Jeffery Taylor, forward for the Charlotte Hornets in the NBA, pleaded guilty to domestic assault charges Wednesday, Reuters reported.

According to cour t records, Taylor and the victim, a female MSU student, “had a dating Taylor relationship.”

Taylor, 25, was arrested in an East Lansing hotel in September and pleaded not guilty to the misdemeanors of domestic violence, assault and battery, and malicious destruction of a building.

Taylor was also charged with the assault of a male employee at the Marriott in East Lansing where Taylor was arrested. The employee’s LinkedIn profile lists his position as “head of security.”

The assault and battery charge was dropped Wednesday, but Taylor pleaded guilty to both domestic assault and destruction of property.

Ingham County Prosecutor Stuart Dunnings said he couldn’t go into detail about the destruction made to the property, but said there was $200 to $1,000 worth of damage.

Although he initially faced up to a year in jail, Taylor’s current misdemeanor charges could see him facing up to 93 days in jail. The Ingham County prosecutor would not object to Taylor being placed in a probation diversion program that would significantly lower jail time as well as strike the domestic abuse charge from his record.

Students ready to scare in Haunted Auditorium

With more than 120 actors from various areas of study, this year’s Haunted Auditorium is not just another theater production.

The theme for the 6th annual Haunted Auditorium is “The Hostile,” and with a kitchen, prostitute room and back alley, it features more rooms than in the past. Students involved with the Haunted Auditorium hold jobs ranging from makeup, acting and prop building to directing. That variety allows students to find a way they can contribute based on their skills and personality.

Participation in the event has skyrocketed over the years, allowing students who don’t major in theatre to get involved.

“It is so great to see so many people come together … I still get emails from people that

want to do it, which is awesome,” said co-producer and theatre junior Christine Thibodeau.

Even with increased interest, the production has had its challenges. They are only allowed to use half of the Auditorium this year because a concert will be held on the other side. However, with so many hands on deck, it has been easier to solve problems. They’ve made the path through the Auditorium longer and added more blood and gore than in previous years. Their goal is to make the house as authentic as possible to bring in the scare factor.

According to co-producer and theatre junior Ellie Seeyle, more than 2,000 people came to the Haunted Auditorium last year. This year they are expecting as many, if not more, attendees.

“People are really excited about it … it is scary, people scream and then they tell their friends, and word gets out and people are really into it,” Thibodeau said.

Stay healthy in cold weather, skimpy costumes

Halloween is right around the corner and MSU students can be more at risk than ever for catching a cold.

Known to be one of the most festive holidays of the year, Halloween is celebrated outside. With children trick-or-treating door to door and adults attending costume parties or haunted houses, it’s a time when people can dress up and have fun. But it can also be hard on the immune system.

This year, Halloween falls on a Friday, and a cold, rainy day has been forecast. Marketing and Communications Manager for Olin Health Center Kathi Braunlich said dressing according to the weather is key for preventing illness.

“Ideally, if you are going to be outside for any length of time, you should have skin covered up, wear gloves and keep the rain and ice off of you with something hooded and waterproof,” Braun-

lich said. “And wear shoes that will provide traction on wet, slippery leaves or ice.”

Although cold weather does not cause illness, Braunlich said it is still important to dress appropriately for the weather. Braunlich mentioned how generally students get ill by coming in close contact with others and spreading the virus. And there’s definitely a chance of that at the festivities at bars and various Halloween parties happening over the weekend.

“With cold weather you generally have a lot more people gathered inside, which makes it easier to pass viruses around,” Braunlich said. “If someone gets soaking wet in the cold rain on the way to a party and then is crammed into a room with a lot of other people, they might get sick but it wasn’t the rain or cold — they came in contact with a virus.”

According to Braunlich, there are plenty of ways to avoid getting sick.

“The best ways to prevent illness are to get a flu shot each fall,”

Braunlich said. “Wash your hands often with soap and water or use hand sanitizer — especially before eating or after touching stair rails, elevator buttons, door knobs or other places sick people put their hands.

