterans are on campus.

The next step Babcock would like to see is a full-time resource officer in the center, who could help answer questions and guide student veterans at MSU. “A resource officer in here would be great so we can have a place where incoming veterans or people who would like to be a part of MSU can call and talk to someone,” Babcock said.

“The first thing we had to do was get the room established. They’re making progress, even the furniture wasn’t in here until two months ago.

It gives us a base of operations.”

Babcock, who is also the president of MSU Student Veterans of America, said even though the center is largely symbolic at this stage, he

hopes it can bring together more student veterans in the future.

One of the reasons he joined the organization was so he could have some questions answered about college life. “(The) biggest thing for me was involvement, to connect with other veterans especially as a resource aspect, because so many of us go through the same trials and tribulations that it is a little bit easier when you can talk to someone who has already been through it,” he said.

The biggest challenge can be fitting in with a younger population of students when most veterans are well into their adulthood, Babcock said. Babcock himself is 34, and has a family of his own.

MSU student war veteran copes with PTSD by doing yoga

Professional writing senior Logan Stark served a tour in Afghanistan. Now back in East Lansing, he has participated in a study that looked at how yoga can help war veterans coping with post-traumatic stress disorder

Post-traumatic stress disorder isn’t a problem too many students here at MSU face. But for professional writing senior Logan Stark, he knows it all too well.

Stark, who is graduating in December, served a tour in Afghanistan and was in the Marine Corps from 2007 to 2011.

Stark created a documentary to honor the 25 fallen comrades in his battalion titled “For the 25,” in his advanced multimedia writing class, where he said he “was starting to explore what exactly PTSD was.” He also wrote an article for The New York Times on his experience in Afghanistan and the making of his film.

After all of this, however, Stark said he wasn’t aware of how PTSD was affecting his brain. It was this summer when he found an unlikely solution — yoga.

Through MSU’s Department of Psychology, Stark took part in a nine-week experiment to figure out whether yoga can help war veterans going through PTSD. Stark heard about the experiment through East Lansing yoga instructor Kintla Ernst, who was a part of the study. Stark said Ernst underwent trauma as a child herself, and knew how beneficial yoga could be for someone going through it. The study was an opportunity to find concrete evidence of that.

“She had read an article that I had written and she tracked me down, sent me a message and we got coffee. She asked me if I would be interested in participating in the study with the Michigan State psychology department,” Stark said. “It was a no-brainer, anything that I could do to help people who had gone through trauma.”

The study had Stark do yoga once a week and perform a series of computer tests that measured focus and distractibility. During the study, they would measure his brain waves

with an electroencephalogram, which recorded his brain activity throughout the nine weeks.

Before the experiment, Stark said his working memory, or short-term memory, was low and increased throughout the experiment.

Stark also said the experiment is what helped him to realize that his “focus was horrible.”

“I was becoming aware of what my mental state was. I felt like (by) becoming aware I was able to use the yoga to improve that,” Stark said. “I can focus so much better now and most of the things I didn’t realize were wrong are just gone, totally improved.”

Stark said that one result that happens

when people go through a traumatic experience is that people become disconnected from themselves.

“That can cause all sorts of problems for a person. Yoga is a way to establish that connection with the body. It’s sort of a really good way to connect the mind and body,” Stark said.

Among his poetry, Gilmore has written numerous fiction and nonfiction stories, while also working as a freelance journalist for The Progressive Magazine located in Wisconsin, weekly dailies in Washington, D.C. and The Washington Post.

Although he shifted his focus after becoming an MSU law professor in 2010, Gilmore said he will continue his advocacy work through both avenues of his career.

“I really have a great love for words,” he said.

“It’s hard to say what’s the best about writing, other than knowing that people saw your work and appreciate your dedication to art. There’s a lot to say about that.”

Balancing his life between law and poetry, MSU associate clinical professor of law Brian Gilmore has increased the scope of his devotion to advocacy work.

After beginning to experiment with poetry during his college years, Gilmore said his work as a student activist in the divestment movement against apartheid in South Africa influenced his writing in many ways.

“When I got done with this advocacy work, I realized I didn’t want to just write, but I wanted to be a citizen,” he said. “I wanted to help out and actually try to make change and involve myself in this process.”

His experiences as an activist are demonstrated in his first two books of poetry that address cultural and political topics within music and society. In his second book “Jungle Nights and Soda Fountain Rags: Poem for Duke Ellington,” Gilm-

“Music is really important for what I do. Poetry is like music itself,” he said.

With the publication of his newest book of poetry, “We Didn’t Know Any Gangsters”,, Gilmore said he strays away from the topics in his previous works, and takes a more personal approach.