“The third thing is to distance yourself from people who are sneezing, coughing or blowing their nose. They might think it is allergies, but you don’t want to take a chance,” she added.

Staying safe also plays a large matter when going out for Halloween. MSU students can follow simple measures in order to stay safe, Braunlich said.

“The bigger dangers for students out late on Halloween are making sure they are visible to drivers, and that they take measures to protect themselves,” Braunlich said.

“The other thing is to make sure you protect yourself – stay with friends, practice good habits when drinking alcohol. Like keeping track of your drinks, eating before drinking, having a glass of water after each drink. And trust your gut instincts,” she said.

— advertising senior Brianna Moss The Yates Family Cider Mill in Rochester Hills, Mich., has been making cider since 1876. Their cider-making process is unique because it is powered by water from the Clinton River.

Moss said she enjoys seeing the mill turning in the water year after year — it gives the place an old-fashioned feel.

Their preservative-free cider blends the tastes of up to six different varieties of apples.

Moss said the scenery might be the best part of Yates. Visitors get to stroll down paths lined with beautiful fall leaves, taking in the view of the Clinton River which runs beside them.

The Country Mill “Going in the corn maze really puts me in the fall spirit.” — hospitality business junior Hanna Russell Just a 30 minute drive from East Lansing, The Country Mill in Charlotte, Mich. provides a variety of activities, including hayrides, a haunted cider mill and a corn maze.

The Country Mill also offers many products that other cider mills don’t. In addition to the ordinary apples and doughnuts, guests can buy blueberries, peaches, and sweet corn.

There is also the opportunity for visitors to pick their own apples from the trees in The Country Mill orchard. According to their website, this is one of the few places in mid-Michigan where people can still do this.

Erwin Orchards is third-generation family farm located in South Lyon, Mich., less than an hour away from East Lansing.

Visitors can enjoy several flavors of doughnuts, including apple spice and pumpkin.

At Erwin Orchards, guests have the opportunity to pick their own pumpkins, raspberries, and cherries. There is also a corn maze, petting farm, and a haunted house, the “Barn of Horrors.”

Uncle John’s Cider Mill “I’m not kidding, there was like 10,000 people there.” — political theory and constitutional democracy and english senior James VanSteel said of his visit last weekend.

Who could forget the East Lansing favorite?

Uncle John’s in St. Johns, Mich. is only a 30 minute drive from East Lansing.

VanSteel said he may have exaggerated the popularity of Uncle John’s, but he still said the line to get cider and doughnuts was out the door and through the parking lot.

Uncle John’s was originally a wholesale fruit and vegetable farm, but John and Carolyn Beck decided to convert the place into a cider mill.

As time went on, they began to offer more and more goods, including pies and preserves.

Now guests can enjoy weekend entertainers for fall “festival-type” events. There is a gift shop, Snack Barn and even a winery.

Spooky spots on campus: rumored hauntings at MSU Some well-known spots on campus are the subject of some creepy rumors, according to MSU Archives made appearances in the garden.

From hearing voices and noises to seeing figures, many different buildings at MSU are suspected to be visited by entities aside from current students and faculty members.

Since MSU is such an old campus, some think it is haunted by the deceased.

From the MSU Archives, alumna Sarah Bicsak compiled a list in 2013 of the spots believed to be haunted and what activity occurs there.

Beaumont Tower Aside from the legend about kissing in the shadow of the tower, a more chilling myth is associated with the tower. Allegedly, a student killed in World War II haunts the tower looking for the sweetheart he left behind.

FAirchild Theatre in the auditorium It has been said a little boy haunts this location and has been seen wandering the seats of the auditorium and peeking out of the third floor windows, unable to find his way out. Guests have also supposedly said to have heard footsteps and whispers.

W.J. Beal Botanical Garden Allegedly, students and faculty have reported hearing screams from the garden but finding no one present to make the noises. Apparitions have also supposedly

Mayo Hall Though Mary Mayo herself died almost 30 years prior to the construction of Mayo Hall, it has the most speculation of being haunted.

A photograph of Mayo herself hangs on the wall of the first floor and the eyes supposedly follow people through the room. Mayo’s spirit has said to wander the halls and a woman figure has allegedly been seen playing the piano.

The fourth floor of the building has been sealed off and it is known as the “red room.” Supposedly, a young women hanged herself in the room and satanic rituals have also occurred in the room.

Holmes Hall The sixth and twelfth floors of Holmes Hall are believed to be haunted by mysterious men wandering the floors and entering and exiting the elevators. Allegedly the lights often flicker and doors and windows open on their own and slam shut.

Hubbard Hall The 12th floor of the hall is allegedly haunted. Students have supposedly reported hearing running and laughter coming from empty halls. An entity has also allegedly entered the elevator on the 12th floor, always getting off on the ninth. The presence is detected by a cool breeze leaving the elevator.

Some Halloween costumes can be offensive to students of certain backgrounds, cultures Are students donning sombreros, head wraps, headdresses and blackface taking the holiday too far?

Halloween — the one day of the year when you have the chance to become anyone or anything.

Of course, costumes are meant to be fun, but they may also offend certain cultures.

Apparel and textile design and French senior Melisa Valdés said that many of the costumes she’s seen have been comical, but some of them have been pushed out of context and presented as racist.

During the Mexican Revolution in the 18th century, sombreros were used as sun protection for farmers. Since then, and for more than 100 years of independence, modern-day Mexicans rarely wear sombreros unless it is for festivities.

“I was raised in Mexico. You never see people dressing like a (stereotypical) Mexican. So I never thought that was a thing until I came

(to the U.S.) and passed by costume stores,” Valdés said.

Valdés was referring to the stereotypical depictions of Mexicans wearing a sombrero, poncho and commonly clutching a bottle of tequila.

If generalizing a culture or ethnicity is inappropriate every day throughout the year, should Halloween be an exception?

Last Halloween, Twitter circulated pictures with offensive costumes such as interpretations of Middle Eastern individuals dressed in head wraps with fake dynamite tied around their waist. Blackface and Chinese take-out outfits are also costumes people choose to wear as a joke.

A frequent go-to costume is to dress up as a American Indian. Accompanying the outfit is often a headdress with feathers. But in American Indian cultures, a headdress is an item of honor earned over time through acts of bravery.

Since there are more than 500 federally recog-

nized tribes, American Indians might feel disrespected if their culture is generalized. Interdisciplinary studies senior Cassondra Church is the secretary of the North American Indigenous Student Organization. As an American Indian, Church said they refer to their distinctive clothing as regalia or an outfit, and for people to call it a costume is offensive. “(American Indians) can’t just put on a costume and call ourselves Native Americans — that’s us every day,” Church said.

While not a common sight on Halloween, the effects of blackface run deeper than just makeup — it’s overtly offensive to black men and women.

In the 19th and 20th centuries, white males used a burnt cork or grease paint to blacken their faces and performed as black stereotypes in a number of racist caricatures.

“I think people should understand that we do

not live in a post-racial society,” writing, rhetoric and American culture assistant professor Denise Troutman said.

Troutman said recent incidents, such as Julianne Hough dressing in blackface, cause a resurfacing of the long history of insensitivity toward the black community in the United States. Students and others may not intend to show racism when they dress in stereotypical costumes, but education on the history of why it is inappropriate should continue to be implemented.

“I think one of the reasons people say ‘I didn’t mean it’ or ‘I didn’t intend to offend anyone’ is because there is not enough of the historical perspectives of people of color in secondary level education,” Troutman said.

She said while race is always a sensitive topic, it’s important that MSU students and students across the nation deconstruct the reasons why these are relevant issues.

Gearing up for Halloween as anything from Paul Bunyan to a glamorous skeleton, Spartans took their spirit to Dublin Square Irish Pub Wednesday night.