Four takeaways from MSU football’s 49-37 loss to Ohio State Saturday

No. 12 MSU football fell Saturday, losing to No. 8 Ohio State, 49-37, at Spartan Stadium.

The loss was spurred by an impressive performance from Buckeye freshman quarterback J.T. Barrett and ultimately killed any hopes and dreams of MSU qualifying for the inaugural College Football Playoff this post-season.

SECOND QUARTER SWING Football coaches always say a game is determined by a handful of plays, and none may have been more of a decider for MSU than junior center Jack Allen’s holding penalty in the second quarter.

After regaining the lead, MSU was given a great opportunity when OSU fumbled the following kickoff. Only a few plays later, senior running back Jeremy Langford scored from 11 yards out but the touchdown run was called back because Allen was caught holding an OSU defender. The play took away what would have been a 14-point lead.

Sophomore kicker Michael Geiger added insult to injury missing a 39-yard field goal attempt, squandering away a golden opportunity. From that point on, OSU outscored MSU 35-16.

“We got a chance, we go in for a touchdown (but) get a holding call,” head coach Mark Dantonio said. “Makes it 28‑14, but he takes it off the board and we miss the field goal. So the next play is a 79 yard touchdown. So it goes from 28‑14 to 21‑21, and all of a sudden momentum just flipped.”

CAN’T BLAME OFFENSE Anytime your offense scores 37 points in a game, you should win. Especially when you have a normally potent defense like MSU. While some of the stats and numbers came late and didn’t play a role in the final score, this one can’t be pinned on the offense.

SECONDARY EXPOSED All season, many were worried about this defense surrendering big plays and those concerns were validated Saturday, most notably in the secondary.

Barrett torched the MSU secondary this past weekend for 300 passing yards and three touchdowns on only 16 completions. Most of Barrett’s staggering numbers came on explosive plays, including 44-yard and 79-yard touchdown passes.

It appeared that OSU’s game plan was to attack sophomore cornerback Darian Hicks — and it worked. Hicks was beat for a couple big plays and following the game it was evident he knew he didn’t have his best performance.

Women’s basketball’s starting five were statistically impressive in 71-50 win in Sunday’s exhibition opener over Grand Valley State Sunday, but a few concerns were highlighted as well.

Three Spartans recorded double-doubles in the season opener, as sophomore guard Tori Jankoska scored 15 points and gathered 11 rebounds, redshirt sophomore forward Aerial Powers scored 20 points and 10 rebounds, and senior forward Becca Mills scored 11 points and 11 rebounds.

“Tori is really moving to the true point guard position, I mean she’s really embracing that and doing a nice job,” head coach Suzy Merchant said.

“The nice thing too about her is she is a nice defensive rebounding guard, which helps our transition game a little bit.”

Powers was the game’s leading scorer, but she also stuffed the stat sheet with her 10 rebounds and five assists.

“In practice, (Merchant) makes us do a certain amount of passes before we can score, so I guess that’s where the assists come in,” Powers said. “I’m looking for my teammates a little bit more. With the rebounds, it’s just effort and hustling and boxing out.”

Powers shot 7-17 from the field, and she admitted that she “definitely needs to shoot better.”

In the post for the Spartans, Mills and senior center Jasmine Hines combined for 23 points and 14 rebounds. Hines scored her 12 points in just 20 minutes of game time.

“I do think they’re a nice combination when they play together,” Merchant said. “We can play each one of them singly as a five, or we can put

them together in the 4-5 combination and they know each other well, give us a little bit more size and presence.”

Despite the numbers, Merchant believes that both Hines and Mills “should have been more dominant.” Hines pulled in just three rebounds, and the two also missed a couple easy shots in the paint.

Mills believes that the two could work off of each other as the season goes on and establish a solid presence around the rim.

“I think that with me and her together, I’m more finesse-y,” Mills said. “We balance each other really well, and I think we a have a dual post attack.

This year we can really be great inside together. Tonight we didn’t show that as well as we should have.”

A glance at the stat sheet will show that all five Spartan starters scored in double digits. The drop off, however, was in bench production.

MSU managed only two points and one assist from its bench.

“Our bench did not do a very good job of coming in and giving us a lot of positive things,” Merchant said. “I kind of felt like they were just out there, and we need more out of them. To me, it’s good to see five people in double figures obviously, but I think the other side of that is that those guys gotta come along and do a better job of attacking a little bit more.”

Although it was just an exhibition contest, Merchant understands that some of these issues will need to be addressed, as the competition only gets better from here on out.

“You’re never gonna be the team you want to be this time of year, but we better get there in a hurry with the schedule that we have,” Merchant said.