Many chose to enter in The State News’ Fright Fest costume contest in hopes of winning one of the three prizes.

It didn’t matter whether the costume was homemade or storebought. All that contestants needed to win was the most Twitter favorites of a picture showing off their costume.

The pictures with the most favorites received first place, and a $100 gift card to Dublin. Second place won free pizzas for one year from GoombaS Pizza, and third received $20 of cab cash from Party Van. This year’s first place winner is education senior Mark Wright The State N e ws

for his Iron Man costume. Second place went to general management senior Kirstie Liakos for her Barbie costume. Finally, third place was awarded to Taylor Mckader for an Austin Powers costume.

Spartan Iron Man Sparty might have some competition this Halloween.

Decked out in green and white, Wright entered the costume contest as Spartan Iron Man. “I wanted to be this because I just love comic books,” Wright said. “I love Iron Man.” Wright said he cut a garbage can to create his “iron suit” and made slits in it for abs. To top it off, he carved out a Spartan head on his chest and had a light shining through from behind.

“Behind the garbage can is a garbage bag and a clear film to diffract the light,” Wright said.

He said it took him two days to make this complex ensemble two years ago.

“This is the third year of me wearing it,” Wright said. “Everyone asks me to take a picture with them — I took a lot of pictures that I’ve never seen.”

Glamorous Skeleton Undecided senior Kaci Card based her entire costume off of her makeup choice, and decided to be a skeleton.

Going for a look that was half skeleton, half glam, Card followed a makeup tutorial she found on YouTube.

“I only did makeup on half of my face because I didn’t want it all to be dark,” Card said. “I wanted to still look pretty.”

Card said it took her 30 minutes just to put on all of her makeup, paying attention to every intricate detail.

Black Widow Unlike many of the others, dietetics senior Erin Sauve chose to go out on a whim and purchase her Hallow-

een costume this year.

Sauve bought her costume, the Black Widow from “The Avengers,” at the Halloween store in Frandor.

She said half of the time she buys her costumes and the other half she makes them.

“I just knew I wanted to be her,” Sauve said. “I like what she wore and her hair is curly and so is mine, so I could pull it off.”

While whiteboard sketches of pumpkins and messages wishing for a happy and safe holiday weekend are common to see on residents’ doors, some residents are getting even more creative with their door decor.

Psychology and neuroscience junior Kate Rentschler said she enjoys being creative and making many of her own decorations, like the garland of ghosts and the paper candy corns that frame the top of her door.

“I think Halloween’s my favorite holiday ... I just like dressing up and being silly,” Rentschler said.

Especially around the holidays, creativity proves to be an opportunity to bring students together. Prenursing junior Erica Brockway said Rentschler helped her put up some of her decora-

tions and make it look nicer.

Brockway said she also enjoys expressing her creativity, carving her own pumpkin and spider decorations.

“I love fall ... festivities and ... decorating for holidays,” Brockway said.

Other students, like agribusiness management junior Nicole Pinage, decorate for reasons related to family tradition.

“My grandma mails me ... decorations pretty much for every holiday,” Pinage said.

Pinage said she gets a box of decorations a few weeks before a given holiday and puts them up around the first of the month. While she did not pick out this year’s Halloween decorations, she does appreciate them.

“We always decorated at home, so ... you (have to) decorate while you’re here,” Pinage said.

Dueling columns: super sexy costumes vs. more modest attire

Get geared up for casual feminism: the Halloween edition.

Each and every single year, there are hundreds of MSU girls dressed up in costumes that show a lot of skin. And you know what?

That’s OK. I know this might sound a bit shocking, but women have boobs. We have butts too. And if we want to, we’re going to wear things that are going to accentuate them, especially on the one day a year it’s socially acceptable to be a mermaid and wear a clam bra in public.

Yes, we know it’s going to be cold, but we can brave the 20-minute walk to the frat house or apartment party and proceed to sweat all our makeup off dancing inside.

Now, there is the argument that “modest is hottest.” This tells women that they are only dressing for the approval of others. Other people are only going to like you if you’re beautiful, and you’re only going to be perceived as beautiful if you dress modestly. That idea is absolutely archaic.

Instead of basing what women should wear around what men want them to wear (and let’s be real here, many men would prefer that girls wear skimpy outfits), women should be encouraged to wear whatever makes them feel confident.

Women have the freedom to dress how they

want on Halloween, and every other day of the year. Wearing what we want to wear empowers us.

And if a girl is wearing a costume because she wants to attract the attention of men, so what? Wow, women like casual hookups too!

The only valid argument I could come up with is that sexy versions of Halloween costumes don’t accurately portray whatever someone is trying to dress up as. I understand that. But if everyone stuck to a certain format, it would ruin the creativity behind the outfits.

Wait. It’s “slutty,” you say? I’m sorry, I wasn’t aware that the clothes I wear define my sexual promiscuity. The girl (or 10 girls) wearing a sexy kitty costume on Halloween sleeps around, right? You can see her thighs and her shoulders, after all. I bet her parents don’t love her. I heard she has an STD, too. Slut.

Calm down. Wearing a sexy Halloween costume is getting into the spirit of the season.

It has nothing to do with a woman’s sexual activity, which, by the way, is absolutely none of your business.

Ladies, if you want to wear a revealing Playboy bunny costume a la Reese Witherspoon in “Legally Blonde,” wear it and rock it and who gives a f*** about what anyone else says. If you want to go with something more modest, all the power to you. It’s your choice and nobody has a right to take it from you.

Full disclosure: I’m going as a (you guessed it) sexy version of Luigi and my boyfriend is going as Mario. I chose the sexy costume because I like how I look in it and the normal costume looks absolutely ridiculous on me.

It’s a person’s choice to wear whatever the hell they want on Halloween. That’s kind of the point of the holiday.

The costumes some women choose to wear on Halloween are shocking, to say the least.

Most of them reveal too much skin, using painfully small amounts of fabric. They wear any profession that can be sexualized on Halloween. Though some women claim this is empowering, truly it’s a sad display of women objectifying themselves and claiming some sort of social liberation.

I don’t like that the holiday (a childhood favorite of many) has turned into a political event, but unfortunately that is the world we live in. Feminists will say that dressing provocatively is something they do as an empowering move.

It makes sense, with the idea that modest clothing is a tool used by the patriarchy to oppress women.

This couldn’t be further from the truth.

The costumes themselves range from a clear excuse to dress in very little clothing, like a sexy cat, to somewhat creative, yet still unfortunate: a sexy candy corn. I don’t think Halloween should be an excuse to dress that way.

It used to be a religious holiday in the Catholic Church, the day before All

Saints Day. Though the overt secularization of the holiday is probably irreversible, this sexualization is something that should be frowned upon by society.

Depending on what type of guy he is, he’ll see a girl with self-esteem issues that he either won’t want anything to do with, or he’ll want to sleep with her.

Neither of those are empowering.

You could say that it doesn’t matter what men think, as long as the women wearing those costumes are happy.

But in my experience, people who loudly proclaim they don’t care what others think of them are the ones who seem to care the most.

There are otherwise pretty girls who might feel like they have to dress like that. When they go out on Halloween night, the type of men they will attract won’t respect them.

They’re not going to sympathize with their feminist views. They are going to see her as an object, not a person. How can she expect a man to respect her, much less society as a whole, if she doesn’t respect herself?

When women wear costumes dubbed “sexy firefighter” or “sexy ebola nurse,” it makes them into more of an object than Western Christian views do. Men don’t see women dressed like that and think of how empowered they look — they think about what they want.

If women choose to wear provocative costumes for Halloween, they should consider the message they’re actually sending and not the one they think they are.

Field hockey ready for a tough last game of the regular season

Heading into the last game of the regular season, No. 19 MSU field hockey is looking to continue its winning ways against No. 9 Louisville this Saturday in East Lansing. Now back in the NFHCA top-20 rankings, the Spartans will welcome a tough Cardinals team as they look to carry some momentum into the Big Ten Tournament starting on Nov. 6.

“It’s that prep game going into the tournament,” head coach Helen Knull said. “It’s really about us executing ... and then putting together our 70 minutes again.

“We know we can do it. We’ve done it now — Iowa game, our Michigan game — we played solid games, and that’s what I want to see us keep building on.”

The victories over U-M and Iowa have both come in the last two weekends. They were a satisfying sight to Knull, who has preached to her team about putting together those patented “70 minutes of Spartan hockey.” Unfortunately, it hasn’t been attainable for MSU on a game-to-game basis.

This season is running a similar course as the 2013 season for MSU, up to this point. After struggling to find consistency throughout the season, the Spartans caught fire at the end. Finally finding those efforts that Knull stresses for, MSU won the Big Ten Tournament and advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament.

Knowing that moment is right around the corner for this year’s team, this weekend’s game holds an extra emphasis. This will be that last chance for MSU to learn from any mistakes or make

any adjustments before the win-or-go-home bout for the Big Ten. “They’re a really great team,” senior back Alli Helwig said. “We really just need to execute our game plan. Not think of it as Louisville, but think of it as another game preparing us for the Big Ten Tournament.”

After two promising victories over highly ranked Big Ten opponents, adding another against a top-10 Cardinals team would say a lot about how MSU is playing right now.

together,” senior back Michelle Graham said. “I think that’s what we showed last week — that’s happening” “We’re just peaking at the right time,” Helwig said. “We’re connecting with each other and I think our relationships, although they took longer to form with different personnel playing ... they’re forming right now and we finally got it all down.

“It’s coming together now perfectly for the end of the season, so hopefully we just have to make the run like we did last year and take one game at a time, she said.”

Swimming and diving team heads to Buffalo this weekend

On Halloween students may be out roaming the streets in full costumes, but for the swimming and diving athletes, their twoday tri-meet in Buffalo, N.Y. will begin.

After falling to Iowa last weekend, the Spartans plan to put up a fight against Buffalo and Army on Friday and Saturday.

“The biggest thing is to definitely improve,” head coach Matt Gianiodis said. “When you can take into consideration how young we are, I really feel as though we’ve really progressed...to the point where all the coaching staff, myself, is happy where we are.”

So far this season, Buffalo has had a promising season, winning 17 of 30 events at the Western New York Invite and defended their Mid-American Conference title over Akron, 155-145. Buffalo finished third in the MAC conference last year.

“Buffalo beat both of us, men’s and women’s team last year, down in Eastern (Michigan). … The biggest thing is trying to improve on what we did at Iowa,” Gianiodis said. “Same emotional level,

physical level, just to try and keep getting a little bit better as we get through the season.”

Army’s women’s team lost to Massachusetts, 168-132, in their first and only meet.

“They got a good team,” Gianiodis said. “Of course, Army is a service academy so I don’t know how you would ever be able to intimidate kids who are athletes in the army. They have good athletes and Buffalo has good athletes, so this will be a good competition.”

The Spartans will take the long drive to Buffalo on Friday, stopping before they arrive at their destination to make “sure the kids can get out of the bus and stretch out,” Gianiodis said. They will compete immediately after travel.

Gianiodis will be back in his hometown this weekend, and is taking the opportunity to see his family and his niece who attends Buffalo.

“I grew up maybe two to three minutes from the campus, so it will be exciting for me to go back home,” Gianiodis said.

The competition begins Friday at 6 p.m. and continues on Saturday at noon.

Community, police keep kids safe on Halloween “We always plan it so it’s the same day as the East Lansing Pumpkin Walk, so our hopes are that (when) everybody is done going to the businesses ... they make their way to our event,” Barone said. “It’s really to just give kids a fun, safe environment where they can come trick or treat and interact with members of the greek community.”

But on Halloween, East Lansing and MSU have an increased amount of foot traffic, Thomas said.

“We make sure that parents make their children aware that they have to be conscious of the increased traffic,” Thomas said. “There aren’t really many kids that trick-or-treat on campus. In the neighborhoods kids have to watch out for the traffic volumes.”

Bailey Community Association member and parent Konrad Hittner said he’s not concerned about children’s safety this year.

Although East Lansing is home to MSU, East Lansing residents shouldn’t be concerned about their children’s safety, Michigan State Police First Lt. Joseph Thomas said.

“I would not call (MSU) crazy,” Thomas said. “(East Lansing) is a very safe environment to trick or treat in — (parents and kids) just need to prepare.”

To help combat safety concerns near campus, East Lansing hosts their annual “Great Pumpkin Walk” the week before Halloween, said Interfraternity Council’s director of Safe Halloween Alex Barone. To coincide with the city-wide event, MSU greek life hosts their annual “Safe Halloween” event where they have bounce houses, face painting, pumpkin decorating and candy corn relays for passing trick-or-treaters.

“I haven’t worried about Halloween for a long time,” Hittner said. “It’s a holiday for everyone, even for young adults. Is it worse than any other Friday or Saturday night? Maybe a little.”

Also, as a student, Barone doesn’t see much harm in children trick-or-treating near MSU’s campus.

“Honestly there (are) probably dangers anywhere — campus or not campus, suburb or city,” Barone said. “Everyone can relate to when they were little and trick-or-treating. No one wants to ruin or put a damper on a kid’s experience.”

With East Lansing scheduling trick-or-treating from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., there will be less conflict between college students and trick-or-treaters, Hittner said.

“It avoids the primetime college kids’ time,” Hittner said.

“You see some interesting characters come down the streets, but I don’t usually see any conflict between college students and little trick-or-treaters.”

With only a month left in the season, the women’s volleyball team is still searching for a signature win, and a matchup with a Big Ten foe this weekend might provide the perfect opportunity.

“We’ve got to get some of these matches,” head coach Cathy George said.

MSU (12-9 overall, 5-5 Big Ten) welcomes No. 10 Illinois (16-5 overall, 8-2 Big Ten) to Jenison Field House on Friday night and Northwestern (13-8 overall, 3-7 Big Ten) on Saturday night.

“The second half of the Big Ten (season) is about getting down to business,” Kori Moster, senior libero and team co-captain said.

The Spartans are on a two-game losing streak after dropping games to No. 6 Penn State and No. 17 Ohio State last weekend, despite playing competitively in both matches.

“It’s frustrating when you feel like you have improved and don’t have the results for it,” Moster said. “We’re able to compete at a high level.”

Year is at 2,008 career digs, five shy of former Purdue libero Kelli Miller.

Moster was also named a Senior CLASS finalist for her exemplary efforts in the “community, classroom, character and competition.”

An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School, the SENIOR CLASS award recognizes student-athletes who use their platform to make a positive impact on and off the court.

New records for Moster Moster is a player to watch, not only because she is the team’s defensive specialist but because she is closing in on sixth all-time in the Big Ten in digs.

Cutting down mistakes Cleaning up the unforced errors and finishing out sets were things George and her players stressed during practice this week.

“You never want to give up points,” George said. “If you can eliminate some of the points you’re giving to another team they actually have to earn them.”

MSU is in for a stiff challenge against Illinois, who is on a five-game win streak and has won 11 of its last 13 games.

Redshirt junior outside hitter Jocelynn Birks has been a key player for the Fighting Illini during the win streak, totaling 75 kills and 51 digs in the last five games.

“I think we’re really fired up,” senior middle blocker and team co-captain Jazmine White said she wants to see her team bring the same intensity this weekend.

First serve is set for 7 p.m. on Friday night and 6:30 p.m. Saturday night.
